    Water pools in a small part of our back patio. About 6 different contractors have all quoted us thousands of dollars to tear up and redo the concrete slab. I couldn't help but think it must be possible to just overlay concrete with a proper grade, and sure enough, here is the technique. It may not win any beauty awards, but I'd rather that than a swamp for a patio.

    • @DecoCreteTV
      @DecoCreteTV  5 місяців тому

      Thanks for the comment!! We don't have a full video on that exact thing, but we do have a few on the basics of forming a concrete slab. For exterior concrete, the minimum slope required to get the water running would be 1" of slope per 10', but depending on the situation, you might want to give it a little more. We prefer 1.5" per 10' on stamped concrete, just to make sure the water makes it over the grout lines & textures. I'll leave links to a few other videos that may be helpful. Thanks for this video. Jusr bought a place and am having this same issue on the enclosed breezeway that connects my house to my garage, except rather than water going into basement, it runs under the sill plate of the wall and runs into a low spot in the enclosed breezeway floor (same concrete pour).
    How well can I expect a concrete overlay to bond to the existing concrete pour? Existing pour has a smooth texture and is painted so obviously there would be some surface prep.

    • @DecoCreteTV

      After removing the paint and a strong pressure wash you can rely on the primer and overlay to bond.

      the material used in this video can be applied from 1/8" to 1.5" thick. there aren't any guarantees on longevity, but if the slab you are applying to is structurally sound these materials will generally last 15+ years

    Just wondering I have a concrete slab with 16 x 14 gazebo sitting on it, when it rains water ends up on it and I have to push with a broom or wait for it to evaporate. the cement that was put down was self levelling called Agilia, so the floor is completely level. Any ideas how I can slope from center out to all sides as this is a bigger job than just a porch walk out? Fantastic video by the way reading other people comments is proof of that as well as watching the video myself.

    • @DecoCreteTV
      @DecoCreteTV  2 місяці тому

      Thanks for the comment! The technique in this video would still work on a larger scale, you would just need longer screed board. If you work from center out to edge in the short direction, you could do this with an 8' board. It'll be tough to do that size of an area seamlessly, and it will require mutable batches of the mix. The best thing would be to treat this as a two step process. The first step would be creating the slope and it probably won't look that great at this point. Once you have the slope the way you want it, you could apply a thinner overlay to make it look good. I'll leave a link to our video on broomed overlay below. Thanks for watching Deco-Crete TV!!

    He went straight to the leveling trick, which is awesome and clever by the way, but he forgot to mention *important details* before doing the job. If that is a slab that has been there for some time, you better either pressure wash it or deeply clean it with muriatic acid to remove any dirt, grease, algae, etc. on that old concrete surface. New concrete is NOT glue nor paint. You can't just pour it and expect to perfectly stick to the previous surface because the old concrete is already cured. Concrete doesn't just react with new concrete and join together like when you use PVC cement, which chemically reacts with the material and creates the bond. For that same reason, you need to apply a concrete bonding agent to the cleaned slab before you pour the new cement. THAT will be the "glue" that will make both cement surfaces to join the best way possible. This is *very important* especially for the thinnest edge side, because the layer is so thin that the slightest stress will separate it from the slab, even walking on it. It will not have a way to attach itself and the simple effect of the temperature change between day and night or worse, winter and summer, will crack it all over and it will come off like if you have placed just a pie crust on top. It will crack and detach by itself. Make sure that you prepare surfaces as best as you can to have the best bonding. If the new surface continues to detach, you may need to go harder and probably get one of these concrete polishing machines with the very rough disk that creates deep groves in the original slab. Then it may have a really good rough surface to hold that new concrete in place without it detaching later.

      Thanks for the comment! We would agree 100%, the prep work is crucial for getting overlays to bond long-term! This video is about the re-sloping technique, we have another one for the prep work; I'll leave a link below. It's also important to follow the manufacturer's instructions anytime you're working with a product for the first time, as some might have specific procedures above and beyond the general "best practice" for concrete overlays. Thanks for watching Deco-Crete TV and offering your insight on this topic!!! ua-cam.com/video/UrwRi0_0I2Q/v-deo.html

    • @DecoCreteTV
      @DecoCreteTV  Місяць тому

      Thanks for the comment! As long as there's no paint or a heavy build up of sealer on the surface, the prep work is just a thorough power wash. After that you make any repairs if needed, and prime the surface with Sure Bond. I'll leave a link to another video that covers prep work for overlays. Thanks for watching Deco-Crete TV!!!

      Thanks for the comment! The thickness would depend on what kind of finish you're looking for. Our Trowel Overlay works good for broom finishes and light trowel textures. You would apply that at around 1/8" per coat. If you are looking for a stamped look, you would need to use our Stamp Overlay. That can applied from 1/4" - 1/2" thick. You could use the Easy Patch product used in this video to fill in the low spots and as long as the slab has enough pitch on it, the water should run off fine. As long as you don't mind the how the patches look, that all you need to do. If you want the whole slab to look seamless, you'll need to coat the entire surface with an overlay product. Can the Easy Patch material that you are using be stamped? Can it be colored using acid stain or pigment added to the mix? Just to clarify, you first used a bonding primer (Sure Bond 100?), then a scratch coat of slightly thinned Easy Patch, then regular Easy Patch. Do you allow the primer to dry before applying the scratch coat? I'm looking to resurface a patio. Thanks.

      Thanks for the comment! As with any concrete project, there no guarantees against cracking. That said, concrete overlays generally don't crack very often unless there are cracks in the existing concrete. In that case, there's a good chance it'll crack back through unless the crack is delt with first. Even if it dose crack, as long as you do the prep work, priming, and application properly, it'll just be a hair line crack and still function just fine. Thanks for watching Deco-Crete TV!!!
