Shanghai in the Eyes of Fiimmakers - Arina Yakupova

Shanghai in the Eyes of Filmmakers invites panel judges of the 26th Shanghai International Film Festival and the 29th Shanghai TV Festival, honored guests, representatives, renowned directors, producers, international students as well as film educators from around the world to describe Shanghai’s image from their perspective, to better showcase and present the city to the world.
As the birthplace of Chinese films, Shanghai is more ready than ever to embrace the world. There are over 3,700 works from 105 countries and regions participating in this year’s SIFF, and more than 1,000 works from 57 countries and regions taking part in the STVF. The diverse background of both the works and the judges is further increasing the international renown of the festivals, and also offers global filmmakers and TV workers an opportunity to better savor the flavors of openness, innovation and inclusiveness of Shanghai.
Of the series’ protagonists, some are new to Shanghai and some are old friends. They are here to judge the works, to share their experience and to seek collaboration. They are here also to appreciate the charm and the human side of Shanghai. Beautiful, dynamic, open, diverse, enthusiastic, kind, unique, historic and modern… these are the words they use to describe Shanghai. They use their own personal experiences, however small, to interpret the city. Their observations and thoughts clash to create consonance, and this is the meaning of cultural exchange.
Arina Yakupova has a diverse background, having lived in Moscow, France, China, and the UK. She has studied at Lomonosov Moscow State University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and is now pursuing a career in journalism. She is passionate about celebrating cultural intersections and the beauty of everyday life, as highlighted in this column.
