    I do agree, the integration with Cubase on top of the quality f this interface is what made me go that route too. Especially if you re working with Cubase for years, it makes a great difference!

      Have you figured out how to get regular PC audio to record back into the DAW without actually running a cable from out to in, Loopback on instruments coming in is fine, but say you want to record something from the internet into cubase, the matrix does not show how to connect it.
      Also are you daisy chaining with the AES or ADAT ? Thank You.

    great stuff Chris - I have been waiting for this one. love the new eq 3 & 76 compressor. much easier ergonomically than the classic interface imo. dspmixer looks a lot better. as regards cubase mixer integration i dislike the design of the pre / post switch which is hidden when we used narrow channel views - something Steinberg should definitely address. do you find the on board display useful or do you ignore it and use the cubase meters fpr gain staging?

    Great video. I was excited to see the interface when it debuted at NAMM two years ago. I use a pair of Steinber MR816x interfaces as well as a Yamaha N12, which all work together to provide me with 28 analog inputs and 20 analog outputs as well as latency free monitoring for headphone mixes. Steinberg / Yamaha makes nice stuff. The only thing that kind of irks me about the AXR4 is the 32bit native recording mode, which seems completely pointless. I don't understand why one would ever use or need that, especially considering that no 24bit interface on the market is even using the full 24bit dynamic range. Indeed, the s/n spec on the AXR4 analog inputs is impressive; 119db. But that's not 24bit (which has a theoretical dynamic range of 144db). No interface can operate at a true 24bit dynamic range due to the limitations of the analog components themselves. So why bother with 32bits? Seems like a waste of harddrive space.
    The interface does sound good, though, and the preamps have a really nice character to them.

    • @mixdownonline
      @mixdownonline  4 роки тому

      Nice setup you have there Jim! I totally agree with you on the 32bit, I need to ask a few questions on the "why" 32bit integer with 119db of input dynamic range.

    • @gravesg
      @gravesg 3 роки тому +1

      the 32-bit converters give it about an extra pad of 10db, the sell is you can't clip the converters. While in a studio this would be a rookie mistake, using this thing in the field is a different story. The guys using this thing for live shows love the converters and that extra headroom. Not sure what it would do in a proper studio environment ... loud rapper, loud horns? lol idunno

    • @JimAlfredson
      @JimAlfredson 3 роки тому

      @@gravesg You may not be able to clip the converters but you can certainly clip the analog front end feeding the converters since no analog circuit on earth has enough headroom before clipping to even provide a true, clean, full 24bit signal, much less a 32bit one.

    As always Steinberg is offering some "nice to have" features like the DSP and the Cubase integration but miss some other things which are much more important to me...like physical gain knobs.
    The silk feature sounded "OK" to me but not as good as the "air" feature on my Focusrite Clarett 4Pre USB what leads to my overall impression: Although I don't need that many inputs in my homerecording studio I think I would get a better interface out there, to stay with my choice for example with a Clarett 8Pre and an optional Octopre and all that for a lower price.
    And that's the main point... it might be a good interface but 2500€??? Come on Steinberg, that is just ridiculous!!!
    But as always, a very nice and informative video you're still my main source regarding Cubase!

      Sounds great! I got a AXR some months ago for testing, was an amazing experience. The converters/signal path of this unit is stunning, such a pristine, crisp sound, also the bottom end has a nice, warm punch...
      It’s a high end interface for sure and in the same ballpark as Apogee, Lynx etc.. People tend to say there is not much difference in converters, interfaces these days. But I have to say, I have never heard my monitors sound better than with the AXR. I had an Symphony Mk I, Aurora (old one) and the Big Six over the last years. Also a ID44 which on paper has “better” conversion, but only on paper. The AXR is the best of all of those mentioned, though some have higher AD/DA conversion on paper…just my personal impression, highly subjective. I don’t want to say that the others a bad, they are fantastic, but if you want just a few percentage of better resolution and detail, well don’t look further than the AXR. It might not have the best reputation and Steinberg is a bit slow on updates, but it’s a reliable, stable interface.
      I will get one soon, especially after the update. Thanks!😊

    What are your thoughts in terms of AXR4 drivers (holding a bunch of VSTs/Plugins) x Asio Guard. I mean, Cubase in order to prevent spikes and glitches increases the latency when things get crowd, some times it happens even with just a few Plugins opened. This can be seen when you turn "on" the main Asio Latency Compensation button, it turns off a lot of Plugins in order to preserve low latency.
    I'm a producer that uses VSTs as 95% of everybody does.
    How to better handle those situations in Cubase.

    I'm using Windows 10 i7 6800k.
    My PC has thunderbolt ready but I haven't tried. Do you think I'll be able to use the TB version?

      You will have to check the specs of your motherboard but chances are that you will be able. If your thuderbolt connectors are Type-C, you will need a StarTech.com Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter

    I understand that silk is just for the 4 inputs while recording...but does silk show up on every track in cubase while mixing

      No it doesn't, it's when recording only.

      Thank you for the quick reply. I am considering getting this unit but I have so much invested in uad plugs ..hardware and add on cards plus the Townsend mic...I was worried about loosing my guitar and bass amps on the uad input mixer....how does the Steinberg handle the vst amps when plugged directly into the unit?...also anything else you can think of for someone like me wanting to change over...thanks for all you do.

    Is it possible that i can hookup the line output of my 8 channel pre amp (it has 8x 6.3mm TRS line output)
    into the line input of the AXR4? This way i can record 8 channels simultaneously 32/384

      Which RME product supports 32 bits float recording @ 384Khz ?

    Can´t make it record internally - but have to go out to a patchbay and back. WHY ? RME from 2005 can do it internally... Loopback ? HA - does not work proberly. Tired of Pretend SILK and not the real deal. Evry body talks about "Red and blue" - but COME ON - if it can do the basics on a PC DAW the...... sigh ..... - BUT as always Chris - a great video - Thanks !

    UA-cams compression is killing the sound we really can't hear the difference.

    For £2000, and steinberg awful customer service, even if I had that to spend, I'd rather spend it on something that isn't steinberg. Love cubase, but I would definitely not be giving them any more of my money, regardless of how good their product is.

      I never had a problem with Steinberg's customer service but I understand that a bad customer service can be a deal breaker.

      Avli Avliav really? With my cases for cubase it always took several weeks for them to respond to the initial request. And more weeks for updates. Useless...
      Edit: well, always = twice. I didn’t bother to open any case anymore after that.
