I have a full radio programme on Mary Ellis telling the story of "The Dancing Years "-which will be on you tube very shortly. Keep checking back for updates. xx
Such an inspiring and intelligent lady. I have been listening to Noel Coward's 'After The Ball.' She was perhaps past her prime as a singer when she appeared in and recorded that show , but there is such warmth and humanity to her singing. A lifetime of experience in her voice. We are lucky to have her Novello recordings, her Jerome K ' Music in the Air.' She was truly a dramatic force to be reckoned with and so deserves to be remembered.
Yes indeed. And just watched this again after I read your comment.Ironically- the piano accompaniment at the beginning is by George Logan(aka Dr Evadne Hinge)who sadly died this year.Xxx
This is extraordinary, I have longed to see Mary Ellis interviewed for years. I hear she gave a superb interview about ivor novello on BBC radio 3 late in her life but never knew about this. Fascinating. I was thinking this interview must be from 1993 or 94 as both Mary Ellis appearances in Sherlock Holmes (she refers to in interview) are from 1993 & 94. Incredible as Mary would have been 96 & possibly 97 here.
BBC Radio 4 produced a play with Mary Ellis and Evelyn Laye in 1990 . Waiting in the Wings by Noel Coward. That may also be available somewhere to listen to.
