My Dude, you called it ! I took mine out today put it in a pond and took off on my maiden flight. It ran across the water perfectly took off and I had that mini heart attack just like you said. I over adjusted the elevator and after about 3 seconds of flight time I put her head first in the drink at full throttle, it killed everyone on board! I laughed out loud and my camera crew (Wife) couldn't believe that I was laughing. I told her that you called it and word for word everything happened just as you said it would. So,now I am over my first crash and as soon as I get a new propeller and nose cone she will fly again. I think that my second flight will be with the ugly landing gear on solid ground. With all that said this is a very ruggedly built plane.
AWESOME!!! "Everyone died" - LOL! I just had one of those yesterday when we were filming our next "early release" - "Everyone died" - LOL
"Heart attacks" might be one of the best parts of flying RC!!! I'm so glad you took the plunge - LOL - so many dad jokes here...and pun-tasticly I might add...anyway, glad you're in the air - keep at it!!!!
I have to agree with you as this is the best plane to learn on. I started on wheels and did fine but it is much easier to practice landing with floats on the water! You have less to worry about in the open water. It’s nice to be able to hit the switch and recover in a split second if needed. I give it a 10 out of 10 on this Plane!
This is one of my favorite planes to fly. It's great for even the intermediate flyer. It's extremely durable. I crashed it nose first when my safe mode wasn't working but sustained little damage. This plane is good for getting warmed up on first flights before moving on to low wing warbirds.
Always a pleasure watching and learning from your vids.
Thanks Randall! Was watching a video today about a couple "Ambition Strikes" getting a boat, and made me think about you!
@@BrianPhillipsRC good morning from the land of pleasant living.
Speaking of thinking of you, I had friends in town from Council Bluffs Iowa.
The FW 190 is almost ready.
The final Parts I need to get her in the air will be here next week.
I have her setup with a Pan Servo for FPV line of sight flying with a GoPro.
A pair of goggle and vtx will be down the road.
Please say hello to Megan, appreciate you guys so much.
Always fun watching you in "Kid Mode" 😁
LOL - thanks ;)
This is what my Doughtier picked out as her first RC Airplane although i did get the Plug & Fly so we could use our NX Transmitters. It flys awesome and is friggin tough! She like the color of this better that the Apprentice.
Very cool! Good pick, and I think this RTF was an unusually good choice, since it actually worked well with the provided Tx, something we Didn't enjoy as much in the 1.3m PA-18, or the EasyTrainer that we just did too.
That being said, PNP is even better, if you can handle a few extra bucks for the AR630, AR631, or AR637T so you can have AS3X and SAFE, if you want/need it.
Went out this afternoon after some fairly significant repairs to my Ranger (broken wing and rudder servo replacement) after having crashed it pretty hard about a month ago. Have been itching to get back in the air again. After almost crashing it immediately on my first takeoff without safe on and somehow saving it by what can only be described as sheer will, throttle and up elevator, I settled down and did numerous successful takeoffs and landings with her, some however that ended up as flop overs in the grass without damage. She's a tough unit. Flew with the provided 1300 mah battery and also threw in a 2700 mah pack which provided a really LONG flight time. Hoping to get back out tomorrow as nice weather is expected again. Get out while you can be before Fall turns into Winter. Love this plane!
Great video sir
So nice of you, thanks!
Lovely plane it's like the traditional trainers I used to fly with an engine.
We love this plane as a beginner!
FMS is really delivering. Cool plane! And as usual Camera Crew is on point and Brian is silly lol
Yes they are! We've been real happy with FMS, especially the planes!
I got mine plug n play and use the FSI6X and this plane is great!!! Better than any other trainer I have had. Everyone says go get that ugly ass Hobby zone AeroScout but imo this 1220 FMS Ranger is WAAAAAY better and WAAAAY nicer looking. And a 3s 2200 fits perfectly snug in the battery hatch and I get 8 min of flight out of one battery. You can even get 10-12 if youre just putsin around the sky relaxing. But this bird is definitely a smooth flyer but also capable of some basic aerobatic performance as well. Knife edge not so much but your rolls and loops, Cuban,/Cuban 8s, and hammerheads will be just fine. Stall tendencies are non existent! It just hovers down to the ground with up elevator. You can literally dead stick this thing from way up there all the way to the ground like a glider. Its an all around great plane. I got mine for $189 with floats PNP after the 4th if July sale. I believe the 15% sale is still going on. Cant beat a 1220 mm Cessna 150/152 for under $200! Its a relaxing flyer but can handle some fun as well. 😁Love your vids brother!!
This is a GREAT choice, but I do also like the AeroScout ;)
Had mine for many years, fly it often and with flaperons it is one of my favorites
Very nice! I wonder if there's a way for us to get full functioning Flapperons with REFLEX. Obviously with an AR630, AR631, AR637T, we'd be fine to make that happen, but less flexibility in a RTF equipped with the Reflex.
I just bought one and put it together this evening. Nervous to try it but when the weather allows I will find a place to fly it.
Just ordered one yesterday. I'm stoked. Got the R.T.R. w/ floats. I'll come back and let you know how I did hahaha. Thanks for the video Sir.
Congratulations! The Ranger is a great plane. Welcome to the hobby!
Hi Brian I love all your video's you are literally living my RC dream to be able to fly right outside your front door is amazing it really would be a dream come true.
Keep up the great channel watching you and your family enjoy the RC hobby really does lift my spirits and makes my family happy watching you enjoy this wonderful hobby.
Thanks! Glad you're here with us, and appreciate your kind words!
Just found your channel as I'm looking to get into RC flying after many years of running RC Nitro offroad vehicles. Did i just find the Jack Black of RC flying? Lol.. I'll be purchasing this plane in a few weeks based on your review and I'll be sure to use your affiliate link. Thanks for the amazing content.
Brian i just know you'll be the first to get your review on the FMS Futura 64mm soon 👍🏾 the green flys faster 😉
I hope so ;) We JUST found out about it too.
I also have this model , and still my Fleet Commander! nice video_! you are a great pilot !
Thanks! This Ranger is a GREAT plane...do you have the 1800mm??? OHHHHHHH BOY is it great!
I have the 1200. I prefer planes max 1400mm, too big isn't good for the place I fly. Go Ranger!!!
Mine shot straight up about 55 feet and went straight down to catastrophic disaster on the first flight. Spinner shattered to 50 pieces. Wing broke off. Motor Mount broke. Cowling broke. The entire front got skewshed in. It was a sad day. It was about a total of 5 seconds. About a month ago and I’m still working on it 😢 but he will fly again! Yellow Thunder will rise again!
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Very sorry to hear that!!!
I too just crashed a plane, and can confirm, it does suck!!!! BUT, like you said, it will fly again, just a little glue here and there, and she'll be held back together. This plane doesn't need the spinner, BTW, but it does admittedly make it look a lot nicer.
When you get ready to fly her again, I would highly suggest, if at all possible, track down a veteran (or more veteran) RC pilot, and have them look over stuff, and see if maybe something is running in REVERSE. If she climbed like you described, I fear you had your elevator reversed, or possibly the stabilizer was goofed up in some way.
Reminds me of the Arrows Bigfoot with a tricycle landing gear on it…….. another great video
The Bigfoot is made by FMS too ;) FYI ;)
I love this channel! I have learned so much. I have just got this plane and can’t wait for spring and some calm weather to get it out. Would it be possible for you to have a picture in a picture showing the controller as you fly? We could then see what the sticks are doing in relation to what the air craft is doing as you fly. Thanks for sharing all your knowledge with us rookies.
Fugly nose gear, too funny, spot on though!!
It is, but it works! :)
Just commenting for the algorythm. No reply needed -keep cranking out the content! 😊
Love the video, as always!! 👍
Thanks! Will do!
Had my first flights today with the ranger 1st time I got it in the air I was so nervous I forgot to breath nearly passed out but u gathered myself ND just went easy ND as the flight counts continued that nervous not in my stomach ND the verg of crapping my pants went away ND it became the most fun I had with rc in a long time though the 15 to 20mph winds did keep me on edge
I TOLD YOU! Amazing experience, right?!?!
I'm new to the hobby and love all the videos!!!! If you ever wanna dontate some of the mess fown in the dungen, I'd be more than happy to take a few off your hands! Would be cool to be to own and fly something you had. Since you got me into the hobby! 😊. I currently fly paramotors so rc airplane I figured would be up my alley. I bought the ranger 1220mm rtf and the aeroscout s2 1.1m rtf. I know they are both beginner friendly. The aeroscout seems a little more snappy and "looks" faster from the smaller looking. The ranger seems a little more locked in and calm. Which one would you recommend me to fly for my maiden?
Awesome! Glad your here with us, and I hope to join you in the air with PPG WAY more than I've already done. To be frank, I need to block out some time to get back out to Quincy Illinois and get a bit more training in with my trainer, but I have flown 10 times. I'd like to be to the point where I can throw on the rig, and take a quick 20 mintute flight at the end of all the business every other day or some such thing, for a few months of the year, when it's real nice out...but to date, my plans have failed me ;( I'm working incredibly hard to set the stage for safety and success in my PPG efforts, since there's the "life and death" component to that, VS the life or death of the plane that we get in RC ;)
As for "taking them off our hands" - LOL - I love these things, which is why I'm so dang obsessed with them. If you would want to have one that I flew, we could work out something, but you'd need to hit me up on email (in the about tab). We don't really list them for sale, but we will make some exceptions in the right conditions, and for the right interested parties...but usually, I just want to hoard them, since I don't get to fly them but a few times, then we're onto the next one...it's one of the sharpest double edged swards in my life...I get my hands on these things, but then I just get to look at them, but can't touch - the pain is palpable, walking through the "dungeon".
Either way, very glad you're here with us, and if you're flying though (PPG) hit me up too, we could fly together if stars align?
NIIIIICE 👌🏻 Glad to see a RTF version 👍🏻
$249 with floats, not bad...
Agreed!
How do you control or adjust rates or expo on those radios or are they preprogrammed and u can’t adjust ?
Hi Brian, love your vids. I don't have a flat runway like a drive, just park grass. Can you do take off and landings with this FMS on grass without damage? Your thoughts? Thanks.
Brian, good video. A fine plane for a good price. Slightly off subject but is how does “Nall in the Fall” compare with the spring event? Have you been or know others who have? Thanks!
I can't speak to the Nall in the Fall, in comparison, given I haven't been there before, but I can say it's supposed to be SMALLER and more informal, but I would LOVE to get a chance to go again. I bet the trees will be absolutely BEAUTIFUL!!!
Hi Brian, can you recall how the Arrows Trekker 1.2m compares to the FMS Ranger 1200mm. I know they are fairly similar and both docile but I want the more sporty / agile of the two.
Similar in performance, but honestly, if you want to see how it performed, we have videos of it, and it's been quite a while since I flew that one.
This Ranger is amazing, but I would try for the larger 1800mm Ranger ( bprc.me/FMS_Ranger ), if you can possibly afford it...then there's ZERO comparison. I LOVE THAT PLANE!!!!!!!
Also, the 1.7m PA-18 ( bprc.me/FMS_PA18 ) is also GLORIOUS!!!!!!
BUT even the 1.3m Ranger ( bprc.me/FMS_Ranger ) is good, ONLY issue is the RTF - you'll be wishing you had a programmable Tx, and AS3X OR Reflex, as this plane flies good, but the RTF just leaves you wanting a little bit on controls...I suppose if you had no basis for comparison, it wouldn't be missed, the crisp, clean controls of the NX10 ( bprc.me/Tx ) or similar ;)
Trekker - bprc.me/Arrows_Trekker_RTF | bprc.me/Arrows_Trekker_PNP
Mine is in the mail. As well as a reflex for my easy trainer
Good luck Mike!
cute plane, are you saying the Reflex V2 gyro in this model acts like "safe" select in the spektrum planes? that s amazing, if thats correct. because I use the flysky ia-6 transmitter, (which works great with all my 70,80 and 90mm jets) but it would be nice if I could use a gyro that has a self correcting switch, (and doesnt have to be used with spektrum radio)
Yes
Yep the Reflex V2 is pretty much the same as SAFE which is awesome!!! Since you already have a FlySky transmitter you could get the BNF version if they have a BNF version???
You will enjoy this little Model! Even though I love our Spektrum NX Transmitters the Reflex works awesome and is what my Daughter learned to fly on.
It is a STABILIZER" (like AS3X) and also provides "AUTO-LEVELING" (like SAFE) if you wish, as well as "OFF"
Hi, friend! I would like to acquire my first FMS brand airplane (but I am actually very concerned about the compatibility of the electronics, that is... most Horizon RTF airplanes contain spektrum electronics and many times their models are limited to said electronics... which raises them to a slightly higher cost! (E-flite, hobbyzone) my question: Is it possible to install any other ESC and receiver like Flysky on FMS airplanes in order to reduce costs and not lose so much quality? .. How does the quality of the ESCs that FMS puts on their planes compare to the renowned Spektrum electronics? greetings Which and what brand of transmitters does FMS use for its airplanes? thanks for sharing
i added flaps to mine as i needed STOL capabilities.
I bet it flies great with flaps!?!?!
@@EJ-74 it flies great and landings are easy with the limited space I have .
@@seylansilva3481 Cool 👍🏻
100% - I did too on our PNP version, and it was an amazing improvement, but this plane does well, even without flaps ;)
Would love some how to info on putting flaps in
🎉Thank You really appropriate video Charlo South Africa George western cape
You're very welcome, and thank YOU for being here with us!
Thank you Brian for your Amazing Video and Test . I just joined an Electric only RC Plane Club today and was looking desperately which Electric Trainer RC Plane to Buy to start and after watching numerous videos on UA-cam including yours i finally found the Model i need ... Thank you soooooo much ... Does it come in both Modes 1 and 2 ?? because i could not find any Mode 1 ... I would also appreciate if there is any Trainer Electric RC Glider that you would strongly recommend me , please. Awaiting your reply , please, God bless you.
off topic but how do you get the servos out of the wing? I broke the original and I'm trying to swap them out. I'm brand new. It must be glued in..
It's a bit of a pain, but when you have to get one out, you can use some KICKER, CA Accelerator to help break down the China Glue holding the servo in, but then you'll have to dry out the pocket when you get the new one in.
GLUE | CA | KICKER | FOAM2FOAM | SUPPLIES
www.brianphillipsrc.com/supplies
Kicker is CA Accelerator, but it tends to break down the "China" glue that's under these servos and makes them super easy to get out, OR just pull them out. It's not fun the first few times, but you'll get it figured out. Trust me, your first few planes are gonna look like frankensite after a few flights, so be prepared to deal with it for a while. It gets a LOT better when your skills get better, so don't worry too much, if you can.
Good luck! We have loads of repairs like this. Old, but just one that came to mind... Spitfire 1.2m dead on arrival servo

Part 2 - ua-cam.com/video/zahTr-CDJx8/v-deo.html
Part 3 - ua-cam.com/video/7bU9Q-9ucbc/v-deo.html
...we have since done a lot better quality footage, but this is good and helpful for you, I suspect. Watch it and see if you can pick up a tip or two ;)
@@BrianPhillipsRC Hey man, thanks for your detailed reply back! I've been watching tons of your videos.. I'm quite a fan.. I ended up cutting them out which I couldn't or wouldn't do if a servo went out with a good wing. So thank you! I ended up putting the new servos in with hot glue which I hate because of all the stringy crap. Anyways I placed them in and pitted the the foam then put a nice layer of HG on the top of the servo and foam via the seams. So it should be easy to replace. On another note my replacement wing is one solid piece! PS. I went through 3 batteries on the repair no crashes and brought her home.. I want to get good enough to fly jets some day..
Hey Brian got a ? I got this plane not to long ago nd everything bin great this past weekend I've run into a problem ware I'm loosing power for a glitch sec or 2 I'm meen nothing works like the receiver is getting no power at all then it snaps out of it very nerve racking BTW any tips in wat to look for my plane is the rtf version so I'm using the stock flysky stuff I'm thinking it's a esc problem but I'm only guessing
OH BOY! That's crazy! I'd start by looking over everything, connection wise, and seeing if there's a loose connection on the battery connector. If not, then you need to start on the ESC - REPLACE IT FIRST - since it has the BEC, which powers the Rx, that's where I'd start. If the problem persists, then you'll need to look into the Rx, then from there, for example, if you have a short somewhere else, causing the problem (VERY UNUSUAL BTW) then you'll have to track it down. This is how I would look at it, OR YOU CAN JUST ASK FMS TO REPLACE IT. This is a pretty big safety issue, so I'd probably defer to them, if it's NEW.
@@BrianPhillipsRC yea that's wat I was thinking I ordered an esc nd jump up 10 amps to a 30amp esc im guilty of running baterry pack train on her prob why im having the problem it was cheap enough I'll put that in nd see ware I'm at and im really not the guy to call companies with my problems
what are your thoughts on adding a very small pet camera to the roof of this thing? looks like the plane has power to move it, but with the aerodynamics be too compromised to fly it?
People do this all the time. You can use an FPV set and have very positive results, but we don't share such footage as it would then require Part 107 for that additional footage (I know - what a joke, but we can't do stuff that will get us hammered by the FAA - sorry!)
@@BrianPhillipsRC awesome! thanks for the info
will the ranger fly like a apprentice 1.2...... I have been using real flight simulator and flying a apprentice 1.5 which so much easier than a aero scout (the plane I actually have)...
UPS delivered my new Ranger 1220 PNP same day you posted this video. Wish you would do a build set-up of the PNP version.
He did also with Flaperons
We did, this just happens to be the RTF...check the playlist for this beauty ;)
@@BrianPhillipsRC I found the other video for PNP!! Exactly what I needed!! Thanks to you and camera crew for all you do for the hobby!!!
Really Like This FMS Trainer, Especially The Yellow Color! PS It Needs Flaps + Lights Thou... Dang-it Why Couldn't You Of Crashed It, Soo I Could Get Another New Version!!! 🤔😜🤣🤣😁😎
This is a GREAT plane for a RTF, but even without Flaps and LED's, it's a winner ;)
Hey Brian. I was just wondering if you buy a plane from FMS like the Ranger and you need to buy a receiver also, would you rather use a receiver that had as3x and safe or use the FMS reflex and a regular receiver. I’m assuming reflex is the same thing as as3x and safe? Just wondering how you’d set it up. Thanks
Yes, Reflex is the same as as3x and safe
hi brian here in denmark menny young kids starts with rtf an then later on more skils plane take care jan
That's a great way to do it, and wish it would be like that for some time, but the FAA is about to mess this all up with RID - let's hope they fall flat on their face and it gets shut down ASAP when it starts causing all sorts of problems...
Hey Brian, which plane, this one or the Horizon Hobby Apprentice? Just in general

This video sold me! I have been flying a XK Sky King Glider Red 750mm (29.5") Wingspan - RTF for a few months now and wanted to upgrade. (Praying I can fly this FMS Ranger). Does anyone have any tips or suggestions on turning/Aileron movement for this Ranger? Any feedback is appreciated.
Awesome videos by the way.
Thanks!
Just fly it, you'll LOVE IT. If you're flying the Sky King, just get ready for a REAL plane ;) You will be blown away at how nice this one flies!!!
As for tips, watch through our Unbox, Build, Radio Setup for a few more details, but just keep in mind, THIS was the RTF, ready to fly, but if you got the PNF, plug and fly, we also reviewed that one too, if you would want more help in that way...we also have that in the PLAYLIST.
@@BrianPhillipsRC I actually watched the unbox & build set up video first (I do that often on your videos because you do such a great job at explaining how things work & the build setup makes it way easier to see it be done by someone else, appreciate it!).
For Auto-level, when turning/rolling (left or right), is rudder input needed as well?
I also purchased the RTF version for this plane as well
Thanks!
When I used to fly nitro trainers you just bank and slightly pull back, a plane can fly without you so don't over input, helicopters are my thing now different ball game they don't fly on their own requiring constant tiny inputs but that's the fun of them.
@@petewatts30 Thank you for the feedback! I appreciate it.
First flight was Sunday and couldn’t be happier! Flew in about 8 mph winds and auto level had no issues. Great plane.
Definitely going to get more batteries lol! Fun flyer
does this plane come with the battery cause i know some rtf that has no battery
This video is the "MAIDEN FLIGHTS" video. We cover the answer to your question in the "UNBOX, BUILD, & RADIO SETUP". Both videos are available from the playlist for a particular plane, and the reason I'm not answering, is I just can't remember - sorry!!!
Thanks for understanding! It can get a bit hard to keep the details strait, but also might want to check the link, since sometimes they CHANGE the package offerings.

@@BrianPhillipsRC Thank you i watched the vid and ofc it does sorry for the confusion thank you tho for helping.
Whats top speed on it is it fast
Not sure. Top speed isn't super important to me, so I don't really pay attention, unless it's a SUPER fast plane, and that's "all" it does ;) Speed is always relative to what you're flying around, in my opinion.
Great video Brian and Wifey. I think if you go down into that Corn Field, you might NEVER find your airplane again. I've been subscribed to your Channel for years now. Hopefully you can help me out. I have a DX9 Transmitter. Can you direct me to s Good video that walks me through, how to program a New, out of the box AR630 Receiver. With SAFE and AS3X. It would be greatly appreciated if you could. THANKS.
I actually DID crash in the corn field the other day, for a video you haven't yet seen, but should release soon ;)
Corn is actually not so bad, look down the rows and find the plane, usually gently resting on the upper leaves. Soybeans are the worst, if you don't see where it goes down, planes are a nightmare to find in those, they submerge like a submarine and need a meticulous search pattern to find.
