Hopkins is fantastic in this film, and Ridley Scott's direction is utterly superb and the cinematography in Florence is beautiful. Hannibal is a monster, but the character is played so well, that you don't hate him. He's an insane murdering psychopath, but he loves and respects Clarice and almost understands her. He understands her more than anyone else. The musical score in the film is beautiful.
ElizabethR1558 I agree entirely with your comments. I keep coming back to this film and the nuances of Hopkins’ performance. He is superb. One of my favourite scenes is where Lecter lays his hand on Pazzi’s shoulder. When he returns to the projector and Pazzi is pretending to speak to Allegra, the chloroform bottle is right there on the table. And then he shows him his ancestor.
Are you kidding, he was a psychopathic killer who hid behind a knowledge of opera. You found pity with this character, I find that incredibly disturbing.
An amazingly emotional, powerful and beautiful piece of music. I had this played at our wedding, and I have it as the second piece of music for my funeral; the first being Adagio for Strings (Samuel Barber) and the last being Lost but Won (Hans Zimmer) - all have been chosen for what they represent, and what they mean to me personally.
Not just the music, also the topic is beautifull. Its from the 3th sonnet, in Dante's 'La Vita Nuova'. The work he wrote beside his "La Divina Comedia". Its vert beautifull. This one and Bocceli's 'Con te partirò' are my two favorite short "opera" songs in italian. (Long ones: Mozarts Don Giovanni)
It is the music played during communion at my mother’s funeral. She was brought in while “Once Upon a Time in America” was played, with Ave Maria after the gospel was read and the theme from “Somewhere in Time” was played when existing the church.
Vide cor meum (See my heart) is an aria composed by Irish composer Patrick Cassidy based on Dante Alighieri's Vita Nova, specifically on the sonnet A ciascun'alma presa, third chapter. The song was produced by Patrick Cassidy and Hans Zimmer, and was performed by Libera / The Lyndhurst Orchestra, conducted by Gavin Greenaway. The main voices belong to Danielle de Niese and Bruno Lazzaretti who sing some fragments taken from Vita Nova
This is one of my all-time favorite pieces of music. Hannibal, though very dark like the other Hannibal movies, has always had an historic and artistic aspect. Vide Cor Meum is also used in the movie "Kingdom of Heaven" starring Orlando Bloom during the scenes when Jerusalem, the much loved King of Jerusalem suffering with leprosy, finally succumbs to this most dreaded of diseases at that time, i.e. the Crusades. It is an incredibly poignant scene.
Ridley Scott can create majestic moments in cinema. He's got such a rich vision for history and knows exactly how to convey it to audience leaving none of our senses to boredom ....Gladiator provided no shortage as well.
See My Heart Chorus: And thinking of her Sweet sleep overcame me I am your master See your heart And of this burning heart Your heart (Chorus: She trembling) Obediently eats. Weeping, I saw him then depart from me. Joy is converted To bitterest tears I am in peace My heart I am in peace See my heart
Everytime I hear this Opera, It makes me cry....I absolutely get lost with this most beautiful song. Sung from Angels above the heavens. To be In love with something that is bigger than you or me and you have absolutely no control over it.
great piece of music...I remember the day I was driving the desert in August-205 and listening the soundtrack...I could not stop the tears coming from my eyes when the song started playing...
"All good things to those who wait, I've wated but how long can you and poor old little jakie boy wait, our little Billy looking for that next special lady"
paul g He reads the play in English after the play finishes then gives the piece to the police officers wife. You may have read the book? He explains then also
I want to be his next "patient." The thought of what he would do with me makes my head spin! But, I'm just another garden variety manic depressive. Tedious. Very tedious. So he probably wouldn't like the way I taste. :(
One of my favorite moments was when Lecter looks at Pazzi. It's not just some creepy stare, just by looking at him, he figured out Pazzi sold him out for money.
this music is beautiful &haunting one of my favourites of classic & the film is excellent i love Hopkins he's an amazing actor we should be proud he's one of our British talents his wit reminds me of my wonderful Dad I lost.08.10.2013..love u Daddy..10.04.2016 "
no surprise that there are no dislikes here,, one of the best actors of all time, the best music and a famous and just excellent movie featured here so many feelings touched at one time here
Hear hear! I'm currently reading the book for probably the 11th time and the ending is perfect. The film, although superb, was a disappointment at the end. They should have been together.
I think the score is beautiful in and off itself, its a wonderful meaning and delight to the ears. I find the soprano so well valued in this, and also the high notes of the woman, its a treasure to behold.
Hannibal (the book.... whatever about the movie) was a beautiful piece of work. And this music was one of the few things that the movie did right to honor the idea of the book.
The image of Clarice as the deceased Beatrice was inspired. That wasn't in the film. It should have been; affectively, she's Hannibal's Beatrice. Just beautiful.
Tom Harris, who wrote The Red Dragon, didn’t publish another book for 8 years afterwards, probably scared the crap out of him like it did me when I read it. All the ensuing books were fantastic, too. But sometimes parts of a book are better than the movies and vice versa. Although Sir Anthony Hopkins is a great actor, I actually liked Brian Cox’s portrayal of Hannibal Lecter better in Manhunter, the title they gave the Red Dragon when the made the movie. He based his performance on a Scottish serial killer and in some ways was more believable as evil incarnate. He absolutely gave me the creeps in his initial conversation with Will, the FBI agent. While Hopkins brought a sophistication to Lecter which aptly fit the persona of the character in the books, the director decided to make him a little endearing at times, a mistake because Lecter was amoral and couldn’t even begin to understand human feelings, like Ted Bundy. No matter how charming he appeared to be, he wouldn’t hesitate to inflict any manner of atrocities on someone if he felt they were a threat. Great books, great movies, I hope they make one more.
An absolutely outstanding piece of composition. I tried for years to work with my clients and Hans with no success. My father, who passed a good few years ago, was a veritable Professor of classic music from the age of 11 until his death at 83. I played him this piece and he didn't know it but thought it "had potential"...! I had assumed that it was a classical piece. Absolutely my favourite. I think that Hans and his wonderful female string arranger/co-composer (who's name I forget, sorry) should compose an album...! H
This was not composed by Hans Zimmer, this piece was composed by Patrick Casady...he was asked for a single aria and ended up writing a complete opera...
Interesting. When I enquired about it a few years ago I was told that it was Zimmer and a female composer whose name escapes me. I knew he hadn't done it on his own (as good as he is!) Would love to hear the whole opera....
Hywel Williams I have looked for the whole opera couldn't find it but I suspect it was just scored. I wrote to Patrick via his website but didn't get a reply
I just finished watching the last episode of Hannibal from season one... (i know, im far behind) But HOLY SHIT! That ending was crazy. I almost cried. btw great song

I've never listened to any operatic music in my 42 years, untill I heard this, wow and I can't stop listening.
Patrick Cassidy is one of the greatest living composers, who deserves a lot more recognition than he is getting.
agreed

So typically portraying Dante’s unrequited love and admiration for Beatrice, Hannibal/Clarice!
Clarice respected Lecter and treated him like a gentleman.
I must say that eating rude people does have its pros. Ta ta
Are you kidding, he was a psychopathic killer who hid behind a knowledge of opera. You found pity with this character, I find that incredibly disturbing.
Interesting fact: the opera scene was filmed at the Pazzi Cathedral in Florence.
hermoso
What a masterpiece this movie is. I always think of it as an opera
probably the most beautiful passage of music ever
Bah thats darude sandstorm
WTF,chav
I agree.
juste sublime
This is what you hear when walking into Heaven. I hope.
I love Hopkins' performance. He transforms what is human into something sublimely divine.
Jesus, you are so beautiful. God bless you.
Oh yes absolutely! I never seen anything quite like it
One of the most beautiful pieces of music ever created.
Juliane Moore sua linda! Lecter, sedutor implacável! A dupla perfeita e o som magnífico!
the books , the films , the music , masterpieces
Played this song using surround sound at the chapel on my wedding day.
Same here... not in a chapel but in an altar outside. It was a sublime moment...
Could listen to this all day. Like a chorus of angels.
One of the most beautiful & haunting pieces of music.
Utterly sublime.
One of the greatest movie villains, and one of my favorite villains, for he is educated and with class despite being too dangerous.
+MutantsInDisguise I agree!
Only dangerous to those who mean him harm, like all creatures deemed dangerous.
Debbie Newman also dangerous to those he found impolite, incompetent or just happen to be in his way.
Que buena noche para todos aquellos momentos de música
TheDarkTicoKnight12
Wouldn’t call him a villain, more of a watcher over good people
Every victim had it coming, gruesome maybe but never the less

Absolutely beautiful....brings tears to my eyes, and an inner peace I have been seeking for many years. Thank you.
This is the music I'm having at my funeral as my coffin is brought into the church. It's the most beautiful thing I've ever heard.

Its vert beautifull. This one and Bocceli's 'Con te partirò' are my two favorite short "opera" songs in italian. (Long ones: Mozarts Don Giovanni)
Serious? People will wonder if dr Lecter is hanging around.
It is the music played during communion at my mother’s funeral. She was brought in while “Once Upon a Time in America” was played, with Ave Maria after the gospel was read and the theme from “Somewhere in Time” was played when existing the church.
Good song for that! Mine will be, The Book Of Love, with Peter Gabriel

great piece of music...I remember the day I was driving the desert in August-205 and listening the soundtrack...I could not stop the tears coming from my eyes when the song started playing...
Beautifull music, and I love how its edited to show the truly twisted "love story" between Lecter and Clarice.
Patrick Cassidy (born 1956 in Claremorris, County Mayo) is an Irish classical composer.
"Hello, Will."
"...Hello, Dr. Lecter..."
+dlausactor6373 Hello, Clarice!
+Marcos Reis thank you, Barney
+dlausactor6373 That part was done beautifully
AMAZING!!! I watched over and over again!
"All good things to those who wait, I've wated but how long can you and poor old little jakie boy wait, our little Billy looking for that next special lady"
I was shocked to hear this on the Hannibal season 1 finale episode
I was ecstatic that they included it on S1 finale because I recalled hearing it in the film, and I'm glad they connected it all together. Fitting.
Me too!!!!! I've noticed many other things taken from others from the movies.
Yes. What a treat. I was overjoyed.
I bought the sound track of this movie for this one song...BEAUTIFUL ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL...
Essa música toca a minha alma!
renata santoro , É vdd! lindo de mais! O Hannibal pode ser canibal, mas de música ele entende.
hannibal um bom filme com uma trilha sonora fantastica show demais
Beautiful opera. Love it. So peaceful and majestic piece of music. Peace
Italian = Vide Cor Meum
English = You Watch My Heart
Spanish = Mira/Ve Mi Corazón
+Nick Hooltea It's latin. Not italian
+Nick Hooltea
It is latin for "look into my heart"
paul g He reads the play in English after the play finishes then gives the piece to the police officers wife. You may have read the book? He explains then also
Nick Hooltea Not 'See with the heart'?
Vide: Imperativ von videre (sehen): Siehe
Cor: Herz
Meum: mein
Deutsch: Siehe mein Herz!
English: See my heart!
He's not a villain, he's dissapointed with humanity. A mysantrop.
+Haereticus Sacrilegum Exactly.
word. Just don't be rude, or crude to Dr. Lector!
I want to be his next "patient." The thought of what he would do with me makes my head spin! But, I'm just another garden variety manic depressive. Tedious. Very tedious. So he probably wouldn't like the way I taste. :(
Very good point you make. His disdain for society's incorrigible behavior is his motive....hence only preferring to eat the free range rude
Free range rude. That is one of the best things I have ever heard, or read!
One of my favorite moments was when Lecter looks at Pazzi. It's not just some creepy stare, just by looking at him, he figured out Pazzi sold him out for money.
She looks as though she could be, so classically beautiful!

Used this as the processional song in my wedding. I've always wondered if anyone there recognized it or, if they did, knew the meaning of it.
Its from a poem by dante. In which he falls in love as a young boy with a girl called Beatrice. She does not notice him so he offers her his heart.
