This Oldish Man Plays Young's "Old Man" -- Dylan covers a Neil Young Classic after kibitzing a bit.

- Before singing, Dylan relates something that may or may not have happened earlier that evening or perhaps some other time - it's not 100% clear - explaining why the concert started a little late.
He then launches into a very strong, moving performance of a classic Neil Young fan favorite., "Old Man." The rendition stays largely faithful to the original, including both Dylan's singing and the guitars. And on background vocals, Larry Campbell and Charlie Sexton do great job together evoking Neil Young's voice, with its unusual pitch, on the chorus.
It's long been known that Neil Young (like virtually every other modern singer-songwriter) is a fan of Bob Dylan. If anyone wondered whether Dylan reciprocated, his reference to Young in the song "Highlands" from 1997's "Time Out of Mind" provided the answer:
"I'm listening to Neil Young, I've got to turn up the sound. Someone's always yelling, 'Turn it down.' "
Dylan's respect and appreciation for Young are also evident here.
An unusual feature of Dylan's Fall 2002 tour was his inclusion of several covers by contemporary peers at each show.
The most frequently covered artist by far was Warren Zevon, who must have been very much on Dylan's mind. Zevon had been diagnosed with terminal cancer less than two months earlier. He would pass away not quite a year later in September 2003.
Every show on the tour included Zevon's "Mutineer." A second Zevon cover was also frequently added, most often "Accidentally Like a Martyr." The two others were "Lawyers Guns and Money" which appeared just four times among the 37 shows, and a more obscure pick, "Boom Boom Mancini" which Dylan played only once.
Of the several artists Dylan covered on this tour, Zevon was the only to have more than a one song included.
Other songs featured at nearly all the shows if not every concert were the Rolling Stone's "Brown Sugar" and this Young's classic from his 1972 album,"Harvest."
I can see Neil standing on stage right behind the curtain with a rare smile on his face. Excellent. This really made my day.
Don’t know why but I love when Bob does covers of his contemporaries. It’s just a kick because everyone does a Bob cover.
I agree. I wouldn’t want them all the time but sprinkled in here and there, they’reca lot of fun - and interesting to see which appeal to him.
It’s Bob’s way of saying you’re as cool as him
Aside from one-off tributes when people pass away, what contemporaries has he covered other than Young, Zevon, and Garcia-Hunter, and Jagger-Richards?
@@benmeltzer Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohan, Paul Simon, Tom Petty, Buddy Holly, John Prine, Frank Sinatra… not a lot and that’s what makes it special
@@benmeltzer Don Henley’s “The End of the Innocence” - also on this tour. I wasn’t counting Johnny Cash as a contemporary since Dylan was a fan before he was famous. But he has also covered Cash’s Folsom Prison Blues and Ring of Fire at concerts - while Cash was alive. Also Buddy Holly’s Not Fade Away - but you could count that as more of a Grateful Dead cover if you want, because it was pretty much their version.
The ultimate compliment when Dylan covers your song...
Love hearing Bob talk and chatter with his band mates and I especially love it when he cover other people's songs other than own of his own especially if it's NEIL YOUNG.I'm a fan of both these guys.... totally awesome!!

Wow, real musicians playing one off the best songs ever!
Two of my favorites....Young & Dylan...love this!!!
Young and Dylan is timeless, endless and legends. Thank you for the music.
Excellent cover. Many of Neil Young's best songs compare favorably with Dylan's, and that's saying a lot.
Really like this cover. Bob does things his own way. And makes it work.
Forever Young Old Man
When Dylan plays your own song, your life as a songwriter is fulfilled. 💛
Absolutely!
I was thinking the exact same thing 🙂
I don' t think Neil Young needs this accolade.
@@lesterpaul9657 sure doesn't hurt though
If I wasn't so lazy and damned untalented, I'd take up that challenge.

What a gem. I had not seen this before. Just brilliant. Every moment.
What a wonderful trio!!!💖💖💖
@Bob Dylan Hello, Mister. I am fine. I thank your kindness, but i know you aren't Bob. God bless you.
@Bob Dylan Hello. This is a good intention. Bob know his fans love him. God bless you.
@Bob Dylan Well, a lot of Bob Dylan are writing to me. So, I know nobody of them is Bob. I could wonder if Bob wrote to me, but I know he doesn't do this. But the principal reason was a false Bob Dylan deceived me some time ago.
An incredible, timely, powerful interpretation of Neil's song by the master!
Love this !!!!!! 👍✌️❤️❤️❤️❤️☘️
I missed the Bob Dylan wave in the early 60's but caught Neil Young fresh at the beginning of my 12th birthday...... Neil Young is my " Bob Dylan "
Very cool. Are you Canadian?
Neil must be proud! Great idea to get the boys in it. Wow.
Bob's phrasing always inspiring.

Cmon how can you not love old people!
YOU ARE NOW AN OLD AND WISE MAN BOB HONEY
Nice cover Neil Young is respected by Bob Dylan
Wonderful
I have read that Mr. Young had admired and was inspired by Mr. Dylan always. Bob is such a wonderfully successful pro who refuses to place himself in a vacuum of his own thoughts, and appropriately and respectfully pays Neil his due on this masterpiece. Of course he makes it his own as all do with his works. It's beautifully shot. I think this is the closest shot of Bob Dylan I have seen on UA-cam play, and he does play it so well. I used to be the youngest one everywhere I went...it's just time keeps movin' on.
Man those early 2000s tours were incredible.
Holy Forkin Snit!! Wow!
Was this the show to see or what?!?! Thank You, Thank You!!
Mr. Bob is always so respectful when covering anyone else's work. Whether Neil Young, Warren Zevon, the Gershwin Brothers, Johnny Mercer songs, George Harrison or that egotistical twirp Don Henley and many more.
And yes I get to call Henley that after being assigned security detail to the dude at a fundraiser for Walden Woods. Great cause, egotistical twirp.
My father hated this song though and as I got older I found out why he didn't want me singing along to songs with lyrics saying," Old man take a look at my life, I'm a lot like you were."
He was gangsta. So him saying," Do as I say, not as I do!" made more sense. 😀
Thank You for this Beautiful 💎
Love this!
I just listened to an early recording of Bob doing,”If today were not an endless highway….”.What a contrast in the slowly picked(finger) “If today” and Neil Young’s “Old Man”;both magnificent.Notice how happy the band is finding the groove and letting Zimmy lead them expertly to the finish line.Such a teacher for musicians and aficionados alike! An inspirational ‘go-to’,for sure.
My favorite
Song and Dance Man

Happy Birthday, HERO !
I thought for sure this would be a disaster, for some reason. But Bob pulls off here a real gem of a cover.
It’s the subtle changes he made here that really make his version work
@@jennifersman7990 The subtle changes like Dylan singing slightly worse than Neil Young? You mean those changes?
He sure does. I expected a bit of a piss take. This had been rehearsed.
@@justicegusting2476 I love Neil Young's voice. Dylan lost his 20 yrs ago
@@HamiltonRb How can you tell?
He is a classic antique One of the greats
Or, “She’s a hypnotist collector
(He is) a walking antique”. 😉
Michelle Marzwick I remember when Dylan was a young prodigy at the heart of the folk/rock scene of the mid-60s. Time is the great 'equalizer', the great 'leveler' - take a lesson.
@@jaycorby Great advice thank you
@@jaycorby Facts!
Top shelf right here. Doesn't get much better.
We all have to listen to REAL MUSIC & POETRY once in our lives.. With REAL MUSICIANS and SINGERS talking to our HEARTS.
P.S.: I MISS YOU FATHER, I THINK OF YOU EVERYDAY, ANYTIME, ANYPLACE. IF GOD REALY EXISTS I WANNA TALK WITH YOU, KISS YOU, FEEL YOU JUST ONE MORE TIME. I HOPE TO BE WITH YOU SOON, IN GOD'S TIME AND SCHEME OF THINGS TO COME.
Really LOVE IT!
This is brilliant. What a great choice of song. I used to think this song had had its day, it' just turned into a long basically 3-chord jam song like "Hey Jude" &c.; that it was "outclassed by its past", a burden so many 20th century rock stars appear-notice I said "appear"; all we know about them these daze is their UA-cam videos-to be dealing with. But not here, no way! Vibrant, alive! Really good vocal delivery, too. Because Bob is so into it, that gets us into it more as well. And whoa man, take a look at all dem geetars in the back. Too many. Well, to be played at once '+}. Blessings to all.
I love this song! When I was a kid I always switched the lyrics to "old man take a look at my balls they're wrinkled like you." Juvenile humor, of course, but it still makes me laugh to this day! 😆😁🤣😂
I do the same thing with songs. Old man don’t you look at my wife the way I saw you do.
Dylan the most underated guitarist ever
He still has it!
Beautiful
Wow.
Big respect
Great to hear from you you're found your place
I've personally written a song for Bob Dylan. He will never get to hear it, but it exists nonetheless.
let us here some of your lyrics here, why not.
Where can we hear it?
Don’t worry, he has enough rubbish songs of his own to sing 😂
@@JohnnyMagorish Ain’t THAT the truth.
@@JohnnyMagorish so you know, his song for Dylan is rubbish or what
I'm listening to Neil Young, I gotta turn up the sound
Someone's always yellin' "Turn it down"
Right! I actually quoted this, too, in the full description that accompanies the video but either most people, it seems, don’t bother reading the information, or very possibly, don’t know it’s there or how to access it due to the limitations of UA-cam’s format - especially its mobile all format. 🙁
@@ArturArtist sorry i didn't see that. yeah I immediately said wait Bob has a lyric about listening to Neil. thanks mate
Bob's a Gemini, they're notorious namedroppers
Bob plays a young man very convincingly.
that was great
Great song always sounds good to me. I was 24 when it came out! Whoa, very scarey!
Keep singin' Bobby Z.!!
Well I don’t know but I been told
The streets of heaven are lined with gold
Now I ask you how things can get much worse
If the Russians happen to get up there first?
WOWEE, PRETTY SCARY!
- “I Shall Be Free” on Freewheelin’ 1963
Did you have this in mind? 😆
The older Dylan is, the younger he has been.
"I was so much older then,
I'm younger than that now"
(My Back Pages)
What an honor!
Pretty awesome
I’ve seen Dylan twice, and he usually covered Gordon Lightfoot If You Could Read My Mind. Apparently Alice Cooper was one of his favourite songwriters.
Alice Cooper has written many hits.
Most of us don't realize how many.
Saw two live shows. Amazing theatre, and each completely different than the other.
Ralph: Do you recall when and where you saw Dylan? I’ve seen him 200+ times since 1974 on 4 continents and have never heard him cover that song.
neil is the old man Bob is the troubadore , both are classic just like you were
Bob Dylan is one of those human being that do not age. He looks and sounds the same since the 70"s
Cruz. Believe me, he's aged. I remeandwas Dylon mber his baby face. I was 24 in 1970, and Dylan must have been 29. He still sounds Great, in his own inimitable style.
?? Quite the opposite
The band are truly amazing, please name them
Brilliant xx
