  • A quick look a some steep mowing of Spring grass. This section had been too wet to mow all winter, so now the grass is pretty heavy going, and the ground still a bit soft. Just another day at the office!

    That is great use of 4 wheels to adapt the mower. My property is mostly that steep, about 2 acres and all I did was change my mowers rear tires to atv tires, not tractor style, just gripper style. I have three mowers that way, for at least 10 years. I support anyone to try more better!

      We have to do a lot of transverse mowing on some clients' properties, so the duals add a lot of side ways stability.

    • @BlockBustersCoNZ
      @BlockBustersCoNZ  3 роки тому +5

      yup - but smaller deck doesn't help when doing lots of large areas - so everything is a trade-off really. When this video was taken, these 2 units mowed 25-30 acres a week between them. The decks in this video are 60" (3 spindles).

      x758 is the one you are watching mow, and video is shot from an x748. Arguably the x758 is slightly more powerful, but is a lot more thirsty - 20% higher fuel consumption - weirdly as it has the same engine, but JD claims an extra 1 hp. Unfortunately x758 has lots more plastic in the headstock - which breaks after about 900 hours. Both these machines had done more than 1800 hrs at time of video. The yellow 60" deck is way less hardy than the older green 60" decks - the mounting system wears away and needs rebuilding with welding about every 600 hours.

    Huh, I didn't know it was possible to put dual rear wheels on mowers. I might do that. I wonder if you can put dual wheels in the front as well.🤔

    • @BlockBustersCoNZ
      @BlockBustersCoNZ  Рік тому

      In my experience there's no real benefit for the extra cost - and you scuff way more in tight turns. These duals allow this mower to traverse 35deg sideways without drama. Have a look at ua-cam.com/video/nykxDFnqtFE/v-deo.html Same mower on side slopes from operator's POV.
      You have to remove the rear anti-scalp wheels from the deck for this model (grind them off) - but the duals compensate fine.

      Absolutely! The 748 is a great mower. We have the duals fitted as we have several clients whose lawn dictates lateral mowing at 20 - to 35 degrees - so they just stay on to minimise side scalping, (rear anti-scalp deck wheels have to be removed to fit the duals). Great video guys. Knowing how much video flattens out a slope that 's got to be an interesting hill to mow!
    Given your experience with duals I was wondering if I could ask a quick question.
    I've got an X748 and am considering purchasing a clic dual wheel kit. At the moment I've got wheel weights on the rear wheels.
    Are there any instances where the performance of the duals isn't as good as weighted single rears? Also what tyres are you running on the duals?

    • @BlockBustersCoNZ
      @BlockBustersCoNZ  5 років тому +4

      Hi Olivier - apologies to be so slow responding. Duals outperform weights with lawn work as you don't want to dig down for traction on your client's lawn, of course. we use an agricultural type cleat tread tyre on the dual which is a great compromise. It runs at half the inflation of the inner tyre helping to minimise scuff on tight turns. We have used this setup for 14 years plus, and I learned it from other operators who had been going for several years before that - its still our "go to" for the smaller lawn tractors that work serious slopes. And yes, those are "Clic" duals. But ensure you regularly remove them, (about 2 weekly of using daily), to lubricate the locking mechanism - a 5 minute job that saves hours of work later. Run the inner tyres at 16psi, and the outers at 8psi. We work slopes up to 40 degrees, (transverse), with this setup - in the right traction conditions - but I am not recommending you do that. Have a look at my video at (ua-cam.com/video/nykxDFnqtFE/v-deo.html) This shows the same tractor working 25 - 40 degrees sideways - and you can see how much it "crabs" especially after 3:45. You are welcome to email for more info if you wish - see our contact page at www.blockbusters.co.nz. Safe mowing!

    • @BlockBustersCoNZ
      @BlockBustersCoNZ  6 років тому

      The dual wheels are "Clic" brand purchased here in New Zealand, and they are supplied with custom mounting plate and bolts. The wheels have extended inner hubs. The initial fit up takes about 30 minutes as the inner wheel is removed and reinstalled with the mounting plate. After that, it is simple to remove/install the wheels - simply drive onto a 2" board, unlock and rotate 1/8 turn to remove the wheels (in about 20 seconds). BTW, I don't work for, nor am rewarded in any way by "Clic" - we just use their duals. I guess you are in UK? I've found these guys atvcity.co.uk with a search on "clic wheels uk". Be aware - they are expensive - we pay more than $2000 NZD per set.
      Have a look at my video ua-cam.com/video/nykxDFnqtFE/v-deo.html for how these duals allow us to mow up to 45deg on the side. The camera is mounted on the same machine as is in this video.
      No other mods that enhance the machines. They will climb this well with good footing even without the duals. Tyre pressure is important - run the front wheels at 15psi and all 4 rear wheels at 8psi. If very soft ground conditions, increase inner rear wheel to 16psi and maintain 8psi in outer dual - better traction - I'll give you that for free - go safe!

      Sure made it grunt! It's the start of the incline, and a heavier patch of growth.

      “Clic” is the brand. Best small duals I’ve ever encountered. Literally less than 60 seconds on or off.

      "Clic" brand - lots of detail in (way) earlier comments if you're interested. Rear anti-scalp wheels have to be removed from the deck for them to fit.
