I have NEVER, in almost 60 years, thought of a brush gun as a gun that literally shot through brush. It has always meant to me, a short to mid-range rifle that is easy handling.
I figure a brush gun? Short carbine/rifle, IRON SIGHTS! That's easy to Carry Through the brush! Wouldn't shoot through the brush for anything! Unless I knew i was being shot at!
I think ethically shooting through brush of any kind is a no go. A brush gun to me is something that carries well through the brush rather than shooting through it. A good handy gun that doesn't hang up as bad when trampling through that thick stuff. Always make sure you have clear line of sight. Many accidents have occurred shooting through brush at what people thought was a deer.
Well said - it's impossible to overstate the importance of having a clear line of sight when you're in the field. We hear the term "brush gun" used often, and we wanted to start a conversation on the topic and hopefully, clear up some misconceptions!
My thoughts are.. A brush gun is short lightweight points fast shoots 180 grain or heavier bullets and is accurate ! Not a rifle to shoot through brush! 16 to 20 inch barrel.. moderate range setup.. open sights or low power variable
@@robertwalters4676 that's where I've hunted my entire life.. in the woods of central Pennsylvania! Long barreled rifles are okay.. but you'll wish they were shorter when you are maneuvering through the brush :) Not shooting through it !
I have that same gun and I have been a little reluctant to put a scope on it just for the esthetics but that actually doesn't look bad at all! Nice video and thanks for posting.
I agree with your assessment as well as some other comments. To me a brush gun or that term is not for the capability to shoot through brush but it being a shorter handier rifle with heavier for caliber bullets to take down game in thicker country. That’s definitely a beautiful rifle and one of my favorites along with the All Weather. Speaking of the AW I am hoping that Henry chambers the 360 Buckhammer by Shot Show. I recently moved to Ohio and would love a straight wall lever gun and the 360 BH is an appealing middle ground.
I like this type of practical test above anything else that the scientific or ballistic testers come up with. I have been in the field, and I know that this test is what counts more than the tests indoors with equipment.
Whoa! There for second i thought this guy was promoting shooting through the brush . As a Hunter who cant afford a Henry rifle (sucks to be me) The rifle i chose is a short youth model rifle it actually works well when i have to go through brush
Brush gun? A large caliber, high powered weapon intended to stop the charge of a dangerous game animal at close quarters. At least that was what it meant until somewhere in the early nineteen seventies when gun magazine writers started calling any short barreled .35+ a brush gun. Then they started debating which one was most accurate shooting through brush. Now, any short gun used to hunt wooded areas gets named a brush gun (not a 'woods gun'). No longer does the term bring to mind the classics, like Hemmingway's .577Nitro Express, TR's 500/.450H&H, or Capstick's .470. Your 60-yard target in the video shows why the former use of the term was better.
I'm sorry here in Pennsylvania we tend to use a 3030 as a "brush gun " short fast handling and not afraid to get a little scratch up how tough are the deer you hunt with a 4570?
I don’t take a first shot through brush but have sent a few quick back up shots… Looking for your opinion, I had a big boy steel 44mag but hard times had to sell before I could hunt with it. Getting a new Henry soon and want color case hardened. I don’t need a 45/70 so I am stuck between 44mag or 30/30… maybe a 360 color case in the future?? What would you choose?? Thank you
Question, I've been looking at putting that same scope on mine for an upcoming hunt. I typically just hunto with the iron sites, but this year, i may have to use a scope. With those scope mounts, will I be able to leave the rear sight on?
@dalebass2192 yes. That's why I was asking. His rear sight is removed. So, I'm wondering if he had to so it wouldn't interfere and if he had low or medium height rings.
You youngsters need to talk to your elders once in a while. You CARRY a shorter, quick handling, easy to carry "brush gun" through the woods. Not SHOOT through BRANCHES ! Good Lord, this generation is in trouble.

Great gun my son took over my 4570 and he's done great with it. I'm using the 360 and absolutely loving it .
Brush gun gets real when big grizzly breaks through the brush and comes after you.

I love my Henry blued steel 45-70. I had it on the range last week and it’s a sweet rifle.

What ever the case may be that is one fine gun.
I think of a brush or woods gun as an easy to carry lightweight lever action rifle like a .30-30 or .45-70.

I've never shot through brush In my life and never will. Thanks for the video.
As a combat vet, there is no (I mean zero) gun that shoots accurately THROUGH brush.
First off, as a combat vet, why do you refer to a rifle as a gun?

If you get tall scope mounts then yeah you can leave on iron sights it would depend on scope if you mounted it low on the rifle
@dalebass2192 yes. That's why I was asking. His rear sight is removed. So, I'm wondering if he had to so it wouldn't interfere and if he had low or medium height rings.
I was carrying my gun while hunting in the brush the other day. 🤯
Brush gun is a myth. No such thing.
Unless you have a clean shot, you probably shouldn’t take it.

Interesting. I wonder if a small branch would deflect the bullet more than if you shot through a half inch piece of plywood.
Why?
