It was pretty ridiculous too! I thought it was super cool and would tell people at school and I remember my uncle or somebody telling me that I should stop doing that lol. Also, it's such a weird book to read at that age. It's so self-consciously positioned with regards to the rest of the literary canon that it's a weird book to pick up if you hadn't already read Hamlet or the Odyssey... just to name a few! Definitely a good book club experience ;)
I just found your channel through your video on Penguin Essentials and I'm so glad to have stumbled upon you! A Canadian living in London and working at Waterstones? That's my ultimate dream! Thanks for giving me hope!
Have you ever had a circus phase? I could totally recommend you up! Was surprised when you said you're in the UK! Charity shops are the way forward for your cheap paperbacks here :)
Thank you for the compliment, I will take it whenever I can get it. Last year I got carded two separate times when I went to the movies. However, I rarely get carded for beer...that's because I order with confidence. I stay out of the sun and make UA-cam videos instead.
I love this video! Totally relate to needing a sense of accomplishment when you don't feel like accomplishing anything :P Love that you joined an old lady book club at 17, that's super cool!!
Thanks Dan! Yeah I feel like I annotate non-fiction because it feels as if it might be something I'll return to and if I want to quickly find interesting info I can just look at the underlined bits...now if only I could finish these non-fic tomes!!! :D
Cheers Katie! Yes Pride and Prejudice! Are you going to see the new Love and Friendship movie? (Which is actually lady susan, I know, what sort of craziness is this!)
I have seen it already! I quite liked it; I didn't find it quite as hilarious as the book but I did still enjoy it :) You? (I went to see it East Dulwich Picture House, which is such a gorgeous cinema)
Generally, yes. Even George R.R. Martin who was a bit curmudgeonly about me not having read Jack Vance. The only author I found a bit disappointing in person was Jennifer Egan -- she wasn't very friendly. Of course, she could've been jet lagged/having a bad day! Hbu?
Thanks! To be fair, I've read a good amount of Munro, Gallant, Richler, and Atwood but not enough Leonard Cohen or really contemporary writers. Who would you recommend? :D
I prefer mass market paperbacks the most too because I like to bring my book everywhere with me. I definitely do that if I like a book or movie I research everything about how that thing was made and research the author/director and just watch all of their interviews, it becomes a little obsessive for me though hahaha
Now we have all this information, all I need now is your social security number and your mothers maiden name. I don't read with my glasses either, it's just so nice to not have to wear them. No such thing as too many books (especially on vacation). I can't walk into a bookstore and not buy anything either, this is why I don't work in a bookstore
Haha you're too funny Michael! I wish I could read with my glasses on (it gives me a headache to do so!) cause then I would look my most bookish and pretentious on the tube :P
i share some of your facts...i can read without my glasses too! especially when I'm in bed. And the last fact, well... what can I say? books are great, and we need great things in our lives! ;)
Isn't it disappointing when your favorite author likes books you really dislike? I never really went in search of author recommendations but John Green sometimes mentions books he enjoyed and I read at least one solely because of his raving about it, and so did not like the book, just as well as some others he really liked. So I know not to trust him, but it also discourages me to look for authors as inspiration on what to read...
I used to turn to authors a lot more when I was younger. I think if they're talking about older books the safer bet they are. If they're talking about new publishing, I think they may just be trying to spread the love around. The fact that Stephen King blurbs so many people's books is just wonderful for young up and coming writers (I don't care if he doesn't even to get to the end of them). Though as a reader one needs to be careful!!!
Yay! Great video - hahahah I would have LOVED seeing you in that old-ladies book club! Aww little Tanner reading Ulysses with the mature set ^_^
It was pretty ridiculous too! I thought it was super cool and would tell people at school and I remember my uncle or somebody telling me that I should stop doing that lol. I can imagine heheh! But very cool to have read it at such young age regardless! :)
I just found your channel through your video on Penguin Essentials and I'm so glad to have stumbled upon you! A Canadian living in London and working at Waterstones? That's my ultimate dream! Thanks for giving me hope!
Ah! Thanks a bunch Val! There's always hope. I'm here on a European passport so I'm a bit nervous about the referendum at the moment. Fingers crossed!
Have you ever had a circus phase? I could totally recommend you up!
Was surprised when you said you're in the UK! Charity shops are the way forward for your cheap paperbacks here :)
I am not going to do a bookish facts but, in about 2 months...35 facts about me. So a little bit of everything will be included.
35 facts...cause you're turning 35??? (Though, tbh, I though you were in your twenties!) All the same, I can't wait to see this video!
Thank you for the compliment, I will take it whenever I can get it. Last year I got carded two separate times when I went to the movies. However, I rarely get carded for beer...that's because I order with confidence.

Thanks Leanne!!! Yeah Ulysses book club was a real game changer for me ;)
Awesome video, Jakob! It's funny, I also make annotations in non-fiction, but not in fiction. Also, Old Ladies Bookclub -- hahaha!
Thanks Dan! Yeah I feel like I annotate non-fiction because it feels as if it might be something I'll return to and if I want to quickly find interesting info I can just look at the underlined bits...now if only I could finish these non-fic tomes!!! :D
I also do the thing you mentioned as number 2. I am currently really getting into performance management in health care. Why? I have no idea.
Ooooh! What performance management books in health care can you recommend? :D
I have very much enjoyed Atul Gawande's stuff thus far! And there are some great articles online also.
Love your videos so much!!!!
Thank you so much dude! Hahaha yeah meeting JK Rowling was totally rad. Happy you enjoyed the story :D :D :D
So many brilliant facts! Hoorah for Pride and Prejudice :)
Cheers Katie! Yes Pride and Prejudice! Are you going to see the new Love and Friendship movie? (Which is actually lady susan, I know, what sort of craziness is this!)

Great video it was fun learning a bit more about you, I'll definitely be giving this tag a go soon it seems like a fun one to do =)
Please do! Can't wait to see your answers. Thanks :)
Great to know that I am not the only one who sees Venice in Camorr and vice versa!
Thanks for the tag! You've met some amazing authors - do they live up to your expectations?
Generally, yes. Even George R.R. Martin who was a bit curmudgeonly about me not having read Jack Vance. The only author I found a bit disappointing in person was Jennifer Egan -- she wasn't very friendly. Of course, she could've been jet lagged/having a bad day! Hbu?
Don't think I've ever met an author - must rectify this fact!
I don't wear my glasses when I read because I'm near sighted as well.
Great facts! I would strongly encourage you to read more Can Lit. I've been reading lots lately and I'm never disappointed!
Thanks! To be fair, I've read a good amount of Munro, Gallant, Richler, and Atwood but not enough Leonard Cohen or really contemporary writers. Who would you recommend? :D
Great facts. I especially enjoyed the castle book collection, because you know, how much is too much when you like a thing? :D
Castle books very important. Same with pirates, magicians, and boxers...crazy phases! :P Thanks for watching :)
I prefer mass market paperbacks the most too because I like to bring my book everywhere with me. I definitely do that if I like a book or movie I research everything about how that thing was made and research the author/director and just watch all of their interviews, it becomes a little obsessive for me though hahaha
I'm with you on the obsessiveness. I'll buy books just for another author's introduction!
When I worked in retail hell (walmart) I tried to start a book club, but all the participants wanted to read was Nora Roberts... so gha
ahahaha...maybe one Nora Roberts would be okay (maybe, I haven't read her) but month to month that would be terrible/ridiculous!! :P
Now we have all this information, all I need now is your social security number and your mothers maiden name. I don't read with my glasses either, it's just so nice to not have to wear them. I'm not around people when I read, so don't need to be pretentious :P
I've read The World According to Garp, White Oleander, The hours, and The Great Gatsby all two times each.
I've been meaning to re-read Garp! I loved it when I read it as a teenager :D
I love your 25th fact -- I hope you get a discount! I think it's awesome that you've met J.K. Rowling! Great tag!
Thanks!! Yeah I do get a discount. It's amazing :D :D :D :D But also horrible because it only feeds my addiction :P
I'm short sighted too! I wear contact lenses mostly :)
I cannot believe you met Jo Rowling.
It was amazing. We shook hands!!! :P
i share some of your facts...i can read without my glasses too! especially when I'm in bed. And the last fact, well... what can I say? books are great, and we need great things in our lives! ;)
Yeah reading with glasses hurts my head!!! Yes books are important, will never stop buying them :D
The JK Rowling story was the best!
