- Today, I'm thrilled to share one our latest projects: transforming the look and feel of the outdoor space at our little cabin with a modern DIY horizontal slat fence. We completely renovated our Tiny Lake House last year, but we knew it was time to give the backyard a facelift. So, Sean and I rolled up our sleeves and got to work, and the results are beyond satisfying! ❤ Subscribe to my channel for more DIYs: ua-cam.com/users/thediymommy?sub_co...

What a lot of work! And what lucky neighbours you have. Thanks for being transparent about the gifted lumber. It’s great you’re in a position where that was an option for you.
Thanks for watching! 🩷
You and Sean knocked it out of the park again!! Looks awesome!!
Wow, thanks!
Love the fence and the transformation but I love how your dog was making sure everything was done right, great project manager 🐶
Clean the old fence with mixture of pool clorine, water, and a sprayer. Use material to build assortment of window boxes, planters, and standup garden planters, wrap around bench around large tree, landscaping border, dog house shade structure, birdhouses.
Hi Christina. With the old wood. After a clean and sand. I’d make trays and coffee tables. Or wall art. Or dividers plant containers
Great idea!!
Love,love,love the fence!
I love your cabin and the fence just adds to the property-it’s a great place to hang outside.
We agree!
Looks great!
Waiting for your next rental redo😊
Thanks! We need a break now. 😂
Absolutely stunning! Now that’s not usually said about a fence but it looks amazing! Well done guys!
Your fence turned out beautiful. What a blessing to have you all work together.
As for the remains of the old fence, get a planer to clean them up and they'll look wonderful. We recently had our cedar deck replaced. It was in worse shape than your fence. You'd never know it after a few passes through our Dewalt planer. I'm going to draw up plans and make a sofa and other furniture for our new composite deck.
Wow what a property next door!
You could turn the old fence into a dining table top. And coffee table 😊
Wow what a big difference it made. Really nice. 😊🇨🇦
Love it!
MAJOR WORK! You all did Great 🙌
I wouldn't do this. Heck, I don't have the patience to put together your entry hall shoe or whatever would use for, cabinet, that I favor! 😂👍❤
You guys are good. It looks professionally done.
Wonderful job! The old wood could be used to make planters and window boxes. Another option would be to build a box to hold wood for the fire pit.
Looks fantastic!!!
Wow!! It looks amazing. My favourite style of fence🤩
Thank you so much 😊
Great job, it looks amazing !!
How beautiful!
I love what you did to the property. That fence looks amazing
Thanks so much!
Love all your hard work . Maybe you could do some close racks creating different shapes ,art ,woodburning scenes. Thank you for the Beautiful Smile. So nice to see hard working Family. God Bless 🙏
It turned out beautiful 😍
You’re my favorite decorator!! Everything you do is so beautiful 🤩! I’ve watched your videos for a while but I never have commented before. Thank you for your inspiration!
Thank you so much!!
It looks great.
That was a lot of work....but the payoff was spectacular!!!!
Looks great!!!👍🏻
Love it!! I was shopping at your store when video pop up. Going back to shopping!! All your products are so beautifully, having a hard time picking what I want to purchase!!!
Thanks for checking out my shop, I appreciate it! Just so you know I'll be closing it from tonight until Thursday while I'm away on a work trip, so make sure to order before or after that. 🩷
Stunning!!! So agree with your working with your family on DIY projects. I have great memories working with my family on a number of home projects. Happy weekend Christina. 🙋🏼♀️⚡️💫👏🏻
You guys are rock stars! ⭐️
Chicken coup, playhouse ect from old fence parts! Once painted it looks great
Absolutely love that fence! Great job🎉
Could you use the old fence and make planters out of some. The sky is the limit. Pots for around the property. Love how your new fence came out. I also love how much room you have in the backyard 🤗💓💞💕
Love the fence idea the modern look great
I love it. I wish I had your determination.
Looks GREAT! Make a wood walkway (with your old fence slats) like Laura on “Garden Answer” has. It’s a winding walkway through her garden. It looks Beautiful. They secured them into the ground with long (maybe 6 inch) long nails. Just a thought. Wish I had some to do it!
What a wonderful job!! You guys are excellent in all you do!!
Thank you so much!
❤❤❤
Your fence turned out gorgeous! I also love. Love the cabins color.
Thank you so much!
Gorgeous fence! It wull be magical in the spring and summer
I think so too; thank you!
It looks great!
Looks great!!
Hi Mam,
I have not seen you for a very long time. As a GM employee since the strike is over I have been working longer hours and rarely on social media. I was not on strike but the strikers made it harder for the working dealership parts depts to get parts to serve our customers. I am in the midst of sorting and packing my little flat (3rd floor no elevator) 610 square feet. I didn't reach my goal of buying a home when I was 25, 30, 40, 50 but, I have started my search this spring for a definite buy. I found last week a wonderful home to buy and I am waiting right now to see what I am approved for, for a loan. I have over 20% to put down to keep the mortgage low. This house is move in ready. Kitchen totally renovated in 2021 beautiful hardwood floors and the bathroom is orig. The front yard needs a face lift but backyard is awesome. The fence between the 2 yards is brand new and it's lovely but, the other fence belonging to the other neighbor is not so great. I have prayed for my own porch or patio and a small yard to replant my Mom's hydrangeas her brother dug up for each of us children. I have her mint growing in my kitchen dating back to my great grandmother's Victory Garden but, it would do better in the ground. I also at this house would have room for a small veggie garden.
I agree, projects with parents are the best. I am my Dad's traveling companion at 85 but, not a lot of projects now. I bought a drill for myself for Christmas and one for him. It's a mini small drill just enough power for my crafts and for him to hang his cross collection each time he gets a new one. In his 70s he put on his own very large deck and I helped during the snow and in the 90 degree days. It was 3 months before my Mom passed away in 2021 a beautiful spring day with thousands of cicadas buzzing all around and she and I were taking up the old rotten wood that framed out her flower beds as we were making new beds with brick. My Mom collected rocks wherever she went and now I have her small ones I collected from her yard to use in my future yard. Her house and yard were the best and I moved in 2019 long before she became sick. We had plans to go to Brimfield antiquing that summer and Budapest the following winter. She loved my decorating ideas and we loved reading decorating magazines and drinking coffee on her beautiful nautical porch. My Mom and I took mile long walks every other day and I would be hugging and puffing behind and she would be 10 feet in front. I was hoping to stay in her house but, the higher powers had other plans.
My Dad owned his own painting business and put himself thru college and seminary. My Mom's step dad owned his own construction company and my Mom's uncle owned his own saw mill in Maine where us 3 kids would work a couple summers. From 1985 to 1991 I worked at a lumber yard and collected many scraps for projects. I made all my own photo frames with molding and my miter box.
For your old fence if it's pressure treated I assume you cannot have the wood inside. I do not, make a headboard and paint it pretty or sand it and stain it. How about those 4 to 5 welcome signs vertically you paint and put on front porches. Make a pallet type of plant holder with metal hooks for small plants to hang such as people do with pallets. Paint signs to hang horizontally to sell or give as gifts saying BLESSED or Grateful etc.
So nice to see you. I must clock in now in my brain and put in a good day of packing and organizing. Blessings to you and yours,
Rebekah in VA
I love your ideas, Rebekah, and the house you're looking at sounds wonderful. Cheering you on!
I always thought that the nice side of the fence should face the neighbors. Some places this is the law. Look nice though.😊
Our neighbours love it! We all think both sides look great.
Where is this that I would provide the guy didn't pay for it the better side? Just very interested never heard of this before.
So, you didn’t use concrete to secure your posts? Just dirt and gravel?
How about a potting station with the old fence? Nice video!!
That would be a great project!
Furniture from the old fence boards. Shelves and little statement tables. They’d add a rustic touch and if modern shapes or additions were included they wouldn’t look too old and battered.
Great ideas!
Great job! It looks gorgeous. How often do you need to reseal it to keep it looking great?
Thank you! It seems to last for quite a few years like this, so we'll see!
I am wondering if renting the cabin is still going well? I know a lot of people are not using Air B and B as much any more, so I wonder if this has had an effect on the rentals for you guys?
Thanks, it's still going well! Airbnb is only a small part of our marketing strategy.
It's a nice looking fence. Did you do both sides, hard to tell in the video? What's across the back?
I would love to have materials donated for projects!
You can see the back when we add the 2x2 braces. Thanks!
@@thediymommy - I'll have to look again, thank you.
Great job on the fence but here are a few things to consider.
Be careful using the old treated wood!!! Older treated wood used chemicals that are carcinogenic; the newer treated does not use those chemicals and should not be carcinogenic.
Also, before starting a fence check with local officials. We live near a beach and frequently have hurricanes. To add more stability, we are required to dig out fence posts holes at least 3 feet down and must use cement to stabilize them. Everywhere is different so please check before starting! I would hate for someone to have to tear down a new fence and start over!!
Looks like the finished side faces your yard with rough, majority of supports, facing your neighbors. This is code violation in most communities. Rough side needs to face your yard. Was a building permit secured?
This is permitted in our municipality, but like I mentioned in the video - check with your own municipality regulations before building a fence.
I find it funny to put in a fence so the other guy can enjoy the good side. I have never run into this where we live. The good side is always to the guy that put it in, unless it is a project split by the neighbor.
Love it!
