Hello friend. Thanks a lot for your wonderful videos, interesting area's Philippines For reply aqaratena@gmail.com Best wishes to you and family Sharif nd NENG Dalia
Used to drive through there in 1956 but the river was clear! We lived in Dau and take that short cut to old Balibago subdivision. There was no bridge but cars and jeeps were able to cross.
Great videos!!! , I am learning a lot. I like how you are not judge mental and go with the flow . Your videos keep my interest too, I would have to say one of the best Expat bloggers.
Really enjoyed this video, I have been to many squatter areas in the Philippines, I always make sure I am with a local, I tend to buy a few sweets from some of their stores and give to the kids, just eases the situation.
Cool vid. Actually I have enjoyed all your videos that I have seen. I am a retired Canadian and have been here just over six years. However, the past year or so I haven't been able to get around too much; so your videos are like a guided tour for me. Thank you and keep them coming :)
new subscriber ! I have watched your video's for about a month, but at first didn't subscribe because I didn't know if the subject matter was going to interest me. I have become addicted to watching your family from day to day. You give a real insight to life in the Philippines as ordinary citizens of the country live. You have a good thing going, don't change a thing! Jeff from Louisiana !
Thanks for sharing this. I saw a lot of squatters when I visited the Philippines back in 2012. This video brings back those memories. I look forward to returning one day.
HI Philly, Ive been following your blog for quite sometime now. And I guess ive been enjoying your posts, simple but yet so interesting. Just one bit of advice... I am a filipino and but yet i dont go to places like that except in certain situations where I have no control. Just be careful always. Keep it up and more blogs to come.
I noticed after the bridge, Nice concrete, road.....? looked like in a very good condition too. oh checked my time to yours... 8:47 am here. now 9:47 pm there.. {here."south Louisiana"..}. love your show. :P
It's mind blowing when people talk about they lived there back in the days, but yet not talking about how they would like to make a difference in that area. There are many of you who can actually make a difference with little resources that you have, especially if you used to live there.
Thanks for the coverage and showing how others struggle so much. But - as you know, people live there all their lives, raise many successful families and are happy. The ultimate of making the best out of what we might consider a bad situation. It's an example of the best in human fortitude and spirit.
good video Phil walked through some slums back in the early 90s I was in my mid 20s with my uncle over a old train bridge they did not use any more went a few different ways he new a lot of people in there he been going there for years was a eye opener then would have changed a lot now
Thanks for sharing Brian. I’m a big fan of all of your walking videos as it’s nice to see a slice of life in a different part of the world. As a Filipino who was born in Manila and now lives in Kansas City, MO I wish I could go back more often. On a side note, I wish my fellow Filipinos would clean up that area around that bridge you went by as well as few other places.
I wouldn't go there especially in the evening. Crossing the bridge is okay, but falling into the water by accident a big no no! A big thumbs-up to you. You did because of one subscriber's request. 😊👍👍👍
It would be interesting to see if the local govt placed a industrial sized bin there if the people would use it. I'm sure no-one really wants to have to throw their rubbish in the creek if there was an alternative.
Hi Philly! The hand-to-forehead respecting elders was nice to share. I married my Cebuna Princess in 1995 at the Saint Rose of Lima Parish in Danbantayan, northern tip of Cebu. When her parents brought her to the altar I took both their hands in turn and pressed them to my forehead. The whole church gasped to see me do it. The sign of Utter Respect. I read about the Philippine Customs during the 21 hour flight from New York. At the family farm all " 56 " grandchildren did the same to me at our wedding reception Just wanted to say appreciate all your efforts. We plan on going next year for a month to visit her family and her 11 siblings - my wife is the baby of the family ! Maybe hook up when we visit.... Our best to your wife !
There is a place in DAVAO that I went to in 2014 where we had to walk down a very run down and a little wider alley only for pedestrians and motorcycles. It wasn't a squatters area but it was still very poor and somewhat trashy. Further in there was a much better constructed bridge with a shelter over it going over a polluted creek almost as bad as the one in this video. My brother-in-law was taking us to a place where some "FIGHTING COCKS" were being raised. Interested only in the culture, they gave me 15 second MOCK fight between two roosters and put them back on their perch. I personally do not support that specific sport but I know it is a way of life there and for some it is their only means of income. Thank you for the walk; I love learning of, AND seeing more of the PHILIPPINE culture regardless of where it is.
Hello Brian, Lot² and Honey Grace Thanks for sharing another great video, it's entertaining as always... I wish you were filming this and other similar walkabouts and journeys at back roads and alleyways using your hidden camera, the one you have used before instead of your G7x, at that time and in the future, for safety reasons. I hope Liberty feels better after the special menu of mouthwatering smoked fish you provided. Regards!
Can't believe I no longer recognize that place I used to live there in check point Narciso St near railroad track and really close to main gate Clark Air Base .
ive been in many squatter areas alone, even tondo, and although always daytime, ive never had a problem. had more hassel in usa and canada then in philippines.
Man when I was a kid over there we used to go in areas like that all the time, especially when school was out for the Summer. It has not changed much. Also, when we lived in the Diamond Subdivision, we used to walk to the farms, rice paddies, and the jungle. It was like Disneyland for kids. :)
Know that area.part of it is squatters area but not all.i used to live 200 meters on that bridge you had shown to us.the one you pass before going on that bridge are called dau homesite and that area is rough.it was true never go alone in that area even i am from that place still avoiding that area..there is also a ghost story about that bridge.
.....good morning Brian & Lotlot..... btw since ya mentioned it, *advanced HBD Brian* ...... :) .....the slums of Pampanga is nothing compared to the slums here in Manila i tell ya......their local politicians there should do something about those roads coz our squatters here walk on concrete streets, but live in smaller quarters you won't believe would fit people.....hehehe...... .....nice walk nonetheless......thanks fer sharing man..... :D
Thank you for sharing your video I would be scared to walk down there at night time I think I'll just walk the long ways by instead of crossing the shortcut Bridge do you feel like the bridge might need to be replaced one day and make it stronger
I thought it was very interesting. I've been to the Philippines and will return. The people and their country are great. Many here, especially in Upper Michigan take alot for granted. It's hard to understand the dangers there and the reasons to not go alone to these areas.
"I guess I'm an old guy to them. I don't know." LOL. Yep. When kids give you 'Mano' it's a sign you may be getting old. I tried to give it to elderly Filipino women in the states who yank their hand away and say in Tagalog "Don't do that! You're making me older than I am."
Hi Brian, I could sense fear in your voice as you were getting nearer to the bridge😂. Brian, if you are interested in doing a video on water purification, my Wife’s cousin has a water station on Mabini St, not far from where you lived before. If you are interested, please let me know so that I can arrange it. Regards to Lut and Hannah Grace.
There's the bridge and trash....lol I have a buddy that's living in Angeles City for about 4 years now and it's just a tourist trap and trashy to me, I'm a Cebu City kinda guy in the business park area!
I will share this as many people ask me what it is like in the Philippines. My comment is they may be poor but are happy. Yes the trash is there, but given the population, it can be less in than in the so called "developed world". Thanks again. Hope to meet up when I am next over there.
Balibago area has alot of new apartments under construction. I have a brand new, 2 bedroom apartment ( 181usd. a month ) on Jaime Street in the Abacan, Balibago Area. ( Abacan Apartments )
Thanks for sharing. Even in the squatter areas there are good people and happy people just trying to survive.
I agree Gordon and the one young man that showed them the way is really typical of the people in those areas.
You show a side of the Philippines no one else shows. Keep up the good work!
You should check out village people philippines, she actually interviews squatters and translates it.
Hello friend. Thanks a lot for your wonderful videos, interesting area's Philippines

There are a lot of slum vlogs in the Philippines. Search more (eg. Tondo, Manila)
Love it..thanks for taking us there...I miss those in the phillipines...
Used to drive through there in 1956 but the river was clear! We lived in Dau and take that short cut to old Balibago subdivision. There was no bridge but cars and jeeps were able to cross.
This came up in my recommendations. Interesting seeing you visiting squatters' areas back then. Very brave... You and Lot make a solid team.
Great videos!!! , I am learning a lot. I like how you are not judge mental and go with the flow . Your videos keep my interest too, I would have to say one of the best Expat bloggers.
Thank you for sharing. The Philippines is so beautiful.
Love the kids doing the "Mano po" very respectful of Filipino culture!
Excellent unvarnished walking tour. Very cool.
Really enjoyed this video, I have been to many squatter areas in the Philippines, I always make sure I am with a local, I tend to buy a few sweets from some of their stores and give to the kids, just eases the situation.

I liked that one. It's an area I'd never see and still wouldn't even knowing where it is...lol. Great vlog. That was more like an adventure.
Love your videos. You are very cool and chilled guy stay safe mate 👍

Maybe I move there from the States. Maybe then I can afford a ride. :P

Same here, I would not walk by myself at a squatters area day or night for safety reasons. But its cool to see it on video.
Hello Brian, Lot² and Honey Grace

Thanks for sharing this video I hope to retire in Philippines
ive been in many squatter areas alone, even tondo, and although always daytime, ive never had a problem. had more hassel in usa and canada then in philippines.
Philippines is a land of contrasts, incredible beauty a short distance away poverty and pollution. Do be careful!

It's a good thing they put up that no garbage sign...can you imagine what it would look like if they had not posted that ?

Is that bridge called "Pitong Gatang" from Dau and takes you to Mt. View, Balibago?
That place was the Yap park before. Old Balibago.
Hi Brian, I could sense fear in your voice as you were getting nearer to the bridge😂. Brian, if you are interested in doing a video on water purification, my Wife’s cousin has a water station on Mabini St, not far from where you lived before. Do you have an Amazon link for your satchel?
I always feel old when the kids come and do that hand thing...
But it helps me to feel young when my wife's dad comes. And i do that to him :D
It pains me to see people suffering under such poverty, God bless and help them.
Maybe come back during a typhoon and see how the river has changed?
I thought for a minute you were going to fall off the bridge when you focused the camera/did a side view of the creek.
That place looks a lot better than the streets of california, new york, parts of texas, and many other US states.
Anybody seen the bridge? Where's that confounded bridge?
you are a brave man
Scary bridge 😯
I guess the bridge just waiting for the lucky one.
Amazing!
The same SCENARIO AND LANDSCAPE WHEN I walked to a miles of HOMELESS PEOPLE IN LOS ANGELES USA
There's the bridge and trash....lol I have a buddy that's living in Angeles City for about 4 years now and it's just a tourist trap and trashy to me, I'm a Cebu City kinda guy in the business park area!
