- Dang. This is amazing. And reading the lore has also been amazing. Had no idea that this dude absolutely duked it out with Placidissax. Wild.

I'm sure Bayle fought Placidussax with similar fury in his dragon heart
I think it is both Igon’s and Bayle’s tbh since bayle probably also has rage left from the fight with placidusax
I lean towards the opinion that Igon is FromSoftware's most iconic NPC since Dark Souls' Solaire.
@@enutrofdude *Patches will remember that...*
The fact that you were able to nail Balye's whole backstory at 6:45 is utterly nuts! If you can remember the Dragonlord Plasidusaxx, Bayle was a dragon that eventually betrayed the dragon lord in a challenge for power, and they both got mortally wounded in the attack.
I flipped when he discerned that.
Like wtf bro just did that off dome 😂 actually insane
if you have special item called the hefty red lightning pot it puts a nice plot twist to this backstory indicating that mayhaps it was plasidusaxx who is the tyrant and betrayed Bayle, the dragonlord
I love how you can still see Placidusax's heads in Bayle's back and neck in his ingame model
@@AlejandroRodriguez-cy8ee I don't think that Plucidusax betrayed Bayle. The sound effects maxing out and even clipping a little on my end when he does his soaring double-breath had my jaw on the floor during our first and somehow only fight
Also Igon intentionally losing all of his marbles as he screams - CURSE YOU, BAYLE!
He is a major villain, just not of our age. He’s the big bad of the dragon’s age, who challenged the Elden Lord of the past era and almost succeeded but was forced to retreat and spawned an entire sub race of lesser dragons.
He really is just a bad dude, a bad dude that needs killing.
And a naked F*** with a stick and a god killing complex is just the man for the job
Tfw Godzilla fights the king of Florida
Is he truly bad though? We don't know if his rebellion against the Dragon Lord was justified or not, and after he failed, his enemies tricked humans into a cult of exterminating his whole bloodline.
@johnsmith361 yeah from what I can read into it, it seems that bayle and all the rest of the drakes were really just victims of racism and oppression at the hands of the ancient dragons, I can't remeber where I read it but there's an item description that says something along the lines of the ancient dragons saw the drakes as impure and a taint on their bloodline, my guess is that the ancient dragons attempted to carry out genocide on the drakes but failed, and the battle between placi and bayle was just a smaller part of that conflict, perhaps bayle was attempting the end the tyrannical rule of the dragon lord. But this is just my speculation really, I feel like bayles music alludes to a more tragic backstory than you're initially lead to believe.
@@joshualouw9506 Bayle and the drakes seem pretty evil though. The Jagged Peak is littered with the bodies of drakes who, if we can take the two drakes fighting at the foot of the peak as an example, all killed each other. That makes it seem like they have some sort of uncontrollable thirst for violence.
@@joshualouw9506can you do slam dunks without jumping? Cause that's some serious reach lol. Not everyone is a tragic figure, he could very well have been a rykard type, a scar to placi's mufasa.

The whole fleeing thing just reinforces the selfish takeover point IMO. If you are really being exterminated, you aren't gonna run away when there's a good chance you can kill the boss of the enemy. Coz you aren't only fighting for yourself at that point.

This is essentially the theme of Captain Ahab vs Moby Dick
Honestly you nailed it but that vitriol also fits Igon perhaps better than Bayle. Seriously, if you’ve ever read Moby Dick, Igon is just Ahab. Mad fury and hatred directed at his white whale, Bayle.
Tbh with Bayle's design, his vicious fighting style, the fact that he's still going after losing his wings and one of his legs to placi and the fact that he's characterized as vile and ambitious makes me think that he didn't really regret attacking him and would gladly do it again. It feels like Fromsoft subverted their own storytelling conventions since Bayle is made out as this evil, badass dragon, but looking at his state it feels like Fromsoft would tipically have gone with the "great champion is a former shadow of him/herself and is a sad broken thing" trope, but no, Bayle is still a mean mofo. Igon and Bayle are very much alike in that they are both purely fuelled by spite and ambition.
I love how not knowing about Bayle he almost told his lore perfectly just by the music. Bayle is an unstoppable force of nature that once served a lord (Placidussax) wich he betrayed and run away
I would say that the music less of Bayle’s theme and more suited for his nemesis (and the player’s ally) Igon. Igon is a character similar to captain Ahab, and he hates and seeks vengeance against Bayle to the point of obsession. When the player first meets him, he’s been injured, and it’s implied that he lost everything by seeking his honor in challenging Bayle. When you summon him, he rants and raves like a lunatic hunting his great white whale.
Pointing out something another comment said: Florissax mentioned that Igon and Bayle have similar personalities, and due to what all has happened to bayle as well, I'm starting to think that Bayle might be as mad as Igon, but instead of being directed solely and Igon, it might be directed to all the drake hunters and everyone that made his kin suffer (us included). And when we confront him he might be directing all of his fury towards us.
My interpretation is that the lonely cello between all the rampage of the orchestra es Igon's soul, going through all jagged peak for Bayle, just like the cello melody goes on even when the other strings sound
Love how you managed to infer some lore about Bayle the Dread from his two phases, shows what music truly can convey!
“This is really me, and you will die now.” Honestly about sums up that phase change yes

VILE BAYYYLLLEEEEE!!! O’ TERROR INCARNATE!!!!
Edit: also, you described the song perfectly. As the fight is happening, you can summon someone named Igon, who will monologue during the fight, and the music really does feel like a once loyal soldier having to help put down his master, the evilness mixed with the slightly somber parts.

Now that Mohg is clear, Bayle is the only truly and purely evil character in ER, along with possibly Midra in his Lord of Frenzied Flame form.
I'm pretty sure the lord of frenzied flame is not Midra in the slightest, the mannerisms are just completely off, and has some similarities to how the player character acts too when overtaken by the frenzied flame in the chaos ending.
Marika and Miquella are far more evil
@@Darca1nso your kinda right
It's better to think of midras as a prototype.
Someone who WOULD be the frenzied lord.but due to circumstances. (Possibly nanaya or inquisition)
Couldn't complete the full transportation.
As for why they act similar. Remember the flame of frenzy wants to melt everything into one. So it's not farfetched to say it's like a hive mind
Mohg still made a blood cult around killing your own maiden
They are not straight up evil. Their actions caused a lot of suffering, but Marika is still a bit ambiguous. There was a lot of kindness to her, but also ruthlessness. And some understandable reasons for what she did with the hornsent. As for her children, the harm she explicitely did to them (messmer for example) was generally for a good reason too (keep the curses locked up). Marika's problem was a failure in parenting, and a failure in leadership. Not straight up evil imo.
As for Miquella, he does not even realise the harm he does to others. He genuinely just wants to embrace all, and give them a gentler world. But the way he does it...

VILEEEEE BAYLLLEE🗣❗️❗️
HOLY GRAIL
To add some lore for bayle which is just from me assuming and reading the item description with npc dialogue.
Bayle the dread is the ancestor to all drakes while placidussax is the ruler of the dragons that have stoned scales like gransax and fortissax.
At one point bayle and Placidussax fought, this is speculation but it think there is reason to believe they fought in farum azula and because of this fight farum azula is crumbling. To put in perspective of how big this fight mustve been they are the reasons that when we fight them they are both heavily wounded with placidussax losing his two heads which we assumed for the longest time was because of godfrey but it was bayle since the dragon priestess confirms this and since bayle has two severed placidussax heads biting on his back. Bayle has lost a leg and his arms are messed up.
What makes this so interesting is because placidussax was elden lord most likely during the fight and to have bayle who was able to inflict as much damage as he did could make the argument that they were both equals in strength.
We also learn that partaking in dragon communion is encouraged because it encourages the killing of drakes which the priestess also says its what the thier lord, placidussax, wishes
Nothing really to add on but I love that FromSoft understands the balance between crafting spectacles and maintaining reason. Despite their injured states, both Bayle and Plucidusax are absolutely monstrous, but you'd never be able to slay them if they weren't already damaged beyond repair. Much like Igon, your encounters with them are their ways of fighting with every last drop of their being that remains.
In retrospect, pretty much every boss in the game has some level of detriment to them, mental or physical, before we even fight them. Not a single one is in their prime.
@@AuralAzure exactly, I would say the only bosses that are in their "prime" would be the 2nd phase rennala, malenia 2nd phase and the promised consort but even then these people are still behind their prime thats just the closest we can get
@@AuralAzure I like that they go "Hey, these two powerful dragons (Maybe not the largest, like that dragon the priestess is by or Greyoll or Gransax) fought a brutal battle against each other. These wounds can't heal on their own, and they still bear those vicious wounds." It's not even about their prime, it's that until the end of their days, placidusax and Bayle will remember that fight because their bodies were irreversibly changed.
His heart also has an entry that Bayle does not submit during the communion and that one day he will devour the body and soul of the one that communed with it
My take on this theme is ''Generational Relentlessness'' the track feels extremely evil. but the small parts where the violin takes over and the rest of the musical elements kind of.. fade. i think that represents just how long bayle has been at it. and that despite his long and infamous tyranny. he is scarred. and old. a beast who has envoked fear on many generations. and never lost a battle.
But upon thinking further, i noticed that the violin, and the harmony of his theme is at points also very similar to placidusax's theme. which is a really cool detail considering that some of placidusax still lives on in bayle. not just in his memory for being the greatest challenger of his life. but there's literally pieces of placidusax's body still on his model. he carries placidusax's heads on him. almost like some sort of trophy of his viscousness. a warning sign that even elden lords must Dread Bayle.
I love how at 4:40 it sounds like Bayle landing after his initial phase transition attack
I am continually amazed by how correct you are in guessing the story of the characters just by hearing music.
To my untrained ear, as well as due to obvious lore reasons, Bayle's whole theme is very reminiscent of Placidusax's. Both give off this ethereal majesty, one ferocious and one eternal.
It’s incredible to me that he can gather so much detail about Bayle and his lore/connections just from the music. Truly amazing stuff
CURSE YOU BAYLE!!!
YOU SHALL RUE THIS DAY
At 6:20 on, when you mention about a former loyalty that had been broken due to its brutality, that's perfectly accurate. In fact, Bayle , The Dread as the Greatest of all drakes, rebelled and betrayed the old and no longer Dragonlord, Placidussax, leading them to a harsh battle of which both got seriously wounded. When you fight him, the wounds are quite visible.
Nice analysis of OST's storytelling.
Excellent content, as always.
6:27 Nearly 100% accurate. Bayle was once loyal to placidusax, but they had a big fight where both of them where very injured.
i love how bayle and igon are counterparts to each other. they are two sides of the same coin.
The fact that you sensed a betrayal of loyalty just from the music is crazy! In the lore, Bayle betrayed the ancient dragons and battled the dragonlord, naming him and his kin traitors to the ancient dragons.
85% of the player is too focused on the fight to actually listen to the music especially when it leaps and fly around for the first time.
I love that Bayle's 2nd phase is him growing spectral wings out of pure hatred- Hatred for *you* and Igon, as he puts his all into tearing you down, these horrible ants that have overstepped your bounds and WOUNDED him.
Bayle's fight starts with him punching you in the face, good analysis

Most of the other themes are attached to beings that do not particularly want to fight, but are bound either by a sense of duty or by a firm belief in what they are doing.
On the other hand, “The Dread” is a VERY appropriate title for Bayle.
Saw that this boss and Igon took inspiration from Moby Dick, and now just listening to the OST and picturing a monstrous whale is very fitting
Bayle was one of the strongest ancient dragons under the wing of placidusax. But his ferocity and selfishness lead to him rebelling against the dragon lord in a fight that left them both incredibly wounded. So bayle retreated to the old home of the dragons while Placidusax ascended to the skies moving Farum Azula in a space beyond the effects of time, to protect his subjects.
WITH A HAIL OF HARPOOOOOONS!!!! 🗣 Igon makes this fight so incredible, best fight in the game.
You knocked it out of the park once again Marco, and find it even more impressive with a character like Bayle compared to a much more established character like say, a league champion.
First, yes he is hellbent on killing us but not because he has beef with us, but also because he is a cornered, wounded/cripled beast. There is also, as others have mentionned, a captain Ahab/Moby dick rivalry going on with an NPC you can bring to this fight. I wonder if knowing that some parts of the theme echoes to this.
As for the fallen knight type, he betrayed the dragon lord and had a vicious and vilant fight with him for power, to the point where we can find the two missing head of said dragon (placidussax) still biting on Bayle's neck. In what little information we have about him, he is portrayed as a tyrant, vicious and vile creature for the most part.
Lastly about the second part of the song, he doesn't shed his skin but he does show you his true power. As I mentionned he is crippled from his fight with dragonlord Placidussax long ago, he is missing a leg, his wings are also gone (one was ripped off and the other one only has bones left on it). He is suprisingly agile despite this but the fight is very different that dragon fights usually are, as he is not able to fly and mostly lunges and jumps around. When you trigger his second phase, he unleashes his true power, or what he has left in a beautiful yet terrifying display as he conjures some magical wings and starts also having flying attack and triggers lava explosion all over the place.
Overall you absolutly nailed it!
I wonder if the quote "the sheer terror of her" is related to "Terror incarnate"

Amazing theme… gotta do messmer’s next. Such an emotional theme
Man I'd love it if Marco did just a quick look at the boss in question to see how close his observation was to the visuals portrayed. I feel it would blow his mind and add a whole new dimension to his appreciation of the pieces.
It's really fun that you have mentioned Bayle's phases and his "true" form. Pretty much when a player sees Bayle he is in a really bad shape from injuries of a long past. But when the player corners him (does enough damage) it is almost like he is gathering all of the strength that he has reaviling his "prime" magnificent but dreadful form. You have pretty much nailed everything in your analysis. Highly recommend to take a look at this fight. It is really cinematic.
Why is no one mentioning that the start on the composition contains the tree sentinel motif lol also, to the point of loyalty, bayle was a dragon, indeed loyal to dragonlord placidusax so yes indeed, tiess were severed. I love when you do that man.
i think the first phase is igon's theme, and the second is bayle's, cuz combining the first phase theme and the first half of the second, feels disconnected, but combining the full ost, it becomes a story of igon and bayle.
the first phase is igon's hatred, his mind and body is broken, but his spirit wants to fight more.
the first half of the second phase is bayle's story with placidusax.
and the second half is the present, it has both igon's hatred and bayle's history.
Marco, I've been watching several of your videos today... And I'm absolutely blown away by the way you connect with music and paint a picture for us to view in our mind's eye. 6:25 That is very accurate to Bayle's lore.
5:41 This always gives me chills right after the solo ends. Especially 5:54
*BAYLE! VILE BAYLE! THERE IS LIFE IN ME YET! MARK MY WORDS! SOON I WILL FEAST UPON YOUR HEART!*
That 4:30 shift always gives me goosebumps paired with the visuals of his second phase explosion/take off.
Bayle is a very unique dragon in Elden Ring, most of the standard drakes you fight just bite at you, breath fire, and try to stomp on you. They fight like animals, defending territory.
The ancient dragons, they wield lightning like spears and javellins, making giant overly powerful swings.
But Bayle? He is a whole other story. He leaps at you with malice that does not exist in other dragons, when he bites, he keeps his jaws in you, slamming you into the ground and breathing fire onto you. They try to smash you with a massive exposed bone, enhanced with fire lightning.
He had fought the dragonlorn, placidusax, and took 2 of their 5 heads. And judging from the state of the wounds, it was taken with the exposed bone, rather than biting.
This means one of two things, either it predates that battle, or bayle had taken such a devastating blow, but continued to fight, cleaving off most of Placidusax's heads, and managing to live another day.
This act caused plasidusax to start a campaign, having mortal men hunt bayles kin with the purpose of eventually finding and killing him.
Vile Bayle is the most dangerous of all dragons, for he is not just a massive beast, he is the only warrior amongst his kind.
He is trained in the ways of battle like no other dragon, he fights with ferocity and bloodlust, he will use his exposed bone to skewer you, there will be nothing that will stop his assault until death. Even after the consumption of his heart (ritual in dragon communing, used to gain the power of consumed dragon), he will eventually find the moment to consume whoever consumed him with fire.
Who knows what he'd be like if he'd succeeded in the usurpation of Placidusax.
Oh yeah also he wears placidusax's heads like a trophy I love bayle he's so cool
I feel like bayle's theme is the perfect musical representation of the very idea of a massive tyrannical dragon attacking a kingdom
Also him saying that bayle is evil is pretty spot on,he mutilated his lord placidusax, killed potentially thousands, and i get the idea that he might even be a cannibal who eats dragons weaker then him,and he has fallen from grace, from the strongest wyvern to a crippled lizard who has only one hand and one leg
Bayle, is effectively a hater fueled by pure rage, funnily enough NPC that you can summon against Bayle has the exact same emotions towards him

Just wanted to say that I am enjoying these so much. As an audio engineer myself and someone who's been producing music for over 12 year, I've never done Orchestra. Ever since I finished the DLC I was curious if there's anyone breaking down these epic scores so that I could learn a bit and get some insight about the sounds themselves, the root of the emotion that the sound is producing and why/when is it used. What job does each instrument have and why does something happen in particular moments in that particular way. You're exactly what I was looking for.
I appreciate you a lot for doing these. You're super chill to listen to and I'm enjoying these videos a lot. I hope that you do a whole OST series with these cause they really deserve it and you're doing a good job with it.
Cheers!
This means so much! Thank you for taking the time to leave such a kind comment
I created a character just like Igon a few years ago in DnD. A homebrewed berzerker bowman class that was simply too angry to die. He lost an arm and a leg to an ancient dragon and learned magic to use Mage Hand to draw his bow. He drove many spears into that lizard's hide
6:36 damn that's somehow really accurate.
Ain't no way this dude nails the fight the way he did without knowing how the fight goes lol
This is a song about me, a true Drake Warrior, and my buddy Igon. We are fear made flesh
Bayle being an avarage day on Twitter is SO accurate hahahaha, especially when Igon is there
This is the only version of Bayle's BGM I listen to. ua-cam.com/video/ufAmIBRFohM/v-deo.html
Egon's lines are essential.
BASED
"it feels like a betrayal" He did betray the dragon lord
The second half of the song just isn't the same without the SFX of Bayle raining fire and lightning on you.
one of the best boss fights especially if you have Igon by your side
it's wild how you nailed the analysis of his backstory just from the song.
And yes, there is indeed a transformation, bayle basically shows you a vision of what he was when he was whole (with lots of explosions)
WITH EVERY LAST DROP OF MY BEEEING
You can hear in his music it has the ancient dragons theme
That phase change is also similar to placidusax
Your right he was the dragon lords right hand man but betrayed him and lost the fight against the dragon lord forced to hide in that mountain
