I will say what I think is miss for Nancy is that sometimes at the end the culprit is about to lock Nancy inside a death trap and she just stands there and does not even try to stop them. My two favorite instances of this are Secret Of The Scarlet Hand and Last Train To Blue Moon Canyon. If someone was going to lock me in a tomb or get me trapped in a cave-in, I would at least try to do something.

One thing that’s interesting about the games vs the books is that in almost all of the games she’s solo detectiving. I’ve mostly read the yellow hardbacks, but in those she usually has direct tangible help (not just phone a friend) from Bess, George, Ned, and sometimes even Ned’s football buddies, Hannah, etc.
I wonder if a lot of Nancy’s stumbles here could be made up if she were really working with her team. Alibi in Ashes showed that in a cool way as each of her team had different relationships with the suspects.

I can definitely understand the change, though. Video games in general tend to fall on the side of "the protagonist does everything, even when maybe logically they shouldn't".

@@staticradio724 totally. It would be kind of boring to watch perfect detectiving in games. Plus ND is still a teenager so I think it adds to her youthful charm! ☺️

I have a headcannon that, in the games at least, Nancy is nerodivergent. To me that puts a bit of a realistic spin on her fails and wins. Nancy is horrible when it comes with social cues and situations, but excels in aspects she is truly interested in. Obviously her primary hyperfixation would be her detective work, but when she finds something she's interested in she puts her all into it and then moves on to the next thing. But while she does genuinely care about her friends and loved ones, she has a difficult time reading the room, picking up on boundaries unless laid out clearly in front of her. Let's not forget her wrecked sleep schedule, stay up all day and night running around completing puzzles and then sleeping for 12 hours so she can make sure she can do a specific puzzle at a specific time

I’d argue her biggest fail as a detective is her failure upon multiple occasions to consider the person who brought her in on a case as a suspect. The most obvious example of this would be Victor Lossett. Mystery solver rule Number One: everyone is a suspect until hard evidence proves otherwise.

  • @ForSureTotallyLauren

I never even noticed that she told suspects about the magicians room! It is an especially bad slip of judgement considering that in Treasure in the Royal Tower, the game right before that, she has enough sense to not reveal what she found in the ski slope tool shed to a suspect.

Nancy can be very hit-or-miss with her sleuthing. Maybe that's why she always calls herself an 'amateur' detective.

  • @kristenbooks

I don’t have a specific example off the top of my head, so this might be a misrepresentation, but my biggest knock against Nancy for being a good detective is her sometimes being a bit slow on the uptake- trusting something or someone she obviously shouldn’t, not realizing the obvious culprit is so obvious, asking “what do you mean” a million times when the meaning is obvious, etc. It makes sense from a gaming perspective for the player but OOF does it sometimes have me yelling at her from the other side of the screen!

Nancy's biggest fail, in fact, the only game where it could be argued that Nancy lost, was Ransom of the Seven Ships. Nancy carries the culprit's water the whole game, and ends up handing him a valuable treasure map and letting him make his getaway. The game tries to soft pedal that by suggesting that maybe possibly the culprit got himself killed soon after escaping, but whether he did or not, that was none of Nancy's doing. All that Nancy did was to escape the half-hearted trap that the culprit had put her in. But survival can't be considered victory, only a consolation prize.
The occasional (non-fatal) defeat makes a series seem a little more realistic. Quite a few of Sherlock Holmes' cases were less than totally successful. Sometimes he solved or probably solved the case but the culprits got away. Sometimes he'd form a provisional theory that would be proven wrong upon investigation. Sometimes the case would resolve itself before he could act on his solution. Once he found the missing jewels, but had to pay 3000 pounds of his client's money to get them back. A couple of times he sympathized enough with the culprit to let them get away. Twice his client was murdered before the case was over. But Holmes' most famous "defeat", to the well-known adventuress, Irene Adler, was really more of a draw (each outsmarted the other, and Holmes' client was happy with the outcome, which is what really matters). Real people don't win every time. Even Babe Ruth led the league in strikeouts 5 times.

That's such a great point about the realism of not always succeeding in a case! Now I sort of wish we'd had more of those.

I don't necessarily think the question is whether or not Nancy is a good detective. Considering she's successfully solved 30-some-odd cases, I think we can safely say she is a good detective. I think the real question is how much tact/caution she applies in solving said mysteries. And that, I think, depends on the writer xD

To be fair, most of the characters in SAW don't pronounce their names (and other Japanese words) correctly because Miwako's voice actress is the only one that's actually Japanese! 😭 I don't think anyone pronounces Takae's name correctly the entire game! Nancy's pronunciation is definitely the most egregious tho. Sorry, just had to rant for a second because that's been a huge pet peeve of mine since I first played the game at 13.
Great video as always! I think it's very interesting to note that most of Nancy's fails stem from her lack of social etiquette lol. What's also interesting is how she interacts with subjects who have lost a loved one. In some games, she's extremely empathetic and helpful (Joy Trent and Gunnar), but other times she is very much the opposite lol (Shimizu family and Ma). I wonder why such similar circumstances invoked such different reactions from her?

My bet was with Joy, Nancy has empathy to help joy piece back her past with her mom so she was sensitive about that. Joy dealt with blurred memories so she doesn't remember her mom and how she died.
whereas with miwako and yumi both were understanbly pretty aggravated with Nancy for her prying and admits their guilt in their belief of failing to save Kasumi to get her to leave them alone. gotta admit it's also rude of Nancy to pry them even after she found out how their mom died.
