Once again Julia Holter proves she's one of the best musical geniuses working today. This album is gorgeous. Each one of her releases last decade were also masterpieces
no but like fr. Julia became my favourite artist when I saw the Aviary album live in concert in early 2019, and somehow she has remained my favourite since, 5 years later. I'm still processing Aviary. I still find myself in an aviary full of shrieking birds
I'm really happy you reviewed this, I enjoy it a lot. I was pretty blown away by the scope of a lot of these songs. The composition is dense, and the fact that it still forms into something cohesive and beautiful is impressive. I especially love the contrast of the ambient textures with the use of brass and woodwinds. Those types of sound are so starkly different, and it's really cool to hear them brought together
Thank you so much for this fantastic review! I'm so grateful of people like you, who can put what they feel about a piece of music / album into words, and it's so intricate and detailed, it's so well expressed and delivered... I can almost hear the album while you're commenting on the songs! Amazing review for a mind blowing album. Thanks!
First time I've ever actually been pissed off at Mr. Melon for giving something a positive review but not a 9 or higher. My current album of the year and I didn't think anything would dethrone MGMT this early on.
The only album I've heard this year,so far, that I've come back to time and time again in such quick succession. It reveals something different on each listen. Complex and other worldly. Amazingly creative and brilliant.
saw her in london last night and her band is INCREDIBLE. mind blowing music. brought 6 people with who didn't know her work and they were all completely in awe.
I had a similar experience with my girl and a bunch of her friends, dragged them along despite the fact they knew nothing about her music and everyone was blown away by the sheer beauty of it all
Aviary cemented Julia Holter for me. Mind-bending album. Have One on Me and Aviary are my two picks for most challenging, otherworldly, and beautiful albums of the 2010's. This new album already sounds better on second listen, and I was enthralled on first listen.
Even if I prefer her older albums, this one is still a pretty beautiful and immersive experience! I really love the ambient textures and ethereal saxophone leads throughout this album.
Still vividly remember reading a feature about her in Mojo when Loud City Song came out, being intrigued, and going to find her music - instantly falling down the wonderful rabbit hole. I love this woman's music!
Anyone know who did the album art? I kinda love it, weird pervert in me aside…. Still need to check this out. Sat out on Aviary mostly, but I mostly loved her work up to that point. I just didn’t have patience for 90 minute records a few years ago, so I’m glad to see this is under an hour..
Me, after listening to the review and hears the strong eight 😳 This review really sounded like a strong 9-10 😘 Looking forward to check out the album 😎👍
I think the review is just fantastic, he praised it a lot, I'm very very happy as a Julia fan. He didn't get a lot from the song "Materia", which I can understand, and while I like it, it does feel a bit slight when compared to the rest of the tracks, especially after such a stellar opening 3 track run of the album.
@@unknown6390 oh thanks!! I Was actually referring to his rating (8) not my rating (10) when asking!! It was rhetorical as a means to express my admiration for this album as he'd already given his explanation for his score in the video.
Have You in My Wilderness clicked but her last 2 including this one, didn't. Maybe it will some day, I'm definitely giving them a spin from time to time
Beautiful record, her best IMO. I feel certain any fans of Holter's would enjoy Annette Peacock's 1972 jazz-rock album "I'm the One". I'd be surprised if it hasn't been an influence.
Jacob Collier’s music is somehow too artsy for mainstream consumption and too mainstream for the artsy crowd. I really don’t know who his audience is supposed to be tbh.
I actually found this album quite patience testing, and that’s coming from someone who loved Aviary. A couple tracks really did it for me, but the mid section of the album kinda just feels aimless to me? Idk maybe it’ll click on a future listen, but I’m not really feeling it right now.
I wouldn’t say Materia is the weakest track here at all. It is the most concise in terms of length, arrangement, etc. but it’s so fucking emotional and hits me so hard compared to Sun Girl or even Ocean, although I still really enjoy those tracks
You never said it would be soon, just do it when you're 85 years old. Unless you are 85 years old right now, in which case you shouldn't do it because you have so much to live for.

100% totally agree with you. Aviary is one of the top records of the 00's

Cal turned up the sarcasm
It has been over 5 years and I’m still processing Aviary
It's a masterpiece.

such a perfect album
That's exactly my experience.
Julia is just one of those artists on another level, I have been a fan for ages and she never lets me down
Talking To The Whisper is one of the most mind-bending songs I’ve ever heard
RIGHT?!!
It’s soooooo good 😩😩😩
ikr? as sound as i heard it i knew it'd be on my head for months.
I think you need to listen to some more music if you think this song is mind bending fr

Have You in My Wilderness is the greatest album of the last decade
You could say that about several of Julia's albums
She one-upped it with Aviary.
You meant to say Aviary.
Sometimes being weirder doesn't make something better. Aviary is bolder but Have You in My Wilderness is a perfect album.
NO
The title track for this one is insane I still can’t get over how beautiful it is
Damn, I was really excited to see how you’d evoke the album art in the thumbnail for this one
Aviary is her masterpiece and one of the best records of the 2010s
I fully agree. It's a mesmerizing work of art.

Silly melon, how dare you criticize Aviary as "unfocused". It's one of the best albums of the century
"Meathony Packtano" is wild asf
Pause 😂😂😂😂
This is near perfect and isn't even in her top 3 albums. Crazy
Her quality control is insane
One of my favs this year. Definitely putting art back into music

a little bit disappointed you didnt mimick the cover this time. 😕
Anthony showed on twitter that he already got it on vinyl-- none of us should be surprised (and it's well-deserved).
Twitter?

I can't help but think that Julia is who Fantano recommends in place of Jacob Collier's Djesse projects. And I'm not gonna argue. Vol 4 is messy.
