    The Angelfish Tank is a week old. Well just over by the time you are seeing this. We did not get off to the flying start that I'd hoped for but that was to be expected. High stocking, high lighting and high waste all contributing. Also, a few other things I'm not too happy with that we sort out to allow things progress further down the track.

      @@MDFishTanks I had 3 tanks that kept having cyanobacteria problems.
      Funny you called the cyanobacteria cyanoacrylate, you glue more than you deal with cyanobacteria. 😆
      I discovered a link between TDS and the cyanobacteria. High TDS ==> growing cyanobacteria, even in established tanks.
      So I bought a Zero Filter (doesn't waste any water like RO does) and use zero TDS water to top off tanks, and Mmiller2021 in the Aquarium Co-op Forum helped fine tune my ferts.
      A little H2O2 took care of the stubborn little bits of cyanobacteria on plants.🤷‍♂️
      Keep my TDS

    I love that you always show when things don't go perfectly and let people think you never have any issues.
    Also, from my experience with them, I think you would have your angels out and about and exploring a lot more with lower flow in the tank. Mine stopped hiding in one single corner immediately when I diffused mine.

    I learned some time ago that if you have a white substrate you have a job for life. The only time it looks good is the first week that you have it, after that it is a constant battle to keep it clean.

    • @THandP_org
      @THandP_org 2 роки тому

      I think white sand is great for the underwater waterfall effect, where an uplift tube is hidden behind rocks, and the white sand is lifted with an air stone and then dumped out to tumble down the rocks.
      Otherwise, it's a pita.

    • @andystokes8702
      @andystokes8702 2 роки тому

      @@THandP_org Yes, white sand will work perfectly well for this application. It is constantly on the move and no algae will grow on it and ne detritus will settle on it. That's not the same as with a static substrate.

    Hey MD, great looking tank but just a quick FYI, angels don't like strong currents and seems like that filter produces a pretty strong one. That's why they seem to be hudling all at the back of the tank. Consider reducing the flow a bit and they'll be much happier.

    Thank you for trouble-shooting videos like this. It's so easy to get the impression that you do these incredible aquascapes, dump in hundreds of fish and they live happily ever after with the only maintenance cutting back forest-size loads of plants. You are AWESOME!

    The aquascape looks amazing. But, Angelfish and the tetras come from more black water systems. That may be why the Angels are hiding a lot. They need some sunglasses 😎, lol!

    I've been successfully treating cyanobacteria with daily doses of lactobacillus. I dose at 1ml per 10 gallons and the lactobacillus will outcompete the cyanobacteria. Plus the Lacto is great for the fish! I dose when I feed in hopes that more of the Lacto gets into their digestive system. I try to avoid using meds when I can🤙

    Nice watch and I feel like a good way to show there is no ‘perfect start’ or ‘perfect tank’ it is always just work and you have to find where the balance is missing. Thanks to your videos really I started off into planted tanks with deep substrate and I can safely say I have a balance aquarium at 15g that only needs top offs because the plants and substrate can handle the bio-load super well.

    Cyanobacteria is - in 99% of the time - linked to (too) much light an phosphate imbalance. If you can't change the light or want to black out the tank for a few days, I'd advise checking the phosphae levels in the tank.

    Hey, I always thought a tank this size and stock would pretty much always need a canister filter? Seems that's just a powerhead and a very small amount of mechanical sponges? I'm happy to be proven wrong as I'm looking at a 140 litre and actually don't have space for an external (but hate big chunky internals). Ta!

    Wonderfully inspiring video… as always. One thing I still don’t understand is the relationship between floating plants taking up nutrients and the stem plant getting enough nutrients. Is there a danger of removing all the nutrients from the water and the stem plants being deprived?

    Hi, I would really like to try making one of these for my apartment or for my parents home as we had fish tanks growing up but they had all the filters and biweekly cleaning the tank and monthly change in the water; so this looks like a fun activity to do without having to worry about wasting water, excessive cleaning and elbow grease. So my question for you is how do these tanks do when exposed to sunlight, because I see almost all of your tanks are inside and away from sunlight.

    • @vEGan1909

      Sunlight will probably cause algae 🤔

    I LOVE your videos and your aquariums. You do a masterful job! May I ask how you deal with thread algae? I cannot eliminate it from my aquarium. I use a toothbrush daily to sort of pull and twist it from my stem plants. I have also cut the plants way back, but it always returns.
    Thanks, MD!

      Maybe you have too much light

  • @truthfactreality6814
    @truthfactreality6814 2 роки тому +1

    Lower the lighting and get a surface skimmer. Try an aquael internal filter turbo 2000 so you can use some biomedia.

    • @MDFishTanks
      @MDFishTanks  2 роки тому +3

      for me, I find the better solution is to keep the lighting high, and get those plants growing crazy. It literally sorts out all issues like you can see on the rainbowfish tank.

    • @truthfactreality6814
      @truthfactreality6814 2 роки тому

      @@MDFishTanks it’s about the balance. Definitely another filter would be of benefit too I think.

    • @MDFishTanks
      @MDFishTanks  2 роки тому +7

      @@truthfactreality6814 im not sure why you say that though? look at the rainbowfish aquarium and the rare fish aquarium. both have the same filtration. So def don't need another filter as they are proving. The point of a filter is to hold biological media (and flow). I've got so much substrate in all these tanks that they have more biological filtration than any filter is going to hold and plenty of flow from that one internal powerhead. Why do you think I would need another filter?

    • @truthfactreality6814
      @truthfactreality6814 2 роки тому

      @@MDFishTanks the more water is moving the less algae you will get. Also the angel tank isn’t as heavily planted. Check out novak work about how the biology works in aquariums. Once you know you don’t get big issues when starting tanks etc

    • @MDFishTanks
      @MDFishTanks  2 роки тому +3

      @@truthfactreality6814 have you seen the tanks in the san Francisco store? this guy has hundreds of tanks and says the key to no algae in any of them is minimal flow...There is no absolutes here, no 100% right ways. It's all about adjusting as you go and as the tank evolves. A bit like this one. It's had a hiccup, i'll adapt it (in the way that's working for me and I find most enjoyable, meaning really low tech) and go from there. With a process of elimination, I'll get it as balanced as all my other tanks in no time. 👍
