Beowulf is probably the most interesting lost literature in the history of lost media! Think about it, Beowulf wasn’t the tales original name because it’s been lost to time, and thanks to that unfortunate fire we now have missing segments of the dragon fight!
I'm fascinated by the fact it was probably a more pagan tale originally, and the christian elements were added later, perhaps by the monk who wrote it. What was the original, pre christian story? who knows
In drama it has a bit of a rival in the Norse fragment "Story of Corpse-Lodin the Greenlander" (Líka-Lothin) that manage to pack a rain of blood, a pillar of sea-fire and the twist that Lodin routinely collects the "last will" runestaffs of dead men into the narrative.
Mhmm. Apparently, one known example of redacted classified information from the initial, unadulterated version of the book had detailed the NSA surveillance state which wasn't public knowledge until 2013 courtesy of Edward Snowden.
@@lointmoint6703 That “classified information” is how America’s terrorized the Middle East for over 35 years and gotten away with it including intentional targeting of innocent civillians, bombing of hospitals and more
I love how in the Thomas one they wouldn’t allow the book to be published because it introduced a new character although now all they do is introduce new characters LMAO
to be fair though, the show was on a pretty tight budget around season 3 and they couldn’t introduce many new characters, hence flying scotsman’s role being reduced drastically.
The worst thing with the Beowulf literature is not just the fact that we dont even know its actual name or even that we dont know the ending. The worst is probably that we may never know either and beyond. The ending could be something grand and beyond our imagination just as easily as it could be mundane and expected. Personally, I dont know which is worse: potentially losing a glorious fight of the ages or the ending be just kinda meh after all this time
I personally want to believe that the ending will be found but it turns out not to be an ending, it's just a cliffhanger of a 2nd literary piece that the author never wrote
Speaking of lost literature, I recently learned that the 1969 Disney Film, The Love Bug was inspired by a 1961 novel called, "Car, Boy, Girl" written by Gordon Buford. However, the book was never released to the public, almost as if Gordon used it specifically to be submitted to Disney. It's highly unlikely that the book will ever surface.
Fun fact the first pilot for Thomas the tank engine is lost and it was recorded live and it had a part where henry the green train was derailed from the track and was picked up by a worker and it's never seen seen and only recreation remain
It wasn't a pilot for the 1984 series, it either was a one-off thing or a pilot for an earlier series (would have been 1953). There's probably a zero chance that we'll see it due to the fact that the BBC is absolute shit at preservation and it is likely that the broadcast itself was never taped.
Another example of found/lost media is "The Rum Diary" and "Prince Jellyfish" by Hunter S. Thompson, both novels were Thompson's first works when he got into writing in the 1960s, and the only reason The Rum Diary was released was because Johnny Depp went through Thompson's Papers for scrapped novels and concepts he wrote over the years, finally seeing the light of day in 1998.

That's basically ancient Greek writing as a whole. High illiteracy rates combined with a cultural emphasis on oral storytelling and the fact that paper doesn't last very long even under the best circumstances means that few writings not mythology-based have survived.

Sadly, there’s sooooooo much lost literature. Most of it will still exist as physical books lost on shelves or in libraries but will never be found or discovered since no one knows what they are, or that they’re even important.
I doubt that he would release it though, since the Railway Series ended in 2011 and the fact that Christopher is barely involved with Thomas at all right now
@Something Studios The final Railway Series Book named “Thomas and his Friends” was released in 2011 and has been confirmed by Christopher Awdry (Son of the Rev. W Awdry) that that will be the final book of the Railway Series ever.
It’s unlikely they’ll introduce him now. The television show has gone through a crappy reboot that makes it unlikely that he’ll be introduced. Luckily, the Thomas community keeps the classic series and books alive through fan content

There’s this one historians work that only survives in fragments. He apparently wrote in the same style as Thucydides. I forgot the name but it’s in the comments section of toldinstone’s video on the library of Alexandria
For those interested that contract for Thomas only ran until the end of the second season in 1989. By the 3rd season Britt Allcrofts company did whatever stories they wanted
Lost music is an incredibly interesting topic that I'd like to see you do a video on; the thought of music being lost is really weird to think about opposed to something physically viewable like literature or a movie.
"With Thomas and Friends still running as of 2020, there's still a chance Barry could be introduced to the series." Sorry man, Season 25 hasn't been greenlit, the show's over. I blame the BWBA reboot. Hopefully, however, Mattel can use this time to reflect. I loved this video though, It's great to hear literature getting some love!

Lost Spin-Offs? I remember reading about a lost Daffy Duck spin-off in the late 90s, I think the studio staff eventually burnt the script for the first episode though...
Nikolai Gogol always breaks my heart. He wrote a novel named Dead Souls and planned it to be a trilogy. He had the second novel completely written and the third manuscript mostly completed but a religious friend of his convinced him that his creative work was basically against god and would cast him to damnation so Gogol threw his manuscripts into a fire, which he immediately regretted. He died of grief about a week later. What's crazy is that Dead Souls ends mid sentence!! Well never know what he had planned for the next two books and it's so sad
In fact, after Gogol's death, his close friend found drafts and restored some chapters of the second novel. I don't know if these chapters are available in English, but I have Russian version of it in paper. Gogol was inspired by Dante and planned to create a trilogy similar to the Divine Comedy: the heroes had to walk a metaphorical path from hell through purgatory straight to heaven.
no one: some random french guy: lemme just steal this super important book written by one of the most controversial authors ever real quick. dont worry no one will read it tho he is crazy.
GET THIS MAN TO 10K SUBS! I wonder if Shakespere was too mainstream to have any lost works, but i need to go check for myself. That would be really interesting
As soon as I saw The Wizard of Oz played at the beginning, I was expecting you to mention The Garden of Meats from The Patchwork Girl of Oz. It was a deleted chapter that all known copies were burned after L. Frank Baum was told that vegetables that grow children to eat was too scary for a children's book.
holy shit did not expect Evelyn Waugh to show up here lmao. he's one of my favorite writers. One of my favorite works of lost media is the Truman Capote novel he was working on after In Cold Blood but before Answered Prayers. He spent a good five years working on it and telling everyone he was working on it and describing the story in great detail, and then he died and no one found anything. Some people think he was lying to get the publishers off his back, some people think he burned it, but no one's been able to find it. There's also The Master and Margarita, one of the greatest Russian novels ever written, which was almost lost due to the fact that it pretty openly shit on Stalinist Russia and it also had heavy religious themes. It wasn't discovered in the 60s, despite the fact that Mikhail Bulgakov was one of the most popular writers of the Stalinist era.
Can you do a video on Thomas and friends lost media, and can you talk about thomas and the magic railroad workprint and the missing coach even though they are partially to fully found and can you talk about the Thomas and the magic railroad director's cut and credit me for the idea?
I would kill to see the director’s cut of Magic Railroad! When the original chase ending was leaked online it was fantastic! Then I was disappointed when the director’s cut wasn’t available on DVD or leaked online
He can also cover the found media of Thomas like the “Jack Jumps In” US AB dub, and some other lost Thomas pieces like most episodes of Season 7 in the US with the original music.
I'm so glad I found your channel. As someone obsessed with lost media, It's so nice to finally have a channel that not only makes high quality videos, but only focuses on discussing media! Looking forward to seeing your future content.
There are tons of Victorian era penny dreadful stories that have been lost. The original Sweeney Todd serial was lost for a time. They were printed on cheap paper and no one really thought to preserve them back then, much like early silent films.
This is so cool, I never even thought about lost literature!!! As always you deserve way more subscribers, your videos keep getting better and better!!!
Have you heard about the two lost Shakespeare plays? The first lost play, "Love's Labour's Won" is the lost sequeal to the romanitc comedy "Love's Labour's Lost". The second play is "Cardenio", which is based on a sub-plot in the Sapnish novel "Don Quixote". There also alot of books mentioned in the Bible that have been lost to time such as "The Book of Jasher", "The Book of Nathan", "The Book of Gad", "The Annals of the Kings of Israel", and "The Annals of the KIngs of Judah". These are not the apocrhayal texts like "First Maccabees" or "Second Maccabees" but books mentioned by biblical chacaters and even quoted as source materals for canonical scripture such as "The Book of Kings" and "The Book of Samuel".
So glad you made this i was recommended your video that had the comment sbout lost books and was happy cause i read alot about lost literature. So glad your doing this!
There was a series of Godzilla novels written in the 90s, and the last one, “Godzilla and the Lost Continent,” was finished but never published so it wouldn’t get in the way of advertising for TriStar's GODZILLA movie
Does anyone know anything about "Anime Tenchou x Touhou Project"? Apparently it's a lost anime short and I've never seen it talked about. Was shown a few times, but there were always strict filming policies and the original creator doesn't want it to be sold.
Hey I’m loving your channel so far, for future topics you could do something like lost internet content that weren’t archived or Lost film cuts (The R-Rated version of Indiana Jones and the Practical cut of the Thing prequel are good examples)
This was fantastic! So glad I found your channel, I might be biased because I'm an author myself, but I would love a second video on Lost Literature, there's a lot out there
2:19 Tell that to All Engines Go. In all seriousness, the Thomas community hasn’t forgotten Barry. The fandom will make stories as if we was in the books.
Thought I'd bring up LarryBoy and the Snowball of Doom. It was a Veggietales chapter book based on the LarryBoy Cartoon Adventures that was scheduled for release and even listed online. It never saw the light of day, likely due to the financial shitstorm that Big Idea was going through at the time.
I nominate The Titanomachy, the "sister" book of the Theogony, which details the creation and ascend of the Olympians in Greek mythology All that is known of it are references in other books that mention it and seem to imply that it was either an alternate version or an extended version of the Theogony In both cases it depicts parts of the story differently
1) N.V. Gogol's Dead Souls Part 2 since the author burned sequel (Gogol wanted to "fix" his characters in sequel. In the first book, there was no protagonist, everyone was "a bad guy" in some terms, but in the Part 2 Gogol intended to show their development. However, he understood how impossible it looks in "our" reality, so he burned it. Fortunately, there are some parts of the sequel that introduced a new character and such development, which were restored through various drafts) 2) A.S. Pushkin Eugene Onegin chapters where author blames Russian Empire's disharmony between landlords and peasants (which was caused by the Empire), Pushkin destroyed them too because he was afraid of his life. I didn't see it in Lost Media Wiki, which is good, i guess?
this was such an interesting video to watch! I loved it! I have a lost media book i want to find again someday. I read it at my grandma’s house all the time but it was lost sometime after her death.
As a fan of Thomas the tank engine, it was great to see t be mentioned here. It surprisingly has its own little rabbit hole of lost media, that I only see community members talk about.
Prometheus Tragedy was a trilogy. First Prometheus story was found, but the rest are lost. One had Prometheus getting freed and the other was called like "Prometheus the Fire Bringer".
I'm personally crushed by all the lost stories of JD Salinger. Most of the short stories he had published have never been collected (though photocopy bootlegs from the original magazines aren't hard to find). Then there's all the stories he submitted that were either rejected or he just changed his mind and pulled publication. And of course, after he retired from publishing all together in the early 60s, he spent the rest of his life writing "only for himself." According to his family, he left strict instructions on how to publish these works after his death, but he died over a decade ago and so far nothing has happened.
The "Q" source is always fascinating. It is a source that St. Matthew and St. Luke both reference when writing their Gospels. Some of the lost Christian scriptures might not be "lost" but more "unknown" outside of Ethiopia and Egypt Christian Coptic Churches (their heritage is just as long as the Roman Catholics). Problem is that they are not in a position to spread the Gospel, so there are not many good English translations. I know of one major Christian organization that is considering adding those to their scriptures. Of course, over 90% of Judeo-Christian sacred scriptures and history is missing.
@Phineas Facing Forward We went from simple wholesome stories about bickering steam locomotives in an idyllic vaguely mid-20th century rural Britain too... Bouncing CGI trains, retarded "dream sequences" and shameless toy shilling
This is all so fascinating & some of it is crazy. I have heard of that film '120 of Sodom' or whatever, but never knew it was an adaptation. To hear that it was written by someone & to see his face (in a sense) is surreal to me.
For lost/unreleased TV/Movie scenes, one that's always intrested me is The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly's 3 Deleted Scenes with an animal skeleton in the Desert, Angel Eyes explaining his motives to Blondie, and the Socorro sequence involving Tuco, Blondie and a prositute.
The war epic/memoir "Seven Pillars of Wisdom" by T E Lawrence ("Lawrence of Arabia") was both a lost book and a title taken from a lost book. The title was first used for a book he'd written before he went off to serve in WW1 which he burned in the fireplace. It was about seven cities in the Middle East he'd recently visited and he felt it was not good enough. After the war he left the first manuscript copy of Seven Pillars in London's Reading railroad station as he was changing trains. As he'd already burned his notes, he had to re-write it from memory. It has been speculated that he deliberately lost his own manuscript, but he had bad PTSD so simply forgetting it or that it may have been stolen, all possibilities. Despite its great value even at the time, it never turned up.
Don't forget Terry Pratchett arranged for the hard drive which contained all his incomplete works to be destroyed in his will. His assistant Rob Wilkins appeared in the news in 2017 and showed the drive being steamrollered, leaving no hope that they could be recovered. It is expected that several of his announced works were stored there such as Raising Taxes and Scouting for Trolls.
I own the 120 Days of Sodom book and I saw the movie adaptation with my late boyfriend when I was just 17 years old... I don't know what that says about me, exactly? But you can guess.
I would love to see something on lost plays. Like how there are rumoured lost Shakespeare plays, and apparently there are 20 of them. But not all of these are confirmed to have ever been real.
I'm a Thomas fan, when i heard about Barry the Rescue engine being so obscure, i became very sure that the lost episode "The Missing Coach" will never reach that level of obscurity. I'm saying that because we have some screenshots that were used for other stuff and footage of the lost episode that were re-cycled for other episodes, plus a voice clip of the narrator ( I forgot if it was Ringo Starr or George Carlin) but i wish to see the full episode and hopefully Harry the rescue engine. Also maybe Barry became Bell.

Lost Spin-Offs?
I remember reading about a lost Daffy Duck spin-off in the late 90s, I think the studio staff eventually burnt the script for the first episode though...
Interesting video but I’d love to see Lost Advertising Pieces or Lost Recordings of Events
Gogol was inspired by Dante and planned to create a trilogy similar to the Divine Comedy: the heroes had to walk a metaphorical path from hell through purgatory straight to heaven.
no one:
some random french guy: lemme just steal this super important book written by one of the most controversial authors ever real quick. dont worry no one will read it tho he is crazy.
Oh boy you weren’t playing about Sade... I went into an hour long binge read on him and his other work
Can you do a video on Thomas and friends lost media, and can you talk about thomas and the magic railroad workprint and the missing coach even though they are partially to fully found and can you talk about the Thomas and the magic railroad director's cut and credit me for the idea?
I would kill to see the director’s cut of Magic Railroad! When the original chase ending was leaked online it was fantastic! Then I was disappointed when the director’s cut wasn’t available on DVD or leaked online
@@TheDigitalApple the workprint is there, it us very much unfinished and only 93 minutes long but it is there on the internet
There's also a lost black and white pilot episode from 1953.
ttte.fandom.com/wiki/The_Sad_Story_of_Henry_(1953)
He can also cover the found media of Thomas like the “Jack Jumps In” US AB dub, and some other lost Thomas pieces like most episodes of Season 7 in the US with the original music.
Lysander .O.C. Scenes of the dc are going to be released in the blue-ray tatmr movie
I'm so glad I found your channel. As someone obsessed with lost media, It's so nice to finally have a channel that not only makes high quality videos, but only focuses on discussing media! Looking forward to seeing your future content.
Another amazing video. Thank you for covering lost literature -- this is truly a fascinating and interesting topic to explore in the LM community.
This is so fascinating! You’re one of my favorite lost media channels
There was a series of Godzilla novels written in the 90s, and the last one, “Godzilla and the Lost Continent,” was finished but never published so it wouldn’t get in the way of advertising for TriStar's GODZILLA movie
Glad I found this channel! Looking forward to more great content!
Does anyone know anything about "Anime Tenchou x Touhou Project"? Apparently it's a lost anime short and I've never seen it talked about. Was shown a few times, but there were always strict filming policies and the original creator doesn't want it to be sold.
No, Barry will never be added to Thomas. As the current Thomas staff don’t care about the railway series.
Anything with the history as long lived as the original manuscripts of the Bible, it is can be considered to be fully lost.
Hey I’m loving your channel so far, for future topics you could do something like lost internet content that weren’t archived or Lost film cuts (The R-Rated version of Indiana Jones and the Practical cut of the Thing prequel are good examples)
glad i discovered your channel! always a fan of learning about lost media and i look forward to future videos :)
You should do some Lost Media about Thomas! Most of it’s lost media is pretty coveted and would be interesting to cover over.
This was fantastic! So glad I found your channel, I might be biased because I'm an author myself, but I would love a second video on Lost Literature, there's a lot out there
I'm just Binging your videos. They're soooo good bruh i love lost media UA-camrs
2:19
Tell that to All Engines Go.
I nominate The Titanomachy, the "sister" book of the Theogony, which details the creation and ascend of the Olympians in Greek mythology
All that is known of it are references in other books that mention it and seem to imply that it was either an alternate version or an extended version of the Theogony
In both cases it depicts parts of the story differently
Lord Byron made an appearance in The Grim Adventures Of Billy And Mandy.
I love how we go from “the collapse of the free world” to “Barry the Rescue Engine”
Fortunately, there are some parts of the sequel that introduced a new character and such development, which were restored through various drafts)
2) A.S. Pushkin Eugene Onegin chapters where author blames Russian Empire's disharmony between landlords and peasants (which was caused by the Empire), Pushkin destroyed them too because he was afraid of his life.
I didn't see it in Lost Media Wiki, which is good, i guess?
Awesome video, all things lost media are always so fascinating and intriguing to me.
How about you cover lost music, songs and/or albums?
this was such an interesting video to watch!
How am I just now finding your channel? Instant Sub!
The mysterious man that got the copy of 120 Days of Sodom, must be the original "sauce?" request.
Love all your videos!
11:12 they dead ass put this mans smut on display
Thank you for covering Barry the Rescue Engine, I was waiting for someone to.
This is a really interesting video, I've dabbled in cancelled novels before but never lost books
Please keep making videos. These are awesome
Still a chance for Barry? Oh how the normies don't know about the shows fall from grace.
@Phineas Facing Forward We went from simple wholesome stories about bickering steam locomotives in an idyllic vaguely mid-20th century rural Britain too... Bouncing CGI trains, retarded "dream sequences" and shameless toy shilling
hey these videos are great...keep the videos coming! i ENJOY lost media
This is all so fascinating & some of it is crazy.
I have heard of that film '120 of Sodom' or whatever, but never knew it was an adaptation. To hear that it was written by someone & to see his face (in a sense) is surreal to me.
Love these videos they make my day 🙂
For people watching this now, Trey the Explainer just did a great video on the historic phenomenon of lost books and famous examples.
Hey ATL, I enjoyed watching your videos about lost media and I wonder about the lost scenes of movies but anyway, I hope you have a lovely day. 🙂
This is so fascinating! I had no clue part of Beowulf was missing. I read it in high school and there was no mention of it
Okay, this would be a really cursed topic, but maybe lost fanfiction? Really dumb, but could lead to come interesting and possibly disturbing results
"The contents of [Marquis de Sade's lost books] are not known."
Tbh we probably DON'T wanna know.
I do.
I really fucking do.
Oh, we do. WE DO.
Maybe you could cover lost characters? (Cartoons, movies, etc.) love your videos!
This is indeed a creative video idea! Maybe for a future video it can be on lost video games or lost media relating to Nickelodeon or cartoon network
Despite its great value even at the time, it never turned up.
nice! something i don’t see a lot either is lost merchandise for disney video games ect
OMG I would love to read Byron's memoirs.
Parcast has an AMAZING episode of their epic podcast about the missing luggage with hemmingways works
I love this channel
Don't forget Terry Pratchett arranged for the hard drive which contained all his incomplete works to be destroyed in his will. His assistant Rob Wilkins appeared in the news in 2017 and showed the drive being steamrollered, leaving no hope that they could be recovered. It is expected that several of his announced works were stored there such as Raising Taxes and Scouting for Trolls.
I own the 120 Days of Sodom book and I saw the movie adaptation with my late boyfriend when I was just 17 years old...
I don't know what that says about me, exactly? But you can guess.
2:19 - With the direction a certain toy company is going in nowadays, I highly doubt that.
But Belle's female.
@@ayeshafenner7180 I'm not saying that Barry actually became Belle, i was just speculating.
Wait a second, a frenchman named "Arno" was the one who recovered de Sade's book from the Bastille? Why wasn't THAT mission in Assassin's Creed Unity?!
Wow, you deserve a lot more subscribers.
