Leatherhead may have been a questionable adaptation of the cartoon but the sculp itself is really great.
I do agree on that! Odd how we didn’t get any other sculpts like this 🤓
Agree. It was one of my favorites in the 80s
Leatherhead is totally fine, the playmates figures were never 100% accurate to cartoon same as MOTU were not accurate to Filmation series.
leatherhead one of the coolest figure
Yups
As a big Leatherhead fan especially the Cajun version he was always one of my favorites, but I can definitely understand why he isn't your cup of tea. He needed to be a lot bigger. Sculpt was great but I feel they made him small because of packaging since he was packaged very differently than other figures.
He does look more like the comic version 🤓
I, too, was taken aback by Leatherhead when I first saw him.
The disconnect between the FW cartoon series and Playmates toy line was huge.
Yeah that was enjoyable, but leave Leatherhead alone 😂 he and I spent quite a bit of time together when I was a kid
He’s still a cool actionfigure 🤠 thanks for watching!
He should have been able to look forward, I couldn't have him stand without him looking to god
I liked the Leatherhead figure because you could detach the top of his head. I used to act out stories with my figures for my little bro and cousins. When I killed of Leatherhead they were shocked and laughing thinking I broke my toy on purpose. Lmao great times. Leo had to do it because Leatherhead was about to kill Raph! 😂 😜
Lol I think we thought up better stories in our heads then what the adults made for us. Wish I could get that imagination back.
Despite not actually being a movie based figure (and I assume the similarity is a coincidence), Wacky Action Leo's facial expression reminds me lot of Leo's facial expression in the 1990 movie when the Turtles are battling Shredder on the roof, and Leo ends up on the ground with the pointed end of Shredder's weapon is right up against his neck.
It does have that expression 🤣
For me it all comes down to the original Shredder. he was the #1 most important bad guy and #5 most important figure in the franchise (if not higher). That figure was TERRIBLE. Articulation was weird and goofy. Couldn't do any cool martial arts moves... couldn't have cool sword fights... couldn't stand or pose... and he was IMPORTANT. I cut the foot soldiers slack since they were weird robots doomed to end up in a pile on the floor... but SHREDDER??! They needed a good one. However many times they repainted him (never knew about the comic repaint) would be my #1-#? most disappointing figures. In my opinion they never did do a good version. Weird varients, action features, freaky mutations... but never a good solid iconic/classic shredder.
As for the rest.. .All those insane variants. Even as a kid i didn't want cowboy turtles or sports turtles. (maybe the universal monsters ones... but that just checks another fandom). I loved the turtles but man... if i had to come up with a top 40 figures i think sucked i wouldn't have much trouble :P
I hated the fact the orginal Shredder wasn't wearing a top and had a squishy head, always put me off it.
But you could do Top 5 Rarest figures too! People love seeing if things in their collection are valuable!
Indeed 🤓 working on one but i want to get good footage of the figures in card
@@EdsRetroGeekOut I think you'll be coming good friends with Google Images for that one :D
@@Larry What's funny, is I think some of the rarest figures are from the Japanese version of the Super Mutants line. lol
My Shredder doesn't have a squishy head.
My Shredder never had a squishy head. Did seem odd he didn't have a shirt and was annoying he had essentially one way to pose him
I know the Leatherhead figure looked totally wrong but it was always one of my favorites just because it looked straight up like a gator.
Oh my god YES!! Thank you so much for doing this!! 😍 Loved seeing which 5 you picked!
Thanks so much for the idea 🤠 Would love to see your top 10 best and top 5 worst figures in the Jurassic Park line!
I loved my Foot Soldier and Leatherhead figures back in the day. I was fascinated by Leatherdead's jaw articulation lol.
Me too! I used it as a play feature after I saw another kid doing the same.
tbh all those wackey actions were kinda dumb but donatello was the least practicle, coudnt stand was basically a bath tub toy cause it could "swim"
Agreed 😂👌
Dude, you're not wrong, but that was my first action figure ever. So he gets a free pass from me.
I got him in an Easter basket and it was a bathtub toy.
I’m guessing the Foot Soldiers being in the crouch position was for them to fit in the packaging, cause in the Netflix show “Toys That Made Us” one of the toy designers said they had to make Shredder crouching to fit in the packaging so I would assume the same would go for the Foot Soldiers as well.
Indeed 😮
Whacky action Don was my least favorite. I just hated those legs and he would never stand up. He was the only Don I had for a couple of years too which was frustrating.
Yeah he was terrible cuz he was like a bath toy 😅
Those early figures came out before the cartoon series was even produced. Cartoons were based on figures. That’s why there’s “toon” Turtles Toy line later.
I love your accent it sounded like "Letterhead" and he was a villain of TMNT that would send letters to the turtles to stop their shananigans :P
The accent made me cringe.
@@Kara_Kay_Eschel Your comment made me cringe.
He totally said Letterhead
I really hated the wight lifting Don from the sports line, i even traded him as a kid for a couple of GIjoe.
Good trade 🤘
Should check Leatherhead in the old b&w Mirage Studios comics. He was massive and terrifying
The toyline was separate from the TV Show and Comics. They used a lot of the same characters as the tv show but they were a separate entity and could do whatever they wanted.
I'm glad the Troll Turtles weren't on this list because I will defend troll dolls to the death! I fell madly in love with them in the 90's while I couldn't figure out why the Beanie Babies were such a big deal.
I like the troll turtles! They even did them in giant versions 🤩
Classic cases of the CEO/CFO overriding the designers 😂. "I don't care that it's not ready, let's sell it!"
Totally true 🤣
I like how shredder looks like he's taking a dump. I like to put him on fearsome flush.
🤣🤣🤣
I was never a fan of many of the gimmick or themed figures even though I owned most all of them. My favorites tmnt figures were bullseye, dirtbag, rat king, panda Khan, slash and usagi yojimbo. I am sure there is a bunch I can't remember.
Dirtbag so awesome 🤠
This is a really well put together upload, you've definitely got the editing skills to make this kind of content. My suggestion would be the top 5 most quirky Masters of the Universe figures! I'm looking at you Snout Spout :D
Snout spout for sure his weapon’s sole purpose is to hold up that snout 🤣 so many wacky ones in the motu line that would definitly work as a top 5! Thanks for watching
The shredder figure was hunched and bent because the figure itself is nearly 7" tall. It was never going to fit scale or packaging.
Susti-vocho in the back! That’s how we called here in Mexico, to the vw bettle from Ghostbusters! Man you have a awesome collection! Great vid by the way! Tmnt it my favorite series by far! Im so glad find this channel, have a great day Ed!
Thanks buddy
Perhaps someone already said this, but the first came the toy, then came the cartoon. It's the exact same way with vintage MOTU. In this case, Playmates created Leatherhead and the cartoon artists then created a cartoon version of it. As a kid I never had Leatherhead, but one of my good friends did and I was completely envious of him. I thought it was the most badass sculpts ever. He's definitely in my top 10 best TMNT figures.
First came the comic
Super TMNT old school fan. Thanks for making this, I have been there since the beginning of the turtles and now work on animation and special effects because of it. _
I'll have disagree with the number 2 choice. I actually prefer the toon Shredder over the original 1988 release. Yes, it's just a repaint. And yes, the goofy awkward stance is unchanged. But as vintage Playmates TMNT toys go, it's as close to Shredder's cartoon appearance you can get.
That repaint made the Shredder 1988 toy look awesome. Also the metallic repaint of the Foot Soldier was great.
I had that last donny...got it from Hobby Lobby back in the day
Dude I used to have one of those anime turtle toys as a kid it was Leonardo but I had no idea what kind of ninja turtle it was
The hit & miss designs is the reason why I collected NECA instead of Super 7 Ultimates. I look at them as "been there done that" and I wanted something new besides a size boost. But back in the day, I loved the Playmates line to death
They had the best back in the day 😁
I remember being very frustrated because I could never find Super Mutants Shredder in stores back in the day.
He is probably the coolest of the supermutants
I have 4 out of 5 of these figures (no super mutants). Across the whole line my top 5 worst would probably be: April the Ravishing Reporter, April the Ninja Newscaster, Kowabunga Kickboxin’ Leo, krazy Klownin’ Mike, and Road Ready Don.
That kickboxing leo indeed!
I think the dumbest TMNT figure has to be the Bodacious Birthday Classic Party Reptile Leo. He had a party whistle that slid out of his shell and you had to actually put your mouth on an action figure.
Yeah he was pretty goofy gimmick wise🤓
Wacky action Leo is my face when I go to the restroom at school and the bell rings for next class.
🤣🤣🤣
I watched the Netflix doco on TMNT toys and they said they had to squash Shredder to save money so they didn't need to change the packaging. I guess they did it to the Foot Solder too.
The Super Turtle's feel like they were trying to get in on Power Rangers back in the day
Yeah they were based on the anime but did feel a lot like super sentai
@@EdsRetroGeekOut If I didn't know it was a tmnt figure,I'd assume it was from an obscure anime
There might have been some sort of copyright issue between the Comic/Fred Wolf animation and Playmates where if Playmates wanted to make a toy of a certain character they would have to get the permission of the Fred Wolf studios and if they didn't want to give them the rights they would have to use the Comic version of said character.
I always though my TMNT toys were bootlegs, now i realize that they aren´t
The fact that Super Mutation merch made it outside of Japan is kinda surprising.
I have the Footsoldier and Shredder action figures and love 'em both 🙂
I loved Leatherhead. How the heck did April not make the list? She was so lame and boring. Even Mark Taylor hates her.
I didn’t even think of april and there’s a lotta aprils but it was more about how the figure didn’t fit the cartoon or just wasn’t looking good
I hate Wacky Action Mike's head sculpt worse, but that's just me.
Ralph has the best out the bunch but they’re all kinda bad 🤣
I was bummed when I ripped my og Foot Soldier out of the blister and discovered he was hard to pose and play with.
Mine broke a leg 😅 i think I was trying to pose him
good list, as for bad head sculpts you haven't seen bad till you've seen many of the TMNT bootlegs out there, especially the ones with pentagrams on their heads, see Phelous's videos on TMNT bootlegs for more info
what you don't understand is being crouched down like that with the knees bent is a defensive position. In the military i learned this especially with MOUT training and also Brazilian judo. It makes you a smaller target also helps with balance if attacked. In a action figure though it does not work very well because of the weight balance in them they don't have muscles like human's. So the people that designed these action figures were thinking outside of the box and being realistic its's actually pretty amazing.
They actually had him standing up but they already had fixed blister which wouldn’t allow bigger figure so they made em crouch
Leo looks very scared of something 😂
Its such a weird facesculpt 😆
Ed! Great video dude! I felt like you looked at the camera more than usual! Bodacious!!!
Thanks buddy 🤠
i can definitely see why leatherhead is on the list. he's more of an aligator in clothing than actual leatherhead. and given the reissue didn't really fix anything from the looks of things.
same with the super mutation. but it seems that the ones that made it over here suffer from 6 inch megazord syndrome in which the transformation gimmick is removed completely and the back looks cheaply done.
The reissues are cashgrabs 😅
Only thing I do not like about oirignal foot soldier is the gorilla like body structure. Otherwise it is cool. But all those crazy cosmonaut, samurai etc variants - these are all horrible, I would never want these as a kid, they were ridiculous even then.
Leatherhead was actually a good guy in the Mirage comics and the 2003 animated series.
the crouching figs where to fit in the blister packs, mass production problems
Where can I find the super tmnt saint figure??
I always hated the sports themed figures. Not very ninja. The Halfcourt Giraffe bothered me the most. Something about that basketball hoop/net permanently sculpted around his long neck bugged me as a kid, and it still bugs me as an adult.
Some of thesports ones were ok but to have that big of a subline seemed like overkill indeed. Havent seen a halfcourt 😢
@@EdsRetroGeekOut
You're lucky you haven't seen him. He's an assault on the eyes. LOL. Think he came out in 1992. Never bought him, just remember seeing it in the store.
I agree with your pics except leather head he was always One of my favorites him and pizza face was my go to bad guys
Pizza face 🤩 perfection! His hat was supposed to come off exposing another head
Man, i loved the anime turles as a kid. I wanted them so bad! Fo one thing they uad great neutral poses (unlike the foot soldiers and shredder)
Yeah they don’t fall over easily indeed 🤠
You got to understand why most of the figures are not standing up right because they wouldn't fit in the tunnels for the sewer playset or in the vehicles like the drill module or the technodrome seats that's why they are in a crouching pose, now a days the figures are nice but they were not ment to be played with so ya they look nice and accurate but we will probably never see a neca sewer playset it would be too huge and expensive not all the figures would fit if one did come out. I do agree with you on some of the figures faces they do look ridiculous and the super mutants were only for over seas they weren't as popular anymore the show kinda sucked toward the end we got some random mutations in the shows end they looked all buff but not like the super mutants you see in Japan.
Shredder and foot soldier crounching pose was made for fitting the bubble of carded figures
🤓 awesome!
Fun video! Really like the editing here.
Thanks 🤓
I feel like the leather head got better with the toy line. I may be alone on that one. I love the toy line leather head over the animated one.
I had the super mutants michaelangelo, more specifically the one that transformed into a super-mutant as a kid. I thought it was a really weird and cool figure. It wasn't an import and I think I got it from a KB toys, so either the video's wrong and there WAS a North American release of the mutating super mutants, or I mandela-jumped timelines at some point in my life.
It's so weird how there were 2 japan exclusive TV specials that never got imported though, one of the strangest things about those is every character looks the same as they do in the normal series save for shredder who inexplicably looks like a goofy anime character.
I found a foot soldier with ball jointed shoulders.
Great content! I had a few different kinds of turtles as a kid and my least favorites to play with were: Wacky Leo (in this very video), Wacky Raph (way better than Leo though), and Talkin' Leo. I hated the giant sewer/shell thing on the talking ones and was not a fan of the spinning mechanisms on the wacky turtles that stuck out from their bodies (and their faces/designs aren't doing them any favors). I didn't own any of the of the other figures in this video but they all look pretty cool.
If feel like those really took away from the playability. What’s the best gimmick turtle tough?
Kinda new to your channel.have you done a video on the pizza tossing turtles?
Not yet but they will be features in a new list ;)!
@@EdsRetroGeekOut awesome i cant wait.they are so unique and different lol but great
So the farmers ninja turtles didn’t make the cut?
I think they look decent 🤓
The number 1 turtle can transform into the original ninja turtle
Actually that’s a different release this is the super mutants... the japanese had a super turtles release sorta like the mutations in which you can transform in between the original and the anime type ... there’s also the mutant masters which is a rerelease of the super turtles for the us market
Leatherhead sculpt is amazing and overall he looks cool, but its just another case, where Playmates and cartoon has widely different interpretations of the character. Shredder is is just pain in the neck. Outside of him being half-naked for no reason, I really don't understand who'd approved of his pose. Its impossible to make him stand normally, since he is always falling.
At least his cartoon-like re-release has more or less accurate colors.
You mean to tell me.. of all of those wacky stupid incarnations, you selected primarily the 1988 figures. You have to be kidding me!!!
Yeah i like the wacky ones 🤓
I had that Foot Soldier and Shredder... Oroku is still intact, minus the cape. I always thought he looked like suffering from famine and not menacing. The soldier on the other hand... Yeah, I could never make him stand up. The weapons were cool, but the figures WERE SO DAMN FRAGILE. I barely keep the torso, arms and ONE FOOT together, the rest... Bebop lost a hand and Rocksteady its head ☹️
My foot soldier lost his legs when i was a kid 😅
@@EdsRetroGeekOut mine its a REAL "Foot Soldier", yours is a.... A... "No Foot Soldier" 😅
My number one worst was due to the gimmick. Playmates released a line that could talk. TALK! I was super excited and saved up my allowance to get a Leonardo (my favorite). I had immediate regret once I opened the package and tried the gimmick. They came with a long strip of ridged plastic that you inserted in the figure’s side that when pulled out at just the right speed almost kind of sounded like speech. Due to the shape of the diaphragm needed to produce even that terrible sound, they also had to change out the shell on the turtle’s back to a flat, perforated manhole cover. I was never more disappointed in a toy in my life. I think that one toy probably ended my desire to continue collecting that figure line.
Nice video. I concur. Top five worst GI Joe would be interesting. They had so many stinkers. Hell. They had a guy named Snow Job. Not a bad figure...but damn that name.
Ah, my very first TMNT figure - wacky action Leo. I have a very soft spot for him, but I did hate that his head didn't look like the normal release (the figure I REALLY wanted!). Still Leo's action feature was pretty cool
The weapons were pretty sweet 🤓🤘
Someone has probably already said this but I read that the reason why shredder and the foot soldiers are crouching down is because they are taller than the turtles in the show. They wanted to keep that idea running so they had to hunch them down to keep them in scale. It seems like the worse of 2 options
It’s actually because playmates had already produced the blisters for the packaging. Anaglyph studios who provided sculpts for the bad guys created shredder standing tall and then had to go to a crouch position to have them fit into the bubble for the cards that were already created based on the varner turtle sculpts 🤓
TOP 5 MOTU - Worst Action Figures PLEASE
That’s what leather head looks like in the classic 1991 mighty mutanimals
Leatherhead looks like Archieverse Leatherhead... who wasn't a villain.
I always hated the mutant changer turtles but my favorite where the head popping turtles .
Head droppin turtles are awesome 🤓
I always thought scratch was the worst. He did not appear anywhere and is just weird.
He was in the comics 🤓
Thats obviously a turtle costume from the Arkham games.
Laura Legends is dope as hell. Shout out to her!
Agreed 🥳
I'm pretty sure that's the first thing he did
The BEST Foot Soldier was the MUTATIONS figure. It was taller, more sturdy, and it looked so cool as a robot with gold circuitry inside.
Agreed 🤘🤓
I’m not sure if the Super Mutant Turtle belongs in the list. Yeah, it’s stupid, but it’s stupid in an awesome way that only Japan can provide.
True 🤔🤘
Hahahahaaa It is an Army of Toilett sitter from the Footsoldiers 🤣🤣🤣
🤣🤣🤣
Can someone explain what is the foot soldier weapon called, "Turtle Shell biter"
i loved how many little weapons you got with the original tmnt
Introducing the new Leonardo Super Terrified Edition!
That bebop with the spinny head was terrible
🤣 i liked his headsculpt tough
@@EdsRetroGeekOut same i could never get his head straight. I had every ninja turtle. The only ones i didnt have were the ones i didnt want. Still have my sewer playset. Its missing a few things but still does the job
Playmates original Shredder doesn't look cartoon Shredder because the show wasn't finished when the toy was designed.
I didn't even know there was a mutation foot soldier lol
R.I.P Bebop LMFAO.😔🙏🏽🤷🏽♂️🤣
How about a Top 5 worst MOTU figures
There are none ....🤣nah i could do that!
I was wondered did the toy designers ever even actually watched the show!?!🤷♂️
Well they started out seperatly, you had a team doing comics, a team creating toys and one doing the cartoon. In the beginning they didn’t quite know what the other was doing and they had to steer a bit away from the muc more violent comic source material so that’s why it has never been quite 1/1 the cartoon and toys
Top 10 best Nickelodeon tmnt figuers
leather head is a very cool sculpt come on bro
Can you do your top ten favorite scenes from all the movies? Thanks
Aw yeah 🤩 gonna be hard to pick tough
Maybe do a top 10 OG Transformers video?
Working on it 🤓🤘
Is that Eddie in the bottom right of the background.
You mean iron maiden eddie?
Great idea! I hate when they don’t stand up!
So frustrating when you have to place one last figure and then they all fall like dominoes 🤣
5:05 He look like the version from the SNES game.
