This song reminds me this awful day when I came back from the funeral of my dear friend... She was only 29, had 2 young kids and died from breast cancer. When I came back home, I listened the Flavors of Entanglement album, and when this song came, I cried sooo much... but I still think it's a wonderful song. I dedicate it to my friend everytime I listen it. :(
I feel that. Over 40 years of pets and I miss every one of them. Every one of them were special and unique. Any time I need to cry, I just think of them. Puff, Lil' Puff, Poof, Maddog, Shamu, Ghordhead, Sir Meows-a-lot, Daisy, Poppy, Casey, Rosey, Rollie, Pollie, Cheddar, Bertha, and Samantha. I have extremely bad memory issues, but something I can never forget is every furry friend I had along the way.
Alanis, you've spoken the state of my heart time and time over the years. I could never thank you enough for helping bring clarity to me through your lyrics. You are a special friend.
i came across your touching comment in the death of love ones post here on you tube. Well am really sorry about that okay 😒☹️and I know how it feels to be lonely without our love ones, we've all lost our love ones in death one way or the other, either a spouse, child, family members, or a true friend that meant the world to us, such is life I understand how you feel but life must move on because death is inevitable no matter how hard we try! And we'll all have to face it someday......

my life is a song... it’s much easier to relate through music... You never have to open your mouth... only your heart... and then suddenly, it just slowly seeps into your soul.. after hours, you’re exhausted from all the love making and deep thoughts and your ears no longer hear the music- only your body... being alone- solitude is my time to do my deepest thinking...
Aaron Di Pietro As a die hard Alanis fan I'm torn about this song. It's a gorgeously written and sung ballad. But Flavors of Entanglement and then Havoc and the Bright Lights are NOT rock albums. What I love about Alanis is that she's not so concerned with trying to mass producing radio hits but rather just sings what comes naturally to her; she puts so much thought and heart into this song that even though it's not her most well-known song, it still ranks as one of her best.

There are those who sing because they can just hit the notes or they have thst commercial look. But then there are the treasured few that sing because they ARE the music. Alanis, you are one of the few.
I have listened to this song probably 50 times the past 2 days, at least. It reminds me of a rough time in my life with my ex 3-5 years ago. There are recovery type terms in it. Step one, and fake it til you make it. Reminds me of the early days of discovering things aren't right with them and then you have to pick yourself up and move on. The "what IF" you build up as a WE, turn into "what IS" as me or I alone. Reality.
I love to listen to Alanis. I came across this song today. Perfect timing in my life right now. I opened my heart up for the first time in 6 years to someone. My heart has been wounded all over again. It feels like a kick to the chest.
The video depicts exactly how I felt when my brother died. I was quiet, and still, and as fragile as a burnt leaf. The raw emotions that are felt in the words of this song are haunting. "Day one, day one, step one, step one...." I fell across this song again today, a day before the 13th anniversary of my brother's suicide. I have lost people in my life but his death really hurt in ways I never could have imagined. I miss you brother and I love you.
This year has seen my life torn completely apart multiple times. This song has finally brought out the tears and pain I’ve been trying to hide or avoid.
This song is great because it's so universal. I'm sure everyone who listens to it has been in the same situation. I was there this year, early in the year. But, if this song teaches us anything it's to soldier on and become a better person than the person we were while with that special person in our past. And if you are lucky enough to have that person still in your life (as a friend) just appreciate them as a friends and not as a couple (Not as we). I love you Alanis.
Alanis is one of those singers that stay with you throughout childhood, and just when you think you don't need to listen to her, she plucks a string at your heart. Basically she's grew up with a lot of us and continues to teach us that we're not alone and to let go of what we cannot control.
This is a powerful song. It means something different to everyone. It makes me think of two different close friends who recently lost their husbands to cancer and have to learn how to start their life over again. So moving... Alanis is a brilliant poet.

Because radio only play what kids want to hear these days. Depthless, superficial, meaningless music like those on Top 40. And mostly because meaningful songs are much less interesting than showing tits, butts and computerized vocal.

I remember the night before my ninth grade graduation, i listend to this song over and over again untill i litterally fell asleep. It just felt so peaceful. This is a very nice and beautiful song. :)
House is surely not comparable to Alanis Morissette, she is historical, and Morissette, you get better in time. No one captures human emotion like you, nor with such wisdom.
Love this one. Very artistic, love the voice patterns. She is like no one truly she is a unique artist that has found her own sound. I could watch this over and over!!!
"If God's taking bets, I pray he wants to lose". She's always had sick lyrics and it doesn't get much sicker than that. My day 1 was the day of my divorce 5 days after my mom had died, coincidentally standing on a beach...it was beautiful, but now alone in the world, so empty and painful. Couldn't stop the tears. But that was years ago and now can't stop listening to Princes Familiar as I have a little girl on the way in January. Point being, to those who are 'here' now, it gets better for sure!
She had me at “reborn and shivering/spat out on new terrain” I loved this song even when I couldn’t relate to it. And now that I can...it’s as devastating as its lyrics. I do prefer the original as a piano ballad though
So well written. This song deserves every bit of the success she experienced early on. Only, this song wasn't written out of angst from a failed relationship -- it was written out of facing the reality, solemnly and maturely. I as I, not as we. Great work.
I don't think you can define all the emotional facets her voice evokes but she is unquestionably a gift to humanity as such.
Dude, you need to get out more. You seem so lonely.
Even more in person..
❤
The song captures the pain of a loss especially when going through a divorce. Thanks Alanis for your voice in the fog.

Lyrics :
Reborn and shivering
Spat out on new terrain
Unsure, unconvincing
This faint and shaky hour
Day one, day one
Start over again
Step one, step one
I'm barely making sense
For now I'm faking it
'Til I'm pseudo making it
From scratch, begin again
But this time I as I and not as we
Gun shy and quivering
Timid without a hand
Feign brave with steel intent
Little and hardly here
Day one, day one
Start over again
Step one, step one
With not much making sense
Just yet I'm faking it
'Til I'm pseudo making it
From scratch, begin again
But this time I as I and not as we
Eyes wet toward
Wide open frayed
If God's taking bets
I pray he wants to lose
Day one, day one
Start over again
Step one, step one
I'm barely making sense
Just yet I'm faking it
'Til I'm pseudo making it
From scratch, begin again
But this time I as I and not as we

Lyrics
Reborn and shivering
Spat out on new terrain
Unsure unconvincing
This faint and shaky hour
Day one, day one
Start over again
Step one, step one
I'm barely making sense
For now I'm faking it
Till I'm pseudo making it
From scratch, begin again
But this time I as I and not as we
Gun shy and quivering
Timid without a hand
Feign brave with steel intent
Little and hardly here
Day one, day one
Start over again
Step one, step one
I'm barely making sense
For now I'm faking it
Till I'm pseudo making it
From scratch, begin again
But this time I as I and not as we
Eyes wet toward
Wide open frayed
If God's taking bets
I pray He wants to lose
Day one, day one
Start over again
Step one, step one
I'm barely making sense
For now I'm faking it
Till I'm pseudo making it
From scratch, begin again
But this time I as I and not as we
Thank you my angel,............ my mother passed in 2012, and your song helps me to cope, God bless you always!!!
This song is so amazing and makes me cry because of the lack of MTV that brought our generation up :(
I totally agree...MTV where did the music go??
i agree 124% she might be one of the most beautiful women in the world. simply breathtaking always has been. she is angelic more now than ever
House M.D. had the best music to captivate the dramatic moments
I love all the songs in that show.
Agree
I remember the night before my ninth grade graduation, i listend to this song over and over again untill i litterally fell asleep. It just felt so peaceful. This is a very nice and beautiful song. :)
Essa voz não sai da minha mente, é muito perfeita
Prima o poi tutto mi diventerà indifferente...ogni cosa, ogni ricordo, ogni canzone...tutto!!!!
Très belle chanson ... belle soirée à vous mes amis(e) ...
Mayela Valerin J'aime beaucoup aussi ...
i don't understand why every time i listen to this song i become so emotional and my eyes start to shed tears
I just watched the House episode '97 seconds' and that's why I'm here. I have to say I love this song a lot!😍💕🎧🎶
Yeah same here but 3 years later!!!
It IS good, I've watched HOUSE way too much lol
House is surely not comparable to Alanis Morissette, she is historical, and Morissette, you get better in time. No one captures human emotion like you, nor with such wisdom.
For anyone who has lost someone close to them. The process of being human. 💚🌏
Love this one. Very artistic, love the voice patterns. She is like no one truly she is a unique artist that has found her own sound. I could watch this over and over!!!
trop magnifique sa donne envie de pleurer 😢
yes it is ok to cry...Alanis is good at bringing out the tears...she does it to me every album so far
Point being, to those who are 'here' now, it gets better for sure!
she has an amazing voice
she seems a very genuine person
the lyrics of this song speak to my heart
just wanted to say it
She had me at “reborn and shivering/spat out on new terrain” I loved this song even when I couldn’t relate to it. And now that I can...it’s as devastating as its lyrics. I do prefer the original as a piano ballad though
her songs bring tears to my eyes. Beautiful. Emotional. Powerful.
Une douce et belle voix ... à écouter ...
Years ago, I used to listen to this song while making myself throw up because of eating disorders. Damn, I've come a long way. Proud of myself !
I heard this on House
She has a magnificent voice
I love this song! It's totally my mantra right now...unfortunately... thank you Alanis for writing such beauty!!
i fell in love with Alanis in 1996,i'm still in love with her.
So well written. This song deserves every bit of the success she experienced early on. Only, this song wasn't written out of angst from a failed relationship -- it was written out of facing the reality, solemnly and maturely. I as I, not as we. Great work.
