Winning the league gets you either a spot on the various international cups (like the champions league), or puts you to the next higher division. So it is worth more in the long run. The nation's cup allows teams from all divisions to compete against each other, so it provides a good overview and for a team of a lower division winning the cup means a lot of prestige, the prize money is worth more to them and if they are a mid-tier team (meaning no chance to rise up to the next division) it is a desireable alternative championship. Also winners of the nation's cup may score a spot on the international cup, which means especially for a low-tier team the money jackpot.

Think of it as 'the long game' (league) and the short game (cup). You can get tossed out of the cup for a single poor performance, whereas the league requires consistency throughout the season, and getting relegated means you didn't really get your c**p together during the whole season!

Second division teams literally never win a cup or qualify for one of the three European tournaments (Conference League, Europa League and the prestigious Champions League). An English Team playing in League 1 (3rd division) is professional and can be considered mid-tier; they might or might not have a chance to get promoted. But definitely unlikely to the Premier League and just as unlikely winning the FA Cup. I am much more familiar with German football, my home country though

  • @WithTwoFlakes

Nowadays in England a club winning the League is more important. But 30 or 40 years ago, winning the FA Cup was widely regarded by the fans as a much bigger deal.
Over 700 clubs enter the FA Cup, there are prelim rounds to winnow down the smaller clubs prior to the 1st round proper. Obviously smaller clubs just love the FA Cup as they might win enough in the early rounds and to get a chance to play a big name team many levels above them. That game could mean huge money for a small club from TV money and from gate receipts. Cup games split the gate money equally (45% - 45%) between the two clubs, the other 10% goes to the FA. So, for example, if a tiny semi-pro club from the 6th tier is lucky enough to make it through to the 3rd round proper and get to play away at a Premier league team, then there just might be a crowd of say 50,000 paying £50 a ticket. 45% of that is serious money to a club that usually plays its home games in front of 300 folks paying £8 a ticket.

The league is more important, and when your team loses its chance to win or even gets relegated, it feels genuinely depressing because you've been following the ups and downs for the whole year.
But I'd say the cup is more fun. I love it when some obscure team from the middle of nowhere suddenly gets a winning streak against top teams, and it's okay because losing in the cup doesn't mean the world.

A couple of things he did mention , most professional clubs are over 100 years old and generations of fans support them no matter which league division they are in . In England the top two of each division are promoted with the third spot decide by a play off tournament between the next four sides , the finals are played at Wembley . We have two cups although the FA. Cup is the world's oldest and qualifying starts in August among the lowest teams . The big clubs come in the lower professional divisions enter in December and the big clubs in January with the final in May . It's still the most prestigious domestic cup competition with The final broadcast live to many Countries .
The Premiership is the big league to win for money and prestige as is the Champions league in Europe .

The league is usually considered most important. To be the best over 38 games really shows you are the most consistently good team in your league. Winning the cup is also important, especially for teams that are not quite able to win over a full season, but who might be able to defeat the best teams over a single game (which most teams in England can, it is a very competitive league when viewed over single games only - anyone can defeat anyone once). It is also quite profitable to win the cup as the prize money is substantial.
Winning the Champions League with your club team is like winning the World Cup with your country. It is the highest title your team can get, and it has to be won by defeating the best of the best. This is also where fans finally get to see the biggest teams clash. Games like Bayern Munich - Paris or Liverpool - Barcelona are always gonna get massive viewership when showed on TV.

Winning the league is the major thing; the Cup is less important than it used to be. But, remember, there are 3 or four competitions going on at the same time (if you are also involved in the Champions League), which is why top clubs need to have such big squads and why there is so much football played in a season, especially when you also take into account competitions that involve National teams (World Cup, European Nations Cup, etc). Take it gradually and you'll work it all out. You don't have to become an instant expert. 🙂

The cup is a secondary title but wining this title can make a team enter the Champions League. So for the teams that can reach the top is a wo¡nderful tournament to win a title and get acces to a major tournament.

A typical timeline of a football fan will start in
July: with the preseason friendly games, kind of like US exhibition games, this normally means big teams playing in the States or more medium sized teams playing against random opponents they have arranged to play.
August: Not long after Champions League and Europa League qualification begins, half of the teams in these competitions have already qualified based on their result the previous season that ended in May, but the final spots are made up of teams that will play each other for the last spots, this is normally a 128ish team knockout, with teams from places like Iceland and Luxembourg in the early rounds with clubs from bigger nations joining in the last few rounds. Brackets don't really exist as its common in football for draws to happen, not draws as in 0-0 2-2, but where names are pulled out of a ball like the lottery to decide the fixtures.
After the Qualification begins the leagues often start, not all leagues start at the same time but its normally at some point in August. These will normally be played on weekend, occasionally Mondays/Fridays, and the odd midweek game on Wednesday. Some countries play a super cup to start the season, Superpokal in Germany, Supercopa del Rey in Spain, this is where the League winner plays the Cup winner, this game you'd think from an American perspective would be the biggest game, but most people don't value it highly.
A few weeks into the season Cup games which often happen midweek start, these are separate from the league tables and will see teams play teams from other divisions, these are domestic, ie you only play teams from your own country. Cup competitions often predate the league since back in the day leagues where harder to arrange as they required season long commitment from teams rather than playing a few games at a time like a cup. Cup games often lack momentum as they are played weeks apart but they are an important traditional part of football. The league is only valued more as it is the fairest competition, it doesn't have upsets, truly the best team wins, but the cup allows for more underdog stories.
September: Champions League/Europa League group stage begins, this will be 6 games, where you play each team twice, similar to how the Bears have to play the Packers, Lions and Vikings twice a season, the groups are random though as different teams, from different countries enter each year. this last from September to about December.
October to New Years: The season runs as normal, some countries like England and Scotland have two Cups, one called the Leagues cup, normally its ____ Cup after a sponsor, like Carling Cup, Carabao Cup, Viaplay Cup and the more traditional Cup ie the FA Cup or the Scottish Cup. The traditional one features every team in the country where as the league Cup is only the ''league'' teams, which is a term that describes the top 4 leagues in the country ie the leagues that are fully pro and not semi pro/amateur. This is minor but its important to know. Most places dont do this.
January: at this point the season is underway, the Champions League and Europa league group stage will be done and top two teams from the groups of 4 will progress to the knockouts and the 3rd place team in the case of the CL will play an extra round against the 2nd placed EL teams, both tournaments then having 16 teams that will drop to two for the final. at certain weeks during the last 5 months there will have been breaks for national teams to play in friendly matches or against each other to qualify for the World Cup or the Euros(the Euros is the WC but just for European teams, each continent has one). We might also be down to the last 16 or 8 teams in the Cup. The league will be halfway done, we often look at the team who is top of the league at Christmas as the team who will win the league, or if they fall off and choke we say, 'how could you do that you were top at Christmas'.
May: Most seasons often end about May, just like how the leagues start at different times they will often end at different times, if the top teams is so dominant that they have more points than the second place teams and the second place cant mathematically catch up they are crowned champion before the League ends. The Cup finals in most countries happen after the last matches of the league have been played, and that ends the domestic seasons in most countries. Teams that finished in the top 4 places in England, Spain, Germany and Italy are now in the Champions league for the next season. Other countries get less spots which is unfair and maybe the only big downside to Football in Europe.
The Champions League final will now be played in late May early June. This is at a neutral venue that will be selected ahead of time, like the Superbowl, except tickets aren't a rip off so that only the elites can go. There are no halftime shows and only people who like Football will watch it, you won't have watch parties where people make stupid bets and only watch for the singer, not acceptable behavior. in Europe. After the Champions League the season is over and the preseason games begin a month later.
Other things: Transfer of players can only happen during transfer windows, if a player has a contract at a team for say three years and he has only been there a year then he can only move to another team for a fee during the window, these windows normally start at the end of the season and will close a few weeks into the new season, and there is a second window at Christmas to late January. You can sign players outside these time periods but they can only play once the next window starts.
These rules are consistent because European football has an Organisation that maintains every thing called UEFA, often labelled UEFA MAFIA by many ultras. They control the Champions League, they are very corrupt but are necessary evil to maintain order. 2 years ago twelve teams from England Spain and Italy tried to break away from UEFA and found their own league and this failed hard because the fans saw that this was only for greed and they protested, and they had to step away from their multi billion dollar plans.
Last thing is that every two years Either the Euros happen, or the World Cup happens, this is the biggest and most important event in the whole sport, so pretty much 2/4 years there is no off season, meanwhile the off season of college football lasts 8 months, sheesh.
South American seasons start in January due to their seasons being inverted because they are in the Southern Hemisphere, some countries like Japan and the US also do this for their leagues. In Brazil in particular the season starts with state leagues since Brazil is so big it has individual states that are comparable to countries so they play a league competition which last 3 months before the real league starts in about March. Non Brazilian Leagues in the Americas in places like Argentina and Mexico often split the league into two halves with a champion awarded in the middle and at the end so there are two national champions a year plus the cup, I have no clue why this is and this will be foreign to even die hard European football fans but considering Argentina's influence on the world stage with Messi, Maradona, teams Boca Jrs and River Plate and their World Cups I'd thought I'd mention it.
I don't know if anyone read this but thanks if you did.

For all teams doing well in your league is important, whether is going for the title or getting a high enough position to get access to the european competions or some just staying in that league and not be relegated.
For most low level league clubs doing well in the cup is very important (known as having a good cup run), getting a match against a top tier club whether win or lose can make or break that club's season with the money generated from that game possibly being more money that they make in an entire seasons worth of league games.
The most important is not to get relegated, cause the financial hit is huge and secondary not to get into financial trouble or go bankrupt cause that means you will be relegated, some clubs as mentioned never recover.

What I meant earlier of being oversimplified is that the video did not elaborate on the three original european competions organized by UEFA (which is the regional governing body - the confederation - of soccer for Europe within the organizational global structure of FIFA). The first competition is what you know nowadays as the UEFA Champions League (it used to be called the European Cup); this competion was originally restricted only to the league champions of each member country of UEFA and played on the basis of home and away knockout elimination matches until the final. The second competition (gone for some years now) was the European Cup Winners´Cup, and in this competition only Cup Winners of member countries were allowed to participate. The third and last competition competition is what you know nowadays as the UEFA League. If you want more information on alll of the above Wikipedia has very articles on all three of the above competitions.

The glory (the "what's the bigger deal"-question") varies between countries, but generally, the league will almost always be a bigger deal (it's the longer and tougher competition, and it's less dependent on luck). That said, the cup can be very prestigious in some countries (e.g. the English FA Cup), whereas some countries barely care about it (e.g. Swedish Svenska Cupen).

05:40: The League and the Cup are whole another seperate independent tournaments.
06:50 It depends on the concept of 'Ranking'', which is huge in Europe. Every team that participates in international club tournaments contibutes to a rankink system, that indicates every summer, how many teams of each country can participate in the 3 (Uefa C L is the biggest) International Club Leagues. So, ranking ''decides'' how many, and the domestic leagues and cups decides which teams, in particular.

Way back in prehistoric times the Champions League used to be the European Cup. In this only the champions of each country played (plus the current cup holders ) on a straight random draw knockout basis over 2 legs down to a single Final. Then EUFA figured more money could be made using a league format as described in the video. For this the major leagues (EPL, La Liga, ,Bundesliga , Ligue 1, Serie A) have their top 4 teams playing , allocation of places to countries being decided on previous years performance of participating teams. Other leagues may have 1 or 2 places allocated for automatic group stages whilst the 'minor' leagues take part in a knockout competition (often played before the start of their league season) for the remaining Group Stage places. Many, many , many $$$$ are made in this stage (say ,6 games with 2 wins, 2 draws, 2 losses then elimination is still around $23 million in prize money).
As for the FA Cup in England , it is full random draw with each league level being added to the draw in successive rounds. Any FA registered club can enter so you could , in theory, have a 3rd round match between Manchester City (the current world champions)and your local pub team if they got lucky. England ,as an example, actually has 2 cup competitions - the FA cup and the League cup (restricted to the 92 Football League clubs) - run in parallel during the season. If a team got lucky and won everything i.e all 4 competitions then they would play around 68 games in about 43 weeks (plus preseason friendlies and international fixtures as appropriate such as Euro and World Cup qualifiers. Busy.

5:03 winning the League is more important , but because the title tends to go to the biggest clubs, many teams choose to try go for a domestic cup in order to win a trophy.
Winning the cup is very prestigoous and earns a spot in European continental tournaments, which can lead to more money. Even not winning, but going on a good run can have similar results.
Of course every team wants to win the league, but this is typically the ambition of 5 or 6 teams who have the resources to win games
7:00 each European league sends their champion from last year as well as the 2-4th place teams (depending on the league). Smaller leagues like Scotland and the Netherlands have to play an extra qualifying game to enter the tournament, as slots are dominated by the top 5 leagues- England,Italy, Spain, France and Germany have half the spots. The winner of the Europa League also gets a spot in the Champions League.
For example Bayern Munich were the champions of Germany in 2022, with Borussia Dortmund , RB Leipzig and Union Berlin finishing 2nd to 4th. Hence all 4 qualify for the Champions League.
Frieburg and Bayer Leverkusen finished 5th and 6th so went to the Europa League (RB Leipzig won the cup but qualified for the Champions League, so Leverkusen got their spot).
Finally in 7th position were Eintracht Frankfurt, who earned a spot in the European Conference League, the third tier competiton.
9:41 the amateur and semi pro teams enter the Cup at a much earlier stage (July or August) and usually eliminate each other before the real 1st round, where the professional teams enter (except the Premier League). The PL teams enter at the 3rd round and often get drawn against each other then and there.
By the time there are 16 teams left, it is a mixture of PL and other professional sides. The cup(s) are a big risk for Premier League sides as they now have so many games in a 3 month window, esp if they are also in Europe.

Cup and League are 2 seperate competitions but run at the same time.
The only impact from one on the other is if anyone gets injured or if 1 team had a game 2 days ago and the other's last game was 5 days ago. Indirect effects only.
League is definately the more prestegious tournament.

Champions League > League > Cup.
The Cups are basically exhibition matches. How seriously you take it depends on many factors, usually if it's your only chance of major silverware, you'll try real hard. It's counted, it's a nice win, but it's not as revered as the other trophies. It's a consolation prize or a nice addition to your campaign. Winning a double or a treble is big, which is when you win two or three of the three trophies in a single year.
The cup however gets the whole country involved. It gives a chance for smaller teams to play big teams. It gives a chance for smaller teams to make good money on TV rights for games they'd never normally get. It also shows off the skill difference and "football" difference between divisions. In Europe, in the bigger countries anyway (England, Spain, France, Italy, Germany, etc) there are levels of professionals. Top flight players are earning millions and millions a year. Obnoxious money. Next league down might have a few people earning a one or two million a year, but many hundreds of thousands at least. The next league down from there will be really nice salaries, possibly well into the six figures. The next league down from that might have solid middle-class salaries. The drop off the top flight isn't steep like it is in the US where you either make the big league, or you get a real job.

The League is the most important competition as it impacts where you play your football next season
Cup competitions aren't as big as they once were but everyone gets hyped if their teams makes it to the final of the FA cup or beats a team from a higher division.
The European cups (there are currently two) are bonus competitions, it's kinda like the extra credit of football and is one of the biggest perks for winning your domestic league or cup

The highest rated is Champions league winner. It basically mean you are the best team in the world. The next one is winning the league, it shows who was the most consistent during the year. And then it’s the cup. You can have a bad day and be knocked out, it happens. Also financially the cup has least value. The ticket and tv sponsorship income is huge in Champions league games. But winning all 3 is really special. It is very rare.

You actually have a scoring system- coefficient, each league has its own worth. Depending on the results-winning the Champions League, getting into the quarterfinals, etc.-you get points. Based on those points - coefficient, you have leagues in which the champions/winners go directly into the group stage. Runner-ups from some leagues also go directly. Other teams go through qualifications. For example, Premier league (England), first four teams can compete in champs league. Winner and runner up go directly into group stage, third and forth go trough the qualifying phase. Some leagues only have one spot. The lower the score of a league, the longer the path. Five rounds before group stage.

To answer the question about the difference about league champions and cup champions. To be simple it is 2 different competition’s running at the same time.
The league is with relegation to keep the best team collected in one league. The cup a amateur team can get a team from the pro league, and the fun is that some times the pro teams loose to the amateur. You can be a champions in both competitions in the same times.

"No drafts" is also kinda relevant, just an open market but with Financial Fair Play limiting the budgets, allegedly. Only one team is going to win the League - the Cup gets a spot in a European competition for the winner and is a valid goal (and financial incentive) for those who are out of the running for the league but still want some silverware.

The oldest Cup competition I am aware of (for obvious reasons) is the FA Cup in England (FA is Football Association). It is entirely separate from the Football League system. More than 700 clubs participate in it including amateur and semi-professional clubs from lower league levels. The clubs from the top leagues enter the competition at a later stage to give the lower sides a clear run in the early stages.

  • @avaggdu1

All the competitions are separate. Each domestic League involves the teams from each Division only and determines who consistently plays the best/worst. The English FA Cup is open to the top 10 divisions and is a knock-out competition. The English League Cup is also a knock-out competition open to the top 4 Divisions (92 teams), in 7 Rounds (with the top Division joining in Round 2 and teams competing in Europe joining in Round 3).
The European Championship is contested by teams that qualify. The top two teams in the previous season's domestic league automatically qualify. Three further teams (from 12) qualify in play-offs based on their performance in the previous season's domestic league. Eight groups of four teams then play each other twice (home & away). The top two sides from each group then start a knockout phase in Round 16, while the third-placed team drops into the UEFA Europa League.
The Europa League gets a bit complicated, but ultimately the winner qualifies for the next European Championship and the UEFA Super Cup.
Basically, the domestic league is the most important in each individual country as it allows qualification for other competitions in Europe and kudos for being "the best in the country" for each Division (allowing promotion to a higher league), with each country's version of the FA Cup a close second due to the number of teams involved.
Different competitions, with different teams eligible to qualfy, for different bragging rights, benefits and prizes.
Apologies for any errors but I'm not really interested in football, but if you want to get experience without being a geeky football nerd I recommend playing a football manager game like FM24.

UEFA rankings are very complex. In essence, there are two competitions: Champion's League (CL) and Europa Leage (EL), where CL is the higher ranked. The title holders from the former year of both CL and EL are automatically qualified for CL. In addition, title holders from the seven largest football associations (largest contributors to UEFA), will automatically have their league winners qualify for a spot. After that, UK, Spain, Germany and Italy each get four spots, for the 4 teams at the top of their national league. The league is by far the most important, to win a league your team need to preform consistently well all year long, cups have more of a luck factor. If a great team have bad day in the cup, they're out and mid size teams can go pretty far or even win in the league if they have occasionally exceptionally good matches when it matters. When a team is under performing in the league, they can focus on the cup. That's a risky move because, if you're out, you're out. While it is in theory possible that a team that get relegated wins the cup in the same year, that doesn't really happens in practice. More often the winner or the runner up of the league wins the cup too, or a medium placed team wins the cup because they focuses on it.

One thing you need to know about soccer is its very decentralised, not like the way the NFL and NBA have almost a monopoly on pro US Football and Basketball, sure there is FIFA but they dont run things the way the NFL does. Teams are bigger than the leagues themselves, and teams are not owned or controlled by the league they are in, which is why teams compete in multiple competitions, ran by different organisers. Cups also mostly predate leagues, since cups are easier to set up and dont require as much commitment from teams. in England you have the FA Cup ran by the English Football Association (who also run the national team), the League cup, ran by the EFL (English football league who control tiers 2-4 of football in England) and teams will play in Premier League at tier 1 which runs itself. Not having the league own the teams means its not in the best interest of the league to constantly meddle with the clubs to be as profitable as possible, whereas the NFL will try to rebrand and sell or relocate teams in order to increase its own profits, this is also sadly the case for US Soccer, which is ran too similar to the NFL to be considered a seriously league, but hey Messi is there, that'll distract people from its issues.

The league and the cup are two different trophies, totally independent from each other. It´s just they don´t wait for the season to end to play the cup. So one can win the league and do very bad in the cup and viceversa. Usually the league is considered more important and prestigious than the cup, so it is not strange that top teams are kicked out in the first stages of the cup since they put more effort in winning the league and don´t pay too much attention to the cup.

League is harder to win as it requires sustained quality. It's possible to win a knockout cup if you have a bit of luck. There are often 2 cups in each country too, usually one with more prestige and history.
Furthermore, the Champions League is not the only Pan-European club competition. Winning a league, being one of the runner ups, winning a cup will usually book you a place in one the 3 European competitions(Champions League, Europa League, Europa Conference League).
There are preliminary qualification rounds that apply depending on various factors, so clubs from countries like Malta, Cyprus and Former Soviet countries often get knocked out or knocked down to a lower order competition like the Conference League.

01.00 yes within the national league.the
02.38 the botom 3 teams can alse influence the outcome of the entire league by winning on having a draw with a top team, losing them crusial points
03.03 the national league is played in the weekend, the cup on wednesday evening
03.55 it doesnt matter how good or bad you are in the club it has no repercussions on the national leageu except for a psychological factor winning gives you a 'high' in confidence, (especially for the lower teams) make them perform better in their next game and visa versa plus the amount of games played in a year effects the fatigeu of the players
04.1the national league (where you become national champion if you win) is more import. and yes you can get kicked of the cup tournament and win the national league.in the netherlands the next season always starts with a match where the champion and the cup winner play for the johan cruyf bowl
07.04 the teams playing in the champions legea ar the teams that play for the national championships and are not the national teams that only play for the world cup or the cup to become champions of your continent which both are played every 4 years but its like in 2014 was a worldcup and in 2016 was the european cup (and the asian, african, oceanian and american cups)
06.16 the national champions are automatically qualified to play in the champions league (whicg is a tournament not a league on its own, just akward namegiving) than from the numbers 2 on ( i think in the netherlands is nrs 2-5 but in bigger countries there are more teams) have to qualify in a group round and yes you regurly have games in which 2 teams of the same country play each other there even have been a few finals where both finalist were from the same country

In england, we have leage (premier lage), the 4 top teams wuailfy to paly in the champions leage in europe.
Also we have two english cup compititios, one cslled thr FA cup, and one cslled the Leage cup (not to be confused with thr premier leage)
So we have 4 concurent compitions going on at the same time. September to may. If you was to win them all, (no one has) liverpool got very close 2 uears ago, losing in two finals, out of the 3 finals they was in. So they plaued the maximum games possible to play, which was 63. the same about of games the 2000/01 liverpool side that won the treble.and manchester uniteds treble winning side of 98/99. Ots a very rare achivment to play in every game possible. It means you made evey final of all 3 cup comps you entered. Plis your 38 league games.
The leage cup is the lesser of these comps the fa cup the second, but is highly regsrded, as its the oldest cup comptiton in the world. Then depending on the club, and its fan base, depends on which they hold in the highest regard out of the premier league or the chsmpions league.
My team (liverpool) holds 6 european cups, so we have european hearatige, so we see thst as ther pinochle. However, we hold 19 leage titles bit only onecof them if from thr premier league era. PL started in 1992, but that was just a rebrand, beforec thstvit was simpley cslled devision one. Which we won 18 times.
We wouls like to win one more league title as man inited hold 20 leage titles. To our 19!
We also have 6 FA cups, and 9 league cup wins, and 6 eiropean cup wins.
There are two lesser european cups too, thst also run concurrent, there is a few ways you qualify for them, winning thr FA and or finishing 5th in the premier leage table. My team have won the UEFA cup 3 times and super cup 4 times. The names of these cups keep changing .(a bit like devison one ro premier league).
Pluse at the end of the season there is a a short torniment where the best or world the teams thst wone each continesnts version of trh champions league (sort of) and we have won thst once. That the world club cup.
I hope that outlines better how all the cups and leage all run together, bit have no baringvon one another.
If you noticed, to win the champions League, its a two year process, first you have to have a good year and finish in the top 4 of the premier leage, then the next season your entered into thr champions leage. So to win it you have to be on form for a good cuple of years.
Other contries have diffeting domestic set ups and way to decide jow you wualify for each european compitition. Thr onlybrulecis you jsve to be a european team registered inder UEFA. (Europes governing body.
Ameicas is calles somethig very crap.

One point about the cup competitions. You can get a team from a few tiers down playing a big club (in England, especially in the FA Cup third round, when the clubs from the top two tiers enter the competition). If the lower division club wins they are known as "giant killers", because they have eliminated a top club from the competition. Lower division teams can make a lot of money if they have a successful cup run against higher division opponents.

There is also a friendly game. Games that take place outside of the regular league and outside of the competition. Two clubs agree to play a game together. These can be clubs in different leagues or from different countries. All that matters is the one game and the comparison of performance. For a weaker club it can be a success to achieve a tie. Or to defeat the supposedly stronger opponent with one goal.

Most countries have a "pyramid" league system now. As an example in England - top tier is the English Premier League; 2nd tier EFL championship; 3rd tier EFL League One, 4th tier EFL League Two; 5th tier National League. These 5 tiers all cover the whole of England. Leagues below these are increasingly regionalised as teams become smaller and more local. There are two 6th tier Leagues - the National League North and the National League South. There are four 7th tier Leagues. I won't go into the names, but they are roughly North/Midlands/South East/South West. At tier 8 there are 8 leagues and at tier 9 there are 16 leagues. It goes on beyond that, too!
For the main Cup competition in England (the FA Cup - 150 years old), only clubs from the top 9 tiers (plus a very few highest ranked teams from tier 10) get to enter. However, the clubs from the highest tiers get "byes" to the later rounds of the tournament. The Final is actually the Eighth Round of the cup, although it is never called that. The Quarter-Finals are the Sixth round (names are interchangeable), and these are the last 8 teams standing. Before that the Fifth Round has 16 teams plating, the Fourth Round is the last 32 teams and the Third Round is the last 64 teams. THIS IS THE ROUND WHERE THE BIGGEST CLUBS ENTER. The 44 teams from the Premiership and the Championship enter at this stage, plus 20 teams who won thru in the Second Round. Thus their are 40 teams in the Second Round and 80 teams in the First Round. In the First round the 48 teams from tier 3 and 4 enter the competition along with 32 winners from the "qualifying rounds". There are 6 qualifying rounds, confusingly named 4th, 3rd, 2nd, 1st, Preliminary and Extra Preliminary!!! Similarly, where a club enters for the first time depends upon which tier they are at in the Pyramid. So tier 5 enter at the 4th qualifying round, tier 6 enter at the 2nd qualifying round, tier 7 enter at the 1st qualifying round and tiers 8-10 enter at either the Preliminary Round or Extra Preliminary Round. Tiers 9 and 10 always at the Extra Preliminary Round. This year there were 732 entries in total. Almost every town of any size will have a team and some tiny villages! In theory ANY team can win the cup! There have been some major upsets in the past (and each year brings the possibility of a "Giant Killing". For example in the 2016-17 season one team from the Fifth Tier (Lincoln City) went all the way to the Quarter Finals. They started at the 4th qualifying round stage and they beat Guiseley (also tier 5). In the First round "Proper" they beat Altrincham (of tier 6); in the Second Round they beat Oldham Athletic (of tier 3); in the Third Round they beat Ipswich Town (of tier 2); in the Fourth Round they beat Brighton & Hove Albion (of tier 2) and in the Fifth Round they knocked out Burnley of tier 1 (the Premier League). Lincoln City had last reached this stage (the last 16 teams) well over a century earlier. Their run came to an end in the Quarter Finals where they lost to Arsenal.
Usually teams from the top tier win the Cup, but there have been instances where second tier teams have won. The last team to reach the final from outside the top tier was Cardiff City in 2007-08, and the last team to WIN from outside the top tier was West Ham United, who beat Arsenal 1-0 in the 1979-80 Cup Final.
Long-winded, but I hope you understand!!!

The qualifying process for the champions league is based on Performance. It depends on how good a country's teams are in the european cups, every win and every draw they do in this cup is calculated in something that's called 5-years-ranking (yes the Performance of your countries teams of the last 5 years). The top 4 countries in this ranking for example send their league champion and the places 2-4 of the last league season in the champions league. 5 and 6 plus the cup winner then might play in the europa league (the smaller european cup) and 7 goes in the conference league (the smallest european cup). The higher you are in this ranking, the more teams of your country league qualify for the european cups.
It is a very complicated System and it creates the Situation that many smaller countries that go higher in this ranking might go down in the next years if they only got 1 or 2 clubs that are competitive on this level.

Well, the "normal" leagues are the "standard" games most people look at. In Germany you have a national A-League with the best teams (called Bundesliga lit. federation league), then the second B-League (2. Bundesliga) and further down regional leagues C,D,E.. down to little towns competing. Those teams can't afford traveling much, so the leagues further down are really regional and 99% of all soccer clubs are kinda participating there, in bigger cities often several teams from the same city. So Bayern München (the well known Munich soccer team) is "just" one (albeit the biggest) soccer club in Munich and its suburbs, there may be 50 or more around Munich playing in all leagues. In Germany: 1. Bundesliga > 2. Bundesliga > 3. Bundesliga > 5x Regionalliga North/East... > 12x Oberliga of 12 regions > 38x Landesliga/Verbandsliga > 91x Bezirksliga > another layer of basic leagues in all the regions. So there are more than 8 layers or levels or divisions in Germany...
The national cups (in Germany the DFB-Pokal - German Football Association-Cup) are more a less a fun thing in most countries, where some small teams (by draw, a bit like a lottery, the teams are from 1. to 3. Bundesliga) can fight the biggest teams. A normal game in soccer might end 2:3 (scores) or 1:0 or 4:2, but those games might end 0:15 or even worse, but hey, it was fun to play against a team 2 leagues up. And almost every year a small David from the 3. league kicks out a big Goliath...
Both systems are more or less common in most countries, so the best teams (of the national leagues) also fight each other internationally (others can't afford this anyway) and also the cup winners fight each others. Money is a thing.. ^^

In the end the league is more prestigeaus than the cup. Winning the league means you are the best team of the year. During a long season things like luck are not a big factor. But the cup matches are more emotional. Every match means do or die. Big underdog stories are born here and one single match can be magical. In the league one single match is not so important. At the end it's only 3 points.

  • @wasen_aeon

Winning the league is always a bigger priority than winning the cups (Unless it's about Champions League which means a lot of $$$ if you do well). Depending on your position in the league at the end of the season, that's what decides what teams are qualified to the Champions League.
However, in many countries, the winner of the country's own cup is also rewarded a European spot (Maybe not Champions League, but Europa League or Europa Conference League possibly) and that's also another shot for the club to be successful and get some money to the club. It's also the charm there that it might not even be a team in the first division that wins that spot (although that is pretty rarely it doesn't happen).
Depending on the coeffiency ranking on the leagues (How well the teams from the league have done the last 5 years) it decides on how many European slots each league the teams are fighting for. A league like the Premier League have 4 teams in the Champions League compared to like the Swedish Allsvenskan league who only have one team who have to fight through several qualifying rounds to get to Champions League at all.

Speaking from a Portuguese perspective here, regarding the importance of each competition:
Yes, the Champions League is the most important club competition in Europe, but it is worth mentioning that only a small fraction of teams are even qualified to play, and even less have significant possibilities of winning it. So, realistically speaking, the national league is the most important competition for most European teams, I would say. Besides that, the league is the competition which decides the most consistent team of the season (which in Europe is viewed as a very important factor) - as opposed to the cup's, that have an elimination format (similar to your playoff's), in which the winner does not necessarily need to be consistent. On the plus side, the cups can sometimes provide some surprises, like lesser known teams defeating the favorites...
So, to sum it up, I think even though no one ignores or looks down on any competition, the order would be something like:
    - Champions league (only for some teams)
    - National league
    - Cup

TBH the Cup is more valuable for individual players that get to showcase their quality even if they play for a lower division. For the teams it's more about prestige.

  • @seanmcmichael2551
    @seanmcmichael2551 9 місяців тому

In terms of current prestige ranking, fans would want their team to win Champions League, then their domestic League, then their domestic Cup. Some subtlety to that, depending on your team's past glories (or famines) and club rivalries.
A Part 2 of that vid could go on to show how a club (and the representation of a country by successful clubs) may/may not qualify directly for Champions League.
Relegation is a big deal for ALL teams. In English League for instance, a relegation candidate can often upset supposedly mightier teams due to giving 120% effort instead of usual 110% !

To answer your question: Winning the League is definitely more "important" and prestigious. The Cup however still gives a chance of a National title both for big clubs who want to rack up throphies or for smaller clubs who might otherwise never have a chance at winning a throphy otherwise.

  • @meganoob12

The league is more important, more prestigous and more rewarding rgarding financials than the cup. Winning the league is way harder than winning a cup. In the cup every match is an elimination match. A couple of lucky days are enough to win you the cup, but in the league you have to play way more consistantly on a high level because instead of winning like 6, 7 or 8 matches, you have to win the majority of 34 or 38 (depending on the country the size of the league differs) matches.
Also the league, cup and chanpions league are seperate competitions and have no influence on oneanother. The only link that exists is that you qualify for the champions league by doing well in your national league.

The most important tournament is each country's national league. The higher up the league table a team gets, the more opportunities and revenue it receives. Those teams which finish in the top 4 of the league table get to compete in the European Champion's League, which is the second most important tournament. As it provides by far the most revenue, depending on how well the team does. The least important tournament is each country's national playoffs tournament, Most countries have 2 separate playoffs tournaments. The absolute optimal achievement a team aims for is to win every single tournament in the season. The League Cup, European Champions Cup, and one or both Play-Offs Cups. Known as achieving either the Trebble or the Quadruple.

Winning the league is a bigger deal than the cup as it decides who is the best team in the country and is played through the whole season. The Cup is a completely separate tournament that still has prestige though and especially for teams who have no chance of winning the league a chance at winning a trophy.
The cup is a knockout tournament where all team from all divisions are put in to a hat and teams are drawn against each other. So you could end up with a small team being drawn against one the top teams which usually means a big pay day and chance to cause an upset. The winner of each tie progresses in to the next round until we are left with 2 teams to contest the final.

Which is more important to win? Depends on your team, your financial situation, the division your are in. For the really BIG clubs, those spends hundreds of millions a years, it’s the champions league. The there country‘s league and then the cup. For them, the target is all three. But if you are a mid of the pack in the first division, and cannot afford to spend as much, then it maybe one of those. So you focus on having your best players fit for those matches.

The League and Cup competitions are entirely separate. Usually the League competition is considered most important, but winning the Cup has bragging rights. In England the FA Cup has been competed for every year (except in wartime) since the 1871-72 season; currently around 700 teams enter the competition every year, though most of them have been weeded out by the time the top 2 divisions’ teams enter at the beginning of January. In 2013 Wigan Athletic won the FA Cup, and were relegated from the Premier League three days later as they’d had a poor league season (they’ve been relegated again since, and are currently playing in the 3rd tier, League One). In the 1990-91 season, Wrexham finished bottom of the 4th tier, in 92nd place, while Arsenal won the First Division; the next year the two teams were drawn against each other in the FA Cup Third Round, and Wrexham won 2-1 - this is what’s called a giantkilling act!

We do not have a draft, players here will sign at an academy, which is essentially a youth team ran by the bigger clubs. The whole idea of playing sports for a high school team and then getting a college scholarship and then getting drafted is an American invention, most likely done to increase the brand recognition of colleges and make people want to go to them more. The concept of being a rookie doesn't exist, since most players will play at a professional level at as young as 16, maybe in a weaker league before then getting bought by a team from Europe or England. trades dont really happen that much, players are just bought and sold.

  • @Abbadonhades
    @Abbadonhades 9 місяців тому

First off, the national cups are completely separate from the leagues, and doesn't influence the league in any way.
Talking about prestige and monetary value:
The Uefa Champions league is the most prestigious club tournament to win. Depending on your budget, it can also be the most valuable to win in terms of income. Next comes the top national league in terms of money and prestige. It is also the only way to qualify for the Champions league. If you're from a smaller nation, with a relatively small budget, the tv rights and sponsorship deals from the Champions league can raise your club up a lot. That's even before you talk about the valuable experience of your clubs players gaining experience from playing against the best clubs in the world.
The national cups are a secondary priority for the top clubs, but have their own charm, since lower league teams can compete and knock out the bigger teams. And make no mistake, for mid-tier teams in the top division as well as lower level teams the cup is important, both in terms of prestige and money. It's an alternative avenue to winning a competition that year. And through the cup you qualify for playing in a european cup competition.
Depending on the standing of your top national league (based on how well teams have performed in European cups over a period of time), teams from your nation can enter one of 3 european cup competitions. The best one is the Champions league, the secondary level cup is the Europa league, and the third level cup is the Conference league.
All teams in Europe that win their top national league can compete to qualify for the Champions league. In many nations that means that only one club can participate in the Champions league qualification. But some nations like England, Spain, Germany, Italy and France have done so well in european club competitions over time, that they've gotten certain privileges. In England for example, the top clubs that realize they can't win the league this season, has another secondary target, which is to be among the top 4 teams in the league. That is because in England the next three places below the champions are secured a chance to qualify for the champions league.
Those clubs that place directly below the top four in England qualify for playing in the Europa league or the Conference league. I'll illustrate this difference in standing between national leagues by using my home country Norway. Here only the league winners can fight to qualify for the champions league. While number 2 and 3, as well as the national cup winners, automatically qualify for competing in the third-level european cup: The conference league.

  • @DaxRaider

Champions League has spots for each nation based on how well the nation did the last 5-10 years.
It's top4 of Germany England Spain. Then 3 or 2 from Netherland France Portugal smaller leagues have only 1 slot and the smallest leagues only get a qualification slot where Tues need to win several games in qualifiying matches vs each other to qualify at all.

  • @andreiferariu
    @andreiferariu 8 місяців тому

The complicated system he's referring to is that every league from every country has a number of Champions League spots, some being automatically in the group stages and others having to battle other teams from other countries to qualify for a Champions League group.
For example: the Premier League (the top league in England) has 4 Champions League spots which are given out to the teams which finish top 4 in the league. While a team from a country like Malta has a much much harder time reaching the group stages, having to battle many other teams for the privilege.
Usually tho, the Champions League will have teams from England, one from Scotland, a couple from France, Spain, Germany and Italy, at most 2 from Portugal, and in the past one or two from Russia, and one or two from Ukraine - other than that the rest of the teams were insignificant and just cannon fodder, usually coming from Belgium, Serbia, Hungary and so on.

Winning the league tends to be more important, but the top teams try to win more than one trophy each season. It's a way to show the team is really good. Since the league and the cups are played at the same time, teams that don't have a deep roster tent to concentrate on just one so their stars don't get exhausted.
I think in Spain barça has the record for most trophies in a year, 6. It was the Spanish league, some local cups, the champions league and some other international cups. Real Madrid's record is 5, they lost la copa del rey (the king's cup) that year

On the Champions League qualifications: It used to be that every country sent their literal champion, i.e. the league winner. However, since the league quality is very different, today the qualifications differ depending on where you play. For example, the English Premier League has a very high quality, so all teams who finish top 4 are automatically selected for next year's Champions League. The Swedish Allsvenskan is a much worse league (ranked 23rd in Europe), and therefore the Allsvenskan champion has to play at least 3 qualification games just to make it into the tournament (they will play against other teams from lower-ranked leagues). This year, the national breakdown of the CL looks like this:
5 Spanish teams, 4 English teams, 4 German teams, 4 Italian teams, 3 Portuguese teams, 2 French teams, 2 Dutch teams, and 1 team each from Turkey, Austria, Denmark, Scotland, Serbia, Switzerland, Ukraine, and Belgium.

Relegation is such a fundamental thing here that I was surprised to learn US leagues don’t do it. Crazy stuff. Your leagues are just stagnant. Sure, money means certain big teams are very unlikely to be relegated, but it does happen to some previously big teams that are now in lower divisions.

Hi, the cup matches are much less valued at top level than they used to be, but the fans still love them, particularly at the smaller c!ubs. A couple of years ago Tottenham Hotspur found themselves playing a 9th tier team (Marine) placing well over three hundred teams between them in the league system. It is dreams like that that lead supporters like me to shout ourselves horse at extra preliminary round matches in early August !
Also, relegation and promotion is the absolute life blood of football. A well run club can aspire to great things. Fleetwood for instance rising from 9th tier to the third tier, A reformed Accrington going from local leagues (the equivalent of 12th tier) up to 3rd tier.
Relegation sucks, of course, but it can give your club a chance to re-build, to start winning again, to develop new players with less expectation and pressure. And games matter right to the end of the season.
The result, local league game attract hundreds, or even thousands of spectators - because everything matters.

The league is more important because it's more competitive & harder to win, but you can win the cup tournament with shithousery. The cup winner & the top 3 teams in the league get a ChampionsLeague ticket(Number 4), which winning that is a huge deal all over Europe.

When he says "complex and drawn out process" he really means it... Its kind of similar to the FA cup in England too.... The Intention is, everybody gets a chance to get into it, but a small club would have to start a qualification process of playing other small teams well in advance. In England, the FA defines the top 10 levels of football (1857 clubs) so these get a chance in the FA cup qualifiers. But following the path of the leagues that relelgate and promote into each other, there are another 10 levels of leagues after that (another 4730 clubs). (I.e. 20 levels of leagues)... The teams at the bottom of that system are literally normal guys playing on the weekend. If they got promoted, they could literally end up playing pro players. (BTW the system becomes more localised the further down you go, so it starts being just your county, but still 20ish teams in each county).... In terms of Champions league in Europe they also have a points system for leagues performance, which decides how much qualifying your teams have to do.

When a team goes bust, ie they run out of money and cant afford their stadium/player wages, they essentially no longer exist and get kicked out of not just their own league but the whole pyramid. This would be the end of the team in any other sport but in football fans care about their clubs too much to let them get forgotten just for losing too much money, so the fans will often come together to revive the club and they will start again at a lower tier and work their way back up, this has happened to some pretty big teams in Italy and once in Scotland as well as to smaller teams in England. American fans will just move on with their life if their local minor league team disappears, we dont.

There are no Soccer Leagues in Europe. They are Football Leagues. There are two Cup competition in England, the FA (Football Association) Cup which any team in England that is affiliated to the FA can enter and the League Cup (Called the Carabao Cup) which is only open to the League teams. I should point out that in the FA Cup final if the scores are level after 90 minutes there is Extra Time of 15 minutes each way and if still level a penalty shoot out. It varies in each Country depending on previous record in the competition but in England the top 4 teams in the previous years Premier League are nominated into the Champions League. This can vary across Europe from 1 to 4 teams from the respective Leagues. Main point you should get is Football Teams are not Franchises like American Football Teams and therefor don't have their place in the League ensured every season. All though this is a generalisation I would say in order the Top Teams would regard The Champions League as the top competition to win, then their domestic Premier League title, then the FA Cup and finally the Carabao Cup. The top team in England in 2023, was Manchester City who won the Treble of Champions League, Premier League and FA cup.

Ther league & cups are different competitions - you should consider each in isolation. The League is the most prestigious domestic competition - the old saying is league positions don't lie - to win you must be the best team for the full season. The cup competitions are straightforward knock outs - there are two of these in England - one reserved for the teams that play in the top for leagues (the League cup) - this is the least prestigious of the two. The other is the FA Cup and is open to all clubs in the country - there are about 5-6 rounds of games (known as the preliminary rounds) where the amateur and semi pro clubs play. The first round is where the clubs in the 3rd & 4th tier join in, and when you get to the 3rd round all the top clubs join in. It is still very prestigious to win the FA Cup, but winning the league is far more important (and valuable). The top 4 teams in the English premier league get entry to the Champions league the following season - the next 3 get entered into the Europa League - not nearly as valuable or prestigious as the Champions League, but still a very important competition. An interesting point is the play off game to get promoted to the Premier League (for the best 2 teams that win through the Championship play offs in the second tier) - this single game 90 minute game is supposed to be the most valuable game in world sport with the winner getting in excess of £100m in income the following season, the loser getting nothing.

Winning the League is very important for the teams in the league, But as also one of the fifth league could win the cup is of course more important for the fifth or second league team.
And you have the option to play international (UEFA Europa League), even if you are in second, thrid, ... league but won the national cup.
If you are realy good, you may win the local league, the national cup and the champions or Europa League, waht would be a "Triple".
In Chamions League play the best teams of each country of the first division. Depending on size of the country and the quality of football, there are more teams of the countries first division.
So more teams from England or France, but less from Luxemburg or Switzerland.
