  • one of the most promising new technologies in law enforcement is forensic genealogy, in which police upload unknown DNA to open source DNA databases like GEDmatch and track down a suspect through their family tree. in each of these four cases, a relative curious about their ancestry provided police with the information they needed to finally make an arrest in a cold case.
    all suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

      It feels good IF they are still alive at the time the findings are reported. Still, for those perps who are deceased, I suppose in a small way, it gives the families relief and maybe some comfort that the murderer is no longer hurting others. However, to those seniors who are still alive and caught, then dying in jail would be their best option.

    • @mercury_rising
      @mercury_rising 4 роки тому

      Probably because she was a sex worker and he could just claim he had been there for that (which explains the DNA) and he had nothing to do with the murder. It's circumstantial. Arguably, there could have been a number of men in that apartment at various times who also had the means and opportunity to commit the crime.

    • @KristenHammerback-pk5wy
      @KristenHammerback-pk5wy 4 роки тому

      Yes. They are a defense lawyer, meaning they care only about the criminal and not at all about the victim, their loved ones, or future victims. Period. Most defense lawyers are sociopaths just like their clients.

    • @ashleywillis1607
      @ashleywillis1607 3 роки тому

    How can you fight extradition to Alaska, when Maine is also a State? I think the states need to get together and agree that suspects should automatically be transferred, unless there's a good reason not to

    • @tinameyer7080
      @tinameyer7080 5 років тому +2

      Legally, if you are a citizen/resident of ANY particular state- no OTHER State can just "kidnap" you and take you elsewhere. With that being said, in a criminal case, all the requesting State has to prove is a "compelling" public reason to require the defendants' presence in the requesters state. Thus, a person in this scenario can "fight extradiction" but it isn't AT ALL likely that their "fight" will be successful. It's usually just a way to stall and delay.

    • @tinameyer7080
      @tinameyer7080 5 років тому +4

      @belinda hawkins I don't necessarily disagree. In most cases it's just a stall, but, lawyers are REALLY good at that :) In some (rare) cases they fight it because they are being prosecuted in the current jurisdiction on other crimes-which is at least a more valid reason....in any event...it'll all get worked out one way or the other.

      if that's true... [shakes head]
      one step forward, two steps back.
      i wouldn't think they could really do that. even on places like youtube and that, it's says explicitly that if the law asked for our information, they have to fork it over. that they can not and will not put Their butts on the line if We do something stupid that gets us into hot water with the law.
      i get it, if they did indeed make that foolish choice. they want to try protecting themselves from future civil litigation for possible breach of privacy. but, honestly, i don't think they can really stop the law from doing what needs doing.
      but i guess. if they did, they did. we'll see how well that turns out for them in the long run.
      they may find any help they Were receiving dry up because nobody would want to be associated with something covering for possible predators. they won't be the Only ones thinking of covering their "assets" then. not to mention there are few agencies that think too highly of any entity that obstructs justice on any scale. especially in these times of home land security and so forth.

    Genealogy is an even more important tactic for law enforcement then fingerprints. The cold cases and future cases that have no leads but have dna, can now be solved with just a distant relative being in a database. Opposed to a fingerprint were you have to have that exact person and exact print. True game changer. Very interested in hearing more of these solved cases and enjoy your videos.

    I think the caliber of handgun you’re referring to is an H&R .32, not .22. The Harrington & Richardson company, no longer in business, took the ordinary .32 revolver cartridge and made it more powerful as the .32 H&R Magnum. Magnum refers to a longer cartridge packed with more gunpowder to shoot the same size bullet with more velocity, for example the .357 Magnum is the same bullet as the .38 Special but more powerful (the bullet itself is actually .357 inches in diameter, not .38 🤷‍♂️). A .32 H&R Magnum will also shoot ordinary .32 rounds, some variations of which are pretty tame, and this could explain why no one reported hearing gunshots in the dorm.

    It’s great when they have established some kind of normal life for themselves; family, job etc, and then.....BOOM!!....that knock on the door - justice comes calling............

      Imagine realizing that the only reason you exist is because they didn't catch your scumbag parent when the crime took place....

    That they're able to have normal jobs and be killing someone too is unbelievable! I don't see what it profits them cause they will be eating awful food and people thinks they won't get caught. Their carelessness catches them Everytime!

    I almost moved into that address in the early 90s but had bought a house instead bc there was a recession and real estate was cheap.

    I think Westrom will get off. His trial is set for March 22. He'll claim he was one of her clients and be acquitted

    I love seeing them catch the bad guys even if it takes years. I wonder about the familial dna system they use ? if it's legal to investigate family members who are innocent of crimes (but have similar dna )without probable cause. I don't know if there is a constitutional rights violation there or not?

    While DNA goes a long way to pointing to the offender there have been questionable cases. One of which a man was fingered by DNA for a cold case but the DNA of a criminal behind bars was also fingered but the trouble was he would have been 3 at the time.. I 'll see if I can locate that story (very old one)

      @Carol Bogdanowitz I think so. I do remember the victim was looking for a ride home from college and her demise happened during that ride.. I believe it was spring break(I think this happened in the 70s). The guy convicted was married with children and from what I understand was an otherwise upstanding citizen.

      Did it match him exactly? It could have been a partial match to him and was therefore on of his relatives.

    • @_oly_241

      @@muls9571 I am not sure about that but the fact that a criminals DNA was also discovered, who would have been 3 at the time of the crime, makes one really question the quality of the testing that was done. Moreover, I don't understand with that sort of significant inconsistency how the case would have gone anywhere.

    The day of the serial killer has come to a end. I hope they all know that. They will either stop or never start or they will make sure nothing is left behind. Maybe burn crime scenes down??? "Jean was a sex worker who would bring men back to her place". Hun, just say in-calls.

      justjess1986 because that would be wrong. In-call is the John comes to them, at their home or place they work out of. Out-call is the hooker comes to them. She properly identified that the worker was in her home and not a motel/hotel

    I find these cold case files very interesting.
    Thank God we don’t live in Mexico where only 5% of crimes are even prosecuted.
    Why don’t you also post the cold case reports in a separate playlist.
