How many hours did that take? From analysis, drawing board, design, engineering, sourcing materials, transportation, construction, installation, and final inspection? How much is your TIME worth?
What else could you have done with that time? From start to finish I’d say that’s a two to three day job, including the custom framing all around that. People don’t think about those “little things” that slow you down, like the return trips to the store, or the proper permit & plan check for the new framing around that little thing.
Is that some out-of-the-box unit OR did he have to design, source, weld it, paint it, or powder coat it? I hope he used aluminum.

I've built many things in my life. I'm always impressed when somebody takes the time to use some ingenuity and do something themselves. This however was not thought through completely. There isn't a toddler in the world that's going to be stopped by this gate and neither will most dogs. He's created a ladder that actually poses a health risk to small children. The first thing they're going to want to do is climb those ladder rungs and they're definitely going to fall off and hurt themselves. I have three kids and none of them would have been kept anywhere by this gate past the age of 1 1/2

My grandmother was born in the 1880s. Much later my grandfather built her a house with pocket windows. She had a well, the wishing well drop bucket kind in the front yard. I only saw it much later when it had been vacant for years. During those years she lived in an old farmhouse next door to me. She made Hardee’s style biscuits every morning. There was always vinegar with pepper and cucumbers in a bowl on the table.

Would have been much cheaper if I didn't spend the extra $$ for fancy hinges/ hardware, magnetic anchor points, and giving the wood a nice stain.
