- One of the best tracks from the unbelievably important The The. The The are helmed by the wonderful Matt Johnson. Formed in the late seventies the music that they have produced invariably contains a political slant (and for all you Neo-Liberals it is a left-wing view of the world). This particular track concerns what Johnson believes to be the Americanisation of the UK. This, for those of you not aware, was a big issue in the eighties as many felt that the Reagan-Thatcher love in was detrimental to the UK. I think that it is fair to say that the moneytarist policies espoused by those two has been morally (and arguably, when looking at the problems associated with the current recession) economically a bad thing. However, I am wary of blaming 'America' as so much has come from that country that has been beneficial - not least music. This is obviously an issue too big to dwell on here. For more on the music (and politics) of The The then please visit this site: www.thethe.com/.
Heartland is beautifully sung, almost painful in its intensity. I cannot make up my mind if the world that Johnson describesas being lost is a rather rose tinted view. What is undeniable is that we (the UK) have moved into a clone town state. In that sense I totally agree with Johnson's perspective. I would be interested to know what my viewer thinks as well...
Never more relevant than today. Working class people voting for Boris Johnson. My heart bleeds.
saw this incredible band at the Sydney Opera House last night! It was an outstanding performance. I cant believe that Matt Johnson wrote those songs in his youth and 30 years later they are still so eminent! Clearly ahead of his time.
Talk about an anthem for our time... This seems more relevant in 2022 than when it was originally written. Prophetic, even 😔
More relevant today 10th of july '2019 than ever before.
Written in the eighties ,the message is more relevant now 30yrs later ??
Well I am American, but I love Matt Johnson/The The and this is my favorite song! I understand the point, the bomb will never devastate as much as cultural influences..... imperialism is a real destroyer to cultural identity.
"This is how the world ends....
not with a bang,, but with a" Coke!
I forgot how much I loved this song
Dalglish in the video too. The reaction to this song in the Royal Court theatre in Liverpool was unbelievable. Top man Matt.
"The bankers are getting sweaty...." has Matt foretold about the rescission caused by the bankers?
Still a great song, so many years on.
I met this man in Wardour Street many years ago loved his stuff before that i didnt speak to him wish i had now!
Brilliant song. Absolutely 100%.
Matt is my favourite British singer song writer. He is obviously devoted to the Christian lord. He is such a beautiful guy.
With Brexshit about to explode and Trump about to ream our arses, this song is more relevant than ever. Genius.
Is the 51 first state song?
A phrophecy that is now coming true.....
"this is the 51st state of the US", a prophecy!
How true.
Serfs all. In the 1400s it was found that more money could be made from estates that had sheep and not serfs. European slaughterhouse. The historians describe this as the time when sheep ate men.
what a great song
