I remember as a kid hearing about a news story that someone at a Mr Sub had put worms on someone’s sub. Even as a kid it didn’t make sense to me, how would someone not notice worms in their sandwich? I later learned it was sperm, not worms.
Every now and then the stars align, unicorns frolic in a field of clover, and bigfoot and the loch ness monster sit for tea . . . . AND a band achieves musical brilliance. This is one of those truly perfect songs. Such a cool chord progression and groove, great playing, great singing, AND interesting and thought-provoking lyrics.
25 years and this classic is still amazing. Hadn't seen the video in forever and was dumbfounded to find it today. Thank you for uploading it, guys. Apparently I was supposed to sit in on drums with you for a show back in late '96 - early '97. A girl from my high school asked me, I said yes, never saw or heard from her ever again, lol. Oh well, still a fan.
Was at the release party for this album at the Horseshoe (I think)… my friend dragged me along. He was a big Soap Bubble and Kicking fan, I wasn’t, just tagged along for the beers. He left unimpressed, I left a fan! Love this album and this song.
I found this song while watching a documentary called Ski Bums.. It is set to some awesome powder skiing in Whistler BC. If you ever get the chance check it out. Love this song!
2023 and I still hear this on POWER97 in Winnipeg...This morning was a real treat for me as they played "Watching the Girl" and I just about parked my truck to listen to it...but, I was on the highway and miles from my next stop, so I just cranked it!!!
This the band every musician wanted to be part of... The energy and the sound just makes you want to crawl in and wrap that sonic blanket around you and sing! Love these guys and soo glad I found them before I die as this is what is missing in AMERICA right now...Music and Harmony.
Fun fact - the singer's shirt said something like "girly man" on the original video and it was later edited out - you can still see remnants of the lettering on parts (like at 1:34 )
If you were in Vancouver in the late 90s you probably heard this on the radio at least 200 billion times. It's a bit Jane's addictionish in the vocal but pretty cool tho actually. The heroin references are pretty overt.
Any chance to upload the original video with the uncensored "Girly Boy" shirt? I've also been hoping for a CD reissue of all the albums. I tried ordering the Sold for a Smile CD years ago but it was the US version.
What's with the solo/interlude in this and the recently re added versions to streaming music sites. Sounds way different than what I used to always hear on the radio?
@@thegandharvasofficial oh okay cool ya I am actually from London would always hear that Canadian mix on FM96. Love that we can listen to your guys stuff again :D thank you for the music!
The spoken word outro is also different. Same lyrics and delivery, but way more prominent over the music, I think. The other mix made it sound more organic to the performance, if that makes sense. This one definitely sounds like the outro was added in post, maybe from a different recording session. I definitely prefer the Canadian mix, but that could just be familiarity.
@@michaelccozens I have the original CD release of this album, bought just days after the release party at the Horseshoe Tavern (which I was at)… the spoken word outro is exactly the same except on the album version the chorus behind immediately fades out and it’s just spoken word plus instrumental.
1997 I was working at Mr. Sub with this song always on the radio, It doesn't get more Canadian than that
Mr. Submarine IS THE BEST! I haven't been to a Subway in over 20 years!!
I remember as a kid hearing about a news story that someone at a Mr Sub had put worms on someone’s sub. Even as a kid it didn’t make sense to me, how would someone not notice worms in their sandwich? I later learned it was sperm, not worms.
This is the most Canadian thing ever posted.
Haha this is awesome
I was likely served by you drunk AF. It was a damn fine sub.
Heard them for the first time on Y108, can’t get enough of this track now
Toronto never so fine. We miss you
This is a definite staple for me, I’ve listened to this right from the start. 😎🖤 rtfo🖖🏽
One of the best bands of the 90s. Living in Buffalo growing up, thank God for CFNY. Super underrated.

such a LONG riff too. I love long riffs.
This got a lot of radio play in 1998. I thought it was a Perry Farrell song at first. Good memories!
Yea, likewise...then I find out they are a bunch of dudes from my hometown of London Ontario
I thought so too!
FM96 Nineties At Noon helped me discover this awesome song and band 🤘
The Gandharvas is the Canadian Blind Melon.
I remember these guys when they were little kids rocking Call the Office when they were the Droogs
Same, they were friends with my friends who were part of the local music scene.
from Ontario here, close to London, proud Canadian! Still remember when this incredible song was on MuchMusic -- Gandharvas forever! So, so Good.
I absolutely love this song! This music video gave me the courage to dance lol it really did tho

this song is what i listen to when im down its powerful
Ive been looking for this video for years
This music stands the test of time. That section of the Gardiner Expressway didn't.
This is actually a great song

Soap Bubble was SO overrated. People LOVE First Day of Spring but I always liked this one and Watching the Girl better
I found this song while watching a documentary called Ski Bums.. It is set to some awesome powder skiing in Whistler BC. If you ever get the chance check it out. Love this song!
I heard this on the radio about 3-4 weeks ago and today it was playing in my head... took about 40 mins to find this and exercise the ear worm 8D

Loved this song so much playing Ultima Online, Quake, DAoC, Age of Empires as a teenager in 98-2002 :) heck, im STILL listening to it yearly :)
I actually really like Paul's dancing.
OMG! I have been dyyyyying to see this video again!!! Oh what a trip down memory lane. This is such a feel-good track and video.

Listening to this whilst working Paul in rural BC as a geologist.
I used to watch this video online in the late 90s/early 2000s (not sure what website), glad it’s finally on UA-cam
The radio and that one year of NHL by EA brought me here.
Whaaaaaat?! Did they use Downtime in that game? What year?! No one tells us anything. 😆 either way, thanks for being here.
Ugh now I can't find what year it was on! I could have sworn this song was on one of them.
Revised on my birthday!
90’s smoking con hanging out at westney plaza eating donuts from Hollywood ✌️ ❤️ 🇨🇦
Ha ha ha, amazing
Seen these guys live with the doughboys..fuckn great live show
Aw hell yeah! I've been searching for this for years!
YAY!
Will any of the Gandharvas albums ever be released on vinyl ?? Need them all!!!!!
I’ve never actually heard any of these guys’ music. I really like this song, great lyrics and a talented band.
I'm getting Shannon Hoon vibes from this guy
Not at all
I swear there was a version of this video where Paul's t-shirt wasn't censored. Curious about the story behind that.
Yes, his shirt said “girlie boy” which was far too risqué for the music industry-types back in the nineties...
@@thegandharvasofficial ohhh man haha. amazing
I remembered that version playing on MuchMusic and wondered whether I'd imagined it when I saw this. Thanks for clarifying @thegandharvasofficial!
Hell yea !
🍻🍻🍻🍻

that 'REN' tag tho... sign of the times.
🤘🏻
Singer has been working as a geologist for quite a few years now; no surprise, talented at geology too :D

Local

The US and Canadian releases of Sold For A Smile had slightly different mixes. The version on the streaming sites is the US album version!

Thw first band of Eric Howden, now Raised by swans
This, and Eric's occasional work with Bobnoxious from around the same period.
@@michaelccozens you have videos or somethimg of that?
I just don't get it...todays music pales in comparison to just about any music from before.
THe other version/mix is so much better, this weird American mix is odd.
Say what? What other mix.
Love this song! First saw it on MuchMusic back in the day.
