In awe of how good Australian song writing was back then, alot of the Sydney stuff mainly, midnight oil, inxs, Australian crawl, cold chisel, crowded house , The Angels, Mental as Anything..was all happening
"One Perfect Day came to me one night in 1979. I was still getting over the death some months before, of a girlfriend, Christine, who I’d been very much in love with. And not having been present when she died, or seen her buried, her loss left a nagging feeling that I just couldn’t throw, that she was still alive somewhere - so I was having trouble moving on. That particular night I was sitting on a couch watching the late night news on a little black and white TV - coverage of the British elections, and it seemed as if Thatcher might lose. I’d received a letter that day from an old friend, Kerry, who was living in London working as a nurse, and I had been writing a reply, which was lying on the table. On the couch beside me was a book I’d been reading, This Perfect Day by Ira Levin, a science-fiction novel about a false utopia. So I’m sitting there noodling on my guitar, gazing blankly at the British election on the little black and white screen, thinking of Kerry, having just finished reading this book, and I began singing, and as often happens, the song just happened - very quickly. The two short verses and chorus drew together all the elements I’ve mentioned and wrapped them around the core of Christine’s death . And I had yet another song of missing and yearning. I recorded the song on an old cassette, then played it back. It seemed oddly complete, though there wasn’t much to it. I thought maybe it needed more, because after all, two verses and a chorus isn’t much. But still, there was a strange symmetry to it that seemed to work. I woke my girlfriend Carol and played the song to her. 'It’s a hit,' she said and went back to sleep. And that’s the only song I ever wrote that she said that about. From then on the song seemed blessed - Carol’s pronouncement was echoed by everyone who heard it - the band, the producer, Peter Dawkins, the head of EMI, who we were signed to. In rehearsals and then the recording of it, everything came easily, as if the song was using all of us to realise itself - it was the strangest thing. It had a momentum all of its own. And when it went out, everybody picked it up and ran with it, from audiences to radio. Problem is, I, the writer, just cannot hear the magic of the song. For sure, I can hear a nice song - but I can’t hear the magic. Over a couple of wines a friend of mine even tried to point it out one night, saying “… it’s when your voice goes up, and the bass does this, and the chords change, and … fuck mate, it’s amazing … and the outro …” And I thought I could see it, but then I couldn’t. But it’s been like an angel to me, in the life I’ve lead. Each time I’ve been broke, or stuck somewhere, it leans down from the sky and scatters a little money to help me out … and my life stumbles on. So it is a magical song … I just wish I could hear that magic. More on Roger Wells See Roger Wells’ website. Roger. Hope it throws you a few bob here and there, but it clearly transcends materialIty. This is your "Flame Trees" but far better because its so more evocative. More so than you'd think possible for we 60 somethings who remembered Telegrams! I love it as do millions. You gave birth to a beautiful Aussie song - be proud mate. People will sing this and enjoy it long after we're dust which is only fitting. To your health mate!
Out of tragedy came beauty. I emigrated to S Australia in '86 after living with Aussie in London for 3 years. I was introduced to this song early on and I've loved it ever since. Thank you.

Some schools went on excursions in its heyday day. I went as an adult about a year before it closed. The actors put on a good show but the writing was on wall from the lack of upkeep of the structures.
I went to Old Sydney Town on a school excursion. The main thing I remember was how expensive everything was - the only thing I could afford as a momento was a small candle from the candlemaker. And there wasn’t much to do, I saw everything there was to see in like 20 minutes.
I went to Old Sydney Town on a school excursion too. They truly were the good old days. Walking down to the corner shop to get a chocolate paddle pop, my sister would always get the banana flavor. Such a special time
Aussie and NZ music truly had a glory period in the 80's. I actually feel sorry for people overseas who will never know the quality of music we had at the time.
Luckily with streaming services like Spotify, we Americans have much better access to music like this than we used to. Trouble is, far too many Americans are too lazy to seek it out or look for it. I've never set foot in Oz or NZ (unfortunately)! Back in the late 70s and into the 80s some Aussie bands and musicians like Little River Band, INXS, AC/DC, Midnight Oil, Icehouse, Kylie Minogue, Pseudo Echo, and Men at Work were able to crack the US market. I loved all that stuff and I've been listening to Aussie and Kiwi bands pretty steadily for about 15-20 years. It started when an online friend of mine recommended Hunters & Collectors when I was in college back in the 90s and over time I discovered bands like 1927, Cold Chisel, Mi-Sex, Dragon, Australian Crawl, Noiseworks, The Masters Apprentices, Little Heroes, Matt Finish, Wendy Matthews, Renee Geyer, Vanessa Amorosi, Rogue Traders, Th' Dudes, Hello Sailor, Delta Goodrem, Goanna, Do Re Mi, The Black Sorrows, Redgum, Yothu Yindi, Russell Morris, ZOOT, Swanee, The Party Boys, Darryl Braithwaite, Eurogliders, Cat Empire, Sherbet, and the Skyhooks to name a handful. These days I probably listen to more Aussie and Kiwi music than I do American music.
Darrin Matteson Mate, I was 5 years old in 1980 in Sydney! This music was everything I absorbed as a kid! If you could only comprehend my dysfunctional upbringing -an Hispanic immigrant kid fully immersing myself in this incredible music off the day! I didn’t start singing til I was 12 years old....was definitely what influenced to pursue music! Glad you appreciate our Aussie and obviously brilliant kiwi music 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽
Fuck this is a top song! Not sure what got me looking it up again, just popped into my head for some reason but glad it did. A lost gem from a little known Aussie band.

I watched the love of my life disappear to England for a year, many years ago. I sang this down the phone to her while she cried in a phone booth in London. It was never the same but this song still lets me have the moment again.
Oh mad that’s bad. This song haunted me when I was a child for some reason. 22 years later I left a woman in another country and came home. Many regrets
The greatest era was the 70's. John Mellencamp, Bob Seger and the Silver Bullitt Band, Rolling Stones, Don McLean, INXS, Suzie Quatro, ABBA, Dire Straits, Bee Gees, Earth, Wind & Fire, America, Queen, Gloria Gaynor, Linda Ronstadt, Marvin Gaye, The Supremes, Diana Ross, Aretha Franklin, Olivia Newton-John, Johnny Farnham, AC/DC, Rod Stewart, Elton John, Elvis Presley, David Bowie etc, etc, etc. Without any doubt the late 60's through to the early 80's was the greatest era of music including R&R which is now almost non existent.
This song always manages to make me cry - especially as I currently live in the UK with no sign of being able to return home to Australia just yet. Yes - it's still raining here in England (not all the time though!) and me over here - no I'm not happy here right now :( x
Im here in Perth and this perfect day..my birthday..my son rang and yeah, its still raining there in London, where hes been stuck for 579 days and has no way home yet either. I hope your perfect day comes soon x

On my list of immaculate tracks. The qualifying condition is that they could not be bettered given the technology available at the time of recording. Apart from that, this is one damn fine song and it needs to be heard more.
I was so lucky to grow up in Sydney in the 70s & 80s when the pub rock scene was so vibrant and the quality of the artists that you could see regularly every week was mind blowing. Sadly since then live music has become a rarity rather than available every weekend and everywhere!
Yes. That is what I did in 1984 onwards. Crawl around Sydney pubs on Fridays and Satday nights - then land up in Kings Cross with a bottle and sat down in a group of people I did not know. And share the bottle. Can't imagine doing it now.
Wow. Last time I heard this there really still _was_ the occasional perfect day in my life. Alas, not anymore. The 80s were the best times ever. Too bad you don't learn to appreciate them until they're well and truly over.

I saw The Angels at The Raffles Hotel in Perth about 84. We were packed in like sardines. I remember thinking if there's a fire we're all dead. It was so loud in such a packed smallish venue you could feel the vibrations going through your body. I worked as a receptionist and on the Monday at work (after the Saturday night show) my hearing was so temporarily inpaired I couldn't hear anyone all day on the phone. Unforgettable 80s. Loved it !!!
I'm 52 now, still a good looking man . I've been riddled with addiction problems on and off my whole life. This song makes me imagine I'm walking down a beach, hand and hand with my beautiful woman my 1 and only pure love of life, that would be my one perfect day. It's still possible, somewhere here on an Australian beach.
And I woke up this morning. And this song was once again plaing in my head. I came to Oz in 1983, landed up in Sydney and listened to all the bands mentioned here. Two other bands I would like to add are AC/DC and LRB. In fact, I drive over Little River when I go visit friends. Yes, the heyday of OZ music. 👍
I turned 20 a few days ago, I thought I'd grow out of the feeling i get when I listen to all mum and dads music, that I was born in the wrong generation and I tell ya, I'll probably always feel it. I can really only imagine how it was, a whole lot of perfect days it seems.
I worked on the video in '82....filmed in Adelaide by Scott Hicks.... Ah, memories. great stuff......remember this on Countdown when in year 10. All the words come back.
One of my favourite songs.... I can remember hearing it on the ferry from East Brisbane to the city when it first came out. I can't understand why this group didn't go on to major success.
This song was piping through our shopping mall when I was shopping with my daughter and grandchildren yesterday. I told her how much I loved this song when I was young. A lady my age heard me say it and said "Me too". Beautiful song, beautiful memories!!
I just heard this in the supermarket. I thought fk. I knew every word. I'm 50. What happened to Little Heroes??? My adult daughter told me it was Bowie. I set her straight and can't believe that long has passed. All my records and cassettes have sadly disappeared over the years. Thank God for music in supermarkets.
He sounds like a piece of his heart has been taken away from him and is now in England with the person he's singing to. Such a romantic song never gets old, remains compelling.
I remember listening to this at school singing along with my best friend, he's dead now but today for some reason I couldn't get out of my head. It was like being back at school listening to this with My mate. I love ya Kev wherever you are , this ones for you .
@@themillwall442 Thank you Nick, Im tearing up he was only 42 & he left 6 kids behind. I miss him so much you really only have one true best friend not "all my friends are my best friend '" which millennials say . Thanks again mate .
Great memories 💖.. Can't beat 80s music, when times were simpler and people seemed ... happier 😊... Little Heroes were a top band, very underrated ... I listened to their "Play By Numbers" album over and over ...and can never forget the unique song "He Wondered What It's Like To Be Her Cat" lol 😀
Wow this is lovely I honestly wish they had been known in the UK this is the first time I've heard this. Goanna was another one and 1927. I have only just come across them. I love the Aussie bands.
Effing bloody well good music , Brilliantly conceived and well sung, ...it makes you want to toss it all aside phone up your closest friends and head out for a splendid day grab some food and wine and go have a perfect day !

I reckon the early 80s was the high water mark of Aussie music, mainstream and alternative, and this was one of the best best pop hits of the era.
This magic song brings tears to eyes and shivers to my back; it could only be Australian . .
Glad I grew up too the best music of all time.
I recall Peter Garrett mocking it at a LaTrobe Uni concert early ‘80’s. I was a big Oils fan back then. But now, I reckon I’d rather listen to this.
Peter Garrett was always a wanker.
Peter Garrett. Pretender who came from the most privilged school in Australia. One Perfect Jerk!
Garrett proved he is a fraud. Locals in Balmain used to spit if they saw him in the street. Fact.
We will all be listening to this lovely song when the floods have gone.
I'm an X pat Aussie in Wales and I can tell you it's bloody raining here again!!!
Was just used at a friend's funeral. Absolutely perfect. Ripper song!
Magic era in Australian music, wish I’d been old enough to go out and see likes of INXS...cold chisel...Australian crawl and the angels at this time
I saw The Angels at The Raffles Hotel in Perth about 84.
I saw them..... It was as amazing as you can imagine
@@blackkittens. ,, I met my wife at an Angels concert in 1996. Love of my life.
@@jurgentreue1200 Wow.........memorable AND meaningful, excellent !!
@@blackkittens. great aussie rock seems to be gone now sadly. They were great days.
True brother, dont give up the search 😊🇦🇺🦘
Ask Jesus sir.
You just know what good decent music is thats all👌😊
Stay young life goes quick
You are already ahead of the pack with that comment cobber! Go hard and follow your dreams AND have plenty of perfect days!
I worked on the video in '82....filmed in Adelaide by Scott Hicks.... Ah, memories.

The same year of the movie freedom
Unsung heroes 80s the best
Stunning song brings back memories of when I was 11 years old
We will meet again in the spirit world. One perfect day. God bless you Eddie Lee.
One of my favourite songs.... I can remember hearing it on the ferry from East Brisbane to the city when it first came out. I can't understand why this group didn't go on to major success.
Underrated song big time, simply brilliant, still love it
This is such a beautiful song! Spirits me back to my 20s! Halcyon times.
This song was piping through our shopping mall when I was shopping with my daughter and grandchildren yesterday. I told her how much I loved this song when I was young. A lady my age heard me say it and said "Me too". Beautiful song, beautiful memories!!
How good was ausie music in this time
This song is still brilliant 👏 👌
I just heard this in the supermarket. I thought fk. I knew every word. I'm 50. What happened to Little Heroes??? My adult daughter told me it was Bowie. I set her straight and can't believe that long has passed. All my records and cassettes have sadly disappeared over the years. Thank God for music in supermarkets.
I just posted the exact same thing - heard it again in the supermarket! Your post is 3 years old, mine June 22. Great songs just never die.
@@luciadaley3661 You're right! They don't.
I was working at Coles in Hornsby NSW when this first came out. It was the best days and years of my life. Stephscheve
OMG! I'd forgotten this song! I'd give anything to be able to go back to 1980s in Australia.
Camping, beach days, no dictators running the country, b4 this bs corrupt grubberment...ahh yes innocent childhoods 😢😢
Brings back so many memories of the days when I was really happy. I saw the band a few times and had their albums. Roger was a truly nice guy.
This took me AGES to track down but it was one of my faves as a kid in the 80s. Anyone else here in late 2019? :)
One of my faves too... it came out just as a very special person went home to England...
Alexandra Popovic, I love this song too. I’m here, locked down in 2020. Still dreaming of that perfect day.
He sounds like a piece of his heart has been taken away from him and is now in England with the person he's singing to. Such a romantic song never gets old, remains compelling.
One perfect song.
2020 and revisiting old music like this just reminds me Australian music was great back then
I turned 17 in 82 , the music was bloody good
If you ever come back, just drop by, one perfect day . .
An underrated gem, gets better with each listen.
I’m always homesick for Oz when I hear this! 2020! 25 years away...
I used to play this on the jukebox in the 747 bar at Wynyard station complete with plane seats in Sydney in the early 80'.Those were the days.
Thanks for your SONG
GOD bless everyone
Barakallah fiikum 😂😂❤❤❤❤
WHILE IN MY WORKSHOP MY STEREO USB EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE LANDED ON THIS SONG. STOPPED ME IN MY TRACKS I HAVNT STOPPED PLAYING IT SINCE.....WHAT A SONG!!

WHEN AUSSIE MUSIC WAS TELLING IT FROM THE HEART THE ISOLATION FACTOR .
Hayden Wittig tyyggggggggggggggg
I have always loved this beautiful, nostalgic song. I had no idea it was Australian - from my home town of Melbs, no less! ❤
I want the late 70s / early 80s back ... i miss you lol :'(
I remember listening to this at school singing along with my best friend, he's dead now but today for some reason I couldn't get out of my head.
1982 Year 8 high school, small town country NSW - on comes 'One Perfect Day'....
Another random song that just got stuck in my head today.
Who knows Why ???
But at least this time it was a song I like 🤗🤗
Great song, I loved the 80's, wish i could go back.
1982, I was 17, got my first motorcycle. Where has the time gone.
Amen, brother. You and me both.
Ye we sure did live through some of the best songs ever, what an era😄
Absolutely love this song. Top 10 all time classic.
What the hell... I have not heard this song for 20 + years.... and I know it word for word... here in ... England ...
Wow this is lovely I honestly wish they had been known in the UK this is the first time I've heard this. Goanna was another one and 1927. I have only just come across them. I love the Aussie bands.
One perfect day in the early 80's. Luv this song.
one of my all time fav songs

Thanks to NZOZ for his awesome channels and collection of old school tunes ....
I can't believe this is 40 years old,I play this song when Iam in a reflective mood and to lift me when I feel down.
Riding my Mongoose to the arcades to hit the spacies with my mates and this comes on. I long for those days.
Right on!!!! Loved those days, Id play Donkey Kong and Galaga. Spend all the 20 cent pieces I had on me, then ride home...
Great memories.
