You're asking moi if Shane grows on me? You had it coming, Sodor! Always knew that Shane would learn to love me - that brooding guy in the corner with stubbles and a bit of an attitude? Your short with the bad guy from "The Incredibles" caught me perfectly
the town gossip is a good point but let me raise you one, think what the gossip must have been when he moved in, whereas we got "did you hear about the new farmer, I hope they're doing well!" he probably got something more along the lines of "did you hear about Marnie's nephew, he's such a mess. maybe if he drank less he could take care of Jas so Marnie doesn't have to pick up the slack" and i know many of the people reading this don't want to imagine their favorite characters saying something like that, but the beauty of stardews writing is that the characters are flawed
@@sodorart yea, small towns can be great and awful in that way. Even how Alex was likely talked about. Hearing all the stuff about his Dad, his drinking and then Shane also struggling with Alcohol. I am sure Alex said something to him about his drinking. I love Alex, but I could easily see him get angry at Shane for being like his dad.
I like to imagine Shane’s brain betraying him with regret about his attitude, just a little. He’s going to bed next to the sleeping farmer, he brushes some hair out of their face and thinks to himself how happy he is. Then as he’s falling asleep he remembers a rude thing he said or awful thought he had about his best friend and love of his life, he’s laying there like “Whyyy?” In the morning he wakes up first and makes breakfast, saying he just felt like it while being a bit clingy. Embrace him!
I have farms with almost every marriage candidate and Shane is by far my favorite. That one is my second oldest save and I just keep going back to it at random times. He reminds me a lot of myself during a really difficult time in my life. I was in an accident involving a brain trauma with a long recovery and some permanent deficits that led to a sharp decline in my mental health. Depression is something I am likely going to live with for the rest of my life, and happiness and survival are more about managing it than magically becoming all better. Shane reminds me that love is something people don’t have to be perfect to deserve, and playing with him as the marriage partner lets me treat him how I want to be treated. It makes me feel really safe in that way. I realize his addiction and mental health issues are triggering for a lot of people, but I lost friends in real life due to what I went through and it’s made me realize someone being triggered in that way can make people (or people and characters) incompatible without either person (or character) necessarily being wrong or bad.
I also came from a small town and I can attest: people do talk. A lot. So Shane absolutely would have heard about the farmer all the time. Oh, and I did live in one of the largest cities in the world and can also attest: most people don't have the patience to deal with some random stranger going "Good morning!" or trying to engage with small talk. For us, in a video game that's normal. Video game logic if you will. But if you do that in a large city? Yeah, people will be confused and Shane's reaction is normal. Also we didn't just got a nice plot of land, but it is basically about the size of Pelican Town itself, much larger than Marnie's ranch who, along with Robin's place, seems to be the largest real state in town until the farm got revitalized. And at least in my neck of the woods, sometimes rural proprieties get sold and become whole neighborhoods so yeah, that's a lot. In a sense, if the player wanted instead of keep being a farmer they could make some crazy money with the land alone. Meanwhile, Shane is basically a single parent who relies on favors to get by and realistically would never have the opportunity to learn what he would really want to do. That probably stings a lot.
Oof. Never thought about it like that. To be fair to Shane, I've resented people for less. You know, it just occurred to me that despite Shane being Jas' legal guardian she doesn’t move in to the farm with him if the player marries him. So that's weird.
@@andrewtyrell4795 I wish there was a dialogue about this or a cutscene. Ultimately, I'm glad she doesn't move to the farm because Marnie has been taking care of her, not so much Shane... so her best bet is with Marnie IMO
I think Marnie, as Jas' closest relative,is Jas' legal guardian. Shane is merely Jas' godfather. He swore to step in in case of a sad case like this ,but he probably didn't consider that this would be the case - he just lost his friend, and now he's left here
@@sodorart You're probably right, I just thought it might be nice to at least have the option to have her join the family since by then Shane is on the mend and I probably unemployed.
Not related to the video but I have a theory about why Pelican Town is dying town with almost no space for progres. This place was never build as a town to live in. It start with coal mine, today known as a quarry mine. Community centre was oryginaly build as a hotel for mine workers. They suposed to sleep in the hotel during work days and travel back home in weekends and holidays. But some of them stay even on their off work days or bring their families with them and they needed some place to relaks. Someone build saloon and Yoba shrine for them and playground, shop and some houses for their families. At the same time some rare minerals found in the mine attract scientist and collectors who build museum. After some time old marinier visit this place with his son, Willy (In this theory Old Marinier an Birdie are copule an Willy is their son). They make a deal with hotel owners. Offered one day long trips to the tropical island and share the money with person who advertise this idea and bring turist. The city was growing, more atractions for turist was made and everyone seemd happy. But three bad things happend in a short period of thime. Explosion led to the closure of the mine, earthquake blocked rirload and train never stopped in Petican Town again. And storm killed Old marinier and damaged boat to the point Willy no longer can bring turist to the Ginger Island. After some time of grieving Willy ask Levis for help to repair the boat but Levis said is only Willys problem and refuse to help. Levis was at a time unexperienced as a mayor and he didn't see how important those trips are to the local economy. Mine workers come back to their homes becouse there was no job for them, turist stoped visiting after trips stop happening. Only people who stil move to the town was people like Leah who want to escape loud city and their previous lifes. At first it was god enouth. Levis bring the idea of festivals and community centre, creating traditions that bring people together. In his eyes it suposed to attract more people who would enjoy simpler lifes. It worked but bring much less money tan a turist so town start falling apart and Levis pride don't let him admit he make some wrong decisions and ask other townsfolk for help. Thats why he rely on us that much. He can ask for farmers help in secret and not destroy image and authority he thinks he has in others people eyes.
Shane is alot of people I know, stuck in unfortunate circumstances and caught in the mundane rat race just to make ends meet. It can be grueling and exhausting and makes people bitter towards life for sure. Very epic video as always sodor
I didn’t like Shane when I first played the game in 2022, but then I found out about his backstory from another yt video, and now I honestly relate to him a lot
Shane was one I married first because his introvertedness reminded me of my real-life wife. We met in college and she wouldn't even speak to me for the first three days I sat next to her. I get the mistrust of an outgoing person from an intrevert. Just like Shane sometimes they just need a friend who doesn't judge or get upset when they are short with them or absent. Nice vid.
bahahaha the thumbnail is everything xD But great video!! I was one of those people who didn't really make an effort to get to know shane because he told me off and I didn't want to bother, but seeing things framed from his perspective it makes sense. I will give him a new change!!
I think some people cannot deal with people not wanting to engage with them, both in game and in real life. I always thought Shane was a little rude, but like those are his 0 heart dialogues, he isn't lying, the farmer doesn't know him, why would he want to talk to the farmer?? And people forgetting there is like 30 people in this town is funny as hell. The gossip in Stardew Valley must be insane.
Honestly when I started playing the game (literally august 1st this year) I did it cause I've heard a lot and wanted to try it and I had a Lot of preconceptions about the npcs, like Alex a stereotypical jock, or Shane someone who and I quote "needs to be fixed" but OMG I'm glad I took the time to know these characters, like Shane really grew up on me, cause of his story, his relationship with Marnie and Jas, and how much he evolves as a person and how much he changes trough his heart events and I truly loved that even though we are there to support him, he's willing to change and looks for help himself and does the change by himself not because of the farmer, easily he became my second favorite bachelor (the first one is Sam BTW IDK why I tend to gravitate towards him and falling for him like 90% of the time) but I have to say that I agree 100% with everything you said in the video, and also congrats for the 5K you definitely deserve much more subs cause your content is truly amazing! 😁
I might forgive him when later in the game... but he's too fragile that he might get to relapse. Been with the an exfriend in real life who's addicted with substance and relapsed many times over and over again until you just stopped helping them; forgive them and then go away from their lives otherwise they will drag you in the end. Shane reminds me of him.
