I'm from Southern California and my first encounter with Krystal was while visiting in Atlanta in 1967. It was at a Krystal located very close to Avondale Estates, an affluent area on the NE side of the city. I'd never seen a square hamburger before, but boy, these were delicious! I remember the price was around 10 or 11 cents each back then. While at the Krystal, my niece and I ran into one of the members of the rock group, Paul Revere and The Raiders. His name was Freddy Weller. His mother lived in Avondale Estates and he was visiting her and decided to pop into the Krystal for a bite. It was really cool!

I grew up in Dalton, Ga. Chattanooga was less than 30 miles north from Dalton. Krystals were a Sunday treat, 10 cents each and a shake for 15 cents. When the first Kyrstal came to Dalton in 1968, Krystals were 12 cents each and the shake was 20 cents. So, as a teenager I could walk to the local Krystal and have a meal of 5 Krystals and a shake for 83 cents, including tax. Thank you, this a walk through memory lane. Jim

P.S. These Sunday treats were in the late 1950's to early 1960's and there was no interstate highway, so it had to be done on old US 41. We saw other towns, because we went through the middle of them. They were beautiful small towns, and those towns should be seen today. There were small roadside attractions everywhere. This is a part of 1950's to 1960's America that I will forever miss. Jim

I grew up in Atlanta, with two Krystals very close by. I have fond memories of eating there as a kid in the ‘60s and on into my adult life. But in my younger years I never heard anyone refer to Krystal burgers as “sliders.” Matter o’ fact, I never heard the term at all until the mid-2010s. A bit of Googling tells me that “sliders” goes back many decades and, according to some sources, originated with White Castle. But it must’ve been a regional (or multi-regional) thing because I never heard anyone in the South use it until relatively recent years.

Thank you for this superb documentary and your many others. I have many fond memories of Krystal. I went to college and grad school in Nashville TN from 1976 to 1983. Krystal (or, as many students affectionately called it, "Greastle") was right across the street from campus. It was a hugely popular late-night destination for study breaks, bedtime snacks, or drunk munchies after the bars closed. They even had breakfast for those who preferred it, but the sliders, fries, and chili were king! All these years later, I can still remember their unique, wonderful taste, especially after a few beers! Sadly, the Krystal is long gone, but great memories remain.

The Krystal was the first "fast food" restaurant in Chattanooga. McDonalds didn't open here until 1963. They served breakfast, eggs, bacon, sausage, toast, waffles, grits. In the 70s they started serving fried chicken which was delicious. Along with burgers and fries, they served donuts and pie slices along with coffee or whatever drink you liked. I still have several heavy Krystal coffee cups with the logo on them. Best coffee cups ever too. Now days, I don't think they steam them long enough to get that ooey gooey bun that tastes so good. They also have so much more to offer such as cheese pups, chili cheese pups, corn pups, chicken sandwiches, fries, tater tots, milkshakes, biscuits and gravy. The Krystal was where we went when all the bars closed, to try and get as much alcohol out of our system as we could. Gotta love the Krystal!

The order for 4 Krystals, 3 Cicks, 2 Frys, and 2 small cokes from the limited combo menu came to a total of $ 21.57. @@dkm5247 I don’t recall the mirrors, only a lot of polished stainless steel. If I remember correctly, this was the store that had the donut machine in the front window, but I may have that confused with the Tick Tock which was almost next door. There were at least 3 downtown Krystal’s that I remember including one on 5th near the Orange Julius, and one on 2nd near the courthouse. The one on 2nd was 24 hour, as I often ate there in ‘69 when I was working a midnight shift for South Central Bell.

I loved the sunriser for breakfast. Also in Jax Florida they were open all night long, which was nice when working 2nd and 3rd shift.

And, does anyone remember Krystal Kritters in the early 70s? An ad campaign with cartoon characters of a Walrus, Hippo, and Monkey. Lots of giveaways and lots of fun.

Growing up in Chicagoland and being transplanted into southwest Florida. Biannual trips to Tampa would always include a trip to Krystal. Very good substitute for White Castle's if you get them without the mustard. But I think they're going to be done down here, a White Castle Megastore opened up in Orlando.

I lived in Atlanta for 26 years and have no idea how many Krystals I ate. My standard order was six cheese Krystals with an occasional switch to three double cheese gut bombs. I now live on the west coast and dearly miss my beloved little square friends.

My Krystal memory is stopping there in Knoxville, TN at about 4am on a Christmas trip from Charlotte, NC to Nashville, TN. Apparently, they were open 24 hours. If I'm correct, they served doughnuts and we'd get a dozen that were hot and fresh. I never did like the hamburgers but my Mom loved them! I think I've had the chicken a time or 2 but the doughnuts were great.

I love Krystals, we had one for years in lake mary fl, but it closed down several years ago. I used to eat there 5 or 6 times a week, never got tired of the place. I keep hoping they'll open one in Sanford fl before I die. Now that I'm retired I'd eat there everyday. The nearest one to me now is a 45 minute drive too far for me to go.

I did not know Krystals was around in the 1930's. I'm from Alabama so I've eaten my share of those little burgers. About once a year I go get 4 Krystal cheese and then I'm good for another year.

"And as always', I've enjoyed your snippets of Americana. Although I've never heard of Krystal, the brand seems worthy of some good luck in their effort to rebound from bankruptcy. Thanks for the post!

My best memory of Krystals is working with a guy who sometimes came in with "a sack full", usually a dozen and have them for lunch. A slider in one hand and a Krystal salt packet in the other, my overweight and high blood pressure co-worker would polish off the majority of the sliders. I gave deep thought to what I would do if he keeled over while I was working with him. I eventually decided I would step over him, call the security office and get the heck out of there!

Some years ago Krystal redecorated the resturant and put a huge silver ball on the roof of the building to represent the "Krystal". Looks like a giant trailer hitch. Food is fun. Wish it were more allergy friendly.
