  • Coronary stents have saved and improved the lives of millions of people. Nebraska Medical Center cardiologist Dr. Haysam Akkad explains how a stent is place inside a blocked artery and what a patient is likely to feel after the procedure is finished. Doctors place the stent by threading a wire through an artery in the leg until the stent is at the point where the artery blocked or narrowed. A tiny balloon inside the stent then inflates. The stent, a tiny wire mesh tube the holds the artery open, allowing increased blood flow.

I had two stents fitted in my heart, One in my left artery and one in my right artery, The difference is amazing, I cycle seven miles everyday on my mountain bike up the hills and go running on the tread mill three times a week, My arteries had narrowing due to plaque build up but having the stents fitted as transformed my life, I have changed my diet to a healthy one and had the one hour procedure in hospital while i was awake, I must stress i did not have a heart attack but was getting discomfort in my arms and across my chest if i did anything physical, Kind of a dull pain which went away when i rested, The Cardiologists saved and transformed my life, I cannot thank them enough and i am very very grateful.

Very good explanation. I also had a stent placed last year. My stent was placed in a section with branch and some blood flows across the stent wall (not from one end to another) to the branch. I wonder if it is a normal practice to do this way because if the junction is clogged (the stent wall is "sealed:"), there seems nothing that can be done in future (you can't cut a hole on the stent).

I got two yesterday 2/26/20. I had bypass surgery on 5 arteries in 1993. I’ve had chest pain for months so my doctor decided to order a cardiac Cath. They found 2 arteries 95% blocked. You are sedated but awake during the 90 minute procedure. There was a fair amount of discomfort but not pain. Just knowing what was going on was weird. I had the Cath inserted through the wrist artery. All pain is gone
    . I feel great.

No, they are expanded to fit snugly into the artery and some tissue grows over them so they become part of the artery. Modern ones are "drug-eluting" meaning they are coated with something to prevent plaque forming over them.
