Look up "The Holy Gift." It's the Lateralus album in the correct order according to the Fibonacci Sequence...because math. It'll put a whole new perspective on things.
Fun fact: about the track "Mantra": The sound for this unusual short instrumental was created by Tool lead singer Maynard James Keenan's cat, at least according to Keenan. The sound is actually Maynard's cat being squeezed and the resulting sound slowed down to create the low-pitched noise. He says it was a gentle squeeze - no animals were harmed in the making of "Mantra." Greetings from Paraguay
When she says it sounds "simplistic or minimalistic", i think she means sometimes their tracks start out with only an instrument or 2 then slowly builds up.
I remember being 20 when Schism first dropped. ANEMA and Lateralus will always defining albums of my youth. I always thought of the album as 'Communication' and evolving to be able to communicate. Anema/Lateralus follow the same formula. You'll see how things like Ticks match the feeling of Hooker...or Reflection is the massive long, progressive, closer like Third Eye with an ending message.
10k Days does have a similar formula and an overall theme. It's literally about the many years of pain his mother went through before she died, and the Christian faith that got her through it, even though he himself rejected it, and the conflict that created within him. It also touches on his overall misanthropic feelings, his disgust at human behaviour ect. I think the weird ending track is a thing they carried through. It has some absolutely epic tracks on it, and incredible production. Their lsst album did nothing for me, but 10k Days is an incredible album rejected by many hard-core fans. It's Tools Black Album, it was polished, well written, creative, a band at their peak, but too commercial for the old school fans, just like with Metallica. But it was a massive success nonetheless. But come on, Rosetta Stoned has to be one of the most mesmerising and intriguing tracks ever made, and leaves you wondering whether the whole Tool project was actually an elaborate troll that got out of hand. Absolutely epic piece of work either way. And The Pot is an absolutely monstrous track. And what about the beauty of the Wing's/10,000 Days thing together? There's nothing like those tracks. The material isn't as dense and complex, and has more of a focus on production, but man is that album a mesmerising piece of work. But I love all the albums except the latest.
If you really never heard Tool, starting with Lateralus is a bit rough imo. It's like going to master class before undergrad. You can do it, but you miss the evolution which i feel is a bit stiffer than the evolution Deftones goes through where I feel like starting out of order is fine.
Schism always felt like Tool's version of Kashmir by Led Zeppelin. In that it's long, repetitive, seemingly simple, but layered, complex and progressive. It's easily consumed by the masses but still gives us metal heads something to drool over.
Interludes and TOOL: pretty much any time there's an interlude, there's an easter egg to find. On Ænima, the interludes can be arranged and overlayed on Forty-Six and 2 for an enhanced song experience. The same can be done with the album after Lateralus, 10,000 Days. On this album there are alternate track orders that completely rearrange the interludes based in numerology. The latest album has some conspicuous durations that suggest a hidden track but to date, I'm not aware that one has been discovered.
Tool has said the intended order is the track list and there’s no overlays secret songs or alternate orders. Sayin It’s released as is or they’d have put it there that way and it’s over thinking
Loved your reaction! When anyone says minimalistic or simplistic about Tool I believe it is such a compliment. They manage to make such complex arrangements flow so well.
YES, THIS!!! Seems like some people have misinterpreted my compliment of calling their music minimalistic as a criticism. I love how their sound is so layered, it creates great music!
@@mollyesanborn They are prog rock. And I hate prog if it's pretentious. But they managed to take weird and complicated offbeat prog elements that normally turn people off and make them sound simple, almost primal. There's something that speaks to your animalistic side, and yet they provoke deep thoughts and strange, inexplicable emotions too. Tool is an almost spiritual experience. You don't even notice the bizarre time signatures and near impossible rhythmic elements, or the dissonance, nor the way the bass plays leads while the guitar takes the place of bass, while the drums are almost disconnected at times. You don't notice because it's hypnotic and has a groove even though nobody can follow that groove. Truly an incredible band. They don't do weird prog stuff for the sake of it, or to show off, they do it to serve the music, to enhance the experience. And they do it with subtlety.
I remember one of my bands I was in at the time this album was released, covered the Grudge at a house party. The whole party stopped to watch us. That never happens.
My personal favorite album ever lol Simplistic wow ? Mantra is a cat purr slowed down. 6 and 7 are 1 song. Disposition/Reflection is an experience you need to have on mushies it's amazing life changing actually 01 tour baby! lol
No idea that was a cat purr slowed down on Mantra! That's pretty cool. By simplistic I just meant that they seemed to use a lot of minimalistic instrumentals, but the way they layer everything to create nuances in their sound is definitely anything but simplistic!
This album is great! Also a huge fan of Deftones! I also highly recommend Hybrid Theory by Linkin Park, definitely a different style from Tool or Deftones but is great in its own right. Keep up the good work!
Aaaa THE best album in music period… I remember the first time I listened to it I only like Parabola and Ticks & Leeches. Of course I grew to love it all with all my heart track by track. I also practice Yoga to this album. Amazing ❤️
Yes u need 2 know the songs are kinds joined songs example Track 1 is singular Track 2-3 joined Track 4-5 joined Track 6-7 joined Track 8 singular Track 9 singular Tracks 10-11-12 triple Track 13 trippy interlude
IMHO Ticks & Leeches is the most Deftones-sounding song in Tool's catalogue. The quiet/loud "suck me dry" section in the middle of the song wouldn't sound out of place at all on a Deftones album.
Idk if anyone mentioned it (or if you already knew) but Lateralus was written using the Fibonacci sequence. They also have a song on their latest album where the exact middle of the song hits during the word mitosis, which if you didn’t know, is a cell dividing into 2 (I swear I don’t want to be condescending 😂) These guys are math gods 😂😂
So, the audio in "Faaip de Oiad" was from an actual radio broadcast. That was from a 1997 episode of the late night talk show called Coast to Coast AM, and the stranger thing is the man (who called into the show) "stopped" when the radio station's transmitter went dead. When the station came back, the man was gone, and both the host, Art Bell, and the next call were confused, to say the least
My 2 fav comments… “they’re doing a Deftones thing” and “He kind of sounds like the singer from Chevelle” 😂😂😂😂 I’m literally watching all of your reactions… Awesome job, the way you break down songs is amazing! Love to have you do my bands album!
Absolutely my favorite album from Tool. The title track never fails to give me goosebumps!!!! Hearing it live was an absolutely life changing experience too.
Triad always reminded me of Ravel’s Bolero. Instead of a middle eastern caravan approaching, passing by and then receding, it’s mad crazy machines coming towards you and then moving off.
Yeah they're a trip live, but you may or may not get to even see Maynard during the show lol. Last time I saw them he was singing back behind the drums wearing some kind of helmet.
If you want as close to a religious experience as you can get at a rock concert having Tool play Disposotion/Reflection/Triad at an outdoor ampitheatre when a thunderstorm starts. Watch the weather chamge...
Hey so... Chino from Deftones fronted a side project band called Palms, it is the band members from a completely incredible band called Isis. I'd recommend listening to their albums Oceanic and Panopticon, then listening to Chino sing for the band members on Palms. I love your channel, I'm so grateful there are young women like you into interesting heavy music, 30 years ago, maybe like now, I don't know but you'd have been a rare flower.
Yes, I can't wait to check Palms out! I've heard Chino's other two side projects Team Sleep and Crosses and really enjoyed both of them, so I'm really intrigued to hear Palms too. And Isis has been on my list for a while, quite a few people have suggested their music. I didn't realize they were in Palms though, that's cool! Glad you're enjoying the channel. I'm so glad that I'm discovering all of this fantastic music :)
@@mollyesanborn I hope you won't be disappointed, I think Isis is something special, the combination made something I think is pretty wonderful. Have a great night or morning wherever you are! Thanks again for the free entertainment and getting to share these records through fresh ears :)
I kind wished it was done in chronological order, but eh, what can ya do? Either way, Ya can’t go wrong with tool! But Tool and Deftones are one of my fave bands of all time alongside Radiohead and a few others.
Interesting story about Faaip De Oiad: The phone call was from a conspiracy theorist who called a radio station on September 11th 1997. He claimed that he worked at Area 51 and that aliens were living with us on the Earth. I believe there was also something about the aliens plotting to attack major cities to gain control of the world or something around those lines. Suddenly during the call the radio station suddenly went off air for over an hour and no exact cause of that was ever found. The thing that makes this track weird for me is that fact that it's the 13th track (13 being an unlucky number), the call happened on September 11th and was talking about attacking cities, AND the album came out in 2001. When I first listened through the album this track caught me off guard and actually creeped me out a bit because I had no idea what to expect. Then I researched a bit about the song and was astonished by the origin of the call, and how it seems like pieces of a puzzle for 9/11
I think the title track Lateralus is the track that grows on you the most. True to the lyrics, you can come back to it and re-analyze and re-interpret it a million times, it never ends. Here's an interesting fact, did you realize that the flow of the lyrics matches the Fibonacci sequence, like a Fibonacci spiral? One syllable, one syllable, two syllables, three syllables, five syllables, etc.
i did not see it mentioned in the top 100 or so comments, but Disposition/Reflection/Triad form a sequence, kind of like each is 1/3rd of a song, and they typically perform all 3 in a row if at all.
I like your channel. I do have a little piece of advice for the image part of the video which is to perhaps put less ISO when you film because there is little bit of noise in your image (mostly in the shadows)
Lyrics from Schism, "Cold silence has a tendency to... Atrophy any sense of compassion..Between supposed lovers", Is one of my favorite lines ever written from them.
You are absolutely right about Keenan’s voice! When I was a teen, we used to say that Chevelle (their early albums) were kind of like the pop version of Tool :) Aenima is Tool‘s best album in my opinion, make sure to check it out!
Ghosts and Razors sounds like it could have been recorded alongside Tool’s Undertow. Just an newer example of that from them. It’s my favorite track off of their new album.
I love the intensity Tool can bring, but some of the tracks or sections with a more restrained, stripped down, mellow vibe... I've had some nights, driving on the highway with hardly a car around me listening to this album, Aenima and 10,000 Days that were pretty serene. I also love your take on each track.
@@mollyesanborn that's probably why descending from their latest album is one of my favorites. It literally starts with an oceanic soundscape. Justin Chancellor, their bassist, is often the backbone for their more chill soundscapes. His use of bass guitar is second to none (and one of the reasons I bought a bass guitar myself).
Parabol and Parabola are meant to be listened to continuously that's why the lyrics are the same. Essentially a part 1 and part 2. A fun fact about this album is that it's meant to be listened in a very particular order based on the Fibonacci sequence. In that order the songs flow from one to the other very smoothly.
If you liked listening to them you should see them live. They are, without question, the best band I have ever seen live. I have been to six shows and they never disappoint. You should also check out Maynard's (singer) other band Puscifer. Very different from TOOL.
Why am I obsessed with watching people experiencing things I love for the first time? Love your reactions! Very good breakdowns and your enjoyment is contagious. Keep it up!
Thanks! Glad to hear you're enjoying the videos :)
I wish I could listen to Tool for the first time again

Yes, one scream. Source: He's done it in live shows

He really did do it live. But that was back in early 2000s. Now he only does half of it. Age catches up to all of us
@@losdog13 just watched him do it tonight
Gotta be the first time I've ever heard anyone describe "The Grudge" as a simplistic track LOL.
By simplistic I meant that the instrumentals sounded minimalistic, but the way they layered and built them up is really impressive!

Yep, you're spot on.
Now go listen to Passenger again! Yes from the White Pony, best collaboration ever! Chino & Maynard are vocal Gods
The more you listen to this album, the more it becomes part of you. One of the best albums of all time.
They have 5 albums in the top 10 in the history of ....ever.
I remember being 20 when Schism first dropped. ANEMA and Lateralus will always defining albums of my youth. I always thought of the album as 'Communication' and evolving to be able to communicate. The Patient:

Schism:
"There was a time that the pieces fit, but I watched them fall away.

Parabol/bola
"Twirling 'round with this familiar parable
Spinning, weaving 'round each new experience

We once again return to Maynard ascending and finding peace and spiritual healing. No more of peoples bullshit, he's gonna live... ride the spiral. No more seeing black and white like a child, but life in color.
Lateralus:
"Over thinking, over analyzing separates the body from the mind
Withering my intuition leaving opportunities behind
Feed my will to feel this moment
Urging me to cross the line
Reaching out to embrace the random
Reaching out to embrace whatever may come."
And we end it looking back. Maynard giving some tips and what you need to do, what he did, to heal. My absolute favorite song now, many years later..

Deftones, Tool, Radiohead... my favorites too
Interesting story about Faaip De Oiad: The phone call was from a conspiracy theorist who called a radio station on September 11th 1997.
Then I researched a bit about the song and was astonished by the origin of the call, and how it seems like pieces of a puzzle for 9/11
That is really weird... sounds like more than just a coincidence. I wonder what ended up happening to the person who made the call.
I'm 25 seconds in and I just can't with this one. Christ. "So much energy" 😂 Wowzers.
The footsteps that you thought you heard at the beginning of lateralis is actually a heartbeat
Now you need to listen to it all together uninterrupted. :)
Excited to see you dive into Tool.
It hurt my soul to hear MJK compared to the lead singer of Chevelle.
You need an award. You said "schism" right on one try
I certainly didn't
Awwwww. pah-RAH-bow-lah
Im here for this TOOL journey 🤘🤘🤘 Good golly, Miss Molly…get ready for the albums that followed this 😁😁😁
I'm excited to hear them!
I would be curious on your reaction to Mother Love Bone’s Apple album. Love your channel, keep up the great videos!
10,000 days is Tool's best album IMO
That was fun! TOOL forever! 🖤🤘🏾
i did not see it mentioned in the top 100 or so comments, but Disposition/Reflection/Triad form a sequence, kind of like each is 1/3rd of a song, and they typically perform all 3 in a row if at all.
I was in high school when this came out... Damn I'm old 😂🤣😂🤣 enjoy the spiral!!!
Highly recommend rage against the machine! They toured w tool back in the 90s and Maynard actually has a solo In RATM’s “Know Your Enemy.”
Rage Against The Machine is a band I've got at the top of my list for a reaction video! Can't wait to hear their stuff.
This album, along with Korn “Untouchables” and Slipknot “Iowa” all came out within a year. I miss those times!
No comparison Menard dominated the Saul passenger and he always will !
Cool that you mentioned the singer sounds similar to the guy from Chevelle. They were inspired by Tool.
The patient is my favorite track off this album.
I like your channel. I do have a little piece of advice for the image part of the video which is to perhaps put less ISO when you film because there is little bit of noise in your image (mostly in the shadows)
Thanks, I'll have to try adjusting that next time I film :)
Yes, Parabol and Parabola are movements of a single piece of music, it is really just the same song.
Great reaction for a great album🤘🙃
Thanks! :)
Mantra is actually Maynard squeezing his cat slowed down a dozen times xD
I like that you called them interludes and not filler. Given that the album is 79 minutes in length, the latter yet common suggestion is absurdist
I wanna snuggle with ya and watch your DVD's.:)
Lyrics from Schism, "Cold silence has a tendency to... Atrophy any sense of compassion..Between supposed lovers", Is one of my favorite lines ever written from them.
YES, Absolutely yes, hear all of them, and while you are at it hear Leprous the Congregation please
You’ve heard this guy, Maynard, in a Deftones song before as well, Passenger that is.
You gotta listen to Parabol and Parabola straight back to back without pausing because Parabol transitions straight into Parabola.
You are absolutely right about Keenan’s voice! When I was a teen, we used to say that Chevelle (their early albums) were kind of like the pop version of Tool :)
Aenima is Tool‘s best album in my opinion, make sure to check it out!
Yeah, I can see that! Chevelle is kind of like a more accessible/pop-ish version of Tool. And I'm looking forward to hearing Aenima!
@@mollyesanborn Chevelle are huge Tool fans and consider them and inspiration so the similarities are definitely there.
Ghosts and Razors sounds like it could have been recorded alongside Tool’s Undertow. Just an newer example of that from them. It’s my favorite track off of their new album.
mantra is maynard's cat meowing really slowed down.
You're hittin a lot of my favorite bands. Nine Inch Nails, Tool, Gojira, Gorillaz. Love these vids
Glad you're enjoying the channel :)
I love the intensity Tool can bring, but some of the tracks or sections with a more restrained, stripped down, mellow vibe... I've had some nights, driving on the highway with hardly a car around me listening to this album, Aenima and 10,000 Days that were pretty serene.
I also love your take on each track.
Yes, their mellower/more melodic pieces are some of my favorites. Love how they can go so hard and yet infuse those serene moments as well.
I can't wait to hear it!
Comparing Maynard to Chevelle just broke my heart. And the comparisons to Deftones- Deftones wish.
Interesting! I would be interested to know what order the tracks would be in if you followed that sequence.
@@mollyesanborn I'm not quite certain of the order. Lots of their fans disagree on the order but. It's a nice tidbit
I own this on vinyl
I really like this album...but I personally believe their Aenima album is their finest album from beginning to end...
I cannot wait to hear Aenima!
Oh oh!! Will you do Sound Awake by Karnivool?? Thank thee🙏
I feel like Tool use their interludes like smelling coffee between tasting different wines.
Lol chevelle copied Tool, not the other way around.
6:26 I am personally offended whenever someone refers to a bass as a guitar, something which happens sadly often
Thanks for pointing that out, I'm learning, haha!
You need to chill out.
Wait 'til you do some Opeth...
Thanks for showing Tool some love! You must start from the beginning with Opiate. They just evolve with every album. Never disappointing.
I'm looking forward to hearing all of their albums!
If you liked listening to them you should see them live. They are, without question, the best band I have ever seen live. I have been to six shows and they never disappoint. You should also check out Maynard's (singer) other band Puscifer. Very different from TOOL.
My faith in humanity is restored hearing Lateralus won out by a lot.
I'd love to see you react to Swans. Or Lingua Ignota!
I will add both of them to my list! :)
@@mollyesanborn YESSSSS then you'll have done my top four favorite bands lol
When watching newbies react to Tool, one must suppress one's pedantry... 🤐 Keep them coming.
Chevelle wishes they were Tool
Parabola and Rosetta Stoned all the way
