To get wood into shapes like that shield is actually pretty easy, all you need to do is steam the wood and clamp it into a form/mould. Super easy, barely an inconvenience 👍🏻 Edit: or you could just do some joinery work to get the exact same effect 😂
@@miniman10th What I've mostly learned today is that my grandad wasn't quite the expert carpenter he thought he was 😂 A lot of my reaction to the shield on the big lad is from watching my normally very stoic ex-RAF grandad try and bend sheets or planks of wood and it going horribly wrong and then swearing about it at length lmao Whiskey barrels and like, curved stuff, fine, but the angles on this shield just brought back weird memories of lots of snapped bits of plank all over the garage floor!
The issue with cities is that lore wise they are successors to the Empire. And the Empire was realistic Renaissance Germany (with countless Historic miniatures that worked for their rank and file units) that had magic and griffins. They couldn't copyright that so they are overcompensating with iconography with the new models. The new models just feel so business focused.

maybe his posture's better because they've had him doing rows and balancing a book-on-his-head elocution lessons to more stably carry the crowsnest dude. I also agree a halfling would've mad more sense. Person on a giant, halfling on an ogre. yes.
It's an awesome idea. But it should have been a LOTR sized ogre I think. Something that looks like it could easily hold this crowsnest up and keep it stable without rocking the dude on top around whenever he swings his weapon.
I love it, personally >_< It's just such a ridiculous and fun idea. I kinda hope there'll be more city ogres in the Cities roster, that could be really fun. I've always loved Ogryn in 40k and while I know these are different, just the idea of something in that vein seems really fun. Maybe a Cities of Sigmar version of Leadbelchers? "Sometimes our artillery battery decides to go for assault and battery..."
For the shield, you could have the main and lower bits be separate bits of wood and do some nice jointery to make them fit together. You wouldn't NEED a reinforcement over the joint, but I agree some would look good there.
I really like how silly it is, i do hope there might be an option for one without a crows nest. funny enough i like the ogor looking more human like city living has changed its actual physique
I agree with you that the Ogor could look a bit more classic Ogor-ish, lto me he ooks more like a giant human. But I do like the model, and it makes me want to buy one to build like it is shown and one extra just to use the tower by itself on some scenery.
I’m thinking for the wood, it’s a piece carved from a massive block to get the depth. But it is strange to look at. Iron banding would help. But yeah, just thinking it’s taken from a massive tree, then cut/routed into to get the depth.
The problem is it goes silly but doesn't fully embrace it, so it's half silly and half grounded. Stick a mast or flagpole on the back of the crows nest and give the big guy an eyepatch. Sorted.
Gotta love them putting a dude with a musket (already not that accurate a weapon) on a moving platform that wants to be in melee, where ot would swing around wildly.
Ideally I'd kitbash the crows nest onto the shield, perhaps put broad spikes on the bottom of the shield resembling a gate. It makes more sense to me both visually and functionally (in my head).
Personally, I’m loving this model. As a Cities player this is easily my favorite that they’ve shown off so far. It’s so ridiculous that it circles back around to being cool, and from an in universe stand point it does make a kind of sense. You want this guy on the high ground so he can act as a sentry/sniper, so why not put him on a mobile piece of high ground that can wallop anyone who gets too close? That said, I do hope there’s an option for the Fusil Major on foot, and I hope we can take a unit of Ogor Warhulks as their own thing. Also we need a buddy cop story about a fusil Major and his Ogor friend. 40K got the infinite and the Divine, it’s AOS’s turn now
Ogres are incredibly adaptable. They change in size and behavior due to their environment and lifestyle pretty heavily. They get huge due to how much eating and fighting they do. And in a single generation can turn into Gorgers after being chucked in a cave and forced to eat rocks and bugs. Makes sense that one’s that lived in a city for a generation and adapted to being more habitable next to humans looks different, checks out. It’s a cool idea.
Agree on this one not sitting quite right. If it was the just ogre that would be cool. With the crows nest though, I just can’t see how the ogre would engage in combat without overbalancing and sending the little dude flying
The shields have been throwing me a bit as well. With the metal work trims it would feel better with a bit more metal details than adding multiple angles to the wood. The look is a bit form over function but like the Ankh morpokh city watch theme the range is getting.
The thing you're not liking is probably the silhouette: You have a chunky orgre with a chunky shield and then you have a thin pole and then a top-heavy crow's nest big enough for a gunner
Since AoS is way more hopeful then the grim grimness of the grimdark 40k, maybe we will see revels from the Evil races in the cities? It is warhammer fantasy. How on earth can it be ridiculous? As mentioned, they have elves that ride fish on land, in bubbles. Land sharks. C'mon. I think it is brilliant in it's out of the box hilarity/genius. The more 'civilised', domesticated city ogre works so well. I could see him in the city watch, patrolling the streets at night, dealing with pub fights, duels, and incompetent adventurers, then getting the call to protect the city against some crazy threat. Perhaps some half dressed women and a cooking pot of blood on wheels.. 🤷♂️
Ahh yes. Let us fill minis with "detail" so that they are a distinct IP which we can copyright! When it comes to the shield curve, I believe that steam and/or water could be used to bend wood. The fact that you have Order ogors and Chaos aelves makes the setting feel a bit more believable and nuanced than the strict racial segregation of many of the older ranges.
Hate it, if only because it's almost good. The ogre without the crows nest is a really cool imperial ogre. The crows nest on top of a ship or the shipwreck terrain piece would look cool. Together it just makes me sigh and think "man, this is so dangerously close to being cool". The Cities of Sigmar stuff so far looks either good, or good but too much.
I don’t mind the fact that the ogre is standing up straight. After all, it’s not like with orcs, who literally have a skeletal structure that makes them (somewhat) hunchbacked). I’d like to think that most “regular” ogres look the way they do because of a lack of discipline (and not all do; look at the new tyrant, he’s standing pretty straight), and maybe even because their appetite is getting the better of them and they unconsciously lean forward a bit to get to their food faster. It would make sense that this here ogre, being part of the cities of Sigmar, would be better trained, and thus taught proper military posture.
How can you be done with CoS? We’ve seen four models from this refresh, let alone only one version of them. Also it’s a good thing to have some kind of new version of a faction.
