  • I plan on making videos like this every week or so, showing a patch that I've been working on, with whatever is in my rack. Hopefully people will follow these and they will get more interesting as I add more modules and get more complexity to the patches.
Let me know your suggestions for what modules I should add! I'm trying to build an ambient/drone system with lots of dark, watery and growling noises. Here's some vague version of what I'm envisioning for the system: www.modulargri... This will change, of course.
If you're interested in downloading a high quality version of this track, it's up on Bandcamp, along with some of my other stuff: bit.ly/2THGSHT

    Hey nice texture!
I think for drone/ambient slow moving envelopes/LFO's are really nice. Pamela's got you settled for that.
I'm personally more of a ''patch-it-yourself'' fan. So noise sources, S&H, envelope generators, maybe some logic stuff.
what would signal path/general idea be with the grid setup you've put in the link?

I'm kind of imagining Pam's providing clock to Grids, as well as CV transitions to the modulation inputs of Elements and Nebulae. Grids would provide triggers to the sound sources such as Elements and would also drive MIDI V/OCT coming from Disting, and then signals would processed through filters and the DSP. I'm also envisioning some video synthesis going on here, being controlled by the same triggers that are controlling the sound.
On a side note, the observatory and HD media player are kind of a stand-in for a module that I'm building, which is basically a Raspberry Pi strapped to a screen and put into a Eurorack module so you can run Pure Data patches and possibly even some digital video synthesis.

I don't know anything about video synthesis, so can't say anything on that matter.
Second sound source with frequency modulation capabilities might also be a good idea for the watery growling noises. complex oscilator would be sick but maybe a bit big. Make Noise STO could do it, also has a sub output for the beefy stuff.
Remember that grids only sends out gates(afaik), so you can only ping your elements with that, it would make for nice rythmic effects! but for longer drony type of stuff you might want to trigger some longer lasting envelopes. (PAM could do this).
What I think make drones/ambient stuff interesting, is when you can layer modulation on top of each other. So LFO's modulating other LFO's for example. You could achieve this with something like a batumi for instance (which is also syncable!). That way you can still have the absolute control a Pam's will give but also open up the possibilities to more complex patching!
With complex patching you discover all the weird wonky stuff and that's what makes modular fun.
In the end it's all about how you want to setup your system!
