    Great explanation! Worth reminding though, that the included Lavalier II has a fairly typical SPL limit: you'll still get clipping, as a hardware limitation before the signal even gets to 32-bit audio processing, when your talent yells or sings very loudly. So, 32-bit float never guarantees "no clipping." It just makes it much more likely to avoid.

    • @Marlonorellana
      @Marlonorellana Рік тому +2

      Which lavs would you suggest? Because that’s why I’m hesitant on getting these

    • @rodemic
      @rodemic  Рік тому +22

      The Lavalier II has a SPL of around 120db, which is about as loud as a police siren, helicopter or jackhammer. Of course, you can distort sound far below its SPL by, for example pressing a microphone right against your mouth as it would become distorted by the breath coming out of your mouth (similar to how you can distort a mic by just blowing into it). So for most applications that don't involve power tools or warfare, we think it's pretty unlikely to clip your recordings using this setup.

    • @focuspulling
      @focuspulling Рік тому +2

      @@rodemic I experienced two persistent occasions of clipping using a Rode Lavalier (RodeLink legacy microphone) with a 32-bit float recorder. Once it was concealed beneath an opera singer's blouse, and moderately loud transients of her singing clipped (waveform inspection confirmed this). Another time, concealed inside a male poetry reciter's shirt, moderate shouting transients also clipped. There is inconsistent measurement criteria between these mics: your Lavalier II actually hits a ceiling of 106dB at 1% THD, then 120dB at 10% THD; while the RodeLink lav only specifies 110dB at 1% THD - suggesting the predecessor has more headroom actually. I think that the existence of several competing niche models of low-sensitivity lavaliers by other manufacturers (e.g., a Countryman B3 variant, and the DPL 4061/6061) commonly bought for theatrical and similar high-amplitude productions, shows that consumers need to be prepared for further customization depending on use case exceptions that actually aren't rare. In all, high/medium/low sensitivity relative to noise floor is a compromising balance, and it's likely that you chose the perfect middle ground for most use cases - but, clipping will still happen to most users.

    • @focuspulling
      @focuspulling Рік тому

      @@Marlonorellana The two most widespread and acclaimed lower-sensitivity/high-SPL-limit lavalier microphones are the DPA 4061/6061, and the Countryman B3 variant designated as low-sensivity. These are niche products compared to the general purpose Rode Lavalier II which strikes a good balance between noise floor and headroom, which is a physical compromise on the analog input side that 32-bit float headroom actually cannot help downstream.

    Well, is not true that you can boost the volume as much as you need and it will remain low, the digital noise might remain low but microphone noise (the problematic one) will not, in even in 24bits digital noise is low enough to not be too much of a problem. I guess anyway that getting rid of the preamp volume issue is very important advance.

    There is the same option, 32 bit float recording, on the Wireless Go II. Is it different somehow?

    • @rodemic
      @rodemic  Рік тому

      32-bit float recording isn't a feature on the GO II, but audio can be *exported* from the transmitters in 32 bit. Of course, simply exporting 24 bit audio in a 32-bit format doesn't give you the extra dynamic range you would recieve if the file was actually recorded in 32-bit float.
      The reason you're able to export 24-bit audio in 32-bit float is because some users might want all the files for a project to be in the same format, or maybe there are some audio effects that could work better on 32-bit files than they would on 24-bit files. So in summary, although you can export your Wireless GO II recordings in 32-bit, this is a bit different than audio files which are natively recorded in 32-bit float.

    • @rodemic
      @rodemic  Рік тому

      They can export your audio as a 32-bit wav file, but this is a bit different to a file which is actually recorded in "32-bit float". A file recorded in 32-bit float will allow you to normalise your audio to avoid clipping, and other benefits, whereas a file which is recorded in 24-bit audio and exported in 32-bit will not.

    • @rodemic
      @rodemic  6 місяців тому

      That's a good question @AbeTheRock! If you have a 32-bit float recorder, then by definition, your recordings would be in 32-bit float. However, if you're asking whether the superior dynamic range that 32-bit float recordings have would get passed to your recorder, the answer is no. @@rodemic thanks! So by adjusting the loudness via rode central, I’m assuming this is an export option? Otherwise I can just use the 32 bit recordings as is and adjust loudness in my edit software, and that would be the same as if it was done in the rode app?

    Would it be a fair analogy to say 32bit Float is to audio as HDR is to video?

      Hey there BlaqViper! We actually made a whole video addressing this question here: ua-cam.com/video/05fzb5nj4SA/v-deo.html

    I feel like I got played on the rode wireless go ii not being 32-bit float, but I'm excited about this product. Maybe send it to a small creator who shoots weddings and tons of talking heads to test and give his feedback 🙌🏾 @WillieShawJR

    If you want to use a stereo microphone, can you use one transmitter to record both left and right channel?

    • @rodemic
      @rodemic  Рік тому +1

      The recievers just output mono, so no, that wouldn't be possible. If you use a splitter you could record into both transmitters, but this isn't a supported use case.
