Been away from my art for a few years, and trying to remember half of what I've forgotten. Appreciate the explanations. I'm not only remembering things but learning new ones as well. Thanks
voila is really the cherry on top, thank you so much on the tutorial on how to mix graphite and charcoal together, i really feel like this was the simplest and easiest tutorial ever.
Charcoal over graphite power actually works pretty good, i use the powder to create the under tones and light shading then charcoal pencils for the darker finish work, as long as the graphite is put down to a level you can't see it's infamous "shine" you shouldn't have any problem although you'll have to use a softer grade charcoal than you'd would on clean paper. The trick is to not completely fill the paper's tooth with the graphite powder so the charcoal still has something to bite into, that takes a little time to use to and using the right paper is a must, velum bristol and most Canson papers have the right amount of tooth as does 300 series Strathmore. Mixed media, hot press water color and smooth bristol won't work and heavier (90 plus lb, 130 plus gsm) drawing papers can be a challenge as well.
I’ll have to try that. I’ve had good luck with Mix Media but I mostly draw with charcoal only. I haven’t drawn enough with mixing the two mediums to have a paper preference past Mix Media paper. Alway down to try new techniques though. Thanks for the info John 😊🙌🏻
Thank you for this channel! I love how u explain step by step. I’m a newbie when it comes to drawing, I’ve done a few portraits, and I’m so proud of myself. I Absolutely LOVE , drawing and I love learning new techniques, and your tips! ❤ 🙏🙏🙏
Excellent tutorial. Very professionally presented and the fluency and clarity of the artist was phenomenal. I will definitely follow the techniques demonstrated today and try to master my art which I understand is an ongoing process to no end. Thank you. GQ
Hi. This is very helpful for beginners as well. I want to do a blend of the 2 mediums. By the way, I'm interested with the glove you used. Nice to use.
I’m glad you enjoyed this video. The glove I use is nice especially if you draw A LOT like I do. Plus it keeps the oil from my hand off the paper. Hope you are well and take care! 😃🙌🏻
@@MesserCreations since you said to keep it in the family, should I just stick with 2b charcoal with a 2b graphite and like 6b charcoal with a 6b graphite as an example?
@@MesserCreations thanks bro I'm new to charcoal and I'm trying to get hang of it. I heard graphite are great for sketching but I'll make sure the family groups stick together 💯
Absolutely, I prefer charcoal over graphite for my drawings but it’s only because I like the rich contrast I can achieve between my high and my low values. I’ve always thought graphite just left something to be desired in that regard. That’s just my opinion though. Take care! 😃
I want to use charcoal but i only have the bar style compressed chacoal because chacoal doesnt shine unlike graphite. But i use graphite more than charcoal because its kinda messy because of the powder. And thanks for this video because i know how to use both charcoal and graphite.
That’s a great question Chelsea. I have yet to use those two mediums together so I can’t speak to it. I would think that they would work but as far as the aesthetic being appealing I have no idea. Maybe try it out and let me know?
Absolutely, whenever you go to seal your drawing with the spray you’ll only spray it after you have decided that you are completely finished with the drawing. Hope this helped you, and take care! 😃
I learned this pretty quickly, charcoal and graphite don't play well together. Curious how mixing powder for different values would work. On a side note, Gelly pens are overrated. They clog so easily.
Nice video, will be trying to apply graphite and charcoal appropriately and trying to plan my drawings out beforehand, which would make sense lol. I agree with when you say you'll always be learning new stuff as you go. For me even some of the most basic things, took me a while to wrap my head around and understand. It's good sometimes you understand why before you execute.
Glad it was helpful! For me I think the biggest thing that will help any artist is to understand the fundamental principles of their medium of choice. That way they will have a solid foundation to go off of. Hope you are doing well and staying safe, take care! #neverstopdrawing
Maybe im slow, but does soft medium and hard (charcoal or graphite), mean the variances of shades of light and dark, or how soft or hard it feels on paper. When looking at the charcoal scale, the soft, medium and hard I didnt see any difference in shade or how it looked. The graphite scale it all looked the same to me til you got into the H's. Hard maybe looked lighter, but I honestly didnt see any differences. That really confuses me. I try to note similarities to make things easier but cant here. Like was thinking maybe the higher the number the darker the shade but all the numbers vary.
Thank you for asking about this Anna. When it comes to charcoal the less binder that is in the charcoal the lower of a value to typically get, (but not always)* it depends on the brand and type of charcoal you use. Also your pressure control that you use when applying the charcoal onto the paper will also play into how light or dark it appears. When it comes to graphite typically the softer the rating the lower the value and the higher the rating the lighter, again this has to do with the amount of binder infused into the graphite and the pressure control you use during your actual application. I hope that helps? Let me know if it doesn't and I can try to clarify more.
Wow been looking for this for some time, struggling with dark backgrounds and attempting to mix both mediums. Your simple yet comprehensive explanation has given me food for thought, and demo was just excellent. Great video thanks
Hi! May I ask, when do I use the soft, medium, and hard charcoal pencils along with their specific graphite ranges? Can I use each range for different parts of an image or I must stick to a certain range only when drawing an image? Would appreciate your response, Thank you!
Hello, the range chart that I show in the video is more so one can see and understand which charcoals correlate best to graphite’s of the same consistency. So to answer your first question you can use them whenever you feel is necessary. You can use each range for different parts of your drawing. The biggest thing to remember is soft charcoal is for your base layers so naturally the graphite’s that correlate to the soft charcoal are the ones you would want to use with your soft charcoal. Medium charcoal is for building up your low values and solidifying your underlying form. Lastly your hard charcoal is for detail work. Hope that explains it better? Let me know and I can always clarify to help 😃 take care!
Excellent instructions. I've made the mistake of mixing with no regard to matching groups, as you have done here, with predictable results. Can't wait to have a crack at it. Thank you for posting.
I really appreciate the fact that you took the time to film this video however, I would have liked for you to explain it instead of writing it and talking about it simultaneously. I am very visual and i tend to look at what you are writing instead of what you are saying and it throws me off.
Absolutely, I had a professor once who would write and talk about what he was teaching at the same time and I personally enjoyed that teaching style. Everyone is different, I do have a lot more drawing tutorials where I just talk and draw. Maybe those would be useful for you? Hope they help and thank you for the feedback. Take care 😊

I only use charcole, soft pastels and acrylic paint.
I’m mostly charcoal and graphite. Sometimes I’ll sketch out drawings in colored pencils.

I like the matte look of the charcoal. The graphite often gives this shiny look. I hate it. Maybe just using it smudged will work.
