You worked it out!! Yeah theres like 5-10 popular tunes/rhythms that most chants fit into. So you can hear it once, and then everyone can join in.
The funny thing is, this is just some random person's account of songs they've heard at games. There's so many different clubs and chants around the country that put these to shame but this one person's Walsall perspective has Americans In shock when there's so much more hilarious/random chants.

Vindaloo is an Indian curry, of which the British version is incredibly popular here. Speaking of, you should check out some of the football related songs we have, such as Vindaloo by Fat Les, some laughs to be had. Three Lions is another big one, you might have heard the chant, "Its coming home" before which is from that song

Not only are there standard rhythms to song but most of them are popular songs that everybody knows (some of them are songs we sing in church).
One of my closest friends is a liverpool fan, and I’m a Manchester United fan, we’ll drive together to old Trafford or anfield, spend the day singing this shit against each other, then we drive home together, it’s rivalry but it’s typical uk banter, there’s no offence behind any of it, he knows to respect the Munich disaster, and I know to respect the Hillsborough disaster, no songs should ever be sung about those issues, everything else if just fair game

the chants are part of the culture and usually are based on pop songs that are famous here (new chants anyway)

THOSE chants were all from the LOWER DIVISIONS hence the smaller stadiums. Now multiply the sound 10 Fold for the 20 Premier League stadia, with a couple of exceptions.

Regards the 'provocative' nature of the chants, it's just atmosphere, everyone knows it's a bit of fun, everyone's had a couple of pints, and it's a back and forth that ebbs and flows with the match.
Also, you'll note that while the 'lyrics' might change, there are a lot of recurring melodies, which makes it easier for someone to start something off, as everyone knows the melodies, so just need to hear whatever words someone has come up with a few times before they can join in and the chant spreads through the stand :)
EDIT: Also also, the whole community feel of Football comes from times past, you'd work all week and get your pay packet on the Friday, then on Saturday everyone would head down to watch their local team play, it's still the way today, 90% of the games are played at 3pm on Saturday afternoon, through all Leagues.

Yeah there are several comments about it.
Nothing is off limits with us Brits. Having said that, I go to Rugby and there is none of this banter at all. It is entirely a football thing (soccer).
When it comes to how these sports were created and the culture around them football is for everybody to jus express themselves however they want and come together with the communities around them. Rugby is a upper class sport first played by private schools and watched and played by more wealthy and more well-mannered people.

Having said that, around half of my teams players (Leicester Tigers) are from state education and most of the fans are just normal, working class folks like myself. I was turned off football in the 90’s when I would see violence, intimidation, bigotry every week. Rugby is very inclusive and a totally safe environment. There is plenty of drinking but never any hostility.
Real British humour is street humour where animal/vegetable/mineral is open to have the piss taken out of it as we are not as socially restrained as the USA is. We see a man wearing a bad wig or a ugly man wearing a dress and make up, we will laugh our bollocks off or make a joke about it. Football tribalism chanting has turned into a art over the years and reflects our creative humorous character.
Hi, it won't be long before Footy fans are banned from chanting with all the wining moaning people taking control of our fun. The Spanish kiss, was it a sex attack or just an exited boss being a bit over zealous? We'll have to wait and see. I hope that our British banter will never be squashed by the many so called do gooders invading our lives. I'm a 63 year old gay guy and couldn't care less what anyone calls me or anyone else aslong as it isn't proper threatening . Its just banter and humour. My brother in law is gay, and some of things I say to him & he says to me would curl peoples toes. We are both ruthless and the is no limit to the depravity we would both stoop to go in our pursuit to make jokes about each others sexuality. Does it make me a homophobe ? Of course not, as I love him with all my heart and could not give a shit about his lifestyle. It's when we restrict or put limits on seeing/hearing what we humans find funny that is abhorrent. Traditionally the word "football" just referred to whichever code of the sport (rugby union, rugby league, association football) was the most popular in that area. I might be wrong but the term "soccer" came from Oxford University students because rugby, being the most popular sport there at the time, was exclusively referred to as just "football". Over time association football grew to become the dominant form of the sport so "football" came to just mean association football, but there's still people of a certain generation who'll refer to it as soccer in the UK. So you calling it soccer in the US is sort of technically correct because American football is the dominant form of the sport where you live.
Association Football became soccer.
In the same way rugby became rugger.
The 'you're not famous anymore' chant was to either Bolton or Derby who were once in the top division and got relegated to lower division so they are very good now

If it sounds provocative it is. It is meant to be. It is aimed at the opposite fans, team or player. There are literally thousands of different chants up and down the country. Anyone can be picked on at a football match. Players are very often verbally abused when they take a corner.
Football fans are rivals and are passionate about their respective clubs.. But chants and songs from the terraces is all about creativity and insults

Football will never work in America because the place is too big. You need home and away supporters and local rivalries. England has about 60 million people crammed into a space 1/3rd the size of Texas with over 120 professional teams. In America people watch high school and college sports because small towns rarely have a professional team., here it's rare you could find a place that doesn't have a professional team within 30 miles, even in rural areas.

Just a couple of weeks ago I had to record a video of me using some DJ turntables for a buyer. Wthout realising I was tapping on my belly lol
Some old school England football songs from world cups and euro's passed are sung at most internationals. Like Three Loins and world in motion and many more song depending on the nation sing it. But in some cases 6000 fans in the UK make a lot of noise I'm about 1.5 miles away from my local club and you can hear them playing. So imagine a Premier League matchday where they get well well over 20,000 fans at home matches. You'd probably hear them from a lot lot lot further away than where i am. Football is entertainment if it's not entertaining on the pitch then football fans make there own, Like Mexican Wave's and Chant's.
As per your comment - of course the chants are provocative, they are to intimidate an opposing side's player or team. They are also meant to show disappointment in their own team if they are not playing well.

Soccer comes from the UK we switched to using the word football in 1974 to fall in line with the rest of the world.

Dude, soccer is the abbreviation for Association Football. The Brits founded the Football Association at some point in the 19th century. And that organization has been the rule keeper as well as the organizer of some of the earliest competitions. Before that they called every ball related sport played on foot football, as opposed to sports that were played on horseback. That's the same reason why you call your American football that. The precursors of that, like Rugby, were all invented by the Brits and way back when they called all of them football.

Everyone knows the melodies of the chants so once it’s repeated a few times, it’s very easy to sing along
Go to any derby match and I don’t mean the city of Derby but any rival club match like Liverpool versus Manchester United or a city derby like Man City v man United if you are after a bit of bile and a ruck.

im one of those rare , i dont give a crap about football , but i drove my mate to a game, quite a big one as it happens and look forward to suffering sitting through the game , to my surprise the stadium full of people was awesome , the chants the atmosphere the whole lot was amazing to be a part of , no idea what the result was but , result me being ecstatic at a football game . mob mentality is real and powerful thing .

It all seems like friendly banter and it is for most of the fans but there are a hell of a lot that actually fucking hate each other simply for supporting another team and will actually beat, stab and even kill people because of it, its fucking insane. There is a movie called Green street which is actually about this. Football has the most roofless fans of any sport, there are actually gangs called firms, based solely on football and there team and they fight each other all the time to the point where it can be a death sentence for a fan of a different team to enter another's territory. I'm not sure how bad things are these days but i can't see it being much better than the old days when it comes to violence.

In London you have a choice of 17 professional clubs, seven, if memory serves me correct, are in the Premier League but there are a couple I'd leave alone unless you want to sing about bubbles (Micheal Jacksons monkey), or sit in silence in a library!

Which match, or at least ground to go to? Well, to hear anything remotely witty, anywhere in London's a total waste of time. I'd recommend North England with the most promising options being St. James's Park (Newcastle FC), Anfield (Liverpool FC) or Old Trafford (Manchester United FC)..... and try to pick a trad. BIG 'Derby' match against v. long term opponents (usually clubs from the same city or a nearby rival.) So Liverpool vs Everton, say, but also Liverpool vs Man. Utd. or Man. Utd. vs Man. City.
