I Found the Strange Noise on Lili the Volvo 240...

  • Nipping up the front wheel bearings and replacing the transmission mount on my 1988 Volvo 244.
    We recently had some strange noise appear, a rotational knocking sound that was more prominent at slow speed before becoming drowned out by other road noise, after discovering play at the road wheel I decided to investigate further...
    Whilst test driving I had some bad judder when pulling away in first, so decided to replace more old rubber components to try and eliminate it...

    Have you figured out the whine by chance? Mine does the same thing! So aggravating!

    • @Involvod
      @Involvod  Рік тому +1

      No still haven't, I'm planning to jack it up soon, disconnect the prop, make sure the diff bearings turn smooth and that there's no play, then change the oil again and hope it lasts 😅

    • @Involvod
      @Involvod  Рік тому +1

      How long has yours been like it? And is it getting worse?

    • @Burritosuupreme
      @Burritosuupreme Рік тому +1

      @@Involvod it’s been like that for years. I’ve owned the car close to 10 years and if I remember correctly it’s been there for most of it. It seems like it got noticeably worse in 2019 not long after I had the driveshaft bearing replaced which may or may not have been a coincidence. That being said it hasn’t gotten worse in the last 3 years but it’s still incredibly aggravating. I did use some chassis ears recently and it seemed like the diff was making the most noise though.

    • @Involvod
      @Involvod  Рік тому +1

      @@Burritosuupreme thanks that's a relief to hear, my carrier bearing is slightly rough too so I was planning to change it, but did feel as though the noise was definitely from the diff. Going to keep an eye out for another unit as they are not the easiest to rebuild by all accounts 😬

      @@Involvod yeah and the parts for the 1031s aren’t easy or cheap to get either . I’m actually pursuing the same strategy as you trying to find another axle to swap out. Fortunately here in California 240’s still come in to the salvage yards regularly so hopefully finding a dry one happens soon. I’m guessing a leaky pinion seal that I failed to fix in time caused the predicament I’m in now… oops. I should’ve noticed that the diff was getting coated with gear oil. I’ve spoken to a few mechanics that say it’ll go indefinitely with the whine as long as the fluid remains at the proper level. Fingers crossed you find another one soon!

    Nice job. Each bit you improve makes the whole car a bit better.
    Your comment on how nice the 240/740/940s are to drive, I totally agree. In fact it is the reason I purchased my two Volvos in recent years after selling my 240 a few decades ago.
    The regret simply grew and grew until I thought "F it" I will buy one back. So I bought the 940 wagon because it was the ultimate development of the "240" platform, then a real 240 GLE with tan leather seats, which nobody seemed to want, came up for sale in my town. Now I have two.
    Thanks for the vid. PS That navy blue paint job is just beautiful. I'm a bit jelly.

    Judder could be from a contaminated clutch disk or uneven pressure from the pressure plate.
    Sometimes it helps to make some (like 2 or 3) rediculous clutch slips. Drive in like 3rd gear, give full throttle and while the engine is pulling, push in the clutch sharpish, let the revs come up , then let out the clutch gradually.
    Yes, this does create accelerated wear on the clutch disk, pressure plate and flywheel but sometimes it fixes the juddering.
    After that you can just drive it normally again.

    • @Involvod
      @Involvod  2 роки тому +1

      Hey thanks for the tip, I didn't think about clutch judder, the clutch is riding high and first is hard to get into, it's at the end of the adjustment too, so soon I'll have to do it

    Front wheel bearings are a matter of feel. Over many years I have learned to tighten firm (not tight) then back off half a turn and look for the split pin hole. But hard to do with multi grips . Need a fitted adjustable spanner at the minimum . A spanner at least gives you that feel that multi grips can never do. I love your perseverance.

    The drain grate helps again! The clutch shudder is rather common but visually it appears to be better with the new mount.
    As for the differential whine, DANA 30 rear ends in my experience are not very quiet. My current 142S has very little, my first car decades ago, a 145S had quite a pronounced whine.

    • @Involvod
      @Involvod  2 роки тому +1

      That makes me feel alot better! It hasn't gotten any worse as far as I can tell, the oil is up to level and clean looking, I might change it anyway for good measure, but hopefully it just keeps going!

    • @mathuetax
      @mathuetax 2 роки тому +2

      @@Involvod The best way to know is to pull the cover and see what the tooth wear is like. Since I doubt you really drive the car hard it is likely to never be a problem. Some DANA 30's just whine/howl, they shouldn't, but many do. The 145 I had when I was in my teens (As I previously mentioned) had howled since new when I asked my father about it in 1988 or so. I did not drive that car gently, I made it do things that Jan Wilsgaard never had in mind when he designed it.

    Great work as always!
    I usually use my impact to fully seat the wheel bearing cap. I learned the lesson the hard way when I destroyed a MK2 Golf spindle 😂
    Engine and transmission mounts almost always seem to be bad on the cars I get. But it's always such a wonderful feeling to replace them all!
    The Canadian 245 feels like a new car with all the new bushings! (And sway bars + chassis braces of course!)

    @10:18 Otherwise, it won't necessarily transform the Volvo into a Vulva because there has been some progress in manufacturing while the car was out of production. Unless you use the cheapest parts made of "chinesium." If a part is expensive because it is rare, it is completely different to it being superior quality.
