Top down is always the best way to start any fire, either in a fireplace or in an outdoor firepit

Why do you not recommend pushing the heat control all the way in? In the manual it says the C series is certified to always draw air, even in the lowest setting to get a very long lasting burn.

You're correct. In fact my C5 still fires way too much with the damper all the way in

@markh1ggins what do you mean with "too much"? It provides about 5kw of heat. If the rooms gets to hot, your room need less than 5kw to be heated. You can put in less wood, but the stove is designed to burn with highest efficiency on normal load. You can see the temperatures in the stove details he showed. If the room still gets to hot, you can open a door to another room to increase the amount of kw required to heat the room. In that case you're actually increasing the room "size" to be able to absorb more kw. What we did is placing a stove ventilator on top of the stove to disperse the heat through a nearby door, and get more even heat distribution. Saves you 1 or 2 degrees in the room the stove is in.

Thanks for the comment. On the tinderbox, you’ll find the glass will blacken if you push the control fully in. It also produces smoke which is why we suggest you control the stove but avoid shutting it down fully.
All stoves works differently and the charnwood does allow the control to be pushed fully in without blackening the glass. No detriment either way. Just a different operation.
