Hey John. Hello from Canada. Just want to say a huge thank you for all that you do and teach. Can’t tell you how long I’ve struggled with crazy HDMI signals - I bought the Decimator after one of your earlier vids and that’s been my Swiss Army knife to solve cross conversion woes. But HDMI over SDI still keeps me awake at night. But the Dr HDMI is like a little bit of magic - thanks for doing the research, testing and sharing your learning. Keep up the great work.
+Norm Clare hey Norm! Really glad to hear the videos are helping you and hopefully you get some more sleep because of them ;) thanks for the nice comment!
I've been using a couple of those Dr HDMI units for many years now, they do their job well for what they're designed to do. I run the OPPO 103D into one of them before it goes up to my CRT projector so that the OPPO constantly outputs the signal whether the projector is ready to go or still warming up, or if i change sources etc, the OPPO stays outputting the same. One thing of note about those lights, i covered mine with small pieces of electrical tape years ago to stop any light spill onto my screen, and the LEDs on the Dr HDMI have faded the electrical tape. They seem to be quite high on UV.
Don't forget when recording on the GoPro at the same time as going out your microhdmi, the resolution on the micro-hdmi can drop as soon as you hit record, depending on how high res your are recording in.
That's right for GoPro 5... but 3 and 4 model use 1080p60 to the hdmi display. So with Dr HDMI, you will have 1080i60... and ATEM 1 M/E Production switcher work in 1080i50... So it can't be work together... Could you tested it if you have a GoPro 3 black or 4 black edition ? That's my models and I can't use it in live. Thanks
Hey folks, here's an essay, but just a word of warning before you buy the Dr HDMI unit OR consider using GoPro as a streaming cam in a broadcast situation. Working on a client install who was deadset on using GoPro, I thought I was saved after watching this vid. I was running the same problem, with the same set up. GoPros (7), "work" when plugged direct HDMI into switcher, but non functioning when adapted to SDI via a Blackmagic (BM) micro converter, sent to a BM ATEM TV Studio HD. I read about EDID, and thought that must be the issue. I ended up purchasing two Dr HDMI from B&H ($79 USD ea), I'm in Canada, so they were $$ + took forever to get here due to shipping delays. Once they arrived, I installed them in-line and again, nothing. I used my GH5 as a litmus to make sure that all paths of signal were A+, and they were. I DL'ed DR.HDMI utility tool to try to sniff out where in inconsistency was, but using the tool is above my paygrade, and there's really no useful manual PDF for it. The damning factor isn't the Dr HDMI units, as these items work fine (two up for sale btw if anyone's interested lol). GoPro is the problem. As mentioned in the above vid, they're not really for streaming. As soon as the HDMI mon out is plugged in, regardless of what fps + res you have the camera set at, they snap back to some default... or something. In one of the comments below John responds to a question "....I found on some occasions that to get it out output 25p I have to set it to double that for it to work. The GoPro is just weird when it comes to HDMI output", which is absolutely true. In my case, in order to get camera --> switcher output via HDMI only, I have to set my GoPro to 30fps, and the switcher input to 24fps which is absolutely crazy. 60fps out / 30 in doesn't work, 30 fps out / 30 in doesn't work, 24 fps out / 24 in doesn't work, 30fps out / 24pfs in DOES work. I hate it. Anyway, the hell with GoPro, I'm officially salty about it haha! Wonderful learning moment though.
A perfect video! My question is the GOPRO 5 or 6 can output a clear signal (without OSD) or not? Considering to buy some for a band music festival broadcasting. Thank you!
Does the doctor hdmi have a delay built-in to sync multiple cameras from different manufacturers that has hdmi delay. Would it solve live streaming problems thanks.
@@heretorecord ok thanks are there any device that can do that and is video or link that convert USB Web cam to hdmi for the Atem or can u just use any regular hdmi to USB cable
Hello John! I have a go pro 6 connecting to my ATEM production studio 4K. I have sony cameras connected to it and they work fine! My atem is set to 1080i59.94, I bought the doctor hdmi set to number 3, but it doesn’t work…. I don’t know what to do, can you give me some ideas please? Thank you!
I'm a bit at a lose since it's been a while since I posted this video. Best things to do is to connect the GoPro (or DR HDMI) to a TV which tells you what signal you are outputting.
+totomxlv yes most definitely. In fact that is a better and more typical method of making the GoPro (or any device for that matter) work with the ATEM.
I believe it was set at 1080p50. I found on some occasions that to get it out output 25p I have to set it to double that for it to work. The GoPro is just weird when it comes to HDMI output
My laptop is PC quad core, 16gb RAM and Nvidia card 3gb ddr5 Windows 10. My ATEM resolution is set up 1080p 59.94 for the webcaster X2 only read 1080p or 720p Thanks for answer quickly.
+totomxlv if you are unable to force the Nvidia card into outputting 1080p59.94 then a Decimator MD-HX is your best option. It will take most any input and output whatever oh want it to. That way it will always work with the ATEM.
Hi ! John, thank you for this excellent video. I have a quick question, can I record and stream at same time from GOpro. In case not do you have any solution to record and stream Gopro at same time. Thank you very much. R
Thanks for the video! This is a great little device and definitely cheaper than a decimator! On a side request (in efforts to support your videos), can you supply affiliated links to Amazon for both the UK and the US? I'm pro'lly going to pick up two of these... thanks again!
Hey John! Thanks for the helpful video. At the moment I am trying to solve the problem of having both gopros and DSLRs plugged into the blackmagic ATEM television studio hd switcher. The issue is that gopros output a live HDMI feed of 1080p 30fps and the DSLRs output 1080p 60fps, and i cant adjust on either camera. I dont mind running either the DSLRs or gopros through these Dr HDMI things but I'm wondering which would be better. Should I use the Dr. HDMI to convert gopro to 60 fps or use it to convert DSLR to 30 fps? and are both options possible/impossible? thanks for the help!
I'm not so sure that this will be possible with either device. You may end up needing to run it all through a scaler (like the Decimator MD-HX) or something similar!
I try with the Hero 7 and the Blackmagic Mini Recorder or with Roloand V-1HD, with 1080p50 or 1080p25 from the Gopro and it does not work with the Doctor HDMI in the 3 button :'( do you have an idea ?
Hi, Is there any other way to know what signal your hdmi device is sending through the cable? You are using the Decimator MD-HX but it is quite expensive. is there a tool or software that can tell me the resolution, frame rate and progressive/interlaced signal?
Sadly it’s a hard thing to figure out. I’ve found that if I’ve tried everything else (different cables, settings etc) and the GoPro still doesn’t work then EDID is likely the issue
I’ve contacted the manufacturer to ask how to update the firmware update and convert 1080p to 1080i, and they said this is not supported by Dr HDMI. I couldn’t find a way to configure the programmable banks so I’ve returned the item.
I'm just wondering if you could help me, I recently bought a 30m hdmi cable for my GoPro (the cable works great concidering the length with no lag or dropout with my TV, but I also bought couplers which work aswell. I plugged my DSLR with a 3m mini HDMI to HDMI into a hdmi coupler and then Into the cable and then TV, works great also. But when I plug my 1m micro HDMI into my GoPro then the coupler then the 30m cable, it doesn't show any picture, the TV knows there is a device though... It seems to be the coupler that the GoPro doesn't like as I tried plugging a 30cm hdmi into the coupler then 1m hdmi to micro and then the GoPro and nothing came out either... Do you think maybe I should try replacing the coupler with a hdmi signal booster or maybe one of those little devices you had to fix your problem? Hope you can help Thanks, D Godfrey
the couplers came in a pack of 3 and i tried every one in the pack and still no video output. do the hdmi video boosters actually do anything and would one of those work or maybe try a different brand of coupler?
That’s a great question and I’m not sure. It’s my belief though that the Apple TV is set up for only outputting on signal type so telling it to send a different signal (which is what the DrHDMI does) would not help. Whereas a GoPro is able to send multiple resolutions etc and the DrHDMI can tell it which one to send. I don’t have a 4th gen Apple TV to test either so this is my best guess!
ok I do not speak English well but from what I understand I can buy this to correct the problem of not recognizing 1080p and using it with my capture device any equipment that is a video transmitter
+Captura HD good question. I couldn’t say for sure that it will work with your particular setup but it will fix common EDID issues when connecting this kind of gear.
+theracinglinetv I think that if you are using your own gear and you test things then it would be a replacement. However if you start connecting other peoples gear at a venue then the MDHX is much more trustworthy in my opinion.

No delay built in. It simply tries to request an HDMI output from the source device.

Certainly. Just use a USB adapter like the one that comes with a phone. Works great’
