I can answer that being a shitlord from back then. It was because the TF2 mercs were a unique cast of characters that didn't have any built out story. So everyone was basically creating lore for the characters. Touhou was also ridiculously popular around the same time period for very similar reasons- a cast of characters that had these stories in game, but were much more interesting out of game. So two groups of people had the same idea- make their own lore of their favorite bunch of characters. It was perfect because the creativity created community.

What a super shitty business practice.
There's already a fantastic Bad Apple parody on UA-cam that goes by the name of "Bad Sandvich!!", from epsxe160! Definitely worth watching. Although I do have plans to do more touhou remixes using tf2 sources, probably far in the future.

There actually used to be a TF2 server called Touhou Hale, which was the Saxton Hale gamemode but every boss and characters were from Touhou. Sadly this server shut down but you can find videos of it on youtube

The font used in the beginning section of the video is the same font used in the smash bros newcomer trailers, which is DF Gothic W12. I typed the words into a preview font generator and edited a screen shot of it lol
Man. This made me emotional. I'm over 30, and this brought back a lot of good memories of being a late teen getting into tf2 and touhou back in the golden era of the internet. I dont play them anymore, but the memes still living on is a testament to how impactful they were to internet gaming culture back then. For a moment I felt like it was 2009 and it felt good.

I've wanted to make this video a reality for so long but I didn't know about how to do much of anything when I was a kid bingewatching Touhou and TF2 YTPMVs lmao. At first I thought the vocals for the main bit were made using that new neural net voice generator that was released recently that included the TF2 cast, but looking at the date, I guess it wasn't out yet at the time this was made, meaning he had to actually do all that splicing manually. Hot damn.
