    Wow, great video of trying to keep lambs alive in the crazy amounts of rain and sleet. Have to say that your family is sure dedicated to their work. Hope the weather breaks sure and better days to come.

    For me, the UK and Ireland are behind in breeding tups with hardiness, get up and go, feed conversion in favour of tups that look good after being stuffed full of cake all year with big heads and square shoulders. That aside, it depends if the extra profit covers the lost lambs over say 5 years. Suffolks used to be good (30 years ago 😊) but I hear they are getting very dopey and slow to get going?

    • @sheepshepherd
      @sheepshepherd  Рік тому +2

      Absolutely. Suffolks are definitely gone back the last while. We are changing over to texel as we are getting better results with them. The nz Suffolk is supposed to be leaps ahead of te ones here. So I might try that out aswell

      @@sheepshepherd Think when the NZ farmers lost their subsidies it really concentrated their minds as to what’s important to keep costs down and profits up. I’d be tempted to go to someone who is using the genetics on a grass based system (plus scoring them) and trusting on their tups doing the business rather than looking good in the show ring. Just my thoughts.

      Exactly. They melt soon as they come home then. No good to the farmer

      Had a Suffolk a few years ago, great ram (although we were looking for the pricked earred ram) he was floppy earred but still a good framed and breeding ram but near his end with us he did go down hill quickly. So this year we bought a NZ Suffolk and definitely looks a better framed, lengthy ram, here's to hoping he was performing at tupping

    My grandpa (my dad’s dad) emigrated from Belfast, Ireland to America. I’ve never met my grandpa, Victor (also my dad’s name), due to his early passing from cancer. He died before I was born. I’ve never visited 🇮🇪 , but hope to eventually soon! 🐏🐑 That looks like a lot of work, but I pray it pays off.🙏🏼 I was supposed to visit Ireland in March of this year with my immediate family, but it never materialized. Greetings from Southern California. God bless!

    Here in Western Canada we don't see the moisture that you do for sure, but hardiness of lambs is important in our -40c weather. I'm having luck with Dorper ewes and Canadian Arcott rams
