- In this video, Leonard Matheson, PhD describes how faith and neuroscience work together to provide hope for people who have experienced a cerebrovascular stroke.
For decades, Dr. Matheson has been helping people with brain injuries tap the restorative power of faith and their built-in brain capacities to restore their quality-of-life.
In his book, Your Faithful Brain: Designed for so much more!, Dr. Matheson integrates faith and neuroscience, sharing stories from the frontiers of rehabilitation, where he has practiced since 1970, As he writes
"You've been designed for redemption and rehabilitation. God designed you and your brain to be ready to accept redemption made possible by the sacrifice of Jesus and to participate in rehabilitation to live life to the full.
How do I know this? Well, I've lived it, both personally and professionally. Plus, I've read it in the Bible. An ancient book that many people embrace and revere and others reject or despise, the Bible helps me fit in to God’s created reality.
Since 1970, I have been a teacher and researcher at America’s leading medical schools, and I have lectured throughout the world, focusing on what we call Interdisciplinary rehabilitation.
The idea is that physicians and psychologists and counselors and therapists work together with the family to help the patient restore their quality-of-life.
It takes a team because we look at each person from what we call a Biopsychosocial perspective. We consider each person in terms of his or her:

Psychological Resources
Social Resources
About 30 years ago I began to realize that, something was missing. What was missing was consideration of the person's spiritual resources.
Rehabilitation is so demanding that all of our resources are required. Many people have spiritual resources that are helpful.
Several years ago, I began to ask each of my patients where they stood with God, without putting any pressure on anyone because I know it's such a sensitive issue.
What I found was that about 80% of the people who came in my door had some sort of spiritual background. Some of them were quite active in their faith, but many had fallen away by the time tragedy struck.
I started to look into this from a scientific standpoint. I found that faith and spirituality are important to recovery from a serious illness or accident.
There's actually quite a bit of research, with about 85% demonstrating a positive effect. That is, to the degree that people have an active faith and a helpful faith community, they do better. They have higher quality of life and live longer.
The 85% research effect showed up in my patients as well. My patients who believe in a benevolent God and participate in a supportive faith community do better. I can't say that about everyone, but that's generally the case.
That's part of the reason that I wrote my book. For me, the title says it all. Your Faithful Brain: Designed for so Much More!
Even after a Stroke, a faithful brain has amazing resources that can make a huge difference in your recovery.

I have had 7 strokes I'm still walking and talking I was very strong before my first I'm still strong. I just have no balance so I use a walker. I live at home alone and keep my home clean, cook my meals, and exercise. I also have an amazing healing factor. i've been a Diabetic for 21 years i heal like I'm not a diabetic at all, and have no signs of neuropathy. I consider myself blessed by God.

I have been with brain stroke all most 4 years, under of treatment by the Doctor whom treated me was very shock the way I get recover and moving. I have to go and see him after six months. I am still in pain expecially on the right side. By faith God did miracle in my life. I know the way I have been suffered and the way I am today.

3 month anniversary coming up on my stroke, brain fog is the worst and some cognitive issues, I read it and make mistakes, I was always known for attention to detail and now, it can be frustrating I didn't read the direction correct. God's been with me all the way on this

@@carmella88 I didn’t think it was severe actually thought it was a TIA, because it was only my speech- I couldn’t say certain words and it made my BP go really high (not normal). However when I was looking at the MRI and told it was a perfect bullseye on speech I got the impression it was more serious than I thought.
I'm hoping to use information here to heal my grandmother. Her stroke was in a bad spot, basal ganglia. The hospital denied she ever had a stroke under their care and diagnosed her with dementia. During a later visit a brain scan showed i was right and she did have a stroke. Grandma lives with my wife and i and requires round the clock care. We have to feed her and change her diapers and clean her, ect.. she alsobhas ESRD and CHF so saving her is not possible, she just turned 84 in February 😢. Im hoping to buy her a little more time and maybe get some quality of life back via brain recovery. Please pray for my grandmother and our family. Her name is Virginia and she is very loved. God bless you and your wife for your kindness and love for ypur grandmother. I will be praying for her and wil pass the prayer request to our prayer team. I also had a stroke in 2021 but I'm only 57 years ild but it left me withdisabilities. I am also blessed to have a loving family, my sons and my husband. Despite a year of intensive rehabilitation in a rehab center, I have not cemetery recovered but I'm just happy and thankful to God that I still have my cognitive abilities intact and was able to recover eating and speaking abilities after intensive training. I remain positive, gratefuland full of faith that I will still fully recover. That's why I understand your challenges but also fully appreciate your love and sacrifice. I took care of my grandmother and grandparents who Also suffered stroke. First, my thanks to you and your husband for your service to our country. And secondly thank you for staying by his side. I had an Ischemic Stroke on Xmas day 2022, and am in recovery. It's very hard and sometimes I get lonely and want to give up. Instead I keep pushing and exercising even though I'm not seeing any progress right now. Do not give up hope..there are endless possibilities therefore we must not limit our beliefs because we are told that recovery is limited. We have the power to create our own realities. I understand that stroke is a condition that is so difficult. I know because i have a friend who confides in me. My grandmother had massive stroke Sunday morning while she was in covid unit. We were not able to see her so when I called them 5 am to check up on her they pretended like she had the stroke 15 minutes before I called what a lie then immediately went to the hospital and demand to get out of the covid unit so why did the doctor in the covid unit decided to put my grandmother in comfort care and told us she is 92 and she will die less than an hour after 4 days she still fighting and I refuse to put her in comfort care so since Wednesday she started getting treatment like IV fluid and antibiotic. She is getting CT scan and MRI done today. I will not give up on my grandmother and I will fight for her until she comes out of coma
just had a stroke a month, ago the funny thing is that im a physical therapist worked w/ many stroke pts through the years at least ican walk some even w/ o cane& my speech memory & cognition are intact this is avery challenging condition especially cfor someone who loves outdoors & adventures what gives me hope is my fiance who continues to support me showing kindness & understanding

As I mention below and in my book, our brains were designed for relationships. Our brains actually perform much better when we share activities with each other; neuroplasticity is stimulated and recovery is accelerated. I had a massive debilitating stroke in 2021 and after a year and a half of intensive rehabilitation I still am left with disabilities and was told they are permanent. I don't believe that. Zi believe God will heal me. I can eat and speak now and I continue to exercose daily hoping to fully recover. It is hard. Some days, I feel discouraged specially when I don't get so much support anymore coz it has been 3 years and my improvements are very very slow. I continue to be the coach of my life and keep motivating myself and believing in God’s power to prrform miracles. Please pray for me.

this is fantastic, im recovering from an ischemic stroke....and my faith is strong, im doing my own rehab via neuroplasticity...but, i m disapponted in the tone that this sort of thing is something to be undertaken for folks like me, who now, due to the stroke, not having an income, nor being able to get any sort of disability.....i have to go back to work, drive a car a fair distance, and try to work in my old job in the financial world. and it takes a lotta brain power to do it, im not too happy about having to go back so early....other than that...this is inspirational....thank you.
Hello Frank, thanks for writing in. I'm delighted that you found this video helpful. In addition to my book and the book by Jill Taylor, take a look at The Brain That Changes Itself by Norman Doidge. I recommend all three of our books as helpful. You say that your faith is strong; I'm delighted to hear that and I want to be sure that you are participating in a faith community of some sort. As you have heard me say, our relationships are crucial for healthy brain development. This is doubly so for your stroke recovery. So, participate in church or synagogue or temple or mosque; anywhere that you can find people who have an active spiritual life. I'm convinced that spirituality is a crucial aid to recovery. I'm a Christian, but I find that any sincere spirituality in which one is seeking a higher purpose and trying to fit their stroke experience within a larger reality is helpful.
Hello Frank, thanks for writing. I'm glad that you are on the road to recovery and I want to do what I can do encourage you. Remember that you have ADA protections available to you that can help you transition at work gradually up to your preinjury level of work demands. It takes time and patience, but working with a good doctor and therapist really can get you back to where you want to be. Keep this in mind: Recovery is not a straight line trajectory, it's a corkscrew. Sometimes you are up and sometimes you are down, but if you look back over the past few weeks and months, you'll notice that today's down is probably higher than your earlier ups. I hope that makes sense to you. Please keep us posted.
I am very thankful for this video! I felt like you were telling my story, because I believe I will recover! And I am recovering very successfully. 1year and 8month ago I had a severe brain injury. Sharp, 10cm long icepick went into my brain. My whole right side of my body was completely paralyzed and numb! Speech was also gone... since then I am recovering very good, despite what doctors told me. Even after doctors kept telling me i still believed i will recover, and I am, thanks Allah(God), my mom, my therapists! And thank YOU doctor for this wonderful video! I wish you the best!

Thank you for this video. I got a stroke two years ago, paralysing my left side. I can still speak, read and write, which I am incredibly thankful for.
I see in your video that the family is very important for the stroke rehab. Unfortunately my wife left me after I got the stroke, I am an only child and both my parents are gone. So I am pretty alone...And I am not particularly christian. I tend to 'stumble over' old pictures and other memories from my life, which tend to make me sad and worried hate I'll never get back that life. I have had some progress the last two years, but am still FAR away from where I want to be. I can clench my left hand with some strength, but still can't extend the fingers. This makes me very nervous, as without extension, I can't really open my hand to grab anything... I am trying anything... I used to be a film maker and musician, playing guitar, drums and piano, anodising and write songs.In addition to this, I had bought a farm inSweden, was renovating this and had just started to grow vegetables. I am so afraid I will never be able to get back to that life again. I also wrote very fast with both hands and the touch system. What I am writing now is done with some fingers on my right hand...
I lived in Sweden when I got the stroke, and at the hospital there I met a man who was very religious/ christian and that wanted to pray for me, and I said 'sure'. At the time I had a lot of pain in the shoulder due to it being subluxated. I of course was also paralysed in my left side, but he chose to focus mostly on the pain, commanding and demanding from Jesus that he take away my pain, etc.
Now, two years later the pain is so to say completely gone with only a hint now and then when I try to lift the arm. I just thought that maybe his prayer had an effect...? At least on the pain in that case, but unfortunately not much on the functionality. but due to the pain being virtually gone, I have started to consider going to a church of some sorts here in Oslo, Norway, where i live now and ask someone there to pray for me... what do you think...?

Had a stroke 29th May 2018, still no use on my left side, in U.K, Staff at Winchester hospital, Twyford ward were mmostly amazing, speech unaffected fortunately.
God bless you and good luck! I had my stroke in August, 2018. I'm still working hard to recover ( I have spasticity on my affected side). I could not move my right hand or fingers at all for over a month after my stroke. One day, I moved and focused on my fingers, with the help of my good hand non stop for hours. It started to get sore lol, but I kid you not, after doing so I could suddenly twitch two of my fingers a tiny bit and it got better with time from there. I still have a lot of work to do, but it is improving and keep trying. Although I don't know how it will get better, I continue to have faith that it will get better and it is. It's slow and I have some really bad days, but it is getting better. Hang in their!
Don't give up I'm 19 and had a stroke 2 months ago my left side was paralyzed now I can walk and move my left arm a little but I'm not giving up and you shouldn't either God bless 🙏

My mother had sroke last feb 6 2024 until now march 3 she in the icu the half brain is damage and now he had a pneumonia the doctor advice us to tracheostomy surgery but no assurance we always pray

It was great to listen to u I had a mojor stroke 10years ago and I lost my left side and I was left handed my faith has grow a lot it was very low living in Northern Ireland and every 6 clock all I seen where funerals I prayed for peace ever nite when I had my stroke I went to Lourdes. I relate to what this woman discusses, I experience on a daily. Vision issues, hearing issues, coordination n balance issues.
I had a stroke during covid and my family abandoned me in the hospital and i never received physical therapy because everything shut down my left side is paralyzed and was shoved in a nursing home

I'm the sole caregiver for my wife who had her stroke almost 2 yrs ago in 2019. I know this is a old video but still gives us hope after watching.
She had her barrage of in patient/outpatient therapy for 2 - 4 week periods. Home exercises were ending up in arguments and frustrations, so tapered off. After watching this I have 2 questions:

Thank you for your patience; I'm sorry it's taken so long to get back to you. I've just been swamped as I start seeing people again after they get vaccinated.
In response to your first question, the stress chemical of concern is cortisol, a key part of our homeostasis. Cortisol helps to prepare us for challenges, peaking an hour or two before we awaken and gradually tapering off over the course of the day. However, as we experience stressors throughout the day, more cortisol is produced and released. Our brains are designed to handle the ebb and flow of cortisol, but not a constantly high level, which stunts the synaptogenesis process. Synapses are continually growing from the neuron cell body to reach out and connect with other neurons to promote learning and adaptation and change. Constant high levels of cortisol trim the new synapses, limiting the ability of neurons to connect. This is why it is so important to include things like exercise and prayer or meditation in our daily lives, as well as focus on preparing for bed in the evening so that the residuals from a stressful day don't impair restorative sleep.
In response to your second question, the neurophysiology of mammal brains supports this process at any time in life; the younger the better but you're never too old. Time since the stroke probably doesn't make a difference, but there is not a definitive study because we typically rely on Therapists to provide treatment, limited by their need to get paid. If you take a look at the experience of Jill Bolte-Taylor, her mother's ongoing involvement supplemented by many friends and family and her own knowledgeable determination to persist is what brought her all the way back from a catastrophic stroke. It's only one case, but if you talk to any older rehab providers, we all know of others. The scientific research on this approach to stroke rehabilitation is continuing, albeit at a slow pace. Each of the studies that has come along in the last several years points to a modest but significant positive effect; this approach actually works. The primary problem in the efficacy of this approach is that it takes a lot of time and repetition. If families can't pick up what Therapists can't get authorization to provide, this approach is not going to be very effective. Throughout my 50+ years of practice, I have always demanded that families get involved. To accomplish this, I invite them onto the team and provide education and help them to develop a "can-do" attitude about home-based and community-based rehabilitation. After the initial workup and development and implementation of a therapy plan, I encourage Therapists to become coaches to the family rather than to continue to be the primary rehabbers. Whenever this happens, the involvement of families makes the rehabilitation experience much more successful.
So, to sum up. What I want my children and grandchildren to do when I suffer my stroke is to get very involved with the OT's and PT's to learn how to carry forward their plans after insurance will no longer support their active involvement. Most of my rehabilitation will take place after discharge from formal care both at home and in a public gym with my family educating the personal trainer who works with older folks on how to use appropriate conditioning equipment three or four days a week one hour to two hours at a time. I'll do my best to have good sleep and proper nutrition and I'll give it a long recovery trajectory with the confidence that this is the best approach and it is going to pay off. I'll have follow-up appointments with my Doc and the OT's and PT's every three or four months to show them how well I'm doing and encourage them to bring about an attitudinal shift; just like I'm trying to do with you right now.

@@faithfulbraincounseling545 Thank you for the well documented detailed response. Reading through it actually solidify s some past observations I've had. Pre Wife's stroke I was in a high tech career in a position of solving complex problems and one of the go-to members of the team for answers.
For past 2 years I find myself in a caregiver setting where nothing makes sense and I have no answers for someone I care for deeply. I suspect my observation that I sometimes feel myself loosing ability in thinking was due to relating to my wife may actually be to Cortisol created by the stress of this unknown situation.

I had 2 strokes early October an 3rd one getting to the hospital. I see a neurologist an primary doctor. Never Ben sick before always Ben o good health. Ben eating good following doctors orders. Now I get real bad headaches it brings me to tears..pain pills don't help anymore an I tell them but they say it's just in my head..what can I do when doctors already kick me to the curb..they say I just need it too let heal by itself,. An my vision is fading with the pain. I.ve done Brain waves an M.R.I. an he says everything is fine. But what causes the bad headaches that makes me cry. Can't sleep at night..not go to the store cuz the lights an ppl. Talking bothers my head.🤧. What's wrong. Neurologist say I have 2 black spots in back of my head which brains cell are dead.. i.m a miracle..i.m alive. God wouldn't let death take me. I thank him every day.🙏⛪. Help me..please.🙏

Dear Aurora, there are many things that cause severe headaches after a stroke or brain injury. Don't give up on your doctors because they are often as frustrated as you are and they actually like challenges as long as their patients are willing to persevere. Be sure that you are giving yourself "just-right challenges", pushing yourself a little bit, but not too far. You need to be careful about properly stimulating yourself, so talk to your doctor and therapists about how much is just enough and how much is too much. Please keep us posted.
Im new on here but my husband recently had a stroke but he was getting them same headaches he couldn't sleep at all but this been going on for years.Doctors say it because his bp is high.i dont know im new to all this .I just my husband and everyone who suffered for a stroke dont never give up.

Hi soc.I'm 73yr old.I fell and hurt my head and neurogist said that I had a mild stroke. Had an Mri and ct scan.
I was very active before that .Drive ,cook,do washing and do household chores.
Now my memory is not that good.Cannot remember some of the things ,names etc.Had to give up driving. I had some physio and do some exercises. Rest when I'm tired.Please help as to what I should.I'm on Keppra meds.

My dad had a stroke on his right side of brain. Last year January, he has come quite far but his vision is still blurred 😫 his lost his independent going out alone. Any advice on vision? Thanks

Some people cannot be in charge of anything. Not everyone has control over their own lives or living situation. Also, worth mentioning that the very changes due to stroke stops them from doing all the exercise and getting sleep. It is a catch-22.

I'm not a Doctor, so this video says absolutely NOTHING to me, i'm 70 and had a mild stroke a month back, i'm doing my daily exercises and taking only aspirin as medicine, so what i need to know, 1st, will my brain cells repair themselves ? 2nd would someone tell me if i will be totally cured ?

Yes, that's what a lot of people anticipate, but it happens much less often than you would expect. In fact, the turning to God that people do when they get blindsided by catastrophes like a stroke helped me to reconsider my atheism in the early years of my career. Danny Munday, a 14-year-old with spinal muscular atrophy who needed to sleep on a respirator got me started reconsidering my stance against God. In fact, I wasn't just an atheist, I was an anti-theist. It took me a few years of being in the trenches with severely traumatized adolescents before I started to use my scientific mind and training to consider the possibility that faith in God is an important rehab resource. The research actually demonstrates that fact; faith in a loving God makes a scientifically-measurable difference. You might want to get Francis Collins's book on his experience to explore this further. He is the director of the National Institutes of Health, a few years younger than me who went through a similar early career experience that gradually led him to start his faith journey.
