This is a process most never get to see! Before the Indianapolis 500 begins, the pre race ceremony has a parade lap with historic cars driven by the legends themselves. Mario Andretti, Al Unser Jr, Lyn St. James, Simon Pagenaud, and others hop in a few days before to make sure their car is working properly. We drove up there for our friend Luke Edwards of the IMS museum to show us around and give an inside look at how these museum cars are fired up and brought back to the track that made them famous! Everything from a 1909 Buick originally driven by Louis Chevrolet to Penske's Gil de Ferran 2003 Indy 500 winner are here making noise in the same place.

I had forgotten about Penske running two different chassis that year… Really interesting race in hindsight and also compelling that they finished 1-2 and that Helio was that close to a three-peat. Really love that the team honored GdF with that drive, and that Simon was the driver.

Hey Mitchell, I believe the reason for zero degrees of caster is because they had no steering assist or power steering, although there’s a lot less high speed stability it is definitely easier to turn with less caster.

The IH front spindles used on the AJ Foyt/Watson Roadster were still being used on nearly all sprint cars through the 70's and into the 80's. In fact, the aluminum spindles still used today are modified versions of the same spindle design. Its so great to see you delving into other forms of motor sports. Keep up the GREAT work. A little late to the party with the comment, but very cool that you brought this to us in youtube land. The couple of things that you see in not just how much technology has gone forward in a little over a century, from leaf springs and cars that look little different from horse drawn buggies to carbon fibre, 200+mph crash protection, wings, diffusers and super tight tolerances. You can see the personality of the builders and engineers in the cars: The maserati is work of art, a sculpture. The french engineer farts in your general direction with contempt for not understanding the greatness of their engineering. The roadsters look like super nice and very conservatively utilise tried and true components. The Lotus is so delicate and has its eccentricities, but the engine is still pretty conservative in comparison to like the offenhauser in the roadster. Had to do a double take on how much timing they run on it. The 70s, that Mclaren and the one with full width rear wing (which is 72 or 73?)...it's mind blowing just how much horsepower and speed they got out of them compared to honestly how flimsy the cars were and unfortunately just how dangerous Indy was in those years.
...And you gotta love Mario, old is no reason to stop being a race car driver 😀

For Cleetus's fans, him and the Truck series you should do the history on "THE DALE TRUCK" obviously the majority knows that it was a RCR Richard childress truck with Mike Skinner driving but a lot of his fans thinks that he's destroying an actual dale truck LOL. It was built by Lachlan racing. Thought it would be cool to know the history and to where it has been before Cleetus brought it to the channel. and the Build thet are doing now.

The level of access you get to teams, engineers, designer's, cars and drivers is showing the respect you both have gained from your recording of race history. You are so knowledgeable and respectful of the people you interact with and the stories they have to tell. Was so good to see a glimpse of Bruce Mclaren's handi work. actually we still use a lot of the same style parts, back in the day of steel spindles it was International or Ford spindles they are now custom made aluminum with steel snouts for the bearings to ride on. The drive shafts were actually 10 spines but those old 6 splines were a little smaller for the starters. Most of the steering boxes were made by Schroeder which is now owned by I Did It Co. still made today. They use right hand steering on pavement cars because it tends to be more direct to the right front which is more important to keep the play to a minimum as it is so heavily loaded on pavement cars with dirt cars on the straights the right front maybe off the ground so it is opposite loading . They took them to get welded at an airplane factory because they probably had TIG set up when they were super rare in those early days and were very very expensive. When I was a teenager getting in to all this stuff I only knew two places that had a TIG set up. If you notice those old Monroe steel body shocks were made to be taken apart and damping was adjustable even back then Monroe had a racing division and had at track support for Indy. Mike " Umbrella Mike " Boyle was a union boss and a gangster I read a book about him and his Maserati Indy Cars which were pricey back then. . They called him Umbrella Mike because he walked around town and they would throw the gangster bribe money in to the umbrella he used as a cane. They outlawed gas at the speedway after the 1964 Dave MacDonald Eddie Sachs crash and also limited how much fuel could be carried onboard at that time. The 98 number is still active with the Agajanian family along with the Curb family in Indy Car today as sponsors. Houdaille made knee action shocks also back then along with many other auto parts and had industrial companies and years later made harmonic balancers and that is were the Fluid Dampr brand balancers came from now on there own as the parent company went under along time ago.

The Buick, might have ran a track clockwise, hence the camber in the right front wheel,,plus the driver s seat in on the right?

15:10 These cars had essentially the same steering mechanism as my 1948 Ford 8N garden tractor. High tech stuff!

Another great video Mitch. Being from Indiana, saw several Indy 500s and museum, and always loved taking the tour around the track in the vans. First day of time trials always had as many fans as raceday. My how times have changed.

Troy Ruttman was Joe Ruttman's older brother, I interviewed Joe in 2000 at a truck series race & got a chance to ask him about that.

I can't believe you guys went to INDY! Has not been my favorite track or race, but I have watched a few now and I tell you, Nascar could learn a few tricks from the announcers! Those guys got me all fired up and showed some of the great passing deep in the pack! I would love to hear Kevin and Clint get all fired up. Such a cool case of massive engineering, all the perfect welds, those cars are so amazing. Hey Mitchell can you imagine getting to help build one of those awesome cars! Thank you for showing us different avenues into racing heritage. You guys Rule!!! Hope all is going well for you guys!
