A big comfort to see you here this morning, Emma. In my 73 years, I've never felt so much fear for the future. Some things won't change, though, and these keep me going: daily farm chores, being surrounded by the natural world, knitting, spinning, friends, family, and the online community. Thanks for being part of that community.

I admire your positive attitude to work at what you can do and make the most of what life throws at you. We feel that your country's election will also have an impact on us here in the UK. Hobbies such as knitting provide a calm space and allow for even normal breathing. The sweater for your Grandfather is beautiful and will be warm and cosy for him in Canada. I love the idea of the striped socks based on the hockey games . My husband supports a soccer team so will have to ask him how many games they play in a year to see if the idea is feasible. Take care. 🇬🇧

    • @barnabyknits
      @barnabyknits  2 місяці тому

I love this idea, Elaine!! I just took the total number of games (82) and divided it between 2 socks, then figured out how many total rounds I would normally knit and divided it up into 4 rounds per match. Thank you so much for your kind words, both this week and always.

Your channel has provided so much good and I just want to say how much I appreciate you. My husband passed away in July and I have clung to anything that would give me a sense of normalcy. You've provided that to me. Now, since Tuesday, we all face the unimaginable. I've unplugged from the news as well as other sources of negative rhetoric. Thank you for bringing us the thread of joy and kindness, you matter.

Thank you for recording--I needed a woolly pick-me-up after the election. As I said to my kids who were feeling sad and worried this morning: it's like when we talk about climate change; there's never a point where it makes sense to give up and stop trying. So cheers to knitting, and cheers to living as we mean to go on.

Thank you, Emma! I’ve been knitting since 1955 and so I’m “elderly” but I feel your pain and yes, I’m scared about the future and simply cannot believe it. We will survive however as we stay focus on things that bring us joy. I’ve always lived by this: never worry about things you have no control over-and that’s where we are now. I’m sending you hugs today and always! ❤

OMG Emma, this is exactly what I needed a day after our train wreck of an election. It's comforting to know that we as knitters and makers and crafters can help lift eachother up and help one another to not go insane in a very insane time. I met you at Rhinebeck on the hill this year. We talked a bit about running, my outfit (overalls, an oversized hand knit fluffy cardigan and blundstones) and I shared how I've adopted Vermont (and what I perceive to be Vermont style) as my own since my daughter is at UVM. Anyhow, greetings from SoCal. It is an incredibly somber day, but we will get thru these next 4 years. One way or another.

My knitting origin story is that a little over 8 years ago I was stressed out about the 2016 election and I desperately needed something to do with my hands. I had never considered myself a crafty person. Far from it, I am kind of a klutz. I was surprised at how much relaxation I found from a hobby so out of character for how I saw myself as a 40-something with no artistic skills. That stress knitting became rage knitting for a while and now I can't imagine going for more than a few days without picking up some kind of knitting project. Knitting has gotten me through some difficult times in the last 8 years, and I'm glad I have such a rewarding hobby to look forward to every day no matter what awful things are happening in the world. I'm so thankful for your podcast and the intelligence, humor, honesty, and emotional generosity you display with an audience of strangers.

I couldn't even knit today, you're my first 'media' of the day. Also, lost power 3 times then the generator quit and I spent hours in a cold dark house waiting for the emergency electrician to come (fixed!) so my bed bound mom can be cared for.....can't think of a single day when I have felt worse. Can't knit but chatting will help- thanks from someone alone with a severely demented non-verbal 98 yo. Knitting and dog rescue channels are the best for mood improvement.

Thank you for this. I’m not doing very well. Terrified for future. Would love to see the color dominance piece/s! I have a colorwork cowl ready to start. Using sport wt acrylic, checked pattern (plaid), so trying to practice carrying both in right hand (gauge w 2 hands=very inconsistent). Ladderback jacquard would be perfect for this, but no brain space.
I prefer a woolly wool for “sticky-ness” factor, but if I don’t stretch out sts on RHN toooo much, I should be good to go!

Thank you for pushing through for this video. I’m absolutely reeling with the election results. I have seven grandchildren, four girls who may have their lives endangered because doctors are afraid to stand up to the tyranny. Four of my grandchildren will always be seen as black even though my daughter, their mother is white. So possibly my one white grandson will be “safe” unless of course he is gay. We will hunker down, dig in and fight for those we love in whatever ways we can. I’m glad I’ve found your channel separate from TWT as I suspect they as a business need to be much more careful around politics.

It’s not necessary to berate people in America for voting the way they want. AND, clearly there were more Americans that thought we needed a change. And as it’s been said Kamala had 4 years to make changes and some people think the current administration tanked the economy, immigration, and had no clue what was going on. Unfortunately she was thrown into this situation with no time to figure things out. So, people have all differing opinions and shouldn’t be made to feel bad for their opinions. This is a knitting podcast, not a political podcast. I have to say, I really liked your knitting and spinning, how knowledgeable you are with both, and your knowledge about fiber. I love how you are passionate about running, singing at church. Both of those are not my thing but you light up when you talk about it. Please don’t ruin your podcast by talking about negative comments about the next 4 years, no one knows what will happen over the next 4 years, it could be very good, and he can also ruin a good thing he has done in the past. It was a crap shoot this election, both candidates didn’t have a lot going for them, we did see Trump do good things the first time around. So, I am praying he will continue with making America a better place to live for everyone.

Actually, Debbie, this is whatever kind of podcast Emma decides it to be….because it’s HER podcast. Just wanted to clarify on her behalf. - What draws me to some podcasts over others is the podcaster themselves. It’s great to be able to align ourselves with like-minded folks. ~

It is also nice to acknowledge that not all people agree on everything, she does a wonderful job with her knitting, spinning, and dying. Emma’s overall knowledge about fiber is amazing. It was the harshness of her words I Felt were unnecessary.

Thank you for posting something thoughtful here. I appreciate that you took the time to tell me your thoughts on the matter in a way that didn't involve hateful words. I think both disagreeing sides tend to use too many of those.
I would hope that my words did not feel too harsh for you, but as someone who feels very personally attacked by a lot of the policies of the right because of my demographics, I really did feel like I had to express how I felt this morning. I may or may not continue to talk about it, depending on how I feel with news cycles.
And Liz, thank you for backing me up here -- this *is* my podcast! And I'm so glad that I could be here for you in a positive way. I will of course continue to talk about knitting and spinning and all other things that I love, but I will probably also continue to talk about what's on my mind, mainly because it seems like most of the people who watch me, like you, Liz, really do like this and find it helpful. At the end of the day, a lot of us gravitate towards content that backs up what we already believe. And I appreciate that not everyone believes the same things.
At the end of the day, it is your choice whether or not you want to watch. If I am doing more harm than good to your psyche, I hope you do not, because I want to make people feel better, not worse. But as someone whose faith is very precious, I believe in being a safe space for marginalized people. So that is why I felt like it was important to say these things.

@@barnabyknits; I am up in Canada, so am somewhat distanced from your politics….but equally dismayed. - I believe that, at the end of the day, EVERYONE wants the same world…one of peace and prosperity. There are very very few bad apples, I have discovered. Unfortunately, we now live in silos….where we only hear the same ideas over and over. Gone are the days when you would get differing opinions, and actually stick around long enough to turn those competing ideas around in your mind. - Trump won for a variety of reasons….but I feel mostly due to a lot of decent people hurting who just want to pay their bills. The pandemic took the wind out of the world; many businesses failed. Terrible! But it’s not because of what any administration did. It’s a problem all over the globe! Though it’s easy to point fingers…because we live in silos. And people prefer easy, rather then embracing new ideas. - However, you did just place a convicted felon into the highest office in the land. This does not instil confidence. The world has a right to be taken aback. ~
