- The issues raised in the film THE OIL MACHINE have become even more urgent with recent upheavals in energy security, the cost of living, and our climate. At the same time, the UK government is rushing to offer 100 new licences for North Sea oil and gas exploration. One year on from the COP26 climate conference in Glasgow and coinciding with COP27, we’re now going back to the film’s contributors to ask them how recent global events have shaped the ongoing debate about oil.
Here's our catch-up with Sir David King, formerly the UK Government's Chief Scientific Advisor and Special Representative for Climate Change. He is the founder of the Cambridge Centre for Climate Repair and the Climate Crisis Advisory Group.

Thank you. The issue of hope is an interesting one; I ran out of hope in about 2013 after starting to be an environmentalist in the 1980s. However it was the slogan 'When hope dies, action begins' caused me to try to get Extinction Rebellion started in my city in September 2018, and I believe that acceptance of the reality of our situation enables me to act clearly and consciously in the face of death. I'd support moves to re-freeze the Arctic, but equally urgently we need to 'just stop oil', although as our civilisation and economy is based on oil, stopping oil would be a big push towards collapse. Better a managed descent than the descent overcoming us, though.
I'll be going to see your film. Solidarity.
Thanks for your comment, Compostjohn. Looking forward to welcoming you among our audiences - where are you based? /Ben
It is population overshoot & we are already in for climate state ending event in the next 30 years. All wealth is about to be rated for lack of insurance.
An excellent interview which really reflects the urgency of our predicament.
Nationalize The Oil Machine Now!!!!!
11:35 the END
"If we stop all emissions"??
Tell us, Mr King, what is the optimum level of co2 and what level of co2 will cause all plant life to end?
280 to 350 ppm would be ideal, bit like with had the last 10,000years....
Bonkers!
Save Our Planet Now
I am the first American to serve a sentence for a nonviolent civil disobedience on the climate crisis(2009). It is sad that Sir David is unaware of the evidence presented by British PhD Dr John Campbell that excess deaths in the developed world have e skyrocketed since the COVID vaccine rollout. Does Sir David realize that pregnant women in the US who held certain jobs were mandated to receive the COVID vax even though the UK does not allow pregnant or possibly pregnant women to receive such?
Sir you contracted a FLU...!!!! Stop with naming the game which states fear of not knowing...
Same thing happened when Britain had china over a barrel with opium addiction that refused to stop because they knew it would affect their financial issues and even declared war on them over it well how?
Unfortunately nothing of consequence came from cop. After all it was hosted by a oil executive. Giving money to corrupt governments won't do anything but make rich people richer
Nope
1: Refreeze the arctic.
2: Remove greenhouse gases from the atmosphere (at scale).
3: Switch away from fossil fuels.
4: Take drugs and kick back.
Go away, you grifters, we know this was never about climate and all about politics. We know your game and it's going to end in civil wars. You would do well to think what will happen to those found guilty of crimes against humanity in which you are engaged when this is all over.
