    Just watched this video and I've been in the field almost 11 years and I've never replaced one of these. I work on commercial and 90% of what I see has expansion valves. Im having a restriction on a heat pump at the moment and the way you described this and showed it was A+. Helped me grasp it 100%.. this is 7yr old so u might not see this but just wanted to say thanks!

    throwing a 2.5 ton 410a outside condenser unit in-line with an old r22 evaporator attic unit 2.5 ton. went to update the orfice(piston) and the new one that came with the new 410a unit is too big. old one on the r22 unit is 078 and the new one is 063. any ideas on how to make it work? cant get the new one to fit inside the copper pipe

    I have been in commercial refer for 20 years now and recently have expanded to resi work. I picked up a coil for a customer for a 99 Rheem 3 ton R-22. Waiting for it to get a little warmer before going out there but this unit has been running flawlessly since 1999 with a .070 piston. Rheem calls for a .065 with this condensing unit and the coil company where I got their coil from (AllStyle) calls for, and sent an .074 Aint that a PITA. I'm leaning towards dropping the .070 back in just because of the track record with it in this unit. What would you do?

    Hello Talyn875, First thanks for the informative video.
    I have a question. I have replaced my outside 5 ton condenser with a newer york unit (no piston taped anywhere) my coil is a allstyle 5 ton r22 and r410 coil. it has a .050 piston. It ran on r22 but my new york unit is r410. What size piston do you recommend for r410. ?

    Greetings, change a condensing unit R22 (3 tons) for a condensing unit (3 tons) R410a, use the same evaporator (perform internal cleaning), the piston that used R22 was 0.073 (Carrier), the Goodman unit comes with a piston # 0.070, I should get a Carrier piston # 0.070 or I can change it for the Goodman (they change in their physical form).

    The truth is that I say it with respect when the one who claims to be an HVAC technician is just a remove and put for not investigating what is really happening is never going to enrich the knowledge with the experiences that are lived on a day-to-day basis in this field so dedicated and that sometimes it is difficult to solve problems but in the end there is an elegant taste of victory and that is when if a machine is not giving the conditions, verifying according to the type of expansion the super Heat or the subcoolin I am not against it of technology but to give a diagnosis without hesitation just by having a contact thermometer. a volt-ampere meter clamp and some pressure gauges in good condition and having good practices when making a verification is resolved and a solution is given without much ado. if there are advanced tools great but what I'm going to do is that to give a correct diagnosis you don't need to have the mark X example to lose say what is happening. when the system is of expansion TXV or a similar one is always determined by sub cooling , if it is capillary or piston it is determined by super heat , otherwise the video is good .

    I have a new 2 ton R410a installed
    It is not cooling as cool as the old r22 unit
    I checked the charge and superheat is 2 , subcooling is around 0
    I'm telling the tech that installed it that the piston is probably TOO BIG
    They are going to come back and check
    I'm getting them to install a TXV valve instead of piston
    What do you think ?

      Working Joes Roundtable the technician come by and replace the piston orifice with TXV
      He still give all kind of excuse
      Including moving the thermostat from current location
      I told him
      Just install the TXV
      The current thermostat location is fine for the last 15 years
      After the install is done
      Bam
      The AC is cool enough for the penguin
      I would never use his company anymore
      I can fathom why people just can't fess up when they make mistake
      Just an update

  • @danielbaker9847

    It is called a piston because it pushes back and forward depending if it is in the cooling or heating mode, correct?

    • @danielbaker9847
      @danielbaker9847 8 років тому +1

      At the time I posted the question I was learning this HVAC stuff from bits and pieces I was watching on these channels. Actually the piston is a fixed orifice that does not slide back and forward like the piston in a car engine like the name suggests. The check valve accomplishes this feat. A lot of times these technicians will not answer a question because they are afraid this will encourage a novice like myself to try self repairs thus causing harm to the system or bodily harm. I certainly was confident in my theory in my earlier post wasn't I. Thank you for your inquiry.

    • @danielbaker9847
      @danielbaker9847 8 років тому

      There is no danger in someone watching one video and actually repairing a system. I have used a little of my spare time on the weekends for about a year and I still have difficulties wrapping my mind around all of the different aspects of this business. The best place I found to 'jump on' was the properties of the refrigerants and how the refrigerant accomplishes the transfer of hot and cold air. I agree that this is a tough club to get in if one is not already working in this trade. But I will still accept the few crumbs they throw out until I have enough to make a sandwich.

    • @gearhead0800
      @gearhead0800 8 років тому +1

      +Daniel Baker In the a/c mode the piston moves forward with the flow of the refrigerant and acts as a fixed orifice metering device. In heat pump mode the three way valve reverses the flow of the refrigerant pushing the piston backwards exposing more holes and allowing more refrigerant to flow thru now allowing the condenser to act as a evaporator and absorb heat from the out side air.

    • @danielbaker9847
      @danielbaker9847 8 років тому

      gearhead0800 I really appreciated your input...so I actually had it right the first time. Thank you for the correction. Does the check valve meter the direction of the flow of the refrigerant or the amount of the refrigerant?

    • @gearhead0800
      @gearhead0800 8 років тому

      +Daniel Baker the piston is actually more of a directional then a check valve as we normally think of a check valve. The direction of refrigerant flow is determined by the three-way valve. The piston when positioned forward for refrigeration acts as a fixed orifice and restricts the refrigerant from a high pressure liquid to a low pressure liquid. when the refrigerant enters the evaporator the low pressure liquid absorbs heat from the air passing over the evaporator. Two things occurs here the air is cooled by having heat removed and the refrigerant is converted from a low pressure liquid to a low pressure gas. The Change of state of the refrigerant IS the refrigerating effect.
