The Slow Death of Let's Play Videos

  • Let’s plays used to be the cornerstone of UA-cam. During simpler times, when video titles just had the name of a game and an episode number, let’s plays paved the way for gaming as we know it on UA-cam today, and - in many ways, for commentary content in general. Alongside a few other forms of media, let’s plays are basically the reason I’m here today. So if you’re looking for someone to blame, look no further. For me, and for many others across the globe, let’s plays were our first foray into UA-cam videos, both from the perspective of a viewer, and for some of us, from the perspective of a creator.
Let’s plays scratch our goblin gamer brains in the perfect way, perfectly capturing that feeling of sitting on the couch, watching your friend play their favorite game - except that no friends are required, which is very convenient for me. They come in many shapes and forms, with different creators covering different types of content and presenting their content in different ways - with some being laid back, and some screaming so hard their headphones fall off.

Tbh I prefer watching a 10-20 minute long video of edited gameplay than watch the same game live. One of the main reasons why I used to watch so many gaming content but barely do nowadays

I have to agree with this. 10-20 minute edited videos will have the best parts of the recording/stream while leaving the quiet or less interesting parts out, but the videos are also enhanced by changed made with the edits

Same. Edited stream highlight videos are a middle ground I can enjoy sometimes, but it's a different dynamic. For one, it feels like you're always left on the sidelines, as the streamer's focus is (understandably) dominated by the interaction with chat.

I've come ot dislike streaming as a medium.. Because most streams tend to devolve into a chaotic mess of subs, donation messages, raids, follow alerts, and all sorts of other distractions.. Watching a streamer for their reaction just doesn't work, because they stop playing every 5 seconds..
I like the curated format, where someone reacts to the game, talk about facts they know about it, or just telling us some random life stories.

I like rewatching the jon era of game grumps. Theres something really comfortable about just two people talking to each other being genuinely interested in what the other person says. Its also cool that they actually talk about the game design of the game which creates an interesting dynamic with the gameplay that isnt purely reactionary. Also theres some nostalgia to it and its wholesome to see someone enjoy something you like too. Hearing them talk about games that "just came out" in 2012 and speculating about the future also gives me a kick. they seemed less commercial and are less edited making them feel more natural. The low editing also gives you the feeling of being there with them, just hangin out.
Aaaanyway. Speaking of editing. I think your editing is really cool especially in this video. I especially appreciate the laid back vibe. It doesnt seem like you're trying hard and feels very natural, which as previously mentioned I greatly enjoy.
I have the tendency to post long comments sometimes sorry.

Damn man with that Earthbound clip I thought you were going to mention who I desperately wanted you to mention but you broke my heart ;(.
Chuggaaconroy is arguably the most important LP’er in the platform’s history. He’s one of the first, maybe even the first, to do it with his Earthbound LP in 2007 when he was 17 years old. He influenced everyone on the platform to want to be a UA-camr a little more than a year after UA-cam came out years before LP’s hit their peak. He does not get the flowers he deserves while also still uploading constantly 15+ years later. Long leave Emile or “Chuggaaconroy”

As a German who didn't speak much English at the time and therefore only watched German Lets Players, I can only write from this perspective. There were so many channels that made lets plays, but only a few are remaining. Like Gronkh, one of the biggest and most well-known German Lets Player. He shaped the German Lets Play scene like no other, e.g. with his Minecraft Lets Play, which lasted over 1000 episodes, and many others only started with UA-cam through him.

Good stuff. Here is what has always been my head cannon for the history of LPs
    SA Screenshot era
birth of video let’s plays - I credit to Slowbeef
1st LP boom, when let’s plays became more popular - I credit the game Kaizo Mario World, Proton Jon, and Psychedelic Eyeball. This was a precursor to both the full game playthroughs, as well as the funny viral moments video, such as Proton Jon’s Kaizo special stage 2 parter.
Inspired era- new lets players being inspired by LPs from LPers like Jon emerge, among the most popular being Chuggaaconroy and NintendoCaprisun. The more popular LPers maintained full game LPs or full match gameplay for online or multiplayer games for the most part.
Viral Era/2nd LP boom- more LPers emerge, the most popular move away from full game play throughs and go for more quick videos and series. Most popular of this group include UberhaxorNova, Markiplier, and the biggest name in LPer history, PewDiePie. Quick fire videos and topics included Amnesia levels and Happy wheel levels.
Collab groups era-Started around the same time as 2nd LP boom, took a little longer to catch on than the individual Lpers. More Lpers began to collab to make multiplayer content, or make commentary easier and more to jump off of. Retsupurae can take some credit for being one of the original collab efforts, and some of the true early decently popular collab channels include TheRunAwayGuys and WiiRiketoPray. However these truly caught on in 2012 in 2013 in my opinion with the emergence of the crew, lead by KYR Speedy, Game Grumps, and eventually the Vanoss Crew which passed them all. Also corporate let’s play groups, such as Achievement Hunter Let’s Plays and Smosh Games became bigger during this time.
Twitch era: The biggest creators of the 2nd boom and the collab era stayed relevant for the longest among the other Lpers, however the emergence of livestreaming, as well as UA-cam continuing to make stricter rules regarding monetization and copyright, and of course the emergence of professional esports has lead to twitch becoming the preferred platform for many past and current Lpers. As mentioned in the video, KYR speedy moved 99% of content creation to Twitch. This is also the case for even Let’s Play veteran Proton Jon. At this point most UA-cam full game playthrough lets players have lost relevance, with only a select few, such as Chuggaaconroy, maintaining a consistent audience from years past (of course personal issues may affect this if/when Chugga returns from hiatus). To me, this is the current state of Let’s Playing.

Long scattered thoughts below, don’t really know where I was going with it
Something that I find interesting is that I prefer watching UA-cam videos rather than livestreams. I’m not sure why but I just do, and to see a die out of let’s play content on UA-cam is sad and yet I’m fine with it. The amount of lets play content on UA-cam is astronomical and still being produced. Mark as mentioned in the video still rides the lets play train while keeping it entertaining and I could watch hours of it. But having the option to watch other content is just as enjoyable as the lets play type content which is why I really like Jack. Overall it’s a really nice balance especially, when the UA-camrs who don’t do as many lets plays come back every once in a while.
Something else I wanna mention is how UA-camrs have grown with their audience where it sees fit. Like Jack went from being loud and, for lack of a better word, obnoxious to a more laidback and calm UA-camr. While some UA-camrs stayed the same like stampy, which isn’t exactly a bad thing. Stampy brings nostalgia and melancholy to the platform and it’s just as enjoyable as it used to be.

Just a lil comment, around 2:43 you say it’s a lil hard to point to where the first lets play was… I believe it was from a channel called “Mac and Mesh” a few years ago and they began recording lets plays around 2003-2004 if I remember correctly. A few years before UA-cam was founded and 2 or so years before the first so called lets play was recorded. Mac has a review channel today called “Worth a buy” that’s been hovering around 300k subs for a year or so, I don’t know what Mesh is up to. Mac still claims he made the first ever lets play but I’ve never heard him elaborate much on it. In fact if you see Mac and Mesh’ most recent video on UA-cam from 10 or so years ago (yes that’s their last upload) in the very first 5 seconds it states it’s the very first lets play followed by the lets play footage. I’m surprised not many people have talked about it more considering it dominated gaming on UA-cam for a whole decade

Amazing video! Really enjoyable and captivating. Though I wish you had mentioned chugaaconroy, who has been making Lets Plays almost daily, day in and day out for the past 14 or so years. He made a Super Mario Sunshine lets play that you’ve probably seen before and I think he’s a huge part of the Nintendo lets play scene.

Another excellent video, Meraki! I personally don't think that those multiplayer Minecraft videos would be considered 'true' Let's Plays, especially when compared to not only other Minecraft series (like the Yogscast), but more structured series like anything made by Chuggaaconroy. However, I do still think that their role in the Let's Play sphere, possibly because of their ties to Minecraft, are incredibly important. I would put those MMVs as what Let's Plays have kind of evolved into now - things like Mianite, Hermitcraft, and the Dream SMP, the new wave of content.

this was so lovely - markiplier inspired my love for video games, for all that goes into them and their story and ability to make you feel transported. i got into his videos when i was in middle school and watched him well into my college years. i would fall asleep to his videos, cry with him, laugh with him and get scared with him. markiplier was such an important part of my life for so long - it’s been awhile since i’ve watched him but i always go back for a video or two and it’s like seeing a familiar friend after a long time. i’m always gonna love that man 💛

i used to be one of the bigger let's players in my country from 2009/10 to 2012/13 during my college time and remember it being quite a taxing experience. i always enjoyed interacting with my community and in the beginning, up to like 500 subs, that was a fun experience and i enjoyed creating videos, but it changed pretty quickly when the subs reached 4 digits. i was uploading like 4-6 videos per day and people were still demanding more, i remember most comments under every video just being about wanting me to do more videos and upload them more quickly and i was already spending up to 8 hours a day just on creating, rendering and uploading videos - all that after school was done. for my own health i had to slow down, but comments got more and more aggressive, things like asking for me to kill myself and such. shit was intense. it later extended to my steam profile and even my facebook when i was only uploading 2 videos a day and a while later i just pulled the plug - made a new account, changed my entire internet identity and stepped away from producing content. i know i could've just ignored the comments, that's what everyone always says, but it's quite hard to do so when the most fun thing about creating content is to interact with your community. granted not everything was bad at all times. i learned a lot and pretty much all of my best friends nowadays are people who were once just viewers of my videos who left nice comments, but still. watching let's plays was always great, creating them yourself not so much.

I definitely have a lot of Nostalgia for a lot from several early Let's Play channels that focused heavily on a lot of retro video games - mostly NES-N64, Sega Genesis/Mega Drive and GB-GBA, at first. Around when I entered middle school, (in 2008) I would stumble upon HCBailly while search for a videos to help me through my first play through of Final Fantasy 2 (Dawn of Souls, Deist Cavern). I was intrigued.
Over the next couple years I'd also heavily follow both NintendoCapriSun(NCS) and Chuggaaconroy. sometime during the summer of 2009 I stumbled upon another Let's Play channel that introduced me the idea of live streamed video game (VG) marathons for "charity." In those days, during these first Charity VG marathons, it wasn't unusual to have a middle man from these early stream groups to hand off the money, on behalf of the people who donated, to their selected "charity". The first video Video game streams were streamed on, what was then called, Ustream (It was and several other sites were later bought out and overhauled/changed into IBM Cloud Video). On Ustream most VG streams were solely game play,. in 2009/2010 Technological limits, forced most people to either have multiple accounts, because each channel had a single video and audio channel, back then, people had to choose what each would feature. These charity events would often have 2-3 different streams, broadcasting simultaneously.
Ustream, at least from my perspective, was more known for political broadcasts, any opportunity to have a non-politically heavy alternative was very much welcome. Around 2012/2013 many people moved to - then Justin tv, now Twitch.tv, Another that benefit the people began to enjoy was the option to use software that could broadcast multiple channels while streaming. One of these charity marathons TheSpeedGamers (TSG) would also introduce me to Chuggaaconroy in 2010, and through Chugga I'd also be introduced to NCS, if memory serves. After marathoning a lot of NCS' content I also started doing Let's Players. There were several channels that NCS would collaborate with, sometimes in a racing format, sometimes as a guest commentator. I forget who, but, one of these people introduced a, now deleted forum, for Let's Play Collaboration, one of these were collaborative videos from a Minecraft server. I joined this server, and a corresponding Skype group, some of the members introduced me to Ethoslab and Direwolf20. eventually the demands of school/university demanded most of my attention, and I significantly slowed down on making Let's Plays, and eventually, had a fresh restart. Most of the footage from my old Let's Play attempts is currently gone. a multitude of factors currently discouraged me from making new UA-cam content.
I could give more details, but, what I hoped would be a quick comment nearly turned into an essay.

I remember that my experience watching let's plays actually started with Retsupurae, a channel founded by the very Slowbeef who is commonly credited for "inventing" the video let's play. In that channel, he and his friends would make fun of LPs made by others, usually due to poor production quality like pointing a camcorder at your monitor, or due to some funny quirks.
Some of their earlier videos were pretty juvenile and mean-spirited, and I was actually afraid that if I started let's playing, they would pick on me for being bad at it, lol. Coincidentally, I didn't really start LPing until after the channel posted their last video, and long after they had moved on from riffing on other people's LPs (because that well had dried out) to commenting longplays of bad games.
Their "Adults React To PewDiePie" video is their most popular. Hard to believe it's been 11 years already. I remember Pewdie wrote a reply to it in the comments that started with "Pretty funny I'll admit!" before telling people to keep watching because that gives him money. It came across as petty. He deleted that reply instead of owning up to it, of course.
That video had a big impact on me and soured me on the popular let's play format, with face cam and exaggerated reactions. It made me consider every LP using that format to be "soulless" and made with money in mind. This extended to ads, sponsorships, making UA-cam into a full-time job, and later streamer overlays and chat interaction, etc. It made disregard the popular let's players and also made me set myself up for failure by deliberately going against all the most successful trends in my own creations. To be fair, I do dislike all these things I mentioned, particularly when someone puts their face on the screen when it's not necessary. So my own let's plays are something I would like to see more of, and still occasionally find something like that in the depths of the platform.
However, the best LPs out there are probably the ones on SomethingAwful's Let's Play Archive. Ones that feel less like watching a friend you never had play a video game, and are more on the informative side. I have to give Bobbin Threadbare's Let's Play Deus Ex a mention here. An absolutely brilliant LP and the peak of the format for me personally.

Something else I wanted to add is "modern" let's players starting from PewDiePie have felt to me more like entertainers rather than that ideal of a random dude playing games who you feel you could be friends with. The connection is no longer there. And I definitely don't feel that with live streamers - it's practically their job to read the stream chat and amuse people.
I'll admit that the main reason I even started making let's plays in the first place was to attract people who would be interested enough in them to write something insightful in the comments. I was never good at talking to people and I've figured that was one way I could make friends. Maybe I was way ahead of the curve on that terminally online parasocial trend, lol. I saw the old-style format as a means to connect. No wonder it fell out of favour and is now "dead" as you stated.
I will never tell people to like, subscribe, comment, etc. My channel will never get off the ground, and that's okay. Sure, it's demotivating to see your videos get no traction, but I'm where I want to be, having a day job and sometimes putting something out as a hobby. And once in a blue moon, someone will post a comment that they've clearly put effort into, and that makes it all worthwhile. It's a much better feeling than visiting the UA-cam Studio and thinking to myself: "oh God, I've wasted 15 hours of people's lives this month with this crap", lol.
Truth be told, I'm kinda terrified at the prospect of having playing video games be my day job. Like having to play them for 8 hours a day. I'm not cut out for that. I don't know how these people can do it and not get burnt out. They have my respect. I'd rather try other things with the time I have left.

I would say gaming livestreams didn't replace Let's Plays but a new version of Let's play. Livestream VODs are basically traditional Let's Plays (more so when edited) with an extra commentary in the form of Chat. Livestream Let's Plays are more intimate in one way and less intimate in others. Less intimate in that it feels less of a one to one exchange due to being aware of the other viewers with the chat. More intimate in the fact you can be there reacting to what's happening in the game with the player live. The player is able to see your reaction and reply to you giving you something more like watching your friend play a game in person.
