    I knew Ms. Ellis when she was in her late 90s - she was a lovely lady!

    Mary Ellis was my Godmother and I remember going to Ivor Novellos' House in the country with my parents when I was a child. He played the piano and she sang. Quite emotional to see her singing on the Tube

      Agreed. Mary Ellis told me he was a wonderful man! She loved talking about him. Of course he wrote a Musical specially for her.

    Oh, to have lived in that era. Ivor gave the world the priceless treasure of all his music. I have the CDs of 'Glamourous Night' and 'The Dancing Years' but this is a valued treat. Thank you

      Mary lived till she was 105! sang with Carouso! what a lady! and such a bright clear voice! No wonder Ivor got her to sing for him! She was one of the great sopranos!

      Did you have Welsh ancestors? Ellis is usually a Welsh surname.

    Does anyone know anything about Dunstan Hart who duetted with her in 'The Dancing Years'? He was a GREAT Singer!

      @@michaelconnor8317 That's interesting; there seems to be very little curiosity about this wonderful Singer - he had a tremendous voice which I simply love, (can’t think why Ivor never used him more) But as far I can make out, he made only the one 'official' recording, which seems incredible to me... I have many regrets, since I knew Mary Ellis late in her life - but never thought to ask her about him can you believe! She would have told me loads - I could kick myself, she always delighted to talk of her past career - and so enthusiastic. She lived to 105!!

      @@michaelconnor8317 That's him! Photos and autographs are rare too! I have several that I have managed to obtain over the years. I was disappointed he did not appear in the movie 'The Dancing Years' - but then neither did Mary Ellis, or many other cast members, which was a shame...

      @@michaelconnor8317 Sounds exciting! I'll have to have a look - you’ve no idea just how much stuff I have/collect and sort through... Also; my partner is in hospital with Terminal Cancer - and has just gone down with Covid, and so time is pretty much taken up - but I’ll see what I can do. I must have at least four or five (two may be the same - not sure till I look) I’m sure all of them are signed. (and possibly dated too)

    How sad he is only really a bit part in Gosford Park to many people, he was in his own way as talented as Coward.

    • @kiwihans100
      @kiwihans100 5 років тому +1

      Coward was a masterful writer, but Ivor,s music is so much more superior! Every musical play from 1935-52 was studded with wonderful melodies and songs! Cowards famous songs are few in comparison.

    It is hard to imagine that during those times, Hitler was preparing for war.
