YAMAHA MT09 2021 - "LIF CONTROL" - TESTED!

  • Testing out Yamaha's "LIF Control" system which is essentially wheelie control. Whilst I don't personally use the system, this test demonstrates that it is actually a really good system and that it is also rather sophisticated when compared to other "wheelie control" systems available today. Unlike some crude systems found on other motorcycles, power is not cut, but rather it is metered to maintain control and forward momentum.
    The system uses the inertial measurement unit (IMU) to detect the angle of attack of the motorcycle (i.e. a wheelie) and the rate of climb of the front wheel, it then introduces intervention (closing the throttle butterflys, retarding ignition timing) to control the rate at which the front wheel climbs, and also the maximum allowable angle of attack. Note the system will not allow the bike to reach "balance point", nor will the system permit "clutch up" wheelies. The intervention is adjustable through levels 1-3 and OFF (our favorite). Level 1 representing the least amount of intervention in the ON setting.
    The intervention also appears to be mapped for each gear, introducing more intervention (lower angle of attack, slower rate of climb) as speeds rise (probably for safety reasons).
    it would be interesting to compare 0-60 & 0-100 times with the system on and off... Maybe a future video.

    Nice little section of test road;) With lift control in #1 I find it allows a decent wheelie angle and can quick shift into 2nd and starts to bring it down a little then by the time I quickshift into 3rd it is bringing back down to the pavement. The rear ohlins shock is $1100-ish on its own. Just the suspension differences alone are close to the cost differential between the two models. Question bro, how do you like that OEM windscreen ? Do you feel you like to deflects some wind off of your chest and /or face? Maybe when tucking down? I ordered mine but was thinking of the Puig screen because it’s higher, still looks nice, and seems like it will definitely deflect.

      Hi, I like the way the OEM windscreen looks but it is probably not the most functional option. It does deflect some wind from the chest area and a bit from the head but the trade off for me (at 6'2") is a bit of wind buffeting/noise caused by the screen, it disappears if i tuck down.

    • @tankslapmoto9999
      @tankslapmoto9999  2 роки тому +2

      No intervention with TC in level 1 on this particular bike, unless you get wheel spin whilst doing a wheelie (not ideal). Other, more basic, TC systems on different bikes can intervene though, they simply detect a difference in wheel speed between the front and rear wheel and perceive this to be wheel spin (rather than a wheelie) and cut power.

    • @tankslapmoto9999
      @tankslapmoto9999  2 роки тому +2

      If you want to clutch it up to balance point Lif would need to be off. The angle of attack is limited with it on, so effectively there'd be no point clutching it up. TC doesn't intervene for wheelies on this bike, not in level 1 at least👍

      Cheers👍I don't believe that it needs a steering damper in my opinion. I know that some people suggest that it does, but it never gets out of hand in my experience. You have so much leverage with the wide bars and the upright riding position that it is very easy to manage. Also the wobble is usually caused by hard acceleration, where the front wheel is skipping the tarmac with the bars at a slight angle (rather than anything inherently wrong with the bike, like chassis flex or flex in the forks etc).

    I have a question..would it come up higher if you wasn't backing off throttle? I see your wrist backing off then giving it more as it was coming down. Maybe it's my view but looks like you're kinda on and off throttle to me. Not all that much but just wondering cause mine feels like it still climbing even quick shifting into second gear. Does it matter about the TCS mode you're using? I ride normally with everything on one. Thanks for any advice or info on what you were doing with your wrist. Could be the way I'm watching it so just wondering. 👍

    • @tankslapmoto9999
      @tankslapmoto9999  2 роки тому +1

      To be honest I can't really remember, I probably backed off slightly out of instinct. Although I do distinctly recall winding the throttle on mid wheelie to discover that the angle of attack would not increase all the way to the limiter. Without doubt if you tried this with "Lif Off" the bike would have continued to rise and loop out. It's my belief that the bike uses the IMU to limit the angle of attack, I can't imagine that they would release a bike that can be looped out with Lif control activated. I think TCS mode would only have an impact if it detected slip (I ride TCS mode 1 also). Cheers👍

We set everything manually and everything was on settings 1 and the bike just kept getting higher and higher. I thought I was chicken shit but had a pro rider said same thing as your telling me. So now I'm replacing tons of parts but the main thing he's ok. My bike has a recall on ECU but wasn't sure if that has something to do with it acting like it does. I'm going to contact Yamaha.

    • @tankslapmoto9999
      @tankslapmoto9999  Рік тому

      It doesn't like clutch ups with Lif control on from memory, I suppose the whole point of a clutch up is to quickly bring the front wheel up to balance point low in the rpms whereas the Lif control is trying to stop/slow the rate of wheel lift. Maybe if you hit the rev limiter and dump the clutch it would come up but you'd certainly notice the system working against you. With Lif control off, you can still run TCS in 1 or 2 and wheelie as normal, clutch ups etc.

      Something doesn't sound right there, mine would power wheelie in 3rd gear... assume you have turned the systems off (it feels like a different bike with Lif off and TCS off, or on 1). The only other thing might be if you have changed the exhaust, they can loose a lot of power if you don't have the right exhaust/enough back pressure... (stuby cans or no silencer type exhausts are a bit of a no no without a remap).

    With modern throttle-by-wire, there's no real need for ignition interrupt or other engine control methods anymore. The ECU runs the throttle by servo, all the time, no matter what. What you do with your wrist is not always what the ECU does with the actual throttle blades.

    • @tankslapmoto9999
      @tankslapmoto9999  9 місяців тому

      Sounds very plausible for the wheelie control, I'm sure that the ecu, in conjunction with the IMU, could simply close the electronic butterfly's as you say. The traction control feels like it still uses ignition timing in conjunction with closing the throttle. I can't really feel a hard cut these days, but it definitely feels like there's something going on ignition wise.👍

    • @exothermal.sprocket
      @exothermal.sprocket 9 місяців тому +1

      @@tankslapmoto9999 The most instant way to stop engine torque is to stop combustion, for sure. That's usually ignition (various methods that is implemented). Closing primary throttle blades would still take a bit of time to produce reduced torque through the whole system. But as a rule, TBW controls are 100% by servo, and input from all the other sensors factors into computer throttle mapping. It's sort of been a doubled edge sword since TBW became a thing. On one hand you can map power modes, implement cruise control, operate a type of traction control. On the other hand, manufacturers are using TBW for emissions and noise regs, speed caps, per-gear emissions/power limits, and as a secondary issue (due to fuel-cut regulations) the on/off throttle feel is often choppy and puts shock through the drivetrain. Manufacturers are getting better at all the calibrations but you still cannot get around mandatory emissions and noise regs. That's where aftermarket comes in.

    • @tankslapmoto9999
      @tankslapmoto9999  9 місяців тому

      It is all very interesting. People say oh they'd be unrideable with a 1:1 throttle map, but I am not so sure. I suppose it allows the manufacturers to implement their modes and sell a bike that appeals to a broader audience, new riders and experienced alike (plus, as you say, they can throttle map for each gear to appease noise and emissions regs). I have a Tenere 700 with a good old-fashioned cable throttle, it definitely feels more natural to me.

    • @exothermal.sprocket
      @exothermal.sprocket 9 місяців тому +1

      @@tankslapmoto9999 Well for one thing, it was less costly to manufacturer, that'd for doggone sure.
      _With the APSG, the degree of throttle opening is detected by a sensor and magnet and reflected with signals to the throttle valve motor. For good operational feel, the APSG is comprised of a spring, slider and gear and produces varying degrees of friction (resistance) to recreate a natural throttle feel during use._
      All of that had to be R&D, part-sourced, prototyped, tested, calibrated, re-tested, a heap of new part numbers created, and finally absorbed at corporate Yamaha's factory as increased overhead expenses trickling down through everything they ultimately sell.
      Or we could just pop a cable on a pulley, turn a screw, and send it out the door.
      The level of technocratic bureaucracy that is being layered and layered and layered on motorcycles these days is ridiculous, promising a better experience and keeping everyone safe from the dangerous motorcycle engine. The earth is safer from the motorcycle engine. The rider is safer from the motorcycle engine. The neighbors next door are safer from the motorcycle engine. My goodness, without this powerhouse top tier heavy duty computer controlling this motorcycle engine, you'd be sure to die every single time you went for a ride.

With the lift control I quickly started doing crazy power wheelies and I’ve never had to use the rear brake.
