⁴ᴷ R62A 7 Train being Transferred from Corona Yard to Westchester Yard

  • The remaining R62As on the 7 line are being moved off of the 7 line. In a few weeks, it is entirely likely that the 7 line will be completely made up of R188-type equipment. Here we see a consist of R62A-type cars being transferred from the 7 line to the 6 line. After this set, just two sets of R62As remain in use on the 7 line. Enjoy!

    Nice video! Sad to see the R62As leaving the 7 Line though, remember riding those when I was younger and that was the only rolling stock the 7 used. So yeah we all need to see it one last time before they are gone for good.

    Yes. Very interesting. They used a combination of moves from the BMT lines and IND lines to get the 7 train to Westchester Yards and turn them into 6 trains.

    I've always wondered how the trains from the Flushing Line got to the 7th Avenue and Lexington Avenue lines. Seems the people who built the IRT would have made a provision in Manhattan for an easier transfer when the IRT was being built. Back then they had the money and the space to do it.

    • @blankspace_kxng
      @blankspace_kxng 4 роки тому

      Impossible. The 7 Cannot run BMT routes like Bedford Park Blvd on the B/D. The 7 Train is a IRT routed train. Therefore no. Also the 7 would have to switch into the N/W's Territorry to do so. The R62A does not meet platform length requirements to run on a BMT line.
      For the 7 to even be on that part of the city it would need to be on various different routes that the 62 does not meet requirementz

    *When 7 train decided to move his final R62 to the west chester yard
    7: yo 6 train, I'm gonna send an R62 to you
    6: Ill give u another of my r142As if you do
    7: 6 train, its gonna be a long journey, but ok
    6: You are able to depart right now
    *At Queensboro plaza flushing bound track
    7: Hey N train, Im gonna send a R62 to west chester yard, can I use your line for a while
    N: Its the only way, why not?
    7:I thought you was gonna say no
    N: Nah man, 6 train called me that 7 train will go all the way to west chester depot with many switches and all
    7: I might switch at 39 ave, where the W went express in 2001 on that track
    N: So where are you gonna end?
    7: Atlantic Ave then ill follow the D
    N: Gotchu
    *At atlantic Ave-Barclays Center
    7: Hi D train, can i use your line all the way to beford park blvd?
    D: Why though?
    7: I need to send a R62 to west chester yard
    D: Oh yeah, 6 train came to tell me, and 4 train says he will welcome you to beford parkway blvd
    7:Ok then
    *At bedford Park Blvd, the R62 switched from D line to the 4 line
    7: So 4 train, ima roll down to 86 st then reverse
    4: ok, but6 train says he's in a hurry
    7: Can i use the express track of yours
    4: I don't need it but don't know why
    7: Ok, so 86 st then i switch
    4: Correct
    *Later at 86 st
    6: your finally here! the last thing you have to do is take it to west chester yard
    7: No more switches and reverses for me now
    6: If you can get it in by 30 minutes ill give u a R142A for trade
    7: Is it ok if i use that express track of yours?
    6:Ok, whatever you want
    *At west chester yard now
    7: At last! the shipment is complete
    6: thanks
    7: No problem, now can i take one of your R142As since the R62 is now yours
    6: why not? you helped me

      There's a diamond crossover on the Northbound N and 7 just outside Queensboro Plaza. It is the ONLY connection the 7 has to the rest of the system. N trains COULD switch to the 7, but that'd be a VERY bad idea, since N trains are 10 feet wide. You'd take out a LOT of platforms! LOL!

    Excellent catch and they could have used 57th street 7th ave 63rd Street Station and 47-50th or 5th ave Bryant Park as reversing points for moving trains between Corona yard Flushing and Concourse yard in the Bronx which is connected to the Jerome Avenue line rather than sending it down all the way to Brooklyn for reversal

    • @JerichoWhiskey
      @JerichoWhiskey 6 років тому +2

      This would mean it reverses at 57 St 7th Ave (1) to 72nd Street 2nd Ave (2) to go down to 34th Street 6th Ave (3) and then finally reverses up to the 8th Ave.
      Going down to Atlantic keeps the reverse movements to one instead of three.

    • @EpicThe112
      @EpicThe112 6 років тому +1

      MumboJumbo21 to get your logic and if you look at the first 2:00 of the video there is a total of seven or eight reversal moves between Corona and Westchester yard by reversing in Manhattan they could have saved 3 or 4 steps but at a cost of delaying 6th ave B,D, & F trains and BMT Broadway Q train

    • @JerichoWhiskey
      @JerichoWhiskey 6 років тому

      Er, I am explaining what your idea entails instead of going straight to Atlantic Ave from Astoria. By the way, there are no up/downtown crossovers at 63rd and Lex, it'd have to keep moving up to 72nd Street and 2nd Ave. There are no compatible crossovers at Rockefeller or north of Bryant Park. They have to go down to Herald Square.

    • @JerichoWhiskey
      @JerichoWhiskey 6 років тому +1

That would deprive 7 train riders reliable service, and also deprived the entire IRT , including the 6 and 7 lines, with the needed increased service to relieve overcrowding and long dwell times. You just want people to waste time passing up too many trains because THEY ARE SUPER CROWDED TO BOARD!!!! Get with the times.

    • @TheRailLeaguer
      @TheRailLeaguer 5 років тому +1

      Winson Thai For what reasons? Those 6 line customers could really use those LED signs and the two extra trains that will be added to the schedule to end the constant overcrowding and super long dwell times that exist on Lexington Avenue. Plus, with the change in car assignments, the 6 can be 100% R62As (simplifying maintenance), the 4 can get the last R142As from the 6 line to increase frequency for central Bronx riders, and to displace some R142s onto the 2/5 to increase service on those lines. Between the simplification of maintenance at the shops, the introduction of a new modern signal system to end signal problems on the 7, and an increase on service on most of the IRT, putting the R62As on the 6 line is a win-win-win situation for everybody.

    In my opinion, the R188s go well on the (7). Yes, I understand how some people have memories with the R62s on the (7) Line. But I'm sure you guys were sad when the (7) gave up their Redbirds to and you probably hated the R62s on the (7) back then. Maybe when newer trains replace the R188s (which won't be in a billion years) you'll then miss the 188s on the (7) and so on.

    • @TheRailLeaguer
      @TheRailLeaguer 6 років тому +2

      Lucas English And the R188 is compatible with the new CBTC system they’re installing on the heavily-used Flushing Line. This could bring more frequent service for those who use the busy line to and from Manhattan every day. Also the 7 line R62As are going back to their rightful place on the 6 line being reconfigured back to 10-car sets to make some extra 6 train sets, so more service for those who live in Mott Haven, Parkchester, and Pelham Bay, so everybody wins.

    This transfer route seems excessively long and circuitous. Are there any reasons why this alternate route wouldn’t have worked? Am I missing something?
    1. From the Corona Yard, make way to the center express track W/B all the way to the cross over to the #7 E/B track right after the 33rd St station, just before QB Plaza. Why go all the way to the HP station to cross over?
    2. From QB Plaza #7 E/B track, reverse direction and cross over to the N E/B track. Continue to 39th Ave., then reverse direction and re-enter QB Plaza on the N W/B track.
    3. Continue to the 60th St. tunnel and just before the entrance, cross over to the N E/B track and continue a short way in the tunnel past the connection to the E/B R track.
    4. Reverse direction and continue on the R E/B track past Queens Plaza to the series of crossovers just before the 36th St. station and cross over to the F W/B track.
    6. Reverse direction and continue on the F route through the 63rd St. tunnel toward Manhattan and cross over from the downtown track to the uptown track just north of the 47th-50th St. Station. Enter the 47th St. station on the uptown track.
    7. Cross over to the D uptown track just north of the station and reverse direction. From here, the rest of the route would be the same.
    Maybe there is a little more ‘wrong-railing’ involved, but it seems to me that it beats a trip all the way to Brooklyn to complete the move. Comments?

      Uncle Sticky More wrong railing and reversing. Better to keep it simple.

    • @JerichoWhiskey
      @JerichoWhiskey 3 роки тому

      Revenue trains take precedent and what you are asking this train to do is to move against the normal direction of traffic multiple times on the mainline. It is unsafe (certainly so in the 60th St tunnel where trains can reach speeds as high as 60mph), done primarily during emergencies, and would very likely delay revenue trains even when double ended.
      #4. There is no switch that will allow the train to wrong rail into the westbound track for 63rd St.

      Jordan Gamez If all goes well, it should be R142 cars 6301-7140 for the 2/5, and 7140-7180 and 1101-1250 for the 4 line. The 6 line should get cars 1651-1900 and 1931-2150. The 4 will get all remaining R142A cars as well, so the 2/5 will have 420 cars each, the 4 will have 410 cars, and the 6 should have 440 cars, totaling 42, 42, 41 and 44 cars for the 2, 5, 4 and 6 respectively. Time to increase service.

    • @Mysteryman1500
      @Mysteryman1500 6 років тому

      TheRailLeaguer it’s currently 6301-7115 on the 2/5 line and 7116-7180 r142 on the 4 line (r142a 7591-7810)

      TheRailLeaguer you mean 7141-7180

    • @TheRailLeaguer
      @TheRailLeaguer 6 років тому

      Jordan Gamez I see, but why have 41.5 trains when they can get 7116-7140 from the 4 to make 42 trains for both of the line. With the neighborhoods that the 2/5 serve undergoing changes in demographics and also undergoing redevelopment, they could use those extra cars. Plus it helps to increase the service. This is why I wanted to have around 40-45 trains at each of the mentioned lines.
      I once mentioned that 6301-6740 should be for the 2, 6741-7180 for the 5, and 1101-1250 and 7591-7810 be on the 4, but someone told me that the 4 would be short on cars, while the 2/5 would have too many. This is where my revised assignments came about.

    • @TheRailLeaguer
      @TheRailLeaguer 6 років тому

      Jordan Gamez And yes. I meant 7141-7180. That was a typo.

    Why did it have to go to Hunters Point to reverse? Couldn't they have done that at Queensboro Plaza? There also seem to be a few other places they went further than the first opportunity to reverse.
    They had motormen at each end It's not as though reversing was going to be a time consuming process that had the potential to hold up traffic. One guy takes his key out, the other guy puts his key in.

    • @TheRailLeaguer
      @TheRailLeaguer 5 років тому

      dogmannz Sorry for the late reply, but probably that to save the expense of blocking traffic at a busy station at Queensboro Plaza and the fact that the switch is on the Upper level. Relaying at HP Avenue was better than going through all of the switches between Queensboro Plaza and 33rd St.

      Dynamic Vloger The R62As have the LED side signs, so the R62As are better for the Pelham Line. Also do note that back then it had R62As, so history is repeating itself. And theoretically, if the 7 has 440 R62As in 40 11-car sets, all of those cars going to the 6 will be rearranged into 10-car sets, making 44 10-car sets, and that screams more service for the 6 line. I would favor more service with R62As over modern R142A cars that don’t have that.
