- Every since I’ve first got on a skiff to fish, the thought of owning a boat or a kayak has been on my mind. After about the third time renting a skiff, I noticed that it was made out of plywood. So I built my own.
Check out the build, I’ll be on the ocean and will get the videos out asap.

It's a shame Jeff's website has been taken down. I'm glad I downloaded a lot of his study plans and other free materials from his website.
Congratulations on a great build. I'm also going to build the Seneca because I have to launch from the surf here in Indonesia. No boat ramps.
Edit: I know a lot of builders are going to be disappointed about Jeff Spira passing and his website deactivated but there's a great channel on UA-cam called World Boat Skiff. He's got an excellent tutorial for building a 17' flat bottom skiff very similar to Jeff's Pacific Power Dory and he's also selling plans. I've got a couple episodes in my playlist if anyone wants to check it out.
His passing is Sad and it is a shame the website is down; so disappointed. 😢 thanks for the recommendation for an alternate source of information!
Yes, Jeff’s passing was very sad. While building two of his boat designs, I had the opportunity to email him back and forth. He seemed to be passionate about his boat designs and helping people build their own boats. I jokingly said we should have a club those who built Jeff’s boats. I think there is a lot of us. Some, like me have built more than one. I haven’t found anyone that built one of Jeff’s boats that didn’t like their boat after building it. I love the low power requirement of mine. Again, great boat & nice video.

Great build! I build the Hudson skiff, i wasnt aware of him passing. Send and email couple of months ago and didnt get an answer. About yout build, i did mine with that same flooring, and after some fishing trips I change it to a plywood blind floor.

Nice build!!! I was unaware of Jeff Spiras passing. I was looking at several of his boats, possibly to combine two sets of plans to come up with a unique boat. I ended up buying an old boat to restore so maybe some other day I will build a Spira.

Awesome build! I'm super bummed that Jeff is no longer with us. After looking at his designs for years, I was about to buy a couple of his plans this week. (Dory, V hull and I think it was called the Mission Bay? the little ski boat.) I have the summer off and tools collected for a build to start. Oh well, I'll look for some other plans. Hope you enjoy your boat for years to come.

I believe the Mission Bay is actually a little stitch and glue skiff. I'm in the same boat (or rather not in the boat) because when I finally got ready to order I saw the website was closed. But I've studied enough that I think I can get by with the study plans alone. Thank goodness I downloaded a few while they were available.

Iam from a small to in Sask Canada I to built my first skiff and same as you I messed up a couple times nothing I couldnt hide lol planning on building a bigger better one love your new skiff awesome.

Great build....so sad to hear that the world lost Jeff Spira. I purchased a set of his 17 tillamook plans...but haven't started building yet.....man....I know Jeff was a big inspiration for me to try and build a boat...I am sure 1000s of DIY builders were given the confidence by Jeff to take the plunge....

Nice build and colors! I was in the same "boat" as you thinking about kayaks or some kind of small vessel too but I think I'm going the porta-bote 14' route. Wish I had the skills to build one like you! Cheers

Beautiful build! How big of motor? What made you decide on this model?
Thanks! I have a 6hp but I’m looking for a 15hp for it to get it moving a little faster. I decided on this model mainly due to storage, but now I’m regretting the size. I’m building a bigger boat to get me out deeper in the ocean. The Seneca is great but I wouldn’t take it too far out.
These boats are pretty cool. I have a 20' Pacific style dory I picked up. Has a 25hp inside an engine well, rather than hanging off the transom. It's an excellent fishing/crabbing boat. I need to repaint the exterior though, what kind of paint did you use?
@@alexjackson858 They're pretty awesome! The manual I got from Jeff spira has a few recommendations, he has a video on youtube about paint for boats, very informative. After watching his video and reading the manual I ended up using a rustoleum oil based enamel paint from Home Depot.

Thanks! Unfortunately the plans aren’t available at this time, there’s a boat builders group on Facebook that was created by Jeff Spira, I think a few of the family members might be on it, you can join the group and message them, maybe they can work something out.

Thanks man! Currently I have a 6hp Evinrude, I’m saving up for a 15hp to get it moving faster than 7mph
@@pacific_cliffs2363 cool. i have the same issue with my livingston. I have a 6hp but saving for a 9.9. like you i was only getting up to 7 - 8 miles an hr. Motors are so damn expensive! haha. Good luck out there.

@@mohamed-ld8jh his plans are still under copyright. You would need to contact Jeff's estate or whoever is handling disposition of his business. There are lots of other boat plans available from other people.

Thanks brotha! I used to build homes as a carpenter so I’m pretty at home wood working, it’s very similar but boat building is definitely another animal 🙏🏽🙏🏽😎
