ABOUT VANITY FAIR
Arts and entertainment, business and media, politics, and world affairs-Vanity Fair’s features and exclusive videos capture the people, places, and ideas that define modern culture.
you know, most people would play just gollum and then call it a day and get back to the "proper acting". Andy Serkis ran with it, essentially typecast himself and turned it into a new art form, and now he's the industry-recognised expert in a huge area of modern film making. Legend.
makes sense, he found a niche and exploited it. Logical desition. 5/10 people would do
I agree but he's also a great 'in person' actor as well. He was the best thing in age of Ultron and black panther and killed off far too early in that last film imo.
Right! He even made his own specialized production house.
Typecasting sheesh
Miles Campbell He was really good in The Prestige too. Wish he'd get a lead role that wasn't motion captured, but perhaps he prefers it this way.
I am still amazed how he played gollum and now ended up being a director for movies
How is that amazing? An actor becomes a director?
thetasteoflimes that he wasn't typecast as just a weirdo with a gimmick. He pioneered a new fom of acting and the industry recognized it
@@thetasteoflimes A motion capture artist becomes a director. You're missing the point, he's famous even though his face has barely ever been the one on screen. Theoretically you could replace him with any other actor, it's not his face that is famous. Yet he has worked with some of the best directors in the world & got funding to direct a movie with A list actors with a face that most "man in the street" movie viewers wouldn't beable to place or name.
Kiki Purchases life bro life...
Many actors go on to become directors, but Andy isn't just an actor - he's a well respected pioneer of this art which is why A-listers were attracted to working with him. Bale said this in an interview.
Andy has made a successful career by first playing the most convincing motion capture character of all time and then using his first-hand knowledge to develop things further. Hats off to this man.
The first thing I remember him in was in 1989, why does everyone think he started as golem?
Planet of the apes trilogy being one of the best
Still amazes me to this day that the Academy does not recognise Motion Capture as "Real Acting". Andy Serkis, Hats off to you Sir!
because it's not real acting, it's reference material brought to life by animators and vfx artists. It should be recognised though, just not as an actors only award.
@@person8203 it is acting though. You're communicating emotions, dialogue and movements the same way a normal actor would. The only difference is that it isn't his/ her face up on the screen. They are the character the same way Benedict Cumberbatch was smaug. The same way Christan bail was Mowgli.
@@Excalibur-je5pk not in the complete sense, the voice acting is the actors performance. Motion capture isn't transferred 1:1, how could it be. A human can't pretend to be a dragon or panther or whatever in any way. Look at Bradley Cooper as rocket, he did a great voice job but it was largely recorded without any motion capture rig. And he readily admits he's part of a team effort.
Humanoid faces are better for capture, hence the animals in Mowgli having those odd human like faces. However there's still a lot of interpretation by animators and artists to bring the characters to life. It's good pr having big name actors as the voices and recording them with capture rigs, etc. You only have to look at side-by-side's of capture vs finished footage to see the actors performance is reference. That's why a character award that recognises all involved would be better than one for capture acting alone.
Andy Serkis deserves his own Oscsr
Thats implying oscars are actually given to anyone above 6/10 acting skill
who would have thought Batman would one day become the Black Panther
Nguyen Quoc Bao Khang underrated comment
To the top
You deserve more likes
Wow, 413 likes? I did not expect that!
And who would’ve thought Andy Serkis would share scenes with two Black Panthers
This is why Andy's the king of the motion capture. Or how Christian Bale called him, the Master of motion Capture. Definitely one of the best actor of this generation.
When you say motion capture, Andy Serkis is the man.
Orange When you say actor. Andy Serkis is the man.
When you say motion capture, VFX artists make Andy Serkis the man he pretends to be.
Andy serkis is the actor, a small army of people are the man of motion capture.
I had no idea Serkis was behind this movie! Now ima go watch it! Love ho well he explained everything, he’s become an expert in performance capture!
Yes , he does and excellent job, he´s amazing. But , the movie it´s lame
He is THE expert
Same I never expect that he directed the film also though the movie is not good but the old one made in 1960 something the second animation movie of jungle book 2 and the 2016 reboot live action film is way better
It’s pretty good for the first half
@@supersebas100 Well your wrong
I can't understand why this movie got such bad reviews. I liked it a lot! Disney's adaptation is cute and enjoyable, but this one actually feels like a powerful story with strong characters. Bagheera, Baloo, Sher Khan and Mowgli, all in this movie leave a strong emotional impression.
It's too real for a young audience to handle. Great film.
I can see some people giving the movie a bad review because of Bhoot XD
Just a bunch of morons who don't know literary history and have poor taste in art and film
Disney sabotaged Serkis movie
Disney is so lame anymore. This movie proved that to me. Andy beat Dis at their own game.
I could listen to Andy talk about performance capture all day long, he's so passionate and eloquent with his delivery. Such a charismatic and endearing individual.
I love hearing him talk about his thought process
his drawing and marking on the pictures are satisfying XD
It makes me mad how underrated this guy is. His talent especially his acting performances are so amazing and underappreciated. He deserves more recognition
Y mad bro
He is not underrated. In fact, he is known as "The King of Motion Capture Acting".
This is a really impressive notes on. Perhaps my favorite. Serkis is a true legend.
they should’ve done this for Lion King🤦♂️
Totally true. Those faces are beyond expressionless and without any substance
If you're referring to performance capture, I quite agree with you, Mr. Daniel.
They are indeed. Motion capture could've and would've prevented that.
It has not facial expression because they wanted to make a real life version, yes Ik it’s CGI. You know what I mean.
They went to 'Groot' and 'Baby Yoda' direction
Andy is such a legend tbh, about time he's on this thanks u guys
This became a Netflix movie tho. Oof.
@@moist_captain still a good movie though, Netflix have been trying to get some good talent on their side recently.
@@moist_captain you mean the same Netflix that are known to make the best content out there and completely changing how we consume content? Oh ye oof Netflix has changed standards... They hire extremely talented actors you would never think would be on Netflix, they aren't just a small platform anymore.
Christian Bale is one of the best actors of all time
Ꭲ Ꮋ Ꮎ Ꭱ except he isn’t
Brian Botello He objectively is
His acting as a child was even great
Brian Botello do you want him to trash your f****ng lights?

"Performance Capture." As opposed to motion capture? Man, whatever we need to call it to get this man his lead actor Oscar in something.
Tevin Green motion capture defined when they would record movements and then have to go back and record audio and close ups. As the tech evolved, it became performance capture where everything could be recorded in take- the face, the body and the audio
Thing is as much as he tries to convince people an actors performance is simply transferred on to an animation the reality is that the performance is for reference. Don't get me wrong, it's great reference material, however there's still a gap between performance and the animators skill in bringing it to life. An oscar for an actor would be a slap in the face to the animators and vfx artists.
@@person8203 Quite on the contrary, I would bet that the animators and VFX artists would take great pride in their contributing to an actor's Oscar-winning performance
@@person8203 If you look at the new God of War, Christopher Judge who played Kratos used performance capture to show the pain and torment that words alone could not capture. On top of that, animated faces based on models like the previous God of Wars and really any other video game prior to 2012 can't show the emotions we can empathize with. Judge can earn an award for acting and the animators can win an award too
I think Andy is one of the greatest under appreciated actors ever. His skill and passion for these types of roles is truly amazing
I actually like this film better than the Disney made version. It was a lot darker, but had a better overall tone. Now that he explains the reasoning for it, makes it even better.
Anirudh Kumar I see your point but you know that Disney will makes something dark light hearted, that’s what they do
More true to the book
when you think about the animated movies when they have talking animals they essentially do the same thing. Real animals don't express like that, Simba if he was a real cub would not look that sad or happy in real life. So animation has been making more humanistic animals since the very beginning but this is the first time it has been done with more real looking bodies to go along with it so it feels weird at first but it is actually just more of the same just brought to another level.
@@trevonm.s9151 except for the hunchback of notre dame. That movie was basically the book but with songs.
yeah the disney was like kid and they didn't had tabaci and in the disney they showed sher khan very strongeer he comes and attack all the wolf like they are nothin but in this they showed real sher khan whi was coward when wolf united he left
That's Christian Bale?? Wow what a transformation he did for this role, I couldn't even recognize him.
you can really tell how excited he is about having made this movie. this was a passion project for sure
Say what you want about the movie, but Andy Serkis really knows how to bring cg characters to life. Whether if he's doing the performance or just directing the performance. Cast did great on this.
I really liked this version I dont understand the mixed reviews.
CGI was more cartoonier but the story was darker and more faithful to the actual book.
was it?
It's hardly about Christian Bale
lenircotia that’s very true but i had no idea christian bale was in this movie
the panther is bale
Lord of the rings, planet of the apes, avengers and now directing Christian Bale, cate Blanchette and Cumberbatch A-list Hollywood actors! What a legend mr serkis
It's a shame that it got put to Netflix and not release in cinema
I liked this movie more than the Disney version
I haven't watch it yet, but I'm already in love with this movie. just look at this man...his passion about making, about actors who he was worked with and so. fascinating, deserves a lot of respect
Having a director that is an insanely professional actor on set is just pure gold. He sees things that most people won't notice.
I get why Serkis took some liberty with the animals in this movie. He's right about it. Disney's CGI is top notch, the animals look physically present. It's when they start talking that you notice something off.
I'd say this movie does a better job when it comes to giving the animals a personality. With so much talent involved, it couldn't be any other way. Overall, the Disney version still looks slightly better and brighter. But that's mainly because it's for a younger audience and has, probably, a bigger budget.
Strictly speaking, making the animals look more human can be said to be in line with Kipling's message, as the animals within the Jungle Book stories were meant to embody different types of humans...
Autistic
Lion king 2019 should have implemented this technology in their movie
Amen to you, sir! Disney should've implemented performance capture into their remake of The Jungle Book, also.
I would watch the entire production process of this film. It’s so incredible and techinical and well-done.
Anja Hani sammmme
It's better than the Mowgli movie it's really cool love the direction the movie was heading
I’m still incredibly depressed about losing bhoot. 😭 rip little guy
Just Chilin Well I still havent seen the movie but if I ever do I’ll know bhoot dies 😏
I felt like bhoot looking like that kinda wanted to die he was ew
Sharkdude show how dare you flipping say that sir! Bhoot was a sweet and innocent soul he deserved better. that was the only part of the movie I disliked
@@Jo-chilin he looked terrible and was annoying but I got major chills when it showed his head that was really handled really well
Just Chilin Me too. I thought i was the only one who keeps thinking about that after watching the movie.
The 58 people who disliked this dont know how hard andy works and how much respect and credit he deserves.
Christian Bale really is a superb actor, whether it's motion-capture or live-action.
Him speaking about it makes me want to watch it. He sells it really well. Also got to love those subtle jabs at Disney.
I really like this version of Jungle Book and thought Andy Serkis did a fantastic job. There was a clear message in the movie and all the performances were great. I encourage everyone to see it on Netflix.
I had no idea that this man was a filmmaker alongside being an actor. I recently seen him in Black Panther and thought his performance was pretty solid, not realizing he also played Gollum and Cesear in other films I've seen in the past. Kinda amazing
Better than all other versions, because it's real and true to the book unlike the other Disney cutise adaptations
Disney just ruins everything. Disney Jungle Book is so Cringy.
Aurang you guys are talking about the cgi films right? I really like the original jungle book animated film. That’s what I think of. The book was fun to flip through when I was a kid
@@TShorty929 They're talking about both Disney adaptations
Dimitri Wega thx for clarifying
Disney had amazing songs that is why I think their better but that's how the mafia works
Not sure why this movie got bad reviews. I thought it was really good like how it was more real and gritty.
Much better than Disneys trash. Baby sing along trash.
Gage Sanders ikr unfortunately the 60s animated film has become to iconic for its own good
It's because they thought they were watching the pg version xD
I thought it was great as well.
never seen or cared about any other jungle books, but somehow this 10 minute video has gotten me insanely excited to see it. never thought andy would come this far to become the king of mocap after seeing his character in my favorite movie ever, the prestige
So glad Andy got the chance to make this movie, he seems like such a genuine guy
I have to say, before seeing this I just thought the animals looked strange, but it kinda makes sense now
So Andy Serkis is a director now. Couldn't be happier. He is immensely talented as an actor and, apparently as a director too.
Lmao, Baloo was a jolly character in the animated version. In this version he's like this retired military commander. But it's all good because its Andy Serkis
My favorite thing about Mr. Serkis is how much he obviously loves what he does.
Watching him explain things really shows how much of an artist's eye he has for everything! It's really fascinating to watch and I love it! I've always really liked what he brings to everything he does but this just emphasized why, he's so good at what he does!
" He's only chasing me, he targeted me, he knows I am the weakest"
*"Oh gooOOOod for yooOOOOu!"*
I was so glad he went for a more humanized look for the animals. That actually makes them look and read like characters, which is part of what I don't like with this new photo real Lion King adaptation. I feel a lot of the characterization gets lost on translation to photo real.
Amen to that!
When he said " I didn't want to use documentary style photo-real animals" I immediately thought of the lion king. John Favreau could have used the same technique and mentality.
Given the small production budget this film was surprisingly well made. There were parts of it that were better than the 2016 film.
I'm glad that he actually took his time to give some insights on how certain shots were developed . Thanks!
It's such a great film, and what he say about his decision about the more human looking animals makes total sense. Too bad it's gotten criticism for stupid reasons, it's a lot closer to the source material than Disney and that is a good thing, it's not meant to be a children's film.
title's a little weird, i think he mentioned christian bale once lol
Taylor Miller bale played the panther
Right lol
@@TheExecutioner21 yeah, and he spends the entire video talking mostly about baloo and mowgli and the characters in general. He casually mentions bale once, seems like the title could be much more accurate as "Andy Serkis discusses the motion capture animals" or somethin
Me 2
🚨Breaking News🚨 Andy Serkis will be direct to Venom 2 in Sony's Marvel Universe
Might be the rescuer of that trilogy
I love how at 3:14 when he’s explaining how he uses ADR to hold proper sight lines, you can see him slip into Baloo for a split second and it’s just so second nature for him. Andy Serkis is an absolute genius!
Awesome job in explaining how you shot this amazing film....dope stuff Andy Serkis...awesome job indeed I enjoyed the movie.
One of my favourite actors. Such a genuine guy
Holla if you just wanted to see Christian Bale in Mo-Cap!
This was supposed to come out of cinemas years ago but Disney released their version and its a massive hit. So this film didn't get released at the planned date. It was abandoned and got picked up by Netflix.
wow I could listen to him talk for hours, this is so fascinating
We need more videos explaining the technical marvels behind the scenes like this.
I quite enjoyed this version. I had no idea Andy had directed it. Incredible!
This man pioneered a whole new branch of film making! I am still amazad at all his preformances, especially Gollum/Smeagol. Absolutely love this man!
This is way over explained. This is a piece of art.
It's entirely art.
It's entirely a unison creation over a period of three to four years created between artisans - that's all that really needs to be said. Well done.
Bagheera in this is film is so good, you love him all your soul. All thanks to Christian Bale and the incredible motion capture
This adaptation confused me, there was a lot going on, and I didn’t get the significance of it a lot of the scenes given there was a lot of emotional attachment to it. The death of the Albino Wolf was heartbreaking, but I think it needed some closure afterwards.
I liked parts of it, I thought the young actor who played Mowgli was fantastic.
Staying true to the emotions in the story inspite of all these technical challenges, thats the real achievement here
Who else thought this movie was great??!!
Great? No... Good? Yes, but that's my opinion.
That’s cool I respect you’re opinion!
Me
I did aswell.
I liked it more than Disneys The Jungle Book
What a genius, please make more movies Andy Serkis
This is the best Jungle Book based movie, by far.
Christian Bale’s performance is fantastic.
Excellent movie.
I love Andy Serkis. His amazing performance in Black Panther is terribly underrated.
Just saying but Christian Bale is still my Batman.
PSX 1080 Kevin Conroy is the voice I hear (unless it’s a campy Golden Age or Silver Age comic where I would hear Adam West) , but Bale was the best live action Batman and one of the greatest actors of all time.
Greg Sestero is the best Batman
The 80's Wolf lmaoooo
Christian Bale is my Bateman! 😤😤😤
Dark Knight one of the best superhero if not the best ever made. Bale is my Batman forever for irl movies
So much passive low key shade at Disney’s Jungle book ......
I love it
Wow. Can't imagine it otherwise now >_
There's a still shown in this video where Andy looks way younger than 4 years before. How long have been these guys working on this movie..??
I noticed that too. lol the stress of directing a movie seems to take years off your life.
Well, they "shot" the movie in early 2015, and I believe Andy was announced to direct in 2013, so around 4 years. He's actually been making Animal Farm for 6 years now, and it's likely going to come out around 2021 at this rate.
Ben M. Davies I am intrigued by an Animal Farm movie. didn’t know that.
Andy said 4 years in the video
4 years. They started making it before Disney one, and had to push it back so not to release it at same time.
My son and I devoured (if I can use this word) this movie. We loved everything about this movie. Now seeing and hearing about what goes in to make the scene, made me love it even more.
Smeagol really surpassed his addiction.
He looks like a whole new hobbit now.
Much BETTER than Disneys Jungle Book in every way possible. Well Done Serkis.
just amazing how this director got his arm cut off, then turned into a mechanical arm that can shoot, got turned into a weird elf goblin creature that steals rings fell into lava and still managed to create one of the greatest netflix movies.
I'll start watching the Oscars and Academy when they recognize motion capture as acting! Much love to Andy the GOAT!
miles better than the disney one
Martyn Drake That’s Great but would you agree that Andy Serkis’s Mowgli is the Closest adaptation to Rudyard Kipling’s Book than any of the films or Disney films that have come before?
Disney version is too happy.
NO ONE CARES ABOUT THE BOOK
@@sharkdudeshow9920 wrong. the book is amazing
Doesn't have amazing, catchy songs and memorable characters plus the execution of Mowgli was eeeeh but the direction was great and I love the thought process behind the movie.
Edit: I wanna watch the movie because the book is kinda boring plus movies are just better than books but there are exceptions
Losing weight and gaining weight for different roles is something Christian Bale admits is bad for his health and is now a thing of the past. These days he prefers transforming his body to replicate the look of animals.
I don't understand why when talking about this movie and whether people liked it or not, people keep comparing in to the Disney one. I'm not saying you're not allowed to have a preference, because you are. In fact, you most definitely have one if you've seen both because they are very different in tone and in the script. But whether it's good or not has nothing to do with the Disney version.
Exactly.
Andy’s attention to detail never fails to absolutely blow me away
0:55 Andy Serkis roasting Disney’s The Lion King remake 😂😂
i literally went into this movie thinking it was stupid unaware who directed it or who was playing in it and I cried not once, not twice, but 3 consecutive times
First time you put the name of the director into the title
TGDS But also everyone knows James Wan
Probably because of the possible confusion with The Jungle Book. They were specific about the actor he was talking about too.
Wonder Woman way more people know Serkis more than Wan
@@maxmusic5380 Whan?
Gotta use those key search words for more views
Disney should take notes before re-creating The Lion King with hyperrealistic cgi with no soul in the animals eyes whatsoever.
I wasn't planning on watching this movie but now I want to
My thought, exactly!
When I heard another live action Jungle Book movie was happening 2 years after the Disney version I was a little on the fence but after getting a better glimpse of Serkis's vision I can really see why he decided to do it. Hats off to you sir.
Andy's version was actually in development first but the mouse beat him to the punch on the release date. Both films were supposed to come out in 2016 (I think) but since Disney's version was so beloved, it was probably a lose-lose situation for WB.
What lion king 2019 needed 😔
Although i loved lion king 2019 but I think it would be better if it directed that way 😭
It's hilarious how he still looks like batman even as an animal.
The fact that this movie was completed over the period of four years makes it such an interesting subject, I would love to hear Andy sit down and just walk us through the whole history of it
What a genius.
This is underrated, it's such a good take on the jungle book
I like it when Andy Serkis draws pink glasses, wrinkles and, stink lines on his own character
He's not explaining Christian Bale, he is explaining his own movie.
Reading the reviews on mogli before deciding to either watch it or not is a mistake. Watch the movie first.. Im telling u. This movie has more realistic scenarios compare to jungle book. Its dark, but thats how it is in real life. Not all laughs and giggles.
When I first watched the movie I wasn’t expecting Doctor Strange a.k.a. Benedict Cumberbatch to play Shere Khan
Is he that new manager of United?
Hes really look like ole
